Where do I begin, when you first observe the ambiance that is Redbar, it gives you a sense of a small side bar with a homie feeling. But in reality it is quite to the contrary, my experience here was something that could be considered abhorred.
Last night was by far one worst nights I've ever had in Brickell, and hands down it was to this place. To start with my review, please let me try to be as impartial as possible. The night was somewhat busy, as it is Halloween weekend, and there were only two bartenders present to provide service to a crowd of 80+ people.
While at this place, I was subjected to below sub-par service in the following ways. First, while being at the bar and repeatedly attempting to order a drink, the bartender with a top knot man-bun repeatedly looked over and said to wait. Initially I was fine with waiting, until a couple of guys that apparently he knew, pushed their way to the front of the bar and received preferential treatment over those who were already waiting. Second, both bartenders repeatedely waived people back and forth to the other to get drinks. In this never ending sea of ping pong both bartenders were quite obnoxious and rude. As I was finally able to order my drink, the bartender slides my drink across the bar to me while it almost spilled all over another customers costume. This type of careless behavior is not prime service.
After receiving my drink and waiting a total of 20 minutes, while being at the front of the bar, I finally receive the check with a watered down drink. The shining moment for my disgust with this place arrives at the bill. While the bill itself was $26 dollars for two watered down redbull and vodkas, the tax was $1.82, and the included gratuity of 18% (or $4.68) was present. Now, for the moment of angst. After seeing the bill, I readjusted the tip to $2 for poor service and a bad attitude. While disgusted with the service I understand that servers still have to make a living.
However, according to the bartender this was not good enough. So the bartender proceeded to yell at me and I told him that I'm not obligated to pay for poor service. Afterwards he proceeded to tell me that it's the law in Brickell and South Beach for the included gratuity practice. However to the contrary that is not so. In my frustration with this unsatisfactory service, I'd like to point out that gratuity is not mandatory to Florida minimum wage laws. Gratuity and/or the practice of tipping is an agreed upon service provided that the service is good.
The automatic application of tipping by a business does not make tipping at an establishment apart of the law. To the contrary this practice is a socially acceptable when a party of two or more recieve goods and services from a waiter/waitress. In this particular case with Redbar, the bartender clearly does not know his laws on fair wage practices. Just because Florida practices as an at-will-state in regards to employment, does not mean that businesses can force customers to tip.
After the irritation of the bartender attempting to tell me that is illegal to reduce the tip, I stated that it was not. So the bartender called a bouncer over, and proceeded to have the bouncer threaten me. In a manner of highway robbery, the bouncer threatened to call the cops if I did not tip the expected 18% gratuity. After the bouncer arrived, I attempted to show him the receipt, and explain to him that gratuity is not the law, it is just a good social practice. Then this where the night took a turn for the worst. The bouncer stood in my way, and made me pull cash out of my pocket to tip the bartender. Believe me when I say there is no issue, of me having the money, to pay for this bill of a mere $26. It is strictly the principle of receiving good service, or at the very least the courtesy to deal with customers in a civil manner.
With that being said, I will make it a point to highlight the shady business practices of this establishment. I will write to the commisionner about this incident to see that it does not happen to another customer. read more
