My wife of 35 years and I wanted a date night. We made reservations for 7:30 at Red Lantern. We got there at around 7:20 and asked if we could be seated slightly earlier than our reservation. The host said sure, just one minute. One minute turned to 20 minutes. We went and asked what was going on and the hostess obviously had forgotten about us. She took us to a table. As we walked through, we saw multiple empty tables. Strike one. We sat and waited and waited and waited. If you have bored yourself with any of my other reviews, you know that service is more important to me than the food. We eventually had to ask one of the ladies clearing another table if we could place our order. About ten minutes later a server arrived. She took our drink order and food order. We didn't see anyone for the next 15 minutes. We saw a gentleman walking around the space that we surmised was the manager, he was. We told him that we were just being ignored. We said we had ordered drinks 15 minutes ago; he asked what they were, and in 30 seconds we had them. He apologized and went off to make things right. Strike two. We got our food and it was okay. That's the best we could say, okay. We love Chopsticks in Citrus Heights, China Villa in Roseville, they make very, very good Chinese food. Red Lantern was 2 stars below them. Strike three. It was my first time coming here with my family for my dad's birthday. We did a la carte/ family style and it was good for the most part. It just tasted a bit salty for most of the dishes like the calamari, and the chicken dishes. We ordered a lot of food (we were hungry and didn't get to take photos of all of them) and we had a party of 13 (including baby :-) ). And my favorite dish was probably the tofu/bok choy dish. And I recommend that along with the rice, fish and chow mein. I wish they had more vegetable dishes and less oily ones. I also wish they had the spicy mustard/chili oil and a sauce for the calamari. The service was great (which got this review at 4 stars) and the servers were attentive. The ambiance and restaurant appeared to be clean and bright. We decided to grab dinner before a concert at Thunder Valley, and we made reservations to ensure seating. It's a good thing that we had reservations, because apparently the nicer restaurants don't really take walk-ins when they have events going on. We ordered drinks and dumplings to start our meal. I ordered a restaurant, special called the red dragon. Based on the description it sounded like it was going to be tasty, a little, sweet, and right up my alley. I had asked for super light ice and a drink, when the drink arrived, the glass was filled with ice. The drink itself was mediocre at best , and it was obvious that the bartender doesn't know how to make a mixed drink. The flavors were completely off, and the drink overall was not great. Service at this point had been challenging. When we were first seated, the waitress came over and asked us what we wanted to order for dinner. We haven't even opened a menu or decided what we were going to have. When we order drinks and appetizers she wanted a dinner order at the same time. We both politely told her that we wanted to wait until we had drinks and appetizers and we still need to decide on dinner. She seemed incredibly displeased with that. The dumplings were also very mediocre. They were gummy and the filling lacked flavor and seasoning. The dipping sauce was rather odd. It wasn't a soy sauce, it wasn't anything that enhanced the dumplings, and it just seemed very miss placed. We ordered the sizzling beef, tenderloin and fried rice to share. The serving sizes are incredibly generous, and definitely shareable for more than just two people. The rice was absolutely incredible. It's probably the best fried rice I've had in a very long time. It wasn't Granier dry, it was moist, and filled with flavor, and all the goodies that you would want in fried rice. Hats off to the chef that made the rice. That was the best part of the meal. The sizzling beef was really tasty. The meat was tender, but it should've been served in smaller more edible sized pieces. The vegetables that were made with it were on the raw side, and raw asparagus is not our jam. It would've been nice to have the meal or the drinks fixed, but the waitress made herself scarce and didn't bother to come over and check on us after the food was brought to the table. It was pretty much like she could not be bothered. The overall impression is, that service was less than it should've been, the food was OK, but not anything that I would go out of my way to go back just for this restaurant. read more

This four star is mainly because this place was open and our wait was not too long after watching a concert at The Venue in Thunder Valley Resort and Casino. The place is nicely decorated and clean. The food could probably be more flavorful but nevertheless met our expectations. We had the Wor Wonton Soup which was okay. We tried their Yang Chow Fried Rice which was more than enough for the three of us and had shrimps and barbecue pork. Also, because it was too late to get the foods, we did not finish, we gave the reception to hold our foods (after packing in the bag) and wrote down our name for later picked up, but after 2 hours be back to get it, the receptionist said there is no foods holding there... maybe they gave to a wrong person! The drinks from the bar were great. Got the Emerald and highly recommend it. However, the dishes were lacking. After ordering it took way too long for an appetizer to come out and then everything came with it. It wasn't a busy day, went right at opening and seated promptly with only three other tables occupied. Would not recommend the honey walnut prawns, did not have flavor. Surprisingly the fried calamari was flavorful after reading other reviews. Inconsistently though the Singaporean rice noodles were heavily salted and over cooked on some parts and other parts no spices. Also, not including rice with a $20 entree is insane. I've been wanting to try this place inside of thunder valley for some time now. The food was decent just was not anything with wow factor. The best part of my meal was my lychee martini. It was delicious I would challenge the restaurant to find a way to make it look more appetizing though. You will see in the picture it but a catch your eye drink. The food was tasty but way too much so I felt guilty wasting it. I had a concert right after. I got the Singapore noodles and they were ok. I just expected a more bolder flavor profile. An elegant decor style Asian cuisine inside TV. As we sat down we ordered the Peking whole duck $65 and ordered ahead mainly because we knew it would take time to prepare. And the service staff nodded and took our order and walked off. Another service staff came to take the rest of our order which was the pork chow mien, fried chicken wings (not photos), Mongolian beef, hot and sour soup. We waited about 35-40m before our food arrived and it arrived cold. Like it sat back there and someone forgot to bring it out. Anddd the presentation looked sad. It tasted ok nothing worth mentioning. The price of the food was overpriced. I don't mind paying over the top for food but it needs to tastes amazing. The service was great just no so much the food. They made early dinner reservations on Open Table. It has a beautiful interior and was empty at 4:00 pm but got crowded by the time we finished dinner. Overall all the dishes were good portion and tasty. Service was good and attentive. For a casino restaurant I was surprised it was as good as it was. Didn't take pictures of all the dishes since I didn't think I would be rating a casino restaurant. The Wor Won Ton was good. Broth was clean and not too salty and the won ton was large and very good filling. We ordered the Peking duck, which was priced at $65.00, expecting it to be a highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, it came out 10 minutes after we had already finished eating everything else. On top of that, it took over 30 minutes just to start getting any food. The duck felt like an afterthought.  We also had the Mongolian beef and chow mein. They  tasted fairly decent, both dishes arrived cold, as if they had been reheated or left sitting out for a while. This was quite a letdown considering the hype surrounding this place. The hot and sour soup was just alright, nothing really good about it. Most of the food looked sad. Customer service was okay but nothing to brag about. For a place that is so highly praised, I expected a more efficient and attentive service. The overall experience did not live up to the reviews I had read. It's a beautiful restaurant with a huge fire place in the center of a great room. The service is fast and the servers are sweet and friendly. The food is fresh and made to order. If you don't like spicy food be sure to order it mild as the wings and calamari were too spicy for my kids and specifically the Mongolian beef and Kung pao chicken. Food and ambiance were good! However, we experienced discrimination (racism) from our waitress. There were 4 of us. Me and my husband who was the only black person at the table. We were with my brother and his wife. We split the check. My bother paid for theirs and my husband paid for ours. Great for a special occasions, large groups, or a date night. 4 stars for service - overeager to clear table, came for times to take the order when half the party was there, tried to rush putting in food order with the drink order. Efficient yes, refilled water many times, but needs to feel less rushed. 4 stars for portion size. You will leave full and with left overs. 5 stars for cocktails (**highly recommend the LYCHEE MARTINI**) 3 star for quality of dishes. The vegetarian chow mein and mongolian beef was slightly better than mediocre when compared to similar upscale PF Chang's and Frank Fat's. 3 star for location in casino. If you park in the parking structure, the restaurant is in the opposite end of the casino and you half to walk quite a while through very smoky areas. New to the area, we hadn't been to or heard much about Thunder Valley. We were looking for Chinese food and were interested in Red Lantern because of the positive reviews. Sadly, to get to the restaurant from the parking garage, you must walk through the entire casino. It is smoke-filled and noisy. There is no smoking in the restaurant, but it is open to the casino and smells horrible. Everything I wore had to be washed, including my hair. We recently returned to the Red Lantern in Thunder Valley Casino. It was our dinner destination the other evening while entertaining some family members over the holidays. This was a good experience for us, enjoying our food and doing a little gambling afterwards. If you have not been, the atmosphere in the Red Lantern is marvelous. Open, spacious and beautifully appointed with nice pieces of art. This is certainly not your typical Chinese restaurant in terms of décor. I started with a Whistle Pig Rye Whiskey (neat) .... Always satisfying. Our dinner order consisted of Lettuce Wraps, Calamari, Shrimp Pad Thai, Beef with Asparagus, Honey Glazed Walnut Prawns, and Orange Chicken. The House Lettuce Wraps included minced chicken, water chestnuts, mushroom, mint, and toasted pine nuts and, of course, fresh romaine lettuce (the filling had great flavor). Our Salt and Pepper Calamari consisted of tender and crispy "fried calamari'. The Shrimp Pad Thai was a stir-fried rice noodle dish with shrimp, egg, bean sprouts, onion and scallions in a Pad Thai fish sauce and peanuts. Not bad, but my least favorite. The Beef with Asparagus in Black Bean Sauce was stir-fried, tender sliced beef flank steak, asparagus, carrot, onion, and ginger in a black bean sauce (one of my absolute favorites). The very best, in my opinion, was the Honey Glazed Walnut Prawns. This was crispy fried prawns in lightly sweet mayonnaise sauce with candied walnuts. The candied walnuts are perfect as are the shrimp. Another super delicious dish was the Sweet and Sour Chicken. This included breaded tender chicken breast, pineapple, onion, and bell pepper in a sweet and sour sauce. You will not go wrong by ordering this meal. While service was only "mediocre", prices are competitive for what you get. read more

Inside Thunder Valley. Besides their steakhouse I do enjoy using my benefits here. The food tastes great and it's a great way to enjoy dinner before or after a few games on the Buffalo slot machines. We were so hungry, I forgot to take pictures of the food... The best things here are the great friendly staff, the crab maw soup, stir fry sticky rice and empress chicken. Big let down. Was excited to try this place as I heard good things. However.....!!!! The food was VERY bland and lacked any flavor at all. The Bbq pork tasted like an overcooked unseasoned pork chop. The fried rice was mushy and flavorless as well. We ended up getting 2 kinds of rice (bbq pork and seafood) but both were nasty. The $65 Sea Bass looked amazing however was very mushy in the center and on the bottom. Definitely a huge disappointment and we won't be back.
