Worst coffee I have ever had. The cold brew tastes like pee and the syrups have no flavors what so ever

Saw the fantastic reviews and had to stop by while visiting Pittsburgh! Unfortunately they were unable to make decaf espresso drinks when I stopped by but were super helpful in helping me find something else to drink, plus gave me a $1 off! Ended up with one of my faves, the golden milk latte. They use honey to sweeten it and asked me how sweet I wanted it (not very), and it ended up absolutely perfect for my taste. Sad this shop isn't in DC, but I think I'll be back anytime I'm in the burgh. read more

I'll preface this review by saying, I don't like coffee. I do love chai tea and other forms of tea, and the chai latte mix they have is so so so good. It is much less sweet than any other mix I've had, to where it tastes much more natural. It still had tons of flavor though. Also, the barista was very friendly and that's always a plus. If you want to get away from the typical crowded coffee joints like Dunkin' or Starbucks, try this place! Decent, hidden little gem of a coffee place hidden next to Peace, Love, and Little Doughnuts, one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it type coffee shops. You're greeted by the friendly owner, who, when I asked, kindly gave me a sample of the chai mixture used to make the chai latte. He keeps up a constant stream of friendly banter as he makes your drink, and you guys both talk a bit about your day. I ordered an 8oz chai latte, and boy, should I have gotten the bigger one! Spicy, slightly savory with a hint of sweetness and slightly creamy without overwhelming the senses, since I took mine with almond milk instead of regular. Although there isn't a ton of seating, which I think should change as this place becomes more established (it's barely been open a month), it feels much more spacious this way. The decor is eclectic, but minimal-not too gaudy or distracting. If you get a seat at the table, it's a perfect place for studying. I'm excited to have come here, can't wait to return! read more

If I don't write this review as a Yelp Elite, I cannot be allowed to make it to Yelp Elite Events. With that said... Redhawk is really great! I'm officially a coffee snob. I have opinions as strong as the coffee these places claim to brew. Maybe even stronger. Redhawk is legit. You know that best friend you had in high school who you happen to see every now and again? You know how that feels like you pick up exactly where you left off the last time you met? You know that sense of family you get with that person? Yeah, you feel that at Redhawk. First time in, do I know this barista? They speak to me and make my beverage while displaying brotherly and sisterly affections. What a delight! Order a cortado. It's equal parts espresso and steamed milk. Their cortado tastes like a significant chunk of the goodness of heaven had been liquified and placed into a little glass. That sip is of another realm. Get it! I like the atmosphere inside. It is a local spot and busy. It also doesn't have a lot of room, to be honest. So, that could be a star reduction...but come on. They're a coffee shop in Oakland. They're fighting big battles for any space in a prime college town. So, hats off to them to owning their space, however small it is! Redhawk uses Brunton's Dairy products from Beaver, which I greatly appreciate because it's always super fresh tasting. I love the lattes, the hot chocolate, cold brew, I've never had a botched coffee from here! My only critique is that I'm not a morning person and so I always miss their bagels and food, and I wish I didn't have to stop somewhere else to get something to eat. The baristas are always really nice and I've never been there when any of the tables haven't been bussed or the utensil station is messy. Great job! read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for quite a while now, and finally made the visit yesterday. It's quaint inside- there are only a few tables, making it an intimate study spot. However, since it is so small, I'm sure it can get very loud inside. There wasn't a line when I arrived at 10:30 am, which was great. I went with an 8 oz. almond milk latte. It was beautiful, tasty, and hit the spot. However, for $4.50 it was a little too expensive for me to regularly purchase. I do want to come back and try their house roast next time! My sister ordered a small mocha with oat milk. The cup was surprisingly small for what I'd consider a small to be. She said that the mocha was a subtle mocha flavor. She was still able to taste her espresso shots which wasn't bitter and her preference. The drink wasn't too creamy but she couldn't recall if oat milk was supposed to be thin or not. I'm in town visiting a sick family member at UPMC. I visited for my first time on Monday October 4th and the person who rang me up was rude and aggresively waved the card reader in front of me to get me to leave a tip. I stepped back because I was put off by his behaviour and didn't want to leave a tip. When I got my bank statement, I saw he went ahead and added a $1 tip to my order anyway without my permission. I emailed the store using the contact info on their website and no one replied. I would be very careful there. One of their cashiers has no problem stealing money from you if he gets a chance. read more

THE BEST COFFEE IN OAKLAND. Enough said. -- They bring croissants and other fresh pastries from a french bakery called La Gourmandine(which is my favorite bakery!!!) and of course the pastry is so delicious. They run out quite fast, so sometimes you have to go to next door to get the donuts instead. Coffee beans are very fresh and it does not taste as bitter as Starbucks coffee or as sour as Dunkin' coffee. Very Well blended. Latte art is decent too. They also do the latte art with soy milk (or was it almond milk?) too- THAT was really impressive, actually. Space is kinda small, and it closes around 6pm - so not the best place to study for the students, but their coffee is too good to resist. Just gotta go and grab coffee. read more

Such a lovely cafe! I came around what must have been lunchtime, because all the other places in the are were packed. Redhawk was also very busy, but served coffee very quickly. I ordered a vanilla almond milk iced latte, which was absolutely delicious, with great quality espresso and just the right amount of sweetness. There were a few seats and they made good use of the relatively small space. My only wish was that they had more of a food selection. I hope to come back before I leave Pittsburgh! read more

This coffee was so good! I got the cold brew which comes in a glass bottle. A little pricey but it is so smooth. There was no need for any type of milk/creamer. The only downside is that there isn't much seating so it's more of a grab and go type coffee shop. It's also a little hidden and if you don't know where you're going, you may miss it! (Hint: it's next to the donut shop.) I'll surely be back. The parking situation is metered street parking. It's fine if you work or live in the area, then you can just walk and not have to deal with that hassle. read more

First Impression: I went to Red Hawk for the first time today after reading good reviews. Parking was difficult to find mid-day, but I got lucky. The shop itself was very quaint, rustic, and city-like. The employees were very friendly. The place was filled with patrons studying or chilling which is a good sign. Offerings: I sampled their drip coffee which was a Peruvian. It was good but not my favorite origin/roast in general. I asked about pourover options and they gave me a few. I selected a Columbian. The Barista used a kalita wave 01 to brew it. The coffee tasted watery at first, but after letting it cool, I realized it was a perfectly rounded cup and clarity was decent. I could taste notes or cocoa/chocolate. Columbian single origin is usually my favorite. Red Hawk roasts their own coffee plus orders other roasters' high end coffee which is cool. I didnt have time to ask about their complete selection, but the high end coffees they mentioned sound amazing (i.e. Passenger out of Lancaster). Other impressions: I was at the shop with my toddler who was interacting with the employees and they were so good with him. I got to meet the owner (I think his name was Brenden?) who was really cool. He had heard that my second child was born a few days ago and he hooked me up with a sample bag of beans and congratulated me. I was so appreciative. That speaks so much to the type of crew and shop this place is. I hope to come back here again soon! read more

Went to this pace for a nice beverage before heading over to Hillman Library. The owner of the restaurant was very polite and the shop itself had a nice small town atmosphere. I ordered a regular latte and it was absolutely delicious. An awesome perk about this place is that they do latte art! The only thing I wished they had was some sort of rewards system, but this place is very new so they may come up with one later. However great coffee and I will be back without a doubt! read more

I've been meaning to get here for a while now & I finally did with a Friday off! I was so happy with the service and quality of the coffee. I kept it simple, as per usual, with a black coffee with almond milk. Just $2 & free refills! I have to say a coffee shop gets bumped up on my list when they let me pour my own almond milk. Some baristas can be stingy with alternative milks. But Red Hawk lets your pour yourself. A small thing for some people, but huge for me. I was lucky to get a spot at the bar along the wall. This place is small, thats my only complaint! I knew that going in, but I was rather surprised to see how small. But honestly, it was not a bad experience. Everyone was kind, friendly, affable. The service is great. The baristas are so, so nice and helpful. I'd love to see them expand and Im hoping they will! Regardless, I'll be back. read more

Redhawk Coffee easily has the best quality coffee in the Oakland area. It's a little hip spot right off The University of Pittsburgh's campus that has a wonderful atmosphere and a great staff. They make a drink called "golden milk" which is super tasty and also very good for you, as it contains Tumeric and other natural spices. Their menu is a little basic (lattes, espresso, etc), but the quality makes up for that. I'd like to see some more flavor options in the future. read more

Small coffee shop that makes incredible-tasting coffee! It's conveniently located next to my work so whenever I feel like eloping meetings, work, pretend that I'm working really hard for hours, meeting online-dating prospects mid-day, or just finding a getaway to do some work this is the perfect place to do it! Staff is incredibly friendly, perhaps some of the friendliest I've come across. Coffee is amazing, and they provide free refills if you sit in. My only concern is that seating is very limited, and one of the few times I did get a table, the screws were a bit loose so the table was very wobbly. The ambiance is so friendly, I was thinking about asking them for a screwdriver so I could just tighten the screws, but my date urged me otherwise... .... .... I stopped in for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face behind the espresso bar. It was one of my fave barista's from espresso a mano in Lawrenceville. Come to find out, he owns Redhawk! This makes me so happy to see genuinely passionate people fulfilling their dreams and creating a successful business! Aside from that, kudos for also making their own chai concentrate. I really hate a lot of the boxed brand chai, as most of them are too sweet. You know, I doubted the reviews before coming here and I feel bad for doing so. Finally got to stop in and loved everything about it. The interior decor, menu, pricing, and patrons. My barista was so friendly and genuine in wanting to create the best drink for me. I got an oat milk mocha which was smooth and not overbearingly sweet, just how I like it. Can't forget the cute latte art--even while ordering to-go--what a nice surprise. They don't have soy milk but there are other nondairy options such as oat milk and almond milk. The shop is really small so you will need some luck in finding a table of you plan to stay. Overall I'd say it's a better place for a grab and go coffee due to the space limitation. Came on a Tuesday morning and ordered a latte + almond croissant, which was absolutely delicious - the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft dough inside. There isn't too much different from any other coffee shop in terms of variety... they have all the typical espresso, latte, mocha, cold brew, bagels and basic pastries. However, I can't rave enough about the great service (despite being extremely busy at times) and the very welcoming and relaxing environment. Although the seating can get a bit crowded, there is a pretty good turnover so you're bound to find a seat eventually. The tables are pretty widely spaced too so you don't feel cramped while trying to get work done. Great music as well. Tl;dr Typical coffee shop selections, but amazing people. The current lineup included Passenger- Lancaster, PA, Dogwood- Minneapolis, and Four Barrel with De La Paz- San Francisco. I've noted since that they're utilizing Cat and Cloud's liquid gold. Moving to the counter, the baristas were incredibly friendly, kept a conversation, and readily helped to clarify my order (I ordered an Americano, but they made sure that I was aware it would only have one shot of espresso in it). Awesome place with awesome people serving awesome coffee. Small storefront, but rounds out a good Oakland experience with the only thing the neighborhood was missing: great coffee.
