Regal Crossgates used to be the best movie theater in the Capital Region, but it has sadly gone downhill. Given that, the theater is absolutely disgusting now. To make clear, the theaters are dirty and littered with trash. Similarly, most of the theaters smell like weed now. Furthermore, the seats are outdated. To explain, the seats are stained, don't recline, and are stiff as a board. However, the worst part about this theater is definitely the clientele. To breakdown, every time I come here I can't even enjoy the movie. People yell, use their phones, and smoke weed during the movies. For some reason, the employees don't do anything about it. On the flip side, there are some positives to this theater. For example, the theaters are huge and have plenty of seats. Also, they play a lot of Bollywood and independent films that you can't see anywhere else. All told, Regal Crossgates is a shell of its former self due to uncleanliness and outdated seats. read more

The "IMAX"-branded theater is rubbish: Insanely cramped and narrow seating with single, shared armrests that are only about 2 inches thick. Several of the side wall sconces had dead bulbs, and one was distractingly flickering. Image quality is mediocre: dim brightness, grey blacks, washed out, muted colors that don't pop at all. Sound quality is mediocre: all mids and highs with weak bass that has little impact. At start time, they kicked off ~30 tedious min of trailers for cringy lowest-common-denominator dreck before the movie actually started. Unacceptable waste of customers' time. Concession staff seem to hate their job, and I can't blame them. They sell Pepsi products (enough said). Feels like an outdated budget theater charging premium theater prices. Reminded me that home theater quality has made big box movie theaters like this obsolete. First I'd like to say the movie was too loud. HOWEVER, the pleasant and delightful service we got from the two young women (Tazaria and Jade) at the concession area really made up for any annoyance we might have felt regarding the sound. I love having pictures of everything, and when I asked Tazaria to take a picture of me, my husband, and 2 nieces, she never hesitated for a second! She smiled and took the picture. When we got into the theater itself we found that I had chosen seats way too close to the screen, so I bopped back down to change seats, and Jade helped us. She was equally as sweet as Tazaria, and immediately smiling, helped us out. They are very fortunate to have really REALLY good people working for them, as not everyone is so lucky these days. read more

This is one of the few cinemas in Capital district that plays International movies. It's around 17 to 20 miles from where I live and travel if any good indian movies are released. The cinema compared to the others in the area is outdated. The service I experienced this time around was not good, and would have rated a 1 or a 2 but I took into account my prior experiences here. The place has a small arcade has has age restrictions, and need to be of a specific age or need to be accompanied by an adult. I believe that age needs to be over 17. Regal was the only cinema but lately we have Bow Tie and AMC that could drive competition. read more

The manager of Regal was so rude to me when I lost my glasses ( which cost me over $250 out-of-pocket) after spending over $50.00 just taking my son to a kids movie. So I lost them in the theater she never even asked how she could help me or offered to go and look for them for me. She just told me there's no way they're there because cleaners come through there and it's not possible that they're there. The individual theaters here are very hit or miss. Some have terribly uncomfortable chairs and inadequate soundproofing, while others are perfectly fine, though not stellar. The staff are friendly and helpful. While it's a bit of a maze to navigate, the number of screens here allows for a wide variety of films to be shown, which is nice. Overall, it's not my first choice in the area, but it's rarely crowded in my experience and the wide selection makes it a solid option. I do, however, recommend taking the elevator over the broken escalator. read more

It's not exactly a theatre fit for royalty, so I wouldn't call it Regal at all. And I'd take Ava Max over IMAX any day of the week. The less said about my experience at this movie theater the better - largely because the prices are really high, especially for Albany, which is kind of an old city that shouldn't be this expensive. But in some ways it is, and I couldn't afford to frequent this movie complex too often if I lived around here. I don't think they have upgraded the non IMAX screens since the theater was built over 16 years ago. The screen was dull and the colors were muted. People, I didn't go to see a WWII era film where the colors are under saturated for dramatic affect. No. I went to see The Hobbit- a movie that is supposed to be full of vibrant colors and sweeping landscapes. Instead I felt like I was watching it on my aunt's old rear projection TV. They shouldn't push you to shell out more cash for the IMAX just to get a decent picture. Now this is frustrating because its the same damn company but, next time I'll go to Colonie Center where the picture quality is much better. At least they are using technology from this decade. So, I don't go to the movies often because it's expensive and I can have a great movie experience at home. But every now and then, I get the urge. Today, on a rainy and chilly spring day, my husband and I decided to check out a movie. And because we had a gift card, we decided to go for the IMAX. Nope. Won't make that mistake again. Seriously, $40 to get a headache. The glasses were uncomfortable (to keep people from taking them home?) and dug into my head the whole time. The seats were the low end of regular comfortable, and if I am paying 20 zing-zang dollars for ONE ticket, I should at least be comfortable! Regal needs to, for a start, update their IMAX theaters for a more luxurious experience. Then they should look into updating the regular theaters, too. TVs today are really nice, so if you can't match the comfort of my couch, what's the point? read more

Meh. I'm very tempted to lower this review to two stars because of the very high price of tickets here, for which I would have expected better concession options (and seat delivery, as you get in other parts of the country when paying premium ticket prices), the inconvenient split-level layout, the extremely long lines at the "box office" stuck in the middle of the mall (for a morning show?), and the complete lack of anything more special than your typical Mall multiplex. Plus restrooms not well-cleaned (again - first show of the day? Excuse me?) That said, the seats were comfy, we had decent viewing angles (although that was because we were at a sparsely-attended show -- the seats around the edges looked like they were neck-achers), and the projection and screen were modern-levels of excellence. So in terms of the totality of the experience: fine. I expect we'll be skipping this location when the movie we want to see is playing elsewhere, because of the cost and the extra overhead of time in going to the mall-based multiplex (Crossgates is sprawling, to say the least), but will come back if we really really want to spend extra money for the IMAX or they are showing something that's not showing elsewhere. Parking /walking tip: if you park in the odd lot between Macy's and the Bally's Fitness entrance, you can go down a little corridor to get to escalators right in front of Macy's on the inside of the Mall (opposite Payless for Kids) and you're as close as you can get to the movie theaters. Now I will rant about a current pet peeve. /rant The concept that we are being "green" by "recycling" our 3D glasses. There's NOTHING GREEN about this, because they WRAP EXTRA PLASTIC around the glasses which creates just as much plastic waste as if you had just tossed the glasses, less so for us since we let the kids take the glasses home and use them as toys, which keeps them out of the landfill much longer. No, the scam here is they want to RECYCLE THEIR MONEY by not having to absorb the costs of new glasses. We had to go back TWICE, all the way downstairs to the ticket-taker, to get "new" 3D glasses because there were smudges and in one case a tear on several of our glasses. I've paid extra for the 3D glasses, please at least make sure we can pretend you give a damn about making sure they're clean (I won't even get into the hygiene issues here -- but you, my fellow movie goers, should thank me profoundly that I don't let my four-year old return his glasses back into the glasses-stream after what HE does with them). And, please don't act surprised or pissed off when I come back asking for glasses a second time and insisted on opening them up out of the plastic bag to check they were clean on the third set. I'm not criticizing your ticket-taking abilities, you poor sod, I know you're not personally responsible for the schmutz on my glasses, so please don't take it that way. /rant read more

Nice theater. Very clean and the popcorn is sooo good. Typical over priced tickets and food but we pay it. It was well staffed. The popcorn really was good. A nice treat if you have the money. Once inside we found the perfect seats and watched about ten previews. Everyone seemed to have paid attention regarding cellphone usage. It was fun! After the movie, there was someone taking surveys on iPads. That was cool reviewing the movie we just saw. I usually go to Colonie Center for movies but Crossgates is okay too. read more

In addition to the standard overpriced movies (13.50 for standard) and stupid snack prices, you have to endure 15 minutes of commercials after the movie start time. I know - its common - but doesn't mean it is OK. THe temperature here has been crazy cold the last two movies i have been to - like shivering cold. The good thing is with 18 screens they can hold on to movies longer and have more showing times. Reasonabl;y clean and decent seats and sound. Hasn't required earplugs the last few times I have been. I strongly prefer the Spectrum, but of course you're not going to see big productions there. read more

I must say, for the amount of people this place deals with, your going to understandably have to have some patience. First off, the good experiences. Buying the ticket was simple, no big whoop (other than lack of military discount). The line setup for the concessions is a good way to prevent mass hysteria. Popcorn was good, many options for other tastes, and they had a healthy option. Screen looked good. Bad. Lack of military discount. Long wait lines at concessions (although the cashiers were professional and working their butts off). popcorn was sitting for a while, and not option for self applied butter or salt. I feel duped. The only reason why I ever, EVER see a movie at crossgates is because I want to be completely immersed in the experience of a big Hollywood action movie. For those more thought provoking movies, I'll go to Spectrum 8 or Upstate Films down in Rhinebeck. Both are excellent. But when Bruce Willis jumps a cop car off a toll booth and into a helicopter hovering above, I want to FEEL the explosion. I want to see individual specks of blood spurting when Will Smith beats a zombie-like infected creature. Regal 18's sound and picture allow for this and for that I am thankful. So here's my beef: I paid $15 to see Avatar in 3D at the IMAX Experience at Regal. I should have known something was fishy with the word "experience" immediately following the IMAX brand. As I stepped into the theater, I thought back to 1999 or so when I first saw an IMAX film down at the Palisades Center in West Nyack, NY. Back then, the screen seemed much larger, dominating my view. I literally felt like I was on Everest or on an Indy speedway. Fast forward to 2009 and now IMAX looks tiny. Did I really grow that much? No, Mike, your pubescent growth spurt wasn't that big, Albany's IMAX screen is actually much, much smaller. The Palisades Center has a 53.8ft by 74 ft screen and a 15/70 projector. Albany gets a 27ft by 51ft screen with a digital projector. So basically, Regal updates an older theater to have better sound, a slightly bigger screen, moves a few rows of seats back away from the screen and obtains an IMAX digital projector and BAM! IMAX for the denizens of Albany! Add a voiceover by Bob Wolf from PXY 106 to give the audience the idea that yes, they are witnessing the crown jewel of Albany cinema right here at Regal 18 IMAX (no offense to Bob Wolf, you gotta earn the monies too). So yes, like others out there, I was fooled by a cinema chain and the IMAX company into believing the IMAX experience was the real deal. And, like others, I'll continue to bring in my own candy and diet Coke, thus avoiding grossly overpriced concessions. Just my little way of sticking it to the man. read more

Two hours of having your head pressed to your chest as you struggle to look up at the screen makes you dream of watching comfortably on your own couch. #2 - Stop raping your customers on concessions! Sh*** popcorn and a Coke for $15? Good way to build a customer base. Regal - be the first theater to adopt my proposed "facility fee ". To make your money for running the theater, charge a five dollar facility fee to every customer. I convinced my boyfriend to see Black Swan after promising there was violence and nudity in it. He was vaguely annoyed that neither fully delivered as much as I made it seem. Whoops. The theater is nothing special. I prefer stadium seating and we liked where we sat. I didn't like that the arm rests don't go up so I couldn't fully snuggle in. The movies are cheaper in Albany than in NYC, that's for sure. After the movie we walked around the mall for a bit and got lunch in the food court. Overall an entirely unmemorable movie watching experience but nothing to complain about. read more

Let's be serious, people. This is the way I see it: if you want to get worked, this is the place to go. You will pay a small fortune to see a movie that may or may not suck. Given Hollywood's trend of lacking creativity, chances are strongly in favor of the latter. "But Frank, what about 3D-IMAX-OMG-EPIC movies!" Forget that nonsense. Most of that shit is just a case of the industry forcing 3D/IMAX into a movie that doesn't benefit from it in order to persuade you that you _need_ to spend a fortune to watch it in the theater. You have two better options to roll with: Option 1: Go to a different theater -- one that doesn't suck (or at least doesn't suck quite as badly) -- to see the movie. There are a few options locally, including some drive-ins. Good for dates or just to get out of the house once in a while. Anything else ought to work well with option 2... Option 2: Wait for it to come out on DVD/Bluray. That's what I normally do, I wait and buy the Bluray. That way, if the movie sucks (which it probably will), I'll at least have something to show for the $20-$30 that I spent. In the case of seeing a crappy movie at Regal, after spending $15 for the ticket and $747,485,663 for a small soda, I walk out with nothing more than a piss-poor mood. read more

The seats are not as comfortable as their rival mall's, and I prefer the digital format. When the rival mall put in a digital theater, Crossgates put in IMAX, but it's the pseudo-IMAX, not the real thing. I hate IMAX. I don't like the way I can feel the sound effects in my chest. I don't like that they're not digital. I can see the difference in visual quality, and since it's the blockbusters and SFX-heavy movies that I see in mainstream theaters, I insist that the quality be as high as possible. If I were a teenager, I would think it's cool that there's an arcade, but as an adult gamer, I hate the mall so much that it never even occurs to be to be lured by any of the games in the lobby. The lobby is on the grimy side. It doesn't strike me as gross, just a little off-putting. The layout is a little weird, too. The lines at the snack bar don't always make sense and tend to interrupt the traffic flow to the theaters and not in a good "let's buy some popcorn!" kind of way. The only time I ever come here is if the movie I want to see is only playing here and I really, desperately want to see it on the big screen. I can not believe how low the rating for this movie theater is. Most of the complains for over priced tickets, snacks, and drinks. But seriously though, do most people not have any idea about the pricing for a chain movie theater like Regal is? It is not fair to give a poor rating based on just one factor. Here is my overall thoughts about the theater: First of all, let's talk about the movie showings. This theater has very well scheduled show times, accommodating newly released movies, as well as other movies that have been up for a while. I can always find a reasonable showing. Secondly, let's take in consideration of the spending. Yes, their snacks and drinks are indeed very overly priced. A small coke is five bucks. The price for movie ticket is however, pretty reasonable, for a standard showing. I personally watch most of the movies in theater in standard showing, not so much in IMAX nor 3D. I will watch certain movies in IMAX or 3D, and I don't have a problem justifying for a few extra bucks. Last but not least, let's discuss the seating. I think the seats are nothing but standard typical movie seats. They are not the most comfortable, but certainly doesn't make you wanna keep changing the seating position. However, the armrest can not be pulled up, so a couple can't really lean on each other comfortably. read more

Went to see Jurassic World with my 13-year old and his buddy today. Concessions are SO, SO expensive! We got a medium popcorn to share, and each of us got a bag of snacks (Reece's Pieces / Sour Patch Kids / Good n Plenty), as well as a small drink. FORTY-FIVE dollars. Unreal. I had purchased tickets online. On a prior visit, the job of tearing tickets was being done by a woman who was probably in her 60s, and she had no idea what was happening when I showed her my phone. She ended up calling a manager, and the process probably took longer than it would have if I'd just waited in line to buy paper tickets. Thankfully, on today's visit, the QR code scanner was a college kid, and we were good to go. We had arrived early enough, so we had our pick of seats in Theatre #2. Initially, we went with seats that are about halfway up, with lots of legroom in front, due to the wide walkway that crosses the theater right in front of them. However, because there's so much room, the heads of the people in front of us blocked a sizable portion of the bottom of the screen. We moved back a couple of rows, and had an unobstructed view. Over the next twenty minutes, we saw no fewer than three groups of people sit there, notice the same thing that we did, and move. Maybe I'm just getting old, but lately, I've been opting for the standard, non-3D 35mm screenings. They're much more palatable than those in their bombastic IMAX Theaters, in which we'd spent time a few weeks prior (to see Age of Ultron). The previews before THAT movie were so loud that we had to plug our ears. They actually caused us physical pain. Picture and sound in the theater today were good. Seats were about as comfortable as you'd expect (not very). The Spectrum is my favorite theater in the Capital Region, but if I'm going to a Summer Blockbuster / Big Dumb Popcorn movie, I prefer Colonie Center. Crossgates got the nod today for two reasons: 1) The start time fit into our tight schedule (because it was opening weekend, they had a showing that started about every half hour) 2) Getting there from the Northway is quick and easy. Again, our schedule would not have jived with a trip to Colonie Center, where we would have dealt with Wolf Road traffic and the headache of finding a parking spot. The manager there named Dana Ellithorp is a complete rude, impatient, sorry excuse for a manager and frankly a person. The theater is like a ghetto with dirty bathrooms and again a crappy manager. He threatened to call the police just because of a RIGHTFUL complaint of an unpleasant movie going experience (a group of stoned guys were yelling through the whole film). He did NOTHING about it citing "The movies over" basically saying to get over it. Never, I repeat Never support this sorry excuse for a theater. The general staff are great but the manager Dana and the security are trash who do not deserve any respect because of how they treat patrons. You have been warned. I try to avoid this place. In fact, I try to avoid the mall in general. I'll only go here if it's a movie I simply must see and it's not playing anywhere else in the area. That almost never happens. It's too crowded, too intense and more importantly, too expensive. And what kind of place only counts the first showing as the matinee? That showing is usually at, like, 11:30 a.m. Who goes to the movies at 11:30 a.m. ? I'm sorry but $10 for a theater in Albany is absolutely ridiculous. If you have borrowed a Mall wheelchair or brought your own for a movie, do NOT let them seat you in the uppermost handicapped area!!!! Most movie sound systems are extremely loud to begin with. But at this higher elevation, not far from the theater ceiling, the blasting surround sound made the already too high volume music nearly unbearable. In addition, when the characters talked, their dialogue was muddy and even occasionally unintelligible. (Possibly, both caused by an echo from the ceiling?) Furthermore, these far reaches of the theatre are rarely patrolled by any ushers. We were totally on our own, shushing rudely loud patrons nearby and a woman who was texting during nearly the entire film, causing a constant peripheral distraction. Today I experienced a disappointment when my dog's sneaker fell out of my bag in Theatre 12 and I asked the gentleman on the phone to please retrieve it before the next movie started while I drove back to get it from him. It took him less than 3 minutes to apologize and say the sneaker was long gone because they'd already cleaned. As you all know, my dog wears her sneakers everywhere so I continued on to the theatre, where I was allowed to go upstairs and executed a search of my own. It took ME less than 10 seconds to go inside the theatre where I told the gentleman to search located find her sneaker.
