We had two midcentury modern chairs that were my husband's beloved uncle's. We had had them reupholstered about 25 years ago but it wasn't done very well and the brown velvet was looking pretty sad. We looked to buy new chairs but ultimately, we couldn't say goodbye to these beauties so decided to invest in getting them reupholstered again. We got a few bids (all in the general price range) and decided to go with Edwin, who had a better turn around time. Having my sofa reupholstered by Edwin and team was the best decision I've ever made with regards to furniture. We have a high quality Italian made sofa that a cat used as a scratching post years ago, it was comfortable and had good bones but was truly depressing to look at. These guys exceeded my expectations across the board. Originally, when I visited them in Richmond, I was surprised to find them working out of storage units--but when I saw their office and how they operated, it was brilliant--allowing them to offer the best selection of fabrics and cushions available and work very quickly. They turned around our furniture quicker than they expected and exceeded on every angle--even surprising us with custom pillows and delivering ahead of schedule. The sofa was very long and had to be moved up 6 flights of stairs--but they were able to reconfigure the arms using bolts--and recreated the bottom so the entirety of the sofa could be deconstructed and reconstructed. It was amazing. It's a better sofa than it's ever been--and is now built to be able to be reconstructed and reupholstered again... should it ever be required. But I doubt it. This fabric is not only gorgeous, but durable. All of the information about their fabric selections is available and clear. They are kind, easy to communicate with, and have an OUTSTANDING sense of style. The single cushion on the Green Sofa? That was their idea. It was always two--and someone was always stuck in the middle. NO MORE. And that was their idea. Whatever furniture you have--whatever the age--take it to them. I choose Red Door Upholstery because of its excellent reviews here. They were right! Edwin is awesome. He gets back with you in a timely manner and never makes you feel like you're bothering him. He didn't rush us when we were picking out our material, even though it was close to closing time. He kept us updated when our material came in, when the staining was done, etc. He doesn't usually do this, but we couldn't pick up our chairs the day they were done, so he brought them to us because he had an appointment in our area. When we inspected the chairs, there were a couple minor issues, but Edwin was so gracious and took one of the chairs back to fix the issue. He made a second house call the fix the other. He did an amazing job. He had to recreate two pieces for one of the chairs. He did such a good job that I can't tell you which piece he made and which one came with the chair. I sent some photographs of the furniture that needed help and he promptly responded with a quote. I approved the quote and dropped my furniture off at his warehouse. He met me to discuss the refinishing and reupholstering of a few cherished pieces. He was attentive and listened to what I wanted. I chose a leather to breathe new life into old antique chairs. I had been agonizing over the anticipated cost of getting 3 of my grandmother's large arm chairs reupholstered for a long time. But, with so much time at home this spring, looking at those sad chairs everyday/all day made me finally do it. I found Edwin via Yelp, met him at his upholstery space with masks on, and he walked me through the process in a friendly and easy manner, while also social distancing for safety. He even showed my 5-year old son a bit about his special tools, which was really neat. For 2 of the chairs, I already had the grey fabric, but Edwin suggested a fantastic new detail to use leather for the piping. I liked the idea but was a bit nervous and came to see the chairs mid-way through. Edwin reassured me that I was going to love the finished work, and WOW, do I ever! The chairs look absolutely amazing with the mixed fabrics and leather piping-- very hip, on-trend, and still plenty classy and sophisticated enough to stand the test of time. For these same 2 chairs, I also had a special request that really challenged Edwin-- I wanted them to be raised up on mid-century modern style legs and to be able to still spin 360 degrees. Edwin had to completely rebuild the underside of the chairs to accomplish this feat, and I'm sure it wasn't easy. I don't think he'd ever done this before as the request was really unusual, but he accomplished it masterfully. The 2 chairs are actually structurally fairly different underneath, so he had to adjust his approach each time. The result was exactly what I hoped. I love these chairs so much now---THANK YOU EDWIN. For the 3rd chair, because it was leather, I initially wanted to minimize cost so only asked Edwin to recover the seat cushion and ottoman which had the most damage. He warned me that it might not look right, but helped me find a similar leather to try to match the rest of the chair, and obliged my request. He ended up being right about the miss-match, and ultimately, I asked him to order another leather hide and recover the entire chair to make sure it all matched. He delivered the result today, and it's so lovely, comfortable, and professionally done; his attention to detail and skill is worth every penny. I will definitely use Edwin for any future upholstery projects. It was such a pleasure to work with him. read more

We inherited a mid century couch from a friend and two armchairs (plus an ottoman) from my grandparents. We loved the style but the (original!) cushions were increasingly uncomfortable and shabby. I wanted to bring new life to these vintage pieces but was intimidated by the work involved - chosing someone to do the work, selecting fabric and materials. And the expense. I had a custom sofa and chair -- in the style of the pieces from the 1930s -- upholstered and basically rebuilt by Edwin. He is an absolute MASTER CRAFTSMAN unlike any other I have encountered over the years. His attention to detail was astounding. The downside is the price. I had a written estimate, received online, which I agreed to with confidence based on the reviews and photos of work he had done. However as the work progressed, the price continually increased to the point of preposterousness. I paid 3 times the price I had originally paid to have the furniture built in the first place. But remember the adage, "You get what you pay for." However, the final result was so magnificent that I don't regret having employed him. After reading Red Door Upholstery reviews on Yelp, I phoned re my tufted bench sofa cushion, which was too soft and needed replacing. I was delighted with Edwin's prompt response. He requested I email photos of the sofa. After review he scheduled an in-home consultation and arrived exactly on time carrying a stack of foam samples for me to sit on. I chose the highest density foam, yet felt I needed more support due to chronic back pain. I described the comfortable seats in my MD's office and how firm they were. Edwin listened, had me sit on the mid century style sofa and observed my posture. In less than a week, he delivered the sofa which looked better than new and was now ergonomically correct. Edwin is a creative genius! He built a wood frame inside the bench seat with cross bars for maximum support and filled the frame with the highest density foam angled to provide maximum support and correct posture. He also reinforced the sofa back so it provides maximum support. He noted the seam on the sofa back was stretched and reinforced it with perfectly matched cording. My back feels much better and the sofa looks better than new. Results exceeded all expectations. Edwin is AMAZING. He refinished a dining table and reupholstered and refinished the chairs for us and it looks absolutely fantastic. He is professional, he is kind, and he finishes projects when he says he will. Edwin in very nice, but they did a horrible job reupholstering my loveseat. I couldn't even speak about it for months, it is that bad. It is so upsetting that I spent that amount of money on such a bad job. They took a chunk out of the back of the loveseat while delivering it, then Edwin found a red pen to try and cover it up, making worse. Edwin didn't even offer to take money off for the damage, just offered to come by with a different color pen if I decided I didn't want to just hide it against a wall! I was in complete shock. They didn't cover the foam with batting, I can tell because I can feel and almost see the edge of the foam they used. I picked a firm seat thinking it would be covered in batting, but no. My bad for assuming a cushion would be covered like a cushion. The thing creaks when you sit or move on it. I can see where other parts of the hard brown exterior were damaged when taking off the old upholstery. I spent $6k on this crap. There is no pen that can fix this mess and Edwin's fast talking can't fix it either. I would not trust the other reviews if I were you, sorry. read more

We decided to use the services of Red Door Upholstery after looking at reviews of theirs and other businesses. They were rated very highly so we went with them. From the start, they responded quickly to my initial outreach, provided some general info, then followed up with the specifics as to how they could reupholster the seats of our island chairs. We met with Edwin who showed us an array of materials to choose from, as well as the price ranges for both the material and the labor. We left them the seats and they indicated they'd be done within a month. Less than 4 weeks later, Edwin contacted me indicating our seats were completed. I picked up our seats a few days later. We are SO in love with our new seats! New pads were also used which add to the luxuriousness of our new sitting experience. Here are some pictures. The seats are extremely comfortable.
