I visited Red Star for the first time yesterday. My sister met some former coworkers there who were celebrating someone's birthday. A couple people I know had been Red Star before and were less than enthusiastic about their experiences. One said the drinks weren't good, and another said it was "ratchet." She also said the service was terrible. They both said they visited once and never returned. Despite what others said, we decided to keep an open mind. We arrived after 5 pm, and the hostess greeted us warmly. We found our party easily in the rear of the establishment and were greeted by a tall, handsome gentleman who was doubling as a waiter and bartender. The space is large and cozy... the vibe is lively yet chill and inviting. There were a lot of regulars there, and the staff was very friendly with them. A little too friendly, whereas many of them were too busy socializing to be concerned about the patrons. Our waiter took our drink order and then came back to take our food order. After that he never checked on us. I watched as he hugged other customers while laughing and talking all night. I ordered the catfish nuggets and wanted some hot sauce but could never flag anyone down to ask for it. So, I just went without it. There also weren't enough napkins in the area where I sat, and I had to flag the waiter down to have the water carafe refilled. There appeared to be a manager there as well, wearing a suit coat and Jordans. He kinda reminded me of Daymond John from Shark Tank. He appeared to be helping out at the bar, but he also socialized with regular customers, so it's obvious the the restaurant culture is fostered from the top down. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but when the clientele is neglected, the business suffers. Poor customer service is what can stop someone from being a repeat customer. It's fine to be social, but the customers should always come first. The catfish nuggets and chicken wings were decent. The skin was crispy and flavorful, but the meat itself was bland. The food was edible, but it's certainly not spectacular. Go for the vibes, not the food. The drinks were also just okay. I had a couple of frozen margaritas that were much too sweet. My sister had the Froze, which was also very sweet. Honestly, the drinks tasted like juice. They weren't very strong either. The bartender clearly isn't giving out generous pours of alcohol. One of my sister's coworkers picked up the entire tab for everyone so I don't even know how much the bill cost. She's a regular customer and loves the restaurant. All of us celebrating there was her idea. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. They have multiple televisions if you want to watch a game & there are also slot machines in the front of the restaurant. The bathroom was well-kept and clean too. I'd return to Red Star because of the vibes... not necessarily for the food or drinks. I didn't think the environment was ratchet at all. There was a DJ spinning all night, and the music was a bit too loud, but other than that it was fine. The music is so loud that you can't hear the person next to you. I had never met my sister's coworkers and couldn't really get to know them because we could barely hear each other. The staff should definitely reconsider the volume level as it relates to the music. It's a restaurant, not a club. Overall, the experience was enjoyable, though. People were simply out enjoying themselves. There was no negativity or uncouth behavior. read more

I have been here multiple times. It's definitely a hit or miss. They don't use fresh juices for the bar drinks. They use everything premade and you can tell. We visited to watch the Bears game. It was extremely crowded. They informed the whole restaurant that they would not be making any food outside of fried foods. I really wanted to try the spinach and artichoke dip. I guess I will try that next time. We ordered the catfish bites and the salmon bites. The catfish bites were really good. I like them with hot sauce not with the sweet chili that they gave you. The salmon bites were extremely fishy, but they were fried well and seasoned well. They paired whale with the sweet chili sauce. They were just too fishy for me. The Tito's lemon drop and frozen margarita were the only drinks that I could actually say I enjoyed. If you are looking for a party, Vibe or you wanna watch the game definitely pop out there you will enjoy the vibes. Quite a distance from our home, but my daughter and I came out on Sunday evening to support our cousin's sorority event here. It was packed with the party plus the regular patrons, but it cleared out a bit after their normal closing time of 5:00. Our private party was scheduled until 8:00. We had a variety of cocktails. Our server was swamped so everything took long. We had to grab her when we saw her and make sure to order what we wanted up front. We had a long table and she did a good job of keeping everyone's checks straight. They have an urban menu with lots of options for brunch, appetizers or entrees. We were limited to the fried dishes, so we got several orders of the salmon bites and loaded fries. The salmon was delicious! Bite sized pieces and only slightly breaded. The sauce was a sweet chili but they went really well with the dipping sauce that came with the cauliflower bites a friend had. Others ordered the chicken and fish entrees which all looked really good. Service was very slow because there weren't enough servers for the crowd. I went here on a Saturday night, and I had a good time. I think the ambiance is nice. It's a regular neighborhood bar/restaurant. It is clean and maintained well. I ordered parmesan garlic wings, and it came with fries. I really liked the wings and the fries. They were cooked to perfection and flavorful. I wish they had a smaller option because I only wanted 4 wings, but they smallest amount I could order was 6. One thing I loved was that they give you whole wings and not wing portions. I also had a strawberry lemonade that was quite tasty as well. I did not have any alcoholic beverages, but the group I was with did. They seemed to enjoy the drinks. My only complaint was the music that the dj played. This is more of personal preference, but it wasn't my vibe. The wings were awesome! They had a special for $1/wing for reward members and it was easy to sign up. They were very crispy, the garlic Parmesan sauce was balanced. Our waitress was great (Kori) but once we got our food we had problems. My wife ordered a loaded baked potato that looked great but wasn't cooked. We ordered lamb chops with mashed potatoes and greens which came out ice cold (lamb chops were ok) . Loaded fries had 2 steak fries and 3 regular fries covered with way too much cheese. Overall it wasn't a good experience for us and the manager on duty did nothing to even try and rectify the situation. We'll today is my three year wedding anniversary and we wanted to keep things easy and affordable. My original plan was to go all out but we decided easy in today's climate is ok for year three. On Sunday they have karaoke...we could see a group of ladies through the window with mics singing and dancing together. Looked like they were having a ball. Staff at the door confirmed the Karaoke and the Tuesday night comedy show. They also have a weekend brunch. So lots to offer for everyone. The menu is urban and ethnic with greens, fish, chicken and paella and a host of specialty salads. The greens are Smokey and full of flavor. The catfish is crunchy yet moist. And the boom boom shrimp, has a real boom to it. The music is urban and hip and for one removed from the disco scene for so long I still recognize a lot of the music. Poor customer service! I ordered online and I specifically used their selections on my order which was made incorrectly and contained food items I'm allergic to. I immediately called them when noticed and they told me I would need to drive back there for them to process a refund in person despite using THEIR website to order my food and I HAD to do it tonight before they closed or the manager on duty would not give my refund or remake the order correctly. When asked to speak to the manager that was on duty, since they had to be the one to give me a refund, I was hung up on and then all my calls were ignored after that. Posted from a really old visit Server Ricki was pleasant with a big smile. She initially brought me catfish instead of crab cakes. It looked so good that I almost kept it. I'll be trying that next. My only complaint would be that my crab cakes were served fresh and hot but were plated on the catfish plate. I'm guessing because my eggs and potatoes weren't served hot. The service is top tier every time I'm there I enjoy the whiskey bar where I can watch my football games while it's whole party going at the second which is a total vibe. I've visited red star a couple times now and I must say it's very dissatisfying and disappointing each and every time I attend. For it to be a black own restaurant the staff and mangers do not represent this establishment well for the enjoyment of their customers. I've attended this restaurant for the purpose of my friends & I can't anymore. I attended today with my friend, and we was here for the tacos and margarita flight Tuesday's special. Before our waitress greeted us, another waiter dropped a stack of menus on my friend, then walked away. Then, our waitress, Troyonna started by taking our order and then returning to the table 15 minutes later saying, "I was just told that we were out of steak tacos". Remind you, it's Red Star's Tuesday special and it's only 6:00pm when we order. Okay, so my friend ordered a burger and I wasn't going to order food, just the flight. In the process of waiting for the drinks, Troyonna returned with one flight and said, "they messed up your drinks and made it frozen; so I'm waiting for them to make it on the rocks". My friend flight was brought back melted down I must add. In that process, I asked if I could order lamb chops and have fries on the side instead. Troyonna responded, " owe I don't know, the last time I did that I got in trouble". I asked her, "can you ask your mangers if they can accept this because I'm dissatisfied about the messed up drinks and not being able to order what I came for". She went back and talked to her mangers and said, "you still have to chose two different sides and I'm going charge a side of fries". I asked her to repeat her self; and she did with that same response. I cancelled my entire order. When the receipt came due to my friend making her food take out, they attempted to add my untouched flight to my friend receipt when I clearly cancelled the order and did not touch any drink. I highly would not recommend this restaurant. A manger never spoke with me even though I expressed my dissatisfying concerns. On February 8, 2023, around 8:30 am when I made my initial review, red star commented with their email. I emailed them immediately after at 8:54am. Instead of replying to my email, they block me on Instagram for my review. This is why I said the Owner, mangers, and employees disgraceful represent black owned businesses and I will not be returning. read more
