Back home for the holidays and woke up in dire need of coffee. I was spending the night at my cousins house in Flossmoor. While they were arguing over who would drive to Starbucks, my uncle says "redbird has the best coffee in the suburbs." So off to redbird we went! Upon arrival, we were greeted by the barista. She was very patient with helping me decide between a matcha latte and a coffee. I always go with matcha but I was swayed by the fact that there's an award behind the counter that says best coffee in Chicago. I selected the Ethiopian medium roast with oat milk and sugar. It is so tasty! My uncle requested their dark roast pour over. My cousin got the horchata cold brew with cinnamon. He said it's a good balance of sweetness of the rice milk with the cold brew. It has a nice "twang" after taste - he liked it a lot. The other cousin got a mocha latte. His review was that it was very delicious, the coffee was smooth and it doesn't leave an acidic taste in your palette after. The chocolate is mild and not overbearingly sweet. We all agree this is some of the best coffee we've ever had. We also purchased scones: one pumpkin and one vanilla. The icing on top was sweet enough for my taste buds and the scone was a nice contrast to the icing. Be warned, it's very crumbly! It's vegan so it lacks binders to hold it together. Both flavors were solid. Might try the lavender one on my next trip but idk if I like lavender or I like the color purple. Bonus: They take Apple Pay! When I mentioned that I forgot my credit card as we walked inside, my cousin goes "it's the suburbs, nowhere out here takes Apple Pay." He was proven wrong. Atmosphere: Nowhere to eat inside but great service. They had a sign that said "even though we can't eat together, we're still a community" and they do a good job of exemplifying that. This is a great find in Homewood. I'm really a diehard Starbucks fan but I discovered this one because it had an excellent review for the food that they serve. Now I enjoy having two cafés go to very distinctive too unfortunately they got hit with the labor shortage so they no longer serve cooked meals but I'm glad that they did well with that so that I could experience everything else they have to offer. it's a very eclectic, artistic, cozy and comfortable ....everything that I look for in a café the two women that work there are very pleasant and efficient and I think they work hard to make it a joy for every customer they serve. Over the weekend some friends and I decided to eat out for Brunch during our vacation. We had settled on Redbird Café. According to Mads, if we didn't want to go to Redbird, "Panera or The Dunks is how we roll in Homewood". Lol We ended up eating Breakfast here Saturday and Monday Morning. The 1st time we went we got the Breakfast Burrito, no meat; Breakfast Burrito, but Vegan; and Mads got the Farm Fresh Plate. We all really enjoyed our meal, I will admit I added hot sauce to my meal, but I do like things spicy. The service was friendly, it was actually someone Mads went to school with, so there was some small talk throughout the meal. We pay at the counter which we forgot about the second time we went. No problem though we figured it out after a minute or 5 of waiting. The second time we went Jack got the same thing, Mads just got coffee, and I decided to try the Single Egg Breakfast Grilled Cheese, no meat. Omgoodness. I really enjoyed that, again I ended up adding some hot sauce to it, but the chipotle aioli was really yummy, and the artisan bread was nice and toasty. I don't know the next time I will be headed this way, but I do know that if I'm around for breakfast I will come here again. I've never been to a farm to table establishment although I love the concept. My dining experience here was great. My sister and I arrived about 730am on a Tuesday. I ordered the breakfast tacos with potatoes and she ordered the same with beans. The food was outstanding! I was about to summon the waitress for salt and pepper as I tasted a potato. It was seasoned perfectly. They were amazing and full of flavor. The breakfast tacos were also amazing. The eggs were the best eggs I've ever had. The pico de gallo on the tacos was full of vibrant flavors. My only issue, I was offered pour over coffee or something else the waitress mumbled. I looked at her confusingly and she looked at me confusingly. So I asked what's the difference and she replied "what do you mean?" I was very agitated by this exchange and ordered the pour over coffee because I did manage to get her to say the flavor was bolder. I didn't understand how she either expected me to know the difference or she herself didn't know. The waitress ended up being appropriate afterwards and by the time we left 3 hours later, she had redeemed herself. Be prepared to wait a little longer for food as it is prepared to order. I will be returning, especially now that I know the difference between pour over coffee and whatever else she mumbled. read more

On a busy Thursday morning, I was heading to my internship in the city and missed my train. While waiting for the next one, I went to Starbucks to grab a mocha, but the wait was too long. I figured I'd try out Redbird Cafe, and boy, I am glad I did so. The ambiance is quaint and calm; various organic products being sold as well as fresh fruits and vegetables from the community. I ordered a Nutella Latte with oat milk, and it was honestly one of the best things I've ever had. Super rich and not just a blast of granular sugar sediment like other coffee places. Price-wise, it is pretty on par with most stand-alone coffee shops; my latte was $5. I will definitely be returning! read more

Came here with my dad, my aunt, and her husband. If you're a big "meat and potatoes" kind of person, this is likely not for you. If you're big into healthy eating, this place IS for you. I also love the ambiance here. It's a good cafe. They also don't use plastic straws which I like! I only come to the Homewood/Flossmoor area about once a year to see family, but this place is great. Not our kind of place at all.. like most other people have pointed out, it's a small menu (6 main dishes) with a majority of the meat being pork. They do have turkey bacon, but the person with me was Jewish so he was pretty disappointed. First & foremost, this is such a cute place! The waitresses were nice. The best dish was the yogurt w/ granola (lol how sad)! But those three things... that about sums up the pros. Oh! And their jam is yummy. I got the farm fresh eggs, ordered them over hard bc I don't like a runny yolk. They were brown to a CRISP & could barely eat one bite. They gave me.. maybe 7 slices of a small red potato? We had to go get our sever (more water, condiments, coffee) THREE times. They were not even busy. We also ordered a cappuccino which took them 25+ minutes to make & got it 5 mins before we were leaving.. just all around bad experience. Redbird's got some things going for it, but there is a lot of room for improvement. The good: -Locally sourced ingredients -The woman working behind the counter was friendly. I only ordered lunch to-go for myself. She gave me a bottle of water while I waited for my food to cook. -Small menu. A lot of places in this area have giant menus and that bugs me. -The food came out quickly. -I like that the containers they use are compostable. The not so good: -The building had a musty smell, like an old basement. I'm not sure how much control they have over that, but it was off-putting. -I ordered the pulled pork tacos and the whirled peas with chips. The chips were the only item that was properly seasoned. The pork was cooked well, but it was CRYING for salt. A sauce drizzle or some lime juice or something would have been welcome, too. The whirled peas (described as pea guacamole) were also really shy on salt and some heat would have helped. On the bright side, it's a clever use of peas and the texture worked well with the chips. It took 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee because it's a real coffee shop. I'm used to going through the drive-thru and having coffee on two minutes or less. I ordered the veggie chili. It was not bad. It needed something to spice it up like cumin or chili powder since it was full of beans and squash. The service was okay but if they don't expand the menu, I probably won't return. I LOVE Redbird. I usually eat here once a week and always get a Zen Latte (a latte with lavender & vanilla to sweeten it). I love it! Sometimes I get a cappuccino, which is also delIghtful. The regular hot dark coffee has a fantastic, smooth, but powerful flavor. My go to menu items are the FARM FRESH PLATE with sausage. OMG the sausage is high quality, very flavorful, and not greasy at all. It's really a combination that's hard to come by. I also love the BREAKFAST BURRITO. Again, the chorizo sausage is flavorful but not greasy. It's a perfect comfort food breakfast, without making you feel bloated. Lately, I've been ordering the TONKOTSU RAMEN. OMG, this ramen is by far, one of the best I've ever had! And it's consitently good. Very flavorful broth, fresh veggies, tasty noodles. Other good options are the TACOS, and the ADULTING IS HARD sandwich. Anyway, you MUST check this place out. The servers and owner are all very nice--love them. And the prices are reasonable, which makes it possible for me to come weekly You should definitely check this place out, it's a gem and a very nice change from the oh-so-common breakfast/pancake house. I was very surprised this was right in my backyard figuratively speaking. Took my wife to this quaint and nicely appointed eatery. While there is not a lot on the menu to pick, the decor and organization of the place is really nice. I had the ramen pork and side of cheese sandwiches whilst my wife had the sweet potato hash and a cup of flat white with oat milk. That was delish! Will definitely stop by again. My review and rating of Redbird Cafe is based solely on today's experience. I realize a lot of my disappointment is because the restaurant just opened a few days ago and they are working hard to fix the problems. And I really want to see this place succeed. What a wonderful and welcomed concept to Homewood and Flossmoor! So I keep all of my fingers crossed... As a single diner, I opted to sit at the large community table hoping more people would join me. But that wasn't the case, perhaps people are reticent to sit with a stranger. Nevertheless I support the concept of a community table and I will choose the same seat next time. I was greeted right away by a pleasant server who handed me a menu with most of the selections redacted. It was like a CIA document! I was left with only five choices. However, when I chose the pulled pork tacos, my server said they were also out of pulled pork. Choices down to four! I ordered the egg roll bowl and a cup of pour over coffee. It took just over 20 minutes for my coffee to arrive. I was told later that because each cup is made to order it might take as much as 10 minutes to get a cup, but no explanation as to why it took 20 minutes for a cup of coffee. That said, the coffee was delicious. I wanted a second cup but not at the expense of my schedule. The egg roll bowl was SO GOOD. Great combination of flavors, fresh ingredients, beautifully presented. The very nice man who made the coffee also explained that a farm to table restaurant is a dining experience that should be savored and leisurely enjoyed. It isn't fast food or even food made fast. According to him, one should expect to spend a little more time dining here than most other establishments for that reason. While I agree with that sentiment, I wish I would have known that before I sat down. I would have come back with more patience. I am definitely going back, if only to see what other options the menu has to offer. And I think the concept of farm to table is important and needed In our community! read more

Redbird is a welcome addition to the increasingly affluent Homewood restaurant roster. Existing as a make-shift "Cottage By Way of a Cafe" concept, the farm-to-table food stands out superlatively. My fancy "he went to college" description aside, Redbird is just a great l'il place to sit down, slow down, and enjoy some hand-crafted food. I took my family in for a "special" Mother's Day brunch, and everything was just great. We were immediately welcomed and sat. Everything is rustic-but-modern inside. The menu itself was fairly limited; curse my suburbanite "Greek Diner's serve 18 pages of menu items" upbringing! But, what WAS offered all sounded good. I would denote while they are certainly kid-friendly... at the time we went, they did not have any high chairs on hand. Not that we minded our younger son our lap... But he doesn't make eating easy when everything on the table is a potential toy. :) My son had the waffle -- which I'll be quick to note is hands down one of the better ones I've stolen a bite of in my 35 years on this mortal coil. I had a grilled cheese, served with eggs, kale, and sauteed onions. One bite straight though, and I was reminded how potent and amazing "farm to table" food really tastes. It's an odd descriptor, I know, but the best way to put it is that "everything tastes more of itself than comparably shipped-through-the-industrial-complex" way. The eggs were substantial. The cheese was mellow. The toast was hearty. The kale? Kaley! The side of roasted potatoes were also no slouch. My wife had the biscuits and gravy. If it was the only sad point of the meal, the ratio of gravy-to-biscuits was such that we needed to ask for more gravy. But our server ran out extra to us not 30 seconds after asking. If I have one significant gripe? It'd be that for all the farm-to-table goodness Redbird offers... the hand towels in the bathroom were clearly NOT made on a farm. Minus one star. I kid! Ultimately, Redbird Cafe is a fantastic place to sit down, slow down, and enjoy. The top notch coffee service (which needs some more cold coffee options for this wanna-be-hipster), the limited-but-all-yummy food, and the attentive staff make this a have-to-stop destination. me and my friend were looking for a nice spot to sit at and finish some of our homework, we walked in thinking it's like any other cafe. People sit there to focus and just have a quiet space to work and we expected to do the same. Right when we walked in the lady gave us a very rude look but we continued to sit down. While sitting I walked up and asked for the wifi password and she very rudely said it looking at me disgusted. About 5 minutes passed and she yelled across the cafe "are u gonna get anything?, this isn't a library." Me and my friend excused ourselves. Not only was she just rude to us but she also was talking bad about customers very loudly to a friend and just made the whole experience uncomfortable. Redbird is a small casual restaurant with a small but unique menu. The mug of coffee (decaf) was delicious. I opted today for some yogurt topped with seeds, nuts, dried fruit and honey. The portion was small but satisfying. I've been here for lunch and equally enjoyed the food. If your looking for large portions go somewhere else. I was very excited to hear that Homewood had hopped on board with the farm to table trend - I always have great experiences eating in those types of restaurants and this wasn't an exception. Four of us stopped in for breakfast during the week and really liked it. It's cute and simple inside and the food is pretty good. I ordered two pulled pork tacos and one breakfast taco, which I loved, and a side of bacon. My sister had the same but my mom ordered the adult grilled cheese and devoured it. It looked amazing (check out the picture I posted). My boyfriend was the only one who didn't love his meal. He had the Prairie waffles, which on the menu sounded like they would be full of flavor. Unfortunately, he said they were not and they were also delivered dry with no syrup. He asked for sauce and they offered honey but I think he would have loved to dump some syrup on them. Everything else at Redbird was great. The food was quick and the service was awesome. I think our waitress's name was Amy, and she was super nice and talked to us about all the food. They offer free Wi-Fi and have a great selection of beverages that are made to order: Tea, Coffee, Matcha, Kombucha, etc. The food menu and their hours are incredibly limited. It's a great alternative to your office space in the morning but not a place you can hunker down in the afternoon; they don't have evening hours. They have a fair selection of healthy food choices but the options are hit or miss. No smoothies or quick options here. read more
