The food seems to be on point each time I visit. It's somewhat crowded usually but that may be cause I come on Saturday around midday.. The service is always competent and friendly. There's not too much ambiance here but I'm not concerned Ed with that so much. I've never been disappointed in any way here. I'm a repeat customer. read more

Tried and true proven breakfast diner. This place is convenient because it is one block west of I-57 on 127th St. The service is outstanding and the classic diner food is as expected--just a bit expensive for a very dated ambiance. All in all - 4 out of 5 stars for me. Not a bad spot. read more

I like my off the beaten path dive breakfast places when I'm on the road and this one definitely lived up to that. Well it's not as divy as some places but it's not fresh looking or fancy so somewhere in the middle, it's definitely been there for a while. It's not very big and has booths along the walls with tables crammed in the center of the room. The place is very popular because the whole time I was there people came in and waited for tables and the phone never stopped with the take out orders and people were always walking in for take out. While I was there the crowd was police officers, a local pastor, family with a small child and everything in between so it has mass appeal. The menu had all the regulars and I was going to get the ham steak and eggs until I saw the country plate which is eggs, hash browns, sausage patties, and a biscuit covered in sausage gravy. When the plate hit the table I thought that I made a mistake because it was not the best looking country plate that I have been served. The eggs were good and cooked perfect with three of them. The hash browns were soft on the inside and crisped on the outside and seasoned, I like it. The sausage patties were good and flavorful, not the crappy bland kind, thank you. The biscuit was fresh and nicely browned with a nice buttery flavor that I liked as well. The sausage gravy was a little skimpy and very average at best but the tasty sausage and biscuit made up for that. My first impression of the country breakfast was completely wrong and it was actually pretty tasty and I finished the whole plate which I rarely do because I liked it and it was under $10. Overall my breakfast was solid and better than the average place and I can see why it's so busy while I was there. I would definitely go back here again with no problem but maybe at 6-7 am because at 8 am it's non stop balls to the wall. read more

I read reviews about this restaurant, so I thought I'd give it a try. I called ahead to inquire of wait time for a party of 2. Since it is father's day, i wasn't sure if the lines would be out the door. A lady answered the phone, told me there is no wait time. When I pulled up to the restaurant, I didn't realized how many times I have passed this eatery. It is literally around the corner from i-57 highway. Parking was full for a Sunday morning around 9:45am. No worries, we parked in the neighborhood on the street. We were seated right away. Our server was nice. In regards to the menu, it is your typical breakfast items. I would recommend if you like to have your hashbrowns with your meal, be sure to order a meal that already has has browns that come with it. If you order the hashbrowns as a side item then, it will cost $3.19 For a Sunday morning crowd, it was quiet in terms of the diners lol As for meals, I ordered steak omelette (it came with hashbrowns and choice of bread) I opted for pancakes. The hubby ordered, cornered and hash skillet. He ordered pancakes. I did read the previous reviews and they are right, our food came out quickly! Our food was tasty. I have had better pancakes. As I was just about finish eating my meal, I was scooping the last morsel of my hashbrowns when I noticed a blue coloring substance in the hashbrowns! As I pulled it apart, I realized it is plastic and was cooked with my hashbrowns (see attached photo) I told our waitress, and she spoke to the manager on duty. They gave me $3.00 off our bill. Eggshack baby, that's where it's at!! I stopped in again after my last visit a few years ago and this place has skipped a beat! I love the option of having breakfast for lunch. I went with Denver Omelet along with Hash Browns and some toast. The service was great and the atmosphere is relaxed. They also have video poker machines upstairs if you wanna gamble a little. They also have a nice cozy bar and additional booths to sit in as well! If you live near here or pass by this place, stop in! Nice staff, fair prices and good food. Win - win!! read more

You can tell that they have good food based on the volume of customers. The service is nice and the food is quick and delicious. Ham off the bone and all. If you go on a Sunday be patient cause it seems like the whole city does. The pancakes are amazing man like seriously they hold up to syrup so well. Great Place!!!! My food is always delicious. I always order the Texas Skillet with Pancakes and a bowl of their delicious Cream Of Chicken and Rice Soup. Its like going over a family member housr. Very inviting and the waitress always nice and friendly. I go so much she knows me now lol. Im always sitting where ever she at. Looking at all the good reviews I hate to be the barrel of bad news. I'm not a fan of this joint. My husband and I went this morning for breakfast. Grits was watery, eggs and sausage overdone and the pancakes didn't really have flavor. I observed the guy clearing and cleaning the tables off. He does not remove the coffee cups if they haven't been turned over with coffee in it. To me that's gross. Because like myself, I move the coffee cups. So if I touch them with my germs, and splash food on the cups so do other people. I was wondering y one of our cups had some marks on them. Watching him clean now I know y. They don't clean like they should. I won't go back. read more

Eggshack is okay, but it's certainly not a 4-1/2 star establishment I can tell you that. There's way better places to get a good breakfast in the Chicago area than Eggshack. I would rather go to Lumes on Western Ave. than here. Besides the food just being mediocre, why the f--- is this place so drafty? If you stop in here in the middle of winter don't plan on taking off your coat unless you want to freeze your a-- off! Turn up the heat for God's sake! Also watching the guys clean the tables in this place I question their cleanliness. read more

Hands down the best breakfast spot I've been to in a LONG time!!!! I spend tons of time in the loop and downtown areas and time after time my girlfriend and I marvel over the fact that there is no place that can put breakfast together as well as The Eggshack. This was my first time and I definitely was impressed with the food and service. It's a hole in the wall and those usually are the best places to eat. It was clean and a very good vibe. I got the smoked sausage skillet and it was delightful. The biscuit was light and fluffy plus my wife enjoyed her turkey divine omelette. We both enjoyed our grits not watery or lumpy. Eggshack is found right off the highway on the stretch of 127th St called Obama Drive. Back in 2010 it was the first street in the country to be named after President Obama. I found the shack thanks to the Chef at Frontera Grill. According to my chef the shack has the best ham on the bone in Chicagoland. I take his wisdom to heart- I brought my girl down. The eggs were perfectly cooked, potatoes crispy on the outside, and chef was right. The ham on the bone was worth the trip- meaty but tender and full of hammy flavor. Best I have had. Stopped by here for breakfast. I got an omelette because was trying to be healthy. It is an older building, but I think the food is really what matters. It was good by the way. I also think service was great. They were fast, friendly and very attentive. I really like that about them. They are right off the highway on 127th so I recommend any one stop by there. read more
