I'm new to the city and I was looking for a good salon to get a haircut. So I did what anyone else would do and went to Yelp for help. The atmosphere is pretty cool and the pricing is affordable since you have 5 levels of talent to choose from; student to master. They also give you $10 off your first visit so I had to try it out. What I was a little disappointed with was the quality of cut. Now by no means am I the type of girl to spend an hour each morning on her hair, I like to spend that time sleeping instead. So I told my stylist this and how I like to air dry my hair so I need a style that will be low maintenance and will still look good as it grows out long. What got me right away was that my stylists hair was raggy - that's the best word to describe it. It looked like she hadn't combed it all day and there were split ends everywhere. You would think that if you go into a hair salon that your stylists hair would be in good shape or at least BRUSHED! Besides that - the layers I received were not up to the standard of my stylist and the next day my hair looked like I had it cut a month ago and I could not - for the life of me - get it back to what I had the day before. But that was just one stylist, I haven't gone back but I may give them another chance since others have had a good experience. read more

I decided to give Red Bloom a try after reading all the reviews recommending their stylist Heather as one of Calgary's top hairstylists. The reviews were right -- Heather's haircuts were the best I've ever had. She listens to what you want, works with what you have and you leave happy happy happy. After seeing Heather at Red Bloom for the better part of a year, I was devastated to hear she had moved on. Took me a while to track her down, but I finally did. She's at Pure Form Salon now, and I'll definitely follow. It's only a couple of blocks away from Red Bloom, after all, and honestly, I'd follow her anywhere. She's that good. read more

Wanted: - Ash brown hair - stressed no coppers/oranges/bronzes at least 5x - Partial lighter ash brown/dark blondish highlights underneath for a half ombre look - A trim The stylist and I had about a 15 minute conversation about what I wanted. I stressed that I wanted absolutely zero bronze colour in my hair and I wanted an medium-light ash brown colour. I even had pictures. She convinced me that it would wash me out so she was going to add a hint of warmth to the colour. I came back to the chair with VERY warm coloured hair. The poor lighting in the salon did not show exactly how warm my hair was. I was taken back to the sink for toning however this did not work very well as after I sat on a patio with my closest friends and boyfriend (with the ..."it's not that bad...but..."sympathetic look) commenting on how ORANGE my hair looked. Charged: $260+ I called the next day as I was not going to work (I work in a professional environment) with orange coloured hair. They wanted to book me in with the SAME stylist days and days LATER on in the week. No thanks. Needless to say I will not be returning to this salon. read more

Went to see Alex for the first time yesterday. I have been looking for a new stylist in Calgary since I moved here four years ago. Did not have a lot of success so far until yesterday. This is the first time I used yelp to find a hair salon and it paid off. I found the salon a very professional and welcoming environment right from the first step inside. Was greeted immediately, offered a beverage , and someone took my jacket. Alex was everything I want in a stylist. Professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about hair. She really took the time to have a thorough consultation and know exactly what I wanted. She then proceeded to cut my hair exactly as we had discussed. I love my haircut. I also loved discussing some of the current Aveda products they carry. The salon smells great! I did try some product that was recommended, she did not push it at all. I especially liked the shoulder and head massage that started off our appointment. I have definitely found my new salon and my new stylist in Calgary. Thanks Alex! read more

As someone who has never done anything with their hair and had what they call "virgin hair", I was a little skeptical of change. I researched a whole bunch of reviews on different hair salons all over Calgary and that's when I came across RedBloom. The majority of reviews for all 3 of their locations seemed to be pretty good and customers seemed to be happy with the results, so after checking out their Instagram account and checking out some stuff on their website, I decided I would stop by at all 3 locations in hopes of having a few different consultations. I stopped at RedBloom Downtown first. Parking down there on 11th Ave. is a little difficult, but the area itself is really open and bright and a perfect place for a salon. My friend and I walked in and were greeted by one of the girls working at guest services who was not super friendly, but rather just straight to the point. I showed her some pictures of what I had in mind (still not 100% sure) from my phone and she seemed to know what I was talking about, so that was refreshing. She reminded me that RedBloom has different levels of hair stylists and that each one usually varies in price depending on what level of hair stylist you get (as well as length, style, ect.) and then asked me which level I preferred to have which I really appreciated. Being someone who needs a lot of reassurance when it comes to big changes like my hair, I told her the price did not matter as long as I have someone who likes to do what I had in mind (which I later learned was called Balayage or Hair Painting), and who was of course good at it. Promptly, my 15 minute consultation was booked with Justine, one of their intermediate hair stylists. Before you meet with your hair stylist, you're asked if you would like anything to drink and you are taken to a waiting area. The entire salon is amazing inside and has this awesome modern look to it, and it is also very open and bright which is nice. Not long after, I met with Justine who looked at some pictures from my phone as well and gave me her opinion as to what she wanted to do and how much she thought I should get trimmed in order to achieve my intended style as best as possible. After discussing what she would do to me on my next visit, she ended up giving me a quote and breaking down the prices for me so when I came back there would not be any surprises. This was greatly appreciated, and since I happened to stop in on one of their slower days, she even did a fishtail braid for me as well and sent me on my way. I came back yesterday for my actual appointment and was greeted again by the same girl at the front desk who was even ruder this time and actually made things kind of uncomfortable. Thankfully she only works at the front desk because I would not feel excited if she was my hair dresser. I get that we all have bad days sometimes, but she also was not that nice on my previous visit. She asked me if I needed to put a coat away or anything (which I did not) and I was then lead to one of their dressing rooms where I was told to change into a robe to prevent anything from getting on my actual clothes. Again this time I was asked if I would like anything to drink as to which I said I was fine. I did not have to wait at all because Justine was all ready. I showed her one more picture I found from her Instagram and she once more went over what the plan was for my hair and confirmed with me that it sounded good to me. The entire appointment was altogether around 3 hours. Justine has an awesome vibe to her and is very confident about what she is doing which is nice to see. She looks really focused, but she was also able to talk to me normally while she "painted my hair" so it was easygoing and relaxing. A few times she commented as to how excited she was and that "it was going to look beautiful" which of course made me super excited as well! In the end, my hair turned out to be a gorgeous balayage style, one I would have never thought I could pull off, but all I got were compliments from other hair stylists and I couldn't have been happier! Justine also seemed really proud of her work so I was happy for her as well. I then asked her if she recommended any products for my hair to take home and she wasn't pushy (BIG PLUS!), she just said "if anything, try this", so I ended up taking her word for it and buying the product. When I went to pay, there was another girl working at the counter who was SO sweet and genuine and just kept going on about how amazing my hair looked which so great to hear after such a big change (and a 3 hour appointment!). The price including the product was $212 and it was so worth it. After I payed, Justine and I took some photos of my hair (sides and back) outside for her Instagram and I of course thanked her a million times. The style I got today only needs to be touched up about every 4 months and I will 100% be back! RedBloom has been amazing and I'm so glad I tried it! Definitely recommend! :) read more

First time getting a pixie? Amanda is your stylist! The only reason I gave 4 stars is because I've only been there once.I came in to get a pixie like Julianne Hough. This made me really nervous because it is not regular short pixie and I wanted to find the right stylist to get the job done. Amanda was very thorough, we had a long talk about what I wanted and how its gonna be done considering my hair texture, face shape and my preferences. Which is a good sign of a good stylist, because if they pick the scissors with only one look a at the pictures, mostly likely the results will not be as good.When she was talking about how my experience will be going short, it seems as if she was knew her information so well she was just repeating it. I think it is a HUGE sign if your stylists goes quiet during the haircut. Because you don't know what they have done till the end therefore reducing your chance to say no to certain decisions made by them. Amanda talked the whole way through, telling me was exactly she was doing. I didn't disagree much because she knew more about how to get the style than I did. All I knew was that I wanted it to look like Julianne Hough. I know after my haircut I wasn't smiling. Its because i knew I was not gonna fall inlove with my hair on the first sight. Also, I was kind of shy to fully look into the mirror at the salon. Third reason is that they were freshly cut, they would poke in the back of my neck and itch. My hair was not use to the new length so they were still glued to my scalp and had no volume ... It looked like a wig but within a week, it was soft and bouncy and I loved it! I really like that Redbloom is honest about which stylist is more experienced with short hair rather saying " All our stylists are experienced" then later you find out that they are not. Amanda was recommended to me, and she was amazing. Anyway, I wanted to thank Amanda because I often found other salons not taking me seriously because i'm young/a student. Which is really upsetting because as a student i have tons of group meetings, presentations, clubs, internship interview, meeting with student learning and etc. And i want to feel confident during those. Amanda tried to set up another appointment for when my hair grows back but I didn't know how to say that I cannot afford to get my haircut by her again, being student and all. The stylist asked the right questions so that I got exactly what I wanted. One thing I was really happy with is that she listened when I said I don't like doing a bunch if talking while getting my haircut. She respected my request. I've been going to RedBloom for about two years now and still absolutely love it. The salon itself is well situated for me being a quick walk from my office. Parking is street which if you are driving can be a pain sometimes but generally there is spaces available close by. The salon itself is nicely appointed and a big open space. The receptionists are always really friendly and I highly recommend the Aveda tea. Up until recently I've been seeing Kimberley but she has opted to return to school full time so it was time to get brave and try someone new. She was good enough to suggest someone for me and the first cut was awesome but unfortunately he works limited hours and is in big demand so I am now on to stylist #3 Alex. Just had my first cut with Alex on Friday evening and again loved it! When I first started going to Red Bloom I convinced my husband to go as well and he saw Alex for a long time so I was confident I would like what she could do for me and I was not disappointed. Not only does this speak highly of the skills of the stylists but also the consistency of approach that Red Bloom emphasizes in the salon. The stylist takes the time to consult with you; what do you like, not like, what are you looking for, how much time do you put in to styling, maintenance etc. So before a blade touches a strand of hair you are ideally on the same page. This has been my experience every time with every stylist and is what makes me vote for top salon, recommend the salon to evereyone and of course continue to go back time and time again. Oh and did I mention this is an Aveda Salon as well? So in addition to top notch product the place just smells like heaven and so do you when you come out the door. You ccan check out the stylist's profiles on their website which will help you select someone who does (or likes to do) your type of hair. Not that a great stylist can't work with anything but I like to think that if you want or have short hair and you go to someone who likes to do short hair you have a good chance of coming out with a great short hair cut! Their stylists are also defined by levels: Master, Advanced, Intermediate and they come with their accompanying rates. With keeping my hair short I am pretty much in every 5 weeks or I start getting antsy and thinking crazy thoughts like cutting it myself. My cut always grows out well I just know when its time. This short schedule can be a bit dear with a Master level stylist but I also look at it as an investment in me and what I present to the world. I love the cut, love how it grows out and it costs what it costs. Knowing many many stylists and the work that they put in to building their skills and perfecting their craft I appreciate that someone with higher skills who uses top products will have a higher price point and you will see the difference. You are always told about the products being used on you and why those ones are chosen and while you will be asked if you are okay for product I have never felt pressured to buy more. Your visit will end with an offer to touch up your make up which is a lovely touch especially if you are headed out for the evening. Oh yes and they do give you reminder calls for your appointments which I love. I'm a big girl and I do a pretty good job of keeping track of my appointments but every now and then I think I've saved it i my phone and then nope! They also print the date of your next appointment on the bottom of your receipt as a nice reminder. Love Red Bloom! read more

I was excited to try this salon because of the high rating and positive reviews. However, I'm sad to say that I have never left a salon feeling more ridiculous in my life. The cut was nothing like the picture I showed the stylist, it was way shorter than what I was expecting, and made my natural hair texture look very frizzy. But the thing that really made my heart drop was the styling. I requested loose waves because I didn't really like the cut and was hoping the waves would help disguise it. For some reason the stylist gave me very tight curls on an already short do, which made me feel like a poodle. By this point I had already been there for a few hours and did not feel confident that they would be able to fix it. Immediately after I left the salon I went around the corner to go cry in the back ally. I'm not even the type of girl that is very particular about my hair - I'll often just leave the house without styling it. The only positive thing was the colouring - it went well with the natural tones in my hair and looked quite natural. Too bad no one will see it as I'll probably be wearing headscarfs and hats until my hair grows back :( read more

Loved my visit at RedBloom Salon. I showed up a bit early and they had a meeting going on but the receptionist made sure I was looked after as soon as I walked through the door giving the 5* treatment. I'm so particiliar about my hair that I used to get to three different stylist in Vancouver (one for my bangs, another for the overall cut, another for the colour) but the Sylist at Redbloom (Violetta) mastered all three flawlessly. I needed my bangs, colour and overall and was excited that I have found someone who could do all 3 - considering I like to change things often. She did an amazing job, trimmed my bangs fashionably mod, trimmed my bottoms without cutting too much, and I got what I wanted. My hair had permanant colour - she worked her magic and I got strategically and evenly placed hightlights. She didn't miss any of my greys as many stylist have done before - i'm so estatic. My stylist didn't take two clients in at the same time (as I've seen some stylist do without much success), delivered what I wanted, and if you want great highlights and already have processed hair ask for Violetta...the entire experience was gerat. Kudos! Since my first visit - i have gone back several times - and I've seen thier other staff deliver awesome cuts and colour. read more

Pretty dissapointed with my first cut at Red Bloom that I had just the other day. I booked my appointment last minute the week leading up to Christmas as I wanted my hair to be nice and well styled for Christmas and a trip coming up over New Years. I asked on the phone if there were any stylists available before my trip who are good with curly hair as mine had gotten long enough for a cut and I was starting to need some professional help in attaining a specific look. I was super happy to find out there was a stylist who specializes in curly hair who would be able to give me a cut the next day. When I was younger my dad used to just cut me and all of my brothers' hair to keep things simple and cheap so I'm not the best at styling my hair and I'm not always the best at being able to communicate specifically what I'm looking for at salons but I thought if I walked in to one with good stylists, like red bloom purports to have, and with an concrete idea of how I'd like my hair to look, I would be in good hands. I had been to Shag a few times over the past year and was happy with my experience but hadn't been blown away so I decided to try out Red Bloom. When I arrived and met with my stylist I showed her a picture that i had found of what I was aiming for, explained that I was frustrated with the manageability of my hair and told her I would like any advice on how to achieve the look in the picture and thatI would like a bit of a trim and clean-up as it had been months since the last time my hair had been cut and as it was at the longest I have ever had it, it needed one. She told me what she was thinking of doing: take a fair amount off the sides as the hair there was definitely too long and clean up the back and top. That sounded good and I was just hoping she had considered what I was looking for enough to know what to do. Just about as soon as she started working with my hair she said that she was surprised at how long my hair was. That should have been my first indication that the cut I was going to get was going to take A LOT off. By the time my hair cut was finished I was surprised by how much she had taken off. Going off of the picture of the style I wanted there definitely should not have been as drastic a change as the one I got. I'm not really one for confrontation and like I said I'm not always the most comfortable at salons so even though I could tell that I had lost a lot more of my hair then I wanted and it wasn't really styled in a way at all like what I had asked for, I basically just smiled and nodded when she asked if I liked it. I wish now that I had let her know that i was pretty disappointed with the cut I got but even more than that I wish I had made sure me and my stylist were on the same page about exactly how much would be taken off and what I was trying to achieve through styling. If I could suggest one thing to the managers of this salon, ot would be to make sure that your stylists do a good job of making the clients feel comfortable and of knowing exactly what their clients are wanting. I'm not an expert on styling hair or anything but I can just tell from playing around with my hair this morning to see if I could fix it that the cut I got not only wasn't what I expected but isn't even an acceptable alternative to me. I would be ok with getting a lot of my hair chopped off if it still looked good but the cut I got and the product my stylist recommended for me makes my hair pretty poofy and it kind of looks kind of like eternal hat-hair. I would basically describe it as how hair looks when you're between having it short amd having it at a length that looks good. I'm sure the stylists at Red bloom are great with clients who have very straight forward hairstyles and hair types but I came to the salon more for tips on how to style my hair in the way I wanted it to look and to also get it cleaned up and trimmed. Each client probably has a different idea of what they want to get achieved at the salon. I had my own idea and it's a real shame that there seemed to be a big difference in understanding between me and my stylist. Now it seems like I'll have to hide my hat-hair under an actual hat for the rest of my Christmas and over my vacation until it gets to a decent length again. UPDATE: Just wanted to add too that I'm pretty sure the product that my stylist recommended for me has given me a bad rash all over my face. Ever since my trip to Red Bloom the skin on my face has been a lot more red and drier than usual and I haven't changed anything about the way I clean my face lately. Some of the product must have come off on to my pillow or something when I was sleeping and has aggravated my skin. Obviously I know that's not something my stylist could have predicted (and I've never had an adverse reaction to any kind of cosmetic before) but it really has just made my whole experience that much worse. Hopefully if I change the product I use the rash will go away soon. read more

I just moved to Calgary and was looking for a good place to go for a haircut. I went to Red Bloom after reading the reviews. Can't say I had nearly as great of an experience as others. The staff was very nice, but can't say I'm at all impressed with my haircut. As I just moved from a very humid climate to a very dry climate, I wanted some advice from the hair stylist about the type of cut that would suit my hair, and generally what would work both for the climate and my hair. The stylist didn't really know how to handle my hair (which apparently is finer in some areas and thicker in others). She didn't listen to me when I specifically told her that certain things just didn't work with my hair, and I ended up with somewhat of a choppy-looking style with random pieces of hair sticking out in random places. She also cut my hair unevenly -- the layers on one side are longer than on the other! And at the end they tried to do a hard-sell on Aveda products (I hate when people try to force you into buying things that you don't actually need). Overall, the people were nice, but the haircut was blah. I'm definitely not going back. read more

So after many months of growing out my son hair, I decided to treat him to a nice salon experience in getting a nice haircut. After a long search on yelp and others review websites, I decided to try out Redbloom due to its stellar reviews. I decided to called the salon and set up an appt. with a senior stylist I was very please that they could book me for the next day. I had a thorough conversation with the stylist since my son is only 13 years old show her a picture of the desire haircut and went to sit in the waiting area after 30 minutes I pick to see why was taking so long that's when I realize this was not a senior stylist she had made a mess of my son hair it was very short and uneven what a mistake!. I felt like crying right there my son said it's okay mommy. I went to paid for the haircut I asked the cashier is this person was a senior stylist and she said no I replied I specific asked for a senior stylist so I said what level of experience MAYA had and her reply was she is an advance stylist ( well I will tell you I wouldn't be surprise if I found she's on her first year of apprentice since that was the quality of her job). Well my disappointment didn't end up there on my way home my son complain of burning on his neck since we were going out for dinner arriving at the restaurant I checked his neck and indeed he had cuts and little punctures from the electric clippers; that's when I decided talk to the manager and put a formal complaint which din't help much her replied was that Maya has 5 years experience as a hairdresser what a joke, she asked me to bring my son back so they can give him a the experience he deserve. I refuse to traumatized him even further one bad experience is enough. Needless to say,this is the worst cut my son had and will not be visiting this salon again. read more

Mary is amazing. So much care and attention to detail. I have very short blonde hair. I have never had a stylist take so much time and care enduring the colour and cut are exactly as they should be. Always willing to work outside the box. I have checkerboard styles into my cut and a soft purple colour to the other side of my hair. Yet it's soft enough that it works in the corporate world. People stop me in the street and always comment on how much they like my hair and its all because of Mary! I've tried many salons on Calgary and no one beats Red Bloom or Mary. read more

I had a blondisma job gone wrong with 2 years of neglect and she turned it into an ombré masterpiece! I highly recommend her! Great attention to detail, asked plenty of questions to ensure I left loving my hair. The other service in the salon was beyond my greatest expectations. My mom and 7 month old son came with me and the entire staff helped to keep my son happy during my 3 hr appointment. Very very happy! If you need a salon this is the perfect place! this place is amazing! Red Bloom downtown was recommended to me by a friend. I have been disappointed in the past by other hair salons so I know not to have high expectations. I walked in with hair longer than my shoulders, fried, highlights were all faded out, roots were all grown out...basically my hair was a disaster. I am also having a serious case of the winter blues so i thought getting a whole new cut and color would do me some good. Annah was my stylist and she was amazing. She took 10 min to consult with me what I wanted. I am not a visual person but she painted the vision so well that she got me really excited for my new look. She was excited as well and having a stylist that is confident and shares in your excitement is great. Then she quoted me the price for cut and color BEFORE she started any work. I'm glad she did that because there is nothing worse than getting a surprise bill at the end of the cut. She quoted me $175 for cut and partial highlights with $10 off as it was my first time there. She even gave my friend a referral credit. I was super happy with my highlights because Annah kept in mind that I don't want to re-touch my highlights every 8 weeks. (time and money) So she mixed the color and put the toner in to suit my needs. She said that my color will stay in for awhile and that the roots won't be noticeable when they grow out. She even put the foils in such a way where my highlights won't make me look like a skunk (thick chunky highlights). I was extremely happy that she did this because she is putting my needs first rather than trying to force me to come in every 8 weeks to color my hair. As my highlights were setting, she came over and gave me a nice 10 minute hand massage with a very nice hand cream. When it came to the cut, she was very precise and she took the time to cut and texturize. The total time for my cut and color was 3 hours but worth EVERY penny. I hate it when stylists rush. I went from having long hair to short hair and I haven't been this happy in AGES! My bf was quite upset when i told him i was cutting my hair short and was trying to do everything he can to convince me not to cut my long hair but once he saw my new hair cut, he was stunned. He said it looks fabulous and sexy. He never saw me with short hair so he was quite nervous but now that he has seen what it looks like, he loves short hair.
