When I knew we were coming to League City for two weeks, I started my Yelp restaurant investigation. Red Oak Cafe is a restaurant we hadn't visited before and it's super close to my sister's house. Today was the day. First, the ambiance. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is clean and has some cute touches including the lighting fixtures and some iron work here and there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The tables and chairs are not fancy. The walls are nearly empty with the exception of the oak tree and biblical verse that covers most of one wall. It's just a little plain overall.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server was very nice and helpful. The time it took for our breakfast to arrive was just about right. It was clear our meals were prepared after our order hit the kitchen. I had the Guacamole Toast - house-made guacamole, tomatoes and sprouts atop thick-sliced wheat toast. It had a bit of a kick and a lemony flavor. It was quite tasty. It came with hash browns, which were surprisingly delicious. They weren't extra crispy, which I like. Rather, they were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Sometimes hash browns can be a throwaway, but these were a wonderful accompaniment to the guacamole toast. I ordered a side of bacon - three pieces. They weren't super crispy, but they weren't limp. Once again, as with the hash browns, the bacon was cooked perfectly. It was actually a delight. Mark has the Hot Mess Bowl - two biscuits, two strips of bacon, two sausage patties, scrambled eggs and country gravy served with hash browns. Jalapeño gravy was an option and our server mentioned the meal could come with a half country and half jalapeño. Mark asked about the jalapeño gravy. She said it was very good so Mark opted for all jalapeño gravy. The meal was accidentally served with both gravies. Mark said having it would be fine. He cleaned his bowl so it was clear he enjoyed it. It was a LOT of food! Even mixed, the gravies were definitely spicy. While Mark loves spicy food, if he were to get this meal again he'd stick with just regular country gravy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The food and service were great. The ambiance was definitely lacking.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I wavered between a three and four star review. Because food is ultimately the most important thing, I opted for four stars. If half stars were a thing, I'd give Red Oak Cafe 3.5 stars.

Big breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash browns, biscuit, and strawberry/Oreo pancakes.

We went because we heard amazing reviews about their sweet cream pancakes, and we were not disappointed! The entire meal was a treat! My daughter and I shared the big breakfast (pictured) and brought home leftovers. Our pancakes were strawberry and Oreo and as you can see from the picture, we couldn't wait to take a picture to try them, delicious!! The sweetest part of our visit was our server Linda! She was so sweet, gracious, and attentive, make sure you ask for her!!

For a great cup of Coffee with lots of options be sure to check out Red Oak Cafe.

If you're looking for a great cup of coffee and delicious food Red Oak Cafe is your spot. Lots of coffee options and creative choices for food. Pro-tip if you order a meal with the sausage gravy try it half regular and half jalapeño. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Always friendly and always clean this place is a definite must.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Eggs with bacon/ hasbrown (part of the biscuit and gravy plate)

Amazing breakfast... I had the biscuits and gravy plate... I requested my gravy on the side since I asked for the jalapeño gravy and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it... well I LOVED IT. The plate comes with eggs bacon and hash-brown... honestly 2 people can it from this plate since the portions are big. We also had a stack of pecan pancakes and they were delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place has multiple bible verbs thru out the restaurant which we love.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Place was clean and our waitress was amazing too![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

This was by far one of the best places I've been in awhile for breakfast and at the price I paid for it let me tell you it was well worth it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambience of the place quaint and quiet, somewhat of a homely feel and still and quiet like library people are just concentrating on eating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very different from any place I've been because the bathroom you can leave words of wisdom on sticky notes on the wall to give people I suppose for inspiration.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All in all I give this place and A++, so if your long for breakfast to eat off of all day and maybe into the next this is the place to go.

Chicken Salad on a croissant & Tomato Basil soup.
    Jennifer V.

I always enjoying dining here especially for breakfast, the portions are huge definitely worth the price. But recently I went at lunch time & tried their pick 2 and I chose the chicken salad on a croissant & their tomato basil soup. Neither one was good, they both lacked flavor. The chicken salad was bland & dry the tomato basil soup was bland as well and there were chunks of carrots. Not the tastiest meal I've had there.

You just don't see that often and I wanted to try it. The stars aligned and my family and I met up here for a weeknight dinner. Alvin is the true definition of a small town. It is just south of Pearland and life moves a little slower out here. Atleast for time being as it is becoming more developed now. The building itself is old and full of character. Everyone seemed to know each other. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, but service was a tad bit slow at times. My family isn't a big drinking family so we stuck with water and sodas, but they have quite a nice bar program here. They have a really impressive beer selection, a long list of specialty cocktails and lots of wine to choose from. I'm definitely coming back to check that out without the fam. For appetizers, we got an order of the scotch eggs and the Bavarian pretzel sticks. This was my first introduction to scotch eggs and a wonderful one at that. You really can't go wrong with anything wrapped in sausage and deep friend. It was a nice treat and something I will not be sharing next time. The pretzels were also very good. Our waitress suggested some cheese sauce to accompany those. These sticks of goodness were excellent. For my entree, I was stuck on a few items as their menu is pretty extensive. Our waitress said my option for the Pork Milanesa was the way to go, so I did. I've had milanesa at Mexican restaurants, but never in a tavern nor prepared this way. This was hand battered in panko and then topped with a mushroom gravy. It comes with broccoli and mashed potatoes but I substituted the veggie for mac and cheese. This dish was very good and the portions were very generous. Enough for me to have a full second meal minus the sides. The pork was thinly pounded and kept it's crunch even doused in gravy. The gravy was rich and very delicious. My family got a mix of items like the philly cheese steak, flat iron steak salad, tavern salad, and chicken fried steak. For research purposes and for my loyal readers, I tried everything. There wasn't anything that was bad to me. We were full so desserts didn't happen on this trip. Overall, Gordon Street Tavern is a solid spot that I would happily return to if in the area.

The food tasted okay, but it definitely lacked spices and in my opinion needs some TLC. One menu item that caught my attention was the Grown-Up Grilled Cheese: three types of cheeses, Granny Smith apple slices, bacon slices, and sourdough bread. Now I thought that the apple slices come on the side right? Nope, they were cooked in the sandwich. I don't know who came up with the concept of adding the apples into the sandwich, but whatever; I've tasted weirder things. Still, the sandwich didn't taste bad; that's just a weird concept in my opinion. The worst part of our service was the server. She didn't exactly introduce herself, but she did ask how we were with an apathetic tone. Like I said, she didn't tell us her name. Only way I can describe her is she wore eyeliner, red lipstick, and her blonde hair in a clip. During our visit to the restaurant, she just seemed like she hated her job and was emotionally constipated. When I wanted to substitute a side order of white chicken chili with the Grown-Up grilled cheese (I knew there would be an upcharge), she told me in a somewhat aggravated voice that there would be an upcharge. I told her calmly that I understood as the menu had specified. The only time she came by was to ask if we were done with our plates or needed a coffee refill, but not on how the food tasted. But yes, our server was probably the worst part of our visit. I've met Russians who were less cold than our server. I probably won't return unless the server gets an attitude adjustment or just leaves.

This isn't a shiny, soulless concept bar with Edison bulbs and a marketing team. It's a neighborhood joint that understands the fundamentals: cold beer, poured correctly; food that knows what it is; prices that don't insult you; and a staff that actually gives a damn. Let's talk beer first, because they clearly do. The draft list is deep and thoughtful--enough variety to satisfy the hop-chasers, the lager loyalists, and the folks who just want something cold and honest after a long day. And yes, they know how to pour a proper Guinness. Settle time. Correct head. No shortcuts. That alone tells you everything you need to know about their priorities. The menu doesn't try to reinvent the wheel or lecture you about provenance. It's bar food done with intention. The street tacos are the kind you order expecting "good enough" and end up wishing you'd ordered two more. Balanced, flavorful, no unnecessary nonsense. The fried cod special? Exactly what it should be--hot, crisp, flaky inside, and served without ego. Comfort food that respects the eater. Prices are fair. Refreshingly fair. The kind of prices that make you relax, order another round, maybe stay longer than planned. That's not an accident--it's hospitality. This is the kind of place that reminds you why local bars matter.
