While this is an awesome short order burger, let's keep it in perspective when comparing to +$12 premium sirloin and short rib blends. - The fries aren't "reheated". I see the same complaints about Harold's. It's called double frying. The fresh cut fries are intentionally dropped twice. (I admit they occasionally skip this step when the line is out the door filled with hungry boozy patrons, lol.) - If you're enjoying a wild night out on the town and then decide to break your organic-gluten-free-vegetarian diet at 3am with a deliciously greasy bag of umptuousness. .. your tummy might not like you anymore. It DOES NOT mean you have food poisoning. That's a very specific illness cause by bacteria. Sometimes certain foods just don't agree with your body, especially greasy food on the late night. I hate to even mention that term in a review, but food poisoning is wildly overused on Yelp. Just like "hidden gem" OR "I really wanted to like this place, but. .." OR "this is better than Au Cheval" OR "I wish I could give this place zero stars". Phew, now that I got that off my chest. .. As far as short-order burgers go, this is my favorite. The fries are pretty good too. I think they may be fried in beef tallow. Splurge and pay the 50 cents for an extra slice of cheese. The number of hotdog stands that also offer shrimp in Chicago has always been strange to me, but these are solid. **Hotdogs and polishes are mediocre despite Red Hot being the namesake.** Go only for the cheeseburgers. Simple. Cheap. Greasy. Delicious. There's not much more to say about Red Hot Ranch. This has become a recent go-to for late night, drunk food for me and it's so good I've even eat there sober. I love how focused they are. You know their food is good when you can count the total menu items on your hands. There's no where to sit except some picnic tables outside, and they are cash only. No frills, just all about the food. I love that the burgers are smashed, providing that wonderful, crunchy edge and juicy center. They have one of the best snaps to them in the casing I've ever seen, but they aren't Vienna, a bit small & sad and the flavor just isn't as good as the usual all beef dogs at other joints. Red Hot Ranch is a cash only, no frills, late night fast food joint located right near the McDonalds at Western/Milwaukee/Armitage. There is an ATM located inside. I walked in around 5:30pm and there wasn't a line. I ordered the Red Hot Ranch Double Burger and Fries, which was $7 after tax. It took them about 5 mins to make my order so very fast! This was probably the best $7 I have ever spent! The burger was crispy like a smash burger, toppings were fresh, and the cheese was melted to perfection. The fries were very very good as well and they gave you a ton of them! Yes, I can confirm that Red Hot Ranch has one of the best burgers in Chicago! Came around 11 pm for some late night drunchies. Probably the best time to enjoy this spot. Cash only but there is an ATM inside. Food (9/10): Every order comes with fries. You will end up with a mountain of them. The fries are more of the soft kind with no crisp. I'd suggest buying some extra sauce on the side. Maybe it was the drunchies but the Chicago dog I ordered really hit the spot. Better than portillos for sure. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by making this comparison. The red hot ranch burger with cheese was decent as well but not as good as the Chicago dog imo. Their fries remind me of Jimmy's hot dogs which is way out west, and it's a lot safer in this neighborhood. Always get my fries with a side of cheese.. service is no longer than 6 minutes. In my personal opinion, it is rather difficult for a place to really do fries well. Often they are soggy, undercooked, overcooked, or the salt is all messed up. Now I'm not going to say that these are the best fries in Chicago, but these are up there with the best of 'em. And the shrimp: very, very good. Red Hot Ranch (RHR) is famous for their $7.25 double cheese burger meal which includes two flavorful beef patties smashed to crispy perfection, lettuce, onion, mayo, and special sauce. The fries are fresh cut, delicious, and crispy. Fountain drinks are $2.25, and ear plugs are free if you are sensitive to the noise of the CTA blue line that passes directly above the shop. The CTA line presents a vibe of its own, especially considering that the outside seating is byob/420 friendly. There is a counter for indoor eating during the cold weather season. RHR isn't quite on the same level as my other favorite Chicago burger spots like Au Cheval, Gretel, or the Loyalist; however, it's not as expensive either so I frequent RHR a lot more often. If you want to treat yourself with a great burger without spending the $100 that you would at the aforementioned burger spots, then I highly recommend checking out the Red Hot Ranch. read more

I have always tipped, been polite, and not mentioned the mistakes until today. When I called in and explained the errors, I was told that I could come in for a replacement, which is what I expected. I ordered the Red Hot Ranch double cheeseburger with fries. It was two very thin patties that were cooked to a char combined with raw onions, full leaf lettuce, and a special sauce. (I don't like tomatoes so I left that out.) all on a soft bun. The burger was mistakenly served to me without the cheese so I can't really comment on that part of the meal. But anyway, the burger was pretty bland. Red Hot Ranch must be short on the special sauce because there was very little on the burger which left it being quite dry. The fries tasted fresh but were a small portion. I'm giving the place a 3 outta 5. I did eat the whole thing so there's that buuuut I don't know... I gave Red Hot Ranch the rating I did because in my humble opinion they have the best fried shrimp in the city!!!! I often speak of my southern heritage and the creole and cajun, soul food cuisine that I've often made and seen made by my people. ( family friends who are also from the deep south). So what makes these fried shrimp the best? They are cooked to perfection, a golden brown, they're meaty and not breaded very heavily. I think they are 16/20 or maybe a tad smaller but for the price, which is $19, they're excellent. Trust me. This is a small hole in the wall that stays open until 5am on Friday and Saturday nights. It's the perfect place to go to get over all those drinks you had at the club. I've never had a burger or hot dog from here because the shrimp was the show stopper for me. Now looky here I'm telling ya the shrimps is the bomb!!! P.s Lawrence street fish house, the Fish Keg, and Goose Island this place beats them all hands down... the only negative is the shrimp sauce could use some work!
