I'm from Toronto and being in a new city trying to find not a good but a great salon was worrisome, I'm very fussy when it comes to my hair. I needed a full head of blonde highlights. I asked a friend who asked their friend who is from Calgary where to go. She highly recommend Shag and to ask for Niki. Only learning during my appointment the friend just started going there herself. As long as I'm in Calgary I will always go to this salon, the search has ended. I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to experience this salon and meet Niki. The atmosphere ( chic, positive, upbeat vibe), the customer service, the products, the prices but most important the manner and ability Niki applies her technical ability is top notch. She explained in detail how she was going to process my hair and showed me different pictures of blondes, making sure I felt confident and understood the color I decided on. The outcome was bang on! Kelsey P at this salon does an absolutely amazing job. I went in with a horrible dye job from another salon that I wanted fixed. I wasn't sure what we could do since my hair was bleach blonde dyed black on the roots, but Kelsey went above and beyond and got my blonde back in one session. It's important to note that it came out so easily because it was a salon dye. Something like a box dye would be a lot harder to get out. Tease me, twirl me, and just SHAG ME!!! Yes I've started a new love affair and Shag has gotten me all hot in the head. Well hair. This posh lil spot is absolutely dynamite. Parking is available to the side of the building and back, few spots in the front but I believe those are for expecting mothers. They offer a bevvie at the door, and smiles galore. Ever had long hour hair appointments where you find yourself staring into void space and dozing off? Shag is upbeat, the atmosphere is sleek with lots of eye candy, art on the walls and good beats. Magazines galore and WIFI to boot! There's also a communal table in the center of the work area which is great for socializing, and not having to be confined to your chair. I love it! More importantly is the craft that's going on in this busy hive. I have dark hard-to-dye hair, and if you have dark hair, you'll know where I'm coming from. Keeping a lighter shade of hair is an absolute nightmare, having to lift the roots and then color, and then match up the two over laps. I came in to have my roots colored, and expecting to have over dyed ends AGAIN, I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't need the rest of my hair dyed. Karissa is a master of her craft, and checked on me very frequently just to get the color right. I haven't gotten a cut yet, but that'll be my anticipated visit. The color set me back $60 and came with conditioning and style - just right as I was heading out that night. Reasonable, and moreso because I was so delighted with how well it turned out. We were visiting our son who lives in downtown Calgary. I go to a salon twice per week to have my hair washed and blown dry because I have physical issues that make washing my own hair difficult ... and besides who doesn't like to be pampered and have their hair done for them. Our son's administrative assistant suggested Shag and I decided to give them a try. The vintage furniture repurposed into hair stations added to the eclectic atmosphere. Candice washed and blew my chin length hair dry. No flat or curling iron. Apparently she is owner or part owner (forget what she said). She was pleasant and I was pleased with her work. I was charged $47.25 which is a little more than I am used to paying for that same service in Ontario but I don't know what the going rate is in Calgary. There is parking in the back which was an added bonus. read more

Recommended by my sister-in-law, Shag did not disappoint. I've had my hair done in 4 different countries and each salon does things a bit differently. At Shag, you'll find creative open spaces covered in fun artwork and decor. Once checked in and called back for your appointment you put on a smock in a changing room (something new to me) amd then have a seat at the stylists station. I booked an appointment here because I was desperate for a new dye job and my regular suburban stylist was booked up for months. I'm super glad that I booked a spontaneous appointment at Shag because I really, really loved this salon experience. It is a super welcoming and hip atmosphere with 27 different stylists and at least 15 styling stations. The furniture are largely re-purposed vintage pieces that I thought made the whole place even more charming. The stylist I had, Carisa, was super sweet and spent two hours on my hair colour (colour alone, not even a cut!) I felt really taken care of and in good hands. Often these hip new styling joints intimidate me and feel hokey/not genuine, but I will definitely be back to Shag because though it was hip, it wasn't exclusive. The reason that it's four stars instead of five is because the price was really steep. I got partial highlights and no hair cut and though it was excellently done, I don't know if it was worth just over $100.00! If you can part with the dough though, I would highly recommend it! read more

I went to Shag on a recommendation from a friend who knew I wanted a big change and I'm so glad I did! I saw Jillian who is an absolute sweet heart and she took me from having drab, lifeless, shoulder length dirty blonde hair to a fabulous asymmetrical platinum blonde bob. Best of all, my hair was the healthiest it had ever been, even while being completely platinum. I ended up coming here to go see Erin, who I used to see prior to my friend being a hairstylist. When my hairstylist moved away, I figured I would track Erin down, as I always loved how she did my hair. First thing, is they have great hours, most salons don't give you that much flexibility to come in late evenings and are open Mondays. The salon is really big and very funky. I'm a huge fan of the decor. You can't park out front, which kind of sucks, but there are a couple stalls in the back. I found their prices to be very reasonable for the work being done. I am glad I found Erin and this salon and will hopefully continue to come here. read more

This review is actually from over a year ago, so I'm not so sure how relevant it is any more, but I was just looking through Calgary salons to try to find someone to do my roots and saw this place and remembered I should have reviewed it. I went in to have my roots done and my tape in extensions reinstalled right before a trip to Cuba for my birthday. The root color didn't match very well at all (you could see a clear bar of different color where the roots were), and ALL of the extensions fell out a week and a half later while I was on vacation, which left me with awful hair for half of my vacation, including my birthday. I've been getting the extensions for over 3 years and I've never had any fall out before this. I actually think I emailed them to tell them this back when it happened. In the salon's defence, the girl was extremely nice, and I think she was a junior stylist. read more

I had the biggest knot-matt and I went to 5 hairdressers they said they had to shave my head or get dread locks. I know it's awful I let it go that long. I went into there to buy a comb with a thin medal handle and these beautiful souls removed my said they could remove my knot. I literally was crying about the knot I did not want to shave my head. They felt so sorry for me and all started working on my hair and took the knot out and made me feel so happy. They went above and beyond anything I would ever expect. I felt so blessed. Marissa, who I've seen at another salon, moved to Shag. The salon is great. Gorgeous interior - vintage furniture, hot pink and white walls, polished cement floors. The mood is very fun. Upbeat music. Great hours. Good prices for cuts and colours. Fantastic service. Everyone there seems friendly and helpful. I love that they have private parking downtown, no long hunt for a spot. I really like Marissa's skills. She transformed my poor, abused hair that was looking very thin. Now it looks like it used to. She gave me tips on things to do at home to improve my hair health. Okay so I stopped in today for a cut nothing too challenging by any standards I've ever known. I asked for about an inch and a half taken off. No layers. Just a strait even across blunt cut.... There is not a single strand of my hair that is an equal length. The front is chopped short and the back is longer with random bits longer than others. Very messed up looking. I was in a desperate situation and now feel more desperate. The stylist was very nice but this is a seriously messed up cut. read more

She picks her locations where she works carefully. SHAG is an upbeat, higher end salon. The ambiance is fabulous, the care for clients is unsurpassed and Stacey is there so no need to say more. My friend Kelsey P works here and I have gone in for a haircut multiple times. It has always been a positive experience. I feel welcome whenever I walk in and the staff are very friendly. Kelsey is fantastic and it is clear to me that she loves what she does. It is comforting to know that the person cutting my hair wants to be there and enjoys it. If you decide to check out this salon - Please please please don't go see a girl by the name of Gillian. I had been growing out my hair for over 5 years. It was half way down my back and beautiful. I had been seeing Gillian for about a year just going in and getting some foils done on my roots. I decided to switch it up and showed her a picture and requested I go super ash blonde. Well- I walked out with white roots, yellow going all the way around- all the way across and purple around my crown. She sent me home because it was closing time and she obviously has better things to do and told me to come back in a week. I told her that I had a very important presentation in 2 weeks time and CAN NOT look like this. She didn't charge me for destroying my beautiful hair (which was very thoughtful) but failed to fix my hair! She just dropped me like a fly. See ya! Around the same time was the flooding - so the salon had to close.... So our appt was cancelled and she said she would get back to me right when the salon re opened. Well guess what? She never called me back. Even if she lost confidence in fixing my hair - she should have been professional enough to forward me onto someone that could help me! Final result? I ended up going to someone new - and they had no choice but to reprocess my hair again - trying to fix her mess up and now it doesn't even feel like hair. Stay away from this girl- she is super friendly - but doesn't care about her clients and will mess up your hair completely and leave u stranded! read more
