Wowsy Ramen place in downtown Nelson , BC ... we stopped here on our way to hot springs in the mountains ... the broth was rich and flavored with ginger, cilantro seeds and green onion, mixed in with fresh miso, the chicken was soft and fresh, pickled egg was fresh tasting and flavored right ... a must stop ... read more

Took my son here for his birthday lunch, we had never been before and had been wanting to go for quite a while. Everything looked SO good when it got to our table (we got an appy of potstickers or dumplings? can't remember) which were...ok, edible but not great. And then we each got ramen, his was chicken, mine was pork. The eggs/chicken/pork that decorated the top of the dish was really good, but the broth and noodle lacked any flavour at all. The broth tasted like slightly eggy water, I expected a lot more from a pho. So we ate the toppings and a couple bites of the soup but couldn't stomach anymore, so when we asked for the bill, the waitress saw we hadn't eaten our meal and asked if it was okay, I told her we didn't really like it and explained how it tasted and that it was lacking any flavour so she talked to someone in the kitchen & they didn't charge us for the ramen, which as really nice. Sadly our first and only time there put us off of ever wanting to going back. read more

Have you ever had ramen with a miso butternut stock? I'm not a vegetarian but this is definitely a "must try" experience if only to inspire your own ramen making. read more

Outstanding menu and meal. Soft boiled eggs marinated overnight traditional Japanese style - outstanding. Loved the butternut squash bowl with mushrooms and zucchini noodles. Butternut squash gyoza really good and garlic edamame SO good (large portion). Spinach salad really good and nice beet curls on top. Ginger margarita was ok - I liked the ginger flavor but not the cucumber. Nice and warm inside with pleasant fire burning in the wood stove. Atlantis mocktail full of super herbs and absolutely delicious. I ordered a second with some gin on the side and left with such a nice buzz! I wish they offered brown rice noodles instead of white rice noodles. House made kombucha yum! read more

Red Light Ramen Bar - Tantan Pork - Ramen Near Me - Nelson, British Columbia

My partner and I were on a road trip to Nelson and Ainsworth last week. We happened upon Red Light Ramen Bar and wanted to try the place out. Ramen and a bar together?! The concept was amazing. As a previous review mentions, the place has a ton of potential but fell short. The vibe was great, there was a live DJ and people seemed like they were having a great time. The cocktail and alcohol selection seemed decent but because we were driving we opted out and decided to have non-alcoholic beverages. My partner ordered the hot cacao, it had a ton of ingredients listed and he ordered it because it was intriguing. The drink in our opinion (I tried it) just wasn't good, he didn't finish it. I ordered the Jun tea and it was basically tasteless and watered down. I had to use the lime they used for garnish so that it would have some flavour. I often drink Kombucha, and understand that Jun is a lighter since it uses green tea but I didn't think it would taste like slightly limed water. Now on to the ramen, we ordered two different types of ramen - the kabucha with kabucha miso and pork tonkotsu ramen with charcoal. With the amount of listed ingredients placed in all the ramen we thought it would taste great -- we were disappointed. The food and presentation looked good, the egg was great but the most important thing about ramen, the broth, lacked in flavour and salt. I found the pickled ginger (the type you get as a side to sushi) in our ramen gave me bombs of sweet vinegar ginger that was overpowering. Now, I understand the concept of brightening up a dish with something pickled but that flavour was not welcome -- especially if there was no richness or depth of flavour to cut. I gave this place 2 stars because of it's atmosphere. It seems like a fun place to go, hang out and have drinks. I wouldn't recommend the food. read more

Located in an alleyway just off the main road, this place has a nice patio with four tables for dining in--good for COVID times. I ordered the tantan butternut miso, a spicy version of the regular butternut miso which for some reason doesn't come with tofu while the regular does. To make it vegan, they just omit egg -- I asked if the egg could be substituted for tofu and they declined. Not impressed with that kind of stinginess; why should I pay the same amount for less food, especially for an already expensive ramen ($15.75 plus tax). Anyway, the ramen itself is very good, though more reminiscent of a curry. The flavour is a nice mix of the squash and curry, with traces of miso. Really think broth, which is again more reminiscent of a curry. Two pieces of squash, decent portion of noodles, some wakame, green onion, fried onion, and a few pea shoots. I wish there were more veggies and substance in general, but I was satisfied enough. Solid spot, but it could be improved in the aforementioned ways. read more

It was okay. We were craving Ramen so we ended up here on our visit. We tried the prawn gyozas, the server makes them behind the bar which was kind of cool. Also tried the Pork TanTan ramen. Gyozas weren't very good but the Ramen was good. It's kind of fusiony but I would go back. Beer and cocktails were pretty good. read more

Wasn't impressed. I was expecting a lot more than ses same drenched noodles and an egg for 18 dollars. The squash soup is interesting but too rich for the noodles. Looks like the place has a nice atmosphere but they really have to work on their offerings. read more

Came to Red Light today for a warm up with some Ramen and were blown away. The pork dumplings were amazing, on par with Momofuku. The Ramen was also amazing. The pork was perfectly cooked and you could easily tell the care that went into it. I'd come here again and highly recommend it. read more

I'm writing this review because this place has tons of potential but fell short on a few important things. We were on our way to Rel-ish when we saw the sidewalk sign that there is a ramen bar in the alley. Sounded great to us and we wanted to love it. A small modern little place like you'd find in Japan. The place was slammed and from my perspective, I saw one waiter, doing the best he could with an owner/manager micro managing, pointing fingers and ordering everyone around without doing much himself. The waiter did well with what he had to work with, but the food? The dumplings looked great, but the dumpling itself was over-boiled. The ramen noodles were perfect, but the pork was dry and tasteless. Also, $70 seems super high for an app, glass of wine and beer, two bowls of ramen. We'll try it again next time we are in Nelson. I hope they figure out the kinks, because it is a GREAT idea and concept. read more

Wow....the quality and flavor of their dumplings are out of this world. Ramen is the best I've had in years. We will come back!!

Good place for chilling. Ramen are good. But far way from authentic. I hope to improve on broth. Very good passion about noodle soup. Good understanding ramen and beer combinations. Jinger on the ramen soup is not proper. read more

Holy cow so good! We started with the prawn dumplings. They were so delicate and perfectly steamed. I also had the butternut miso with pork belly and tan tan. The broth was complex and so flavorful. The noodles were perfect and the egg had the most creamy orange yolk (they use local eggs). We also tried the pain killer cocktail. Unique and refreshing! Will definitely be back! read more

This was my favorite restaurant when I visited Nelson. Top notch ramen. Unique menu with some interesting dishes. Killer dumplings and excellent bowls. The ingredients in the ramen bowls were all incorporated really nicely and everything tasted super fresh. I went twice during my stay and I really enjoyed the butternut squash ramen bowls. Would very much recommend if you're visiting or staying In Nelson. 5 stars, that's the review. read more

Cold ramen and corked wine. This place had poor service and the guy argued with 5 of us when we said the wine was off! No compensation or offers to resolve it. Over priced venue and a weird layout that makes you go outside to access the washrooms. This place has not made efforts to accommodate paying customers. Would not recommend. read more

Awesome food and a great drink menu with lots of options to choose from. Check out the mellow live music they have Wednesday nights!

Yes, it may be sort of expensive for a back alley noodle den, but the ramen is very good and mostly authentic. I lived in southern Japan for a while, Sasebo, so I got to appreciate good ramen and Japanese hospitality. They also have bone broth, great for a cold damp day, which is most of the winter here! read more

This place is right up our alley. Local, sustainably raised meats, Kimchee made in house and really nice teas from the local tea shop. I have no idea why this has poor ratings from others, as to me, it's really great ramen that isn't too salty, the noodles are perfectly cooked and the ingredients high end and fresh! read more

Mmmmm this place is awesome! Went there for dinner on Sunday night with the family and the service was great and fast. The food was delicious! Some soup places think that salty broth means tasty broth, but Red Light's broth is flavourful and not salty. Beautiful mix of veg and meat in with the noodles. The fact that they source their ingredients locally as much as possible is a huge plus for me. The atmosphere is great too. Relaxed and not stuck up. I will definitely be going back. Well done Red Light! read more

We arrived just a minute before our reservation and we're told that a big group of people had taken our chairs for their table. They didn't have reservations- just showed up. I looked over and the menus were on our table but only 2 chairs for our party of 5. We waited about 30 minutes for another table to clear out and then their chairs were transported to our table. The other overloaded table who stole our chairs just kept on talking and ordering booze not even acknowledging us. And no apologizes from the management. Just business as usual.....somebody should clue them into restaurant management ie - don't let a gang come in and takeover. read more

Poor excuse for a Ramen Bar, they don't make their own noodles and service is terrible, broth is oily and doesn't have good flavour. The menu for kids is very limited. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone, you will be disappointed and pay far to much for what you get. read more

Everything was made super well! Cocktails were amazing, and the bowls were so good. It seemed very authentic. We got edemame, Asian slaw, and one each of the ramen bowls. Wait staff was very kind. Cool atmosphere too. Will definitely be back when we return to Nelson! Yum!! read more

Had a really wonderful lunch here. Even if it was warm outside it was very comfortably air conditioned and the ramen didn't make us too warm. The flavors in the broth were delicious. It's just a 1/2 block off Baker St. so does not get the foot traffic like the restaurants on Baker, so we would not have found bit if not for Yelp. read more

Love it. You can taste the care and attention that goes into every bowl. It is obvious they carefully select every ingredient. So good. Safe to say there cocktail list is one of the best in Nelson. read more

I've been to lots of ramen places and I have to say this place is one of the worst. It's an overpriced hipster joint that's better to get a beer than a bowl of noodles. I ordered the pork tonkatsu ramen and a kids ramen which took 20+ minutes to arrive and they're not even busy. The pork tonkatsu broth is pretty tasteless and has gooseberries in it which I bit into and is really disgusting and should never be in a bowl of noodles. The broth itself is about as good as instant ramen broth without the msg. The kids ramen came without broth and was topped with nutritional yeast. My kids wouldn't eat it so I have to pour soya sauce on it and down that not wanting to waste food. When we got up to pay, we can see the 'chef' making the ramen who's this lethargic white kid who looks like he's coming down from all the drugs post shambala and is hating his job. I cannot speak for the hygiene of the guy but he doesn't look healthy to me. All in all, a pretty bad experience and to top it off, it was ridiculously expensive for a couple bowls of 3rd rate noodles. Definitely would not recommend and never going back. Save your ramen cravings for somewhere else or just go get some gourmet instant stuff, you'll regret it less. read more

Insane Ramen! As good if not better than any I've had anywhere outside of Tokyo and Honolulu. So stoked to have a place like this in Nelson. Run don't walk to check this place out. I'm torn about writing this review - as I'd hate to have it get too busy - but when someone is producing this quality of food - it would be disingenuous not to spread the word. Great service, good drinks, and the room / interior is awesome. Nice work Red Light folks - we'll be back! read more
