Shrimp PO Boy, deconstructed for my picky eater
Erica J.

I found out about this place on social media and decided to stop by while I was in the area. There was a minimal wait. You can scan the QR code at the door or near the entrance to add yourself to the waitlist. The food we entered was really good. The waitress was fantastic. She was the only waitress on staff this day and she handled the room with such grace.

Buttermilk Pancakes

I was craving Fish & Grits with homestyle pancakes. I remembered Hidden Manna and realized I haven't been in years. So I went one afternoon and was 100% satisfied! The servicers were friendly and got our orders right. Since it was a weekday it wasn't crowded like the weekends lol. The pancakes were different than I remember, but were delicious like my grandma used to make with buttery fried crispy edges. The fish was clean, tender, crispy and well seasoned. The creamy grits with the spicy cajan gravy couldn't have hit the spot more. I got perch because I don't trust everyone's catfish lol. But next time I'll get the catfish because I trust them now. Best Arnold Palmer too. 10/10 definitely recommend.

Seafood Omelete

Visited the restaurant on a Sunday for brunch with a party of 5. We were greeted and sat right away. This restaurant is on the smaller side but it gives you a hometown feel during your visit which is cozy. All the staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered the seafood omelet that comes with shrimp and crab meat along with grits or hashbrowns and pancakes. The eggs were fluffy and the seafood was cooked well. As a personal preference, I would of preferred a bit more seasoning but it was well executed. The grits were cooked properly and complemented the omelet. The pancakes were a good size and golden brown.

Catfish and grits

This food was bland but was at a good price point. I wouldn't come back here. Our service was pretty good too! Loved the mimosas but the food missed the mark

Shrimp & Grits

This place is a great little gem. I was here last weekend for a funeral. My cousin picked this place when I said I was some shrimp and grits. Their shrimp and grits were very good with some spice. We had fried green tomatoes with a remoulade sauce. I loved my lunch. A few other meals were a shrimp omelette with hollandaise sauce, and a traditional breakfast. We had mimosas, we ordered a bottle with cranberry & orange juice. The waitress staff & hostess were so nice and polite. The waitress had 4 different tables by us but you wouldn't known it cuz she catered to everyone. I will be back when I go back to visit my old home town.

Our server was nice. The food was decent, not the best I've had from there. Next time I won't go close to closing time.

Had a taste for gumbo and etouffee. Found out they had some of the best greens I've ever had. I recommend everything on their menu.

Rediculously overpriced for what they're serving! I'm sure they get few return customers.

Do they take reservations?

I love me some Hidden Manna Café, I had my birthday brunch there last year in July. It is a front runner for this year for my birthday dinner. I remember seeing a bar there do you serve drinks also?

Yes they do!

How is the coffee?

Wings so good I forgot to take a picture The green tea shot was also delicious and the young fashioned -top notch as well. The happy hour has 1/2 drinks so can't beat that. A couple people I know had been Red Star before and were less than enthusiastic about their experiences. One said the drinks weren't good, and another said it was "ratchet." She also said the service was terrible. They both said they visited once and never returned. Despite what others said, we decided to keep an open mind. We arrived after 5 pm, and the hostess greeted us warmly. We found our party easily in the rear of the establishment and were greeted by a tall, handsome gentleman who was doubling as a waiter and bartender. The space is large and cozy... the vibe is lively yet chill and inviting. There were a lot of regulars there, and the staff was very friendly with them. A little too friendly, whereas many of them were too busy socializing to be concerned about the patrons. Our waiter took our drink order and then came back to take our food order. After that he never checked on us. I watched as he hugged other customers while laughing and talking all night. I ordered the catfish nuggets and wanted some hot sauce but could never flag anyone down to ask for it. So, I just went without it. There also weren't enough napkins in the area where I sat, and I had to flag the waiter down to have the water carafe refilled. There appeared to be a manager there as well, wearing a suit coat and Jordans. He kinda reminded me of Daymond John from Shark Tank. He appeared to be helping out at the bar, but he also socialized with regular customers, so it's obvious the the restaurant culture is fostered from the top down. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but when the clientele is neglected, the business suffers. Poor customer service is what can stop someone from being a repeat customer. It's fine to be social, but the customers should always come first. The catfish nuggets and chicken wings were decent. The skin was crispy and flavorful, but the meat itself was bland. The food was edible, but it's certainly not spectacular. Go for the vibes, not the food. The drinks were also just okay. I had a couple of frozen margaritas that were much too sweet. My sister had the Froze, which was also very sweet. Honestly, the drinks tasted like juice. They weren't very strong either. The bartender clearly isn't giving out generous pours of alcohol. One of my sister's coworkers picked up the entire tab for everyone so I don't even know how much the bill cost. She's a regular customer and loves the restaurant. All of us celebrating there was her idea. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. They have multiple televisions if you want to watch a game & there are also slot machines in the front of the restaurant. The bathroom was well-kept and clean too. I'd return to Red Star because of the vibes... not necessarily for the food or drinks. I didn't think the environment was ratchet at all. There was a DJ spinning all night, and the music was a bit too loud, but other than that it was fine. The music is so loud that you can't hear the person next to you. I had never met my sister's coworkers and couldn't really get to know them because we could barely hear each other. The staff should definitely reconsider the volume level as it relates to the music. It's a restaurant, not a club. Overall, the experience was enjoyable, though. People were simply out enjoying themselves. There was no negativity or uncouth behavior.

We got margaritas which were nice! Great balanced drink! We ordered a turkey burger with tots and loaded tots. The burger came with no tots, kitchen messed up and arrived after I ate the burger. Loaded tots were good and the tots that were with the burger were good. The host of "Drink Bingo" and the DJ were amazing. Solid energy, lots of fun and we were entertained! You gotta pay attention though! lol! Although fun, we felt a bit uncomfortable because it was kiddos there and we were promoting shots and calling out the "favorite number" of "69" so as educators, we felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward. I think we were thinking it was 21 and over since it was "Drunk Bingo". I hope the kiddos didn't go to school and say, "what's my favorite number? 69!" Yikes! :( I would just recommend it be 21 and over for that reason and the fact that it's "Drunk Bingo", let's keep the kiddos at home on Thursday nights :)

I mentioned I was cold but they never closed it. We went for Saturday Brunch, it's filled with grit and something or waffles and something options. I wish the menu had more options but I went with girts and lamb chops w/shrimp added on. We order a shared plate of Henny wings and French toast they forgot about and it came out super late. I started with the margarita flight which first came out filled with juice and no liquor. I talked to the waitress about it, she tasted the pre-made batch and agreed it wasn't right. She came back to tell me this and that she would make me a new flight fresh. I was happy this would be a quick resolve but it took 45 min to get the replacement after mentioning it 2x. The replacement came and was good, just wish it came before we were ready to go. The food was delicious, the grits were amazing. Lamb cooked and seasoned just right. My only complaint is the bowl it was served in is an appetizer bowl, super small. I'm not looking for more food just wish it wasn't piled into the small bowl and I was given a small appetizer fork to eat it with. The Henny glazed wings were super sweet, like an orange chicken sauce or orange marmalade. It was too sweet and ruined that dish. French toast was decent and tasted better without the syrup. Service is very slow, but the food comes quickly if they remember what you ordered. I had to remind them about my shrimp and the Henny wings. Because of the service doesn't match the high price tag and the lack of follow through, I wouldn't return on my own. If a friend was hosting something there I would go but it wouldn't be my first choice.

This location has never missed the sauces, I always get them when I add it to my order. The wings are always perfectly coated in their sauces, and the staff is always pretty kind when I come in to pick up my order. I'd also like to make an honorable mention that the food is always neatly placed in the bags, and the bag is always sealed with a sticker. This is perfect. Today I actually ordered at the register, and the woman read back my order not only as I was telling her what I wanted, but after it was all complete too! She triple checked that she placed in the order as I asked. Portillos does this at their drive thru, and it's an amazing reassurance for the customers. It's always pretty cold inside which is actually nice, because it's summer and I've never been in a colder restaurant before! The inside is always kept clean, especially their drinks station. The only thing I always find odd about this location is that they don't have a garbage can, so if you eat inside you have to throw away your garbage outside, which is shared by the neighboring Dunkin. For a Matteson restaurant, it's sure well polished! Clean, has a kind crew, and well managed.
