We were out on the town taking in all the wonderful places to eat on Baker Street in Nelson BC. We settled on Broken Hill. There was outdoor seating that was wonderful for this hot evening, but there is a bit of a wait to get that seating. It is an umbrella covered seating area with a candle on the table, giving a romantic or cozy feeling. The service was nice but busy as expected. The server had a nice approach, but I felt like I was being sold items that the server first said she did t care for, but as I selected the item, she then said it was a great choice and that she liked it. I'm never really interested in the likes or dislikes of the server, but their description of dishes and answers to questions about ingredients or items on a dish on invaluable. I had the spicy fried chicken sandwich with a salad. The chicken breast was perfectly prepared with a nice crunch. It was served on a brioche bun. I had sharp cheddar cheese with the usual burger toppings. I am now appreciating that spicy, according to the palates of European - associated community, is not the same as it would be in some Latin, Thai, or Black/African communities. I love moderate to high heat and spice. What is considered "very spicy and hot", to my palate, was mild and tasty. That being said, it was a tasty burger and the salad was fine. We did not order dessert given how busy it was and we were tired from a long day. I would recommend this place to eat as a bit of an upscale bar food place. I would recommend that the chefs learn how to adjust the heat and spice for those of us believing the menu when it says hot and spicy*** as server for increased heat and spice. read more

The food here was amazing. Portions are huge though. For two we could easily have shared the mac & cheese. The service, however was absolutely terrible. Two tops are seated at the bar. That's fine and our preference anyway. But we seemingly didn't have a sever assigned. The bar is huge and the bartender was always busy at the other end. On this evening, reservations were placed at the far end, by the dish area. Our order was eventually taken by the host. No one ever came to check in or offer a refill of beverages or absolutely anything else. Eventually, haven given up on that second drink, we asked one of the waitresses of we could have our tab. She said she'd "get our server" but then ignored us and no one ever came. The second attempt with a different server was finally success. No one was outright rude to us but the service was not at all hospitable. If you're a 2-3 top to a high top table to have a shot at a proper server. read more

The food was an exquisite showcase of why Canadian butter is so much richer and creamier than US butter. The Slam Dunk and accompanying mac and cheese had rich, gooey and creamy cheese. The chicken and waffles were fried perfectly with a crispy outside and moist, tender chicken inside. The waffles had a hint of vanilla and were lightly crispy in the outside and steamy doughy goodness on the inside. The server Lisa was friendly and attentive. The bathrooms were downstairs and clean. We had a great time checking out Broken Hill for brunch. The food is so good, I had the brisket Mac and cheese and it was unreal. The drinks were fantastic too, the espresso martini was delicious. We had a lovely lunch at Broken Hill. It was a cool rainy day so the patio seating was unoccupied. Hand sanitizer is on a table as you enter and you are directed to the back of the room to view the menu that is projected onto the back wall. I had a difficult time reading the menu because I found it a bit blurry and not clear. My husband mentioned the same problem - maybe the projector was out of focus that day. They have nice high ceilings and the tables are well spaced apart so there was no concern about being too close to other patrons. Complimentary popcorn that I believe had a garlic butter sauce applied was brought to our table. It was delicious. We shared a clubhouse sandwich with a side for lunch. I cannot remember the side we ordered but the clubhouse was delicious. It was generously filled with bacon, real chicken meat, tomatoes and lettuce. The service was very good. My husband wanted a beer but didn't know what to order. Our server asked what kind of beer he liked and she brought the perfect beer to the table for him. The washrooms are downstairs and were clean and well maintained. It was a great lunch stop and we would return again when we visit Nelson. read more

I was initially hesitant with the price point of this "bbq spot" but everything we had was amazing. The cocktails were so flavorful and unique.. my favorite was the sour x which had a shrub style vinegar taste. The brisket sandwich was the most moist bbq I've ever had, with the perfect blend of sauce, slaw, and a fluffy bun. We also shared the fried cauliflower with salt and pepper dry rub. This would have stood alone flavor-wise, but we also got the Nashville hot sauce on the side. The sauce was a bit separated so it wasn't impressive but overall the experience was great! read more

Beyond disappointing. As a local I have been dragged here many times for a beer and every time someone caves and gets something to eat they are disappointed and talk about it for days. This restaurant has become a bit of a local joke. Lately, they have been getting very greedy. Recently we ordered the $18 dollar jalapeño poppers, thinking they must be amazing- they're EIGHTEEN DOLLARS for FOUR jalapeño poppers. Some of the worst jalapeño poppers anyone had ever had. They were soggy and had no heat to them. Most things are really bad to average and the prices are astronomical. So so disappointing! read more

Wife and I visited Broken Hill for dinner. I had the ribs which were tender and tasty. I liked their bourbon sauce best. Wife had the Brussel sprouts as she wasn't hungry. She liked them with bbq sauce on them. Overall service was fine and food was good read more

We ate here while on vacation in Nelson. Some of the best BBQ I've had. I had the 1/2 rack of ribs with Mac and cheese. Ribs were so good on their own, but I love extra sauce. They have 3 homemade sauces. One is original bbq style, the second a bourbon base bbq, and 3rd a Memphis mustard bbq. I actually liked the original best, but could depend on what meat you're using it with. My wife has the 1/2 chicken that came with Brussel sprouts. Also exceptionally good. Highly recommended, and they have a great variety of beers and cocktails. read more

We ordered a 'shebang for 2' which is a brisket and pulled pork for $45 (so overpriced!) and both meals were tasteless..It was very dissappinting, how difficult can be to season the meats properly? It wouldn't hurt them to improve on the food presentation too, you're not serving dog food. read more

Fantastic dining experience! The staff were super friendly. Cool atmosphere, casual with loads of space. The food was great! We sampled all 3 bbq sauces With our yummy burgers, all made in house. Kirsten, our fab and super friendly server, told us they sold the bbq sauce by the bottle. We bought some it was so good! She also recommended the ice cream they make there in house and she wasn't wrong... it was incredible! Highly recommend. read more
