I have no idea how this place has less then 4 star reviews. My experience was exceptional! Sat outside on a hot day. Wonderful patio. Big red umbrellas, lots of room. Picnic table and grassy area where you can take off your shoes if you want, and toss a bean bag. Awesome. Our waitress was great. Very bubbly but not the fake kind of happy. Geuinely happy to help. Attentive to boot. My tea glass was never empty. The pretzel and cheese app was seductive. I'm not kidding. Whatever was in that cheesy mason jar was out to take someone home. I only wish we had more pretzels. I ordered a black bean burger. Massive. Seriously it was like an inch thick! Sooo flavorful. Topped with microgreens and avocado . Mmm. This is something you need in your life. Don't give me that crap that you don't eat burgers that aren't beef. Shut it. Try this! So much flavor in the beens and a good char. If you really can't do a bean burger there are many other yummy choices. We were lucky enough to get here for the lunch menu. I wanted to eat here but my assigned server didn't have any available tables on the patio in the shade. (There were four empty tables in the shade.) those tables, I was told, were assigned to a different server... you read that right. LMAO! In the +90° weather, I looked at the hostess in disbelief, and for a second I thought I could see her working out in her head what she had just said. But, then it was gone, so I said thank you no thank you and walked out. Full disclosure, when the manager found out about the experience I had he was as dismayed as I was and offered to make it right. So the two out of five stars are earned entirely by him. read more

Amazing service and great food options! I was able to make the beet salad the way I wanted it. No fuss no extra charge. The pretzel appetizer with pimento cheese was just the right combination to start. My companion had the vanilla milkshake and it was so good it was gone in a flash. I'd go back! Duck confit tater tots has a bunch of great flavors, but not in combination. We loved it, eating each part separately. Man bear pig burger was delicious but the patty itself had no seasoning. Definitely a knife and fork burger. Truffle fries were covered with rosemary. Why does everyone think those two flavors go together? Prawns were perfectly cooked and delicious but the crunchy bruschetta and flavorless arugula just didn't belong. Bread pudding was good but served cold with a nice caramel sauce. I think it would be better warm. With whipped cream on the side. The space could be attractive but the floor was filthy- we stepped on food everywhere. It was 1:30, so well into brunch and only a few tables were filled. This mediocre establishment has the worse customer service. Always has had and cannot seem to figure it out. We gave it one additional try last night and again left because of idiotic ridiculous service. Took out group to DuEduardos and gladly spent our $1000.00. We were treated so great there and enjoyed a far better menu, drinks and nice staff. Pretty decent food! We were pleased with our visit here - I got the chicken with fresh bell peppers, quinoa and artichoke hearts. Really fresh and light. Perfect for summer! My husband got the rib eye - Which I wasn't really impressed with (too overdone and lacking flavor) - but he liked it. We also got the smoked chicken wings and that was probably my favorite part. Well seasoned, nicely smoky flavor and perfectly crispy skin. I'm giving it four stars because the service wasn't anything amazing and sitting on the patio was a little annoying because the umbrellas kept twirling around and moving (it was a windy day). read more

I've been here 10 times too many. Most employees per customers per ratio than a ride operator vs rider at Cedar Point. Piss poor service. Utter neglect of customer needs and requests. Food quality is in the gutter. Unkempt. Outside seating is pitch black, not ambient. Chairs are tattered and bathroom dirty. Perhaps to continue this standard they need to continue to forgo service and quality and just hire more pointless employees. read more

We ate at Red Crown last night -first time for my husband and it had been awhile for me. Drinks were awesome. Food very average. He had the bbq which was tasty and cooked well. I had the French onion soup which was basically a pile of onions with a little juice and some bread on top. I also had the Mac and cheese with pulled pork. It was essentially buttered noodles with a pile of dry meat on top-just sad. To their credit when I nicely explained that it wasn't what I had been hoping for, they removed it from the bill. Still I'd rather pay the money and have a great meal. Our waitress was decent although seemed annoyed that she had to wait on us and was hoping we'd hurry up and leave which we did. read more

This is a smaller restaurant in a former gas station. They did a great job repurposing the building, and even kept some of the old signage. The noise ll ever is surprisingly low considering the hard, brick walls and high ceilings. The service is fast and professional. We were in a party of 16, which they gladly accommodated. Seated on the perfect corner of Grosse Pointe Parks sits this renovated oil shop with some awesome original decor. Yes, they need more vegetarian and vegan food. But other than that, their handcrafted and perfectly seasoned foods are delicious. You feel instantly calm when you're here with the low hanging lights and lots of natural window lighting. It's warm, cozy, and charming. You get crayons to draw on your butcher paper table covering too! Today we did mimosas (big, fresh, and delicious btw!) And some black bean burgers which are massive. The small details like the pea shoot tendrils and unique seasoning on tater tots make this place above par. Vary the menu more and it would be a regular hangout. I have been to Red Crown a good amount of times, being that I live in the area. I have never had a bad experience until this past Sunday when I went for brunch. It was a beautiful day, and a couple of my friends and I decided to sit on the patio. Our waitress was very nice, but seemingly completely forgot that we existed. One of the main reasons we decided to go to Red Crown was for their bottomless mimosas. However, it was pretty much pointless to even order them because our waitress NEVER came to check on us or fill up our glasses. We definitely did NOT get our money's worth. Two out of the three of us ordered the Red Crown Benedict. Every single "poached" egg was cooked all the way through. Already disappointed, we asked a different waiter to fetch our waitress. We waited another 20 minutes before she showed up. We wanted to wait and ask for new poached eggs, but our food was cold by the time our waitress came to check on us. When we asked for our checks, we waited yet ANOTHER 20 minutes for those. We left very angry and unsatisfied. The food's taste was as decent as it could be when cold, but the quality of food and service was just not there. read more

I went here with my friend Judy. I thought brunch was also on Saturday, so we were there 30 minutes before they opened. Brunch is only Sundays. Oops! Once they were open, we were greeted with a smile and sat by the window. My friend had the Mac and Cheese with pulled pork and I had the burger and fries. Both were delicious! Cool little place that used to be a service station years ago. The building sat empty for a while until it was turned into a restaurant. Ordered the beef brisket. It was tasty, but the meat was tough and the portion was small. The greens and brussels sprouts were good however. The dinner came with two small pieces of corn bread which were dry and tasteless. I have eaten at Red Crown on a couple of occasions and I wanted to wait until I tried a few of their items before I commented. First, I love the fact that it is part of the neighborhood. It blends in and is not overdone. The decor is very cool and I like that the bar area is set off from the dining area. If you want a quick bite at the bar, you can get it and if you want to sit down with a friend or a group, you are covered as well. The wait staff is attentive. I think that there may be too much "staying in your own lane" which can be overcome. For example, the hostess may come by and ask if everything is OK, if you say you need more "tarter sauce" for example, she will send over the wait staff, rather than getting it him/herself (which s/he may not be able to do, legally) or just telling the wait staff person who would then bring it. But this is a very minor thing. Overall the staff is attentive and timely. I love the food combinations. It's good American Bistro type of food. Plus they are not afraid of beef or pork, including my beloved BACON! The drinks are good and they are not chintzy on the alcohol. The desserts are decadent and I love the fact that they offer hummers (alcoholic shakes) for the adults. This is great for the summer when you are hot and want something fun! The food presentation is great! On one trip, I had the Salmon Benedict meal and it was delicious. I dream about going back, just for that! On another occasion, I had the chili with brisket. It was meaty and very flavorful! On a healthy front, I like that they had a lot of healthy choices that were not bland, but were exciting and innovative in presentation. I lusted after Mike's cutting board which consisted of the steak of the day on a wood plank served with grilled carrots, vegetables and sauteed mushrooms. The presentation was great! I was told to check this little place out by some friends when I was visiting Detroit. It was super easy to find, & the staff was incredibly nice. But the FOOD!!! Easily one of the best burgers I have ever had, and I was suspicious when they recommend chips on the side (I thought it was going to come with a bag of chips like a cafeteria), but they bake their own potato chips in house! We'd eaten here a year or so ago, & thought 'certainly worth another visit'. Not this time, and here's a caveat: with COVID cutting a massive 'out of service' swath through the restaurant sector, we were really looking forward to dining out (so they started with a happy customer). We had the 'beacons field' (burger w/brisket, cheese &onions) and a chicken & waffle. They were both OK - the burger was supposed to be 'medium well' & came out on the 'well' side - medium having been left behind several minutes prior to departing the grill: ZERO pink - leathery-look & consistency, but these things happen - I wouldn't write-off an entire dining experience over this. We ate in the tent, where there were several propane heaters, but they only turned them on (one at a time) if customers were seated right next to them, so with ANY breeze coming through the tent - whose sides were pulled open - it was cold. I heard the server tell someone they drop the tent's sides "if it got windy". Now while it was unseasonably mild for January - maybe 40-43 with mild breeze, if you're serving meals, that's NOT the "Don't bother with heaters & tent flaps" zone. Please - a little common sense! Tables were maybe 25% occupied, but the service dreadfully slow. Young server - pleasant but a bit disconnected. He went through the wine list briefly, promoting their half off wine offer, & enthusiastically endorsed their mulled wine ($12/glass). I had a beer, & was a little surprised at the eventual $50 bill - thinking 'oh, he forgot to do the half off the mulled wine'. When we noted this, he told us the mulled wine wasn't included - it was on the 'cocktail' rather than the 'wine' list which - upon review - was correct, but HÉ was the one recommending it when we asked for a recommendation from the wine list, then from him to say 'Oh well, it's not actually ON the wine list - it's on the cocktail list . . . Then we waited interminably for the server to reappear w/our credit card. So where did Red Crown fail? Well, on several levels: the food was above the "meh" level, but "Come eat here for a slightly above 'meh' culinary experience is not exactly a Don Draper-inspired advertising strategy. Letting a customer sit in a substantially colder environment than necessary, with 'below expectations' speed of service is just lousy execution. For crying out loud, if you've invested in a substantial tent & heaters, use them - they're NOT decor, & get customers in & out: maybe a leisure seating at the cafe in 42 degree overcast breezy weather is the norm in Skarsfjord, Norway, but this isn't Skarsfjord. Then when your server leaves the impression that a beverage is going to be $6 and you charge $12, & your reaction to this is essentially 'too bad for you', capping off a thoroughly below expectations customer experience, guess what - that customer isn't coming back, nor will he encourage anyone else to do so. It's a challenging enough environment for the restaurant sector - when you operate your business on a 'whatever - who cares?' basis, you must not have a serious desire to stay in business. read more

Just terrible. Went on a Friday night because there was no wait. The food was awful. I had the white fish sandwich. Very hard to ruin a fried fish sandwich, but they knew how. The bun was stale, the fish had unpleasant odor, and the breading on the fish (looked to be twice fried) fell off. Also ordered a side of sweet potato fries which came cold. It's a nice spot in the Cabbage Patch area of the Park. It's a renovated old gas station which makes it very cool. There's a separate bar area, indoor and outdoor dining with heaters for cool days and nights. Relatively small and intimate but can accommodate a nice size crowd. Food is great and has a nice spin on old favorites, service is solid but I find their menu limited and tend not to go back as often as I might otherwise. Mostly because I'm not a barbecue sauce fan and don't eat pork. So there's not much left that's interesting and I can get a burger anywhere. Husband and kids really like it though. read more

We came in 10 minutes before the kitchen closed. I was expecting cold and semi-gross food. I ordered the macaroni and cheese with bacon lardons and my friend ordered the pulled pork with cowboy beans and asparagus. My macaroni and cheese was fantastic, the pasta was al dente, the cheese tasted like cheese (not easy, even with the best) and the bacon lardons were phenomenal. The pulled pork and cowboy beans were tasty but that grilled asparagus was killer. All in all a delicious meal. I've been here a few times so I thought I'd give it a couple visits before posting. First off the pros - the staff is attentive and the decor is cool with a nice outdoor dining area. They also have a decent beer and drink list. Now the cons - The food is terrible. Each time I've been here the food has been ok but this time will be the last time I go here. My husband ordered a burger medium, it was very well done. I ordered the mac and cheese - because IMO even bad mac and cheese is good but NOPE. The Pasta was barely cooked and the cheese sauce was bland. After spending nearly $80 on two entrees, two beers and an appetizer I was expecting a lot more. I was tempted to give it a 3, but if that = "A-OK" then no way. First thing, as small as this place is it does not require two hostesses. Right off the bat two parties behind me were seated ahead because the hostessessesses we're not communicating. One, and only one hostess should direct all incoming guests, maybe one assisting, but they cannot just share the duties, wandering around, not keeping order (even with their iPad). It is very nice inside, it's a cool old fashioned service station that has been renovated into a pretty classy little joint. That's about where the good stuff ended. Water is served from warm bottle at your table, but fortunately a glass of ice we requested only took about 20 minutes to arrive. No breads or anything else to make up for the 20 minute wait just to take drinks, another 20 minutes later those arrived..almost..a keg broke so then I had to wait almost 30 minutes for now a bottled beer. They were understaffed so the poor server was doing her best but still would disappear for literally half an hour at a time. So about an hour after seating our food arrived. Meatloaf dinner was good, perch sandwich good, shrimp and grits...good. Nothing at all spectacular to warrant all I've heard before, maybe we picked the wrong ones. I hesitated on the BBQ menu considering other reviews. Second round of drinks never came, I got comped a beer. Bottom line is this place has great potential to be a solid long term GP restaurant but it will not survive with such a total breakdown between hostesses, servers, bar, and kitchen on a simple weeknight. I came here for my birthday, and being a Grosse Pointer, I had high hopes for the place. Our waitress was very nice, but the food was plain disgusting! The ribs were dried out and did not fall off the bone. Even the waitress told us that they did not look appetizing and that this happens quite a bit with their ribs! Wait a minute, IS THIS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THEIR SPECIALITY!!!??? I was very disappointed with my meal. If they don't fix their recipes, I'm afraid that this place will be just another car garage again! I wish them the best of luck, but I will never return. read more

Going to Red Crown was a very unique experience, and hard to rate. There are so many terrific things about it, and really only one negative. Unfortunately, that negative is the food. First of all, as the other reviews mention, the decor is fantastic. It is very cool to eat a meal inside the garage of the old Standard Oil station. The outdoor tables are fantastic as well. Our server was attentive, funny, and made great suggestions. The specialty cocktails were fun, and original. The deserts were delicious. The food however, left much to be desired. The chicken wings were bland, and almost meatless (entirely bone), and the trout was unfortunately bland as well. The pitmaster general was better - the brisket was very tasty, but still the pork shoulder was dry, as were the ribs. The portions were not particularly large either. Since Red Crown is new, I'm sure we'll give it another go in a few months - hopefully then the main courses will have caught up with the rest of the positive things they have going. read more

"Nothing here to bring me back." ATMOSPHERE: Sometimes an old gas station, no matter how much red paint you put on it, still feels like a gas station. Music was being played from an iPod connected to speakers... 3/5 stars. PRICE: My $13 hamburger just could not be justified by what came on the plate. I am so torn about this place. I love the food, the atmosphere, the drinks, and the location--but every single time I come here, I get less-than-stellar service. I worked in the restaurant industry for over 10 years and I am MORE than understanding in most scenarios--but to have a server ignore you for 15 minutes, roll their eyes when you ask for another beer, or completely forget about you isn't great. Not trying to be too harsh--I really do like this place--my fondness comes from the place, the food, and the company with which I share it--not the service I've received here. We were here at 1:30pm on a Friday, party of 6 and the patio by my surprise was pretty crowded but we all got sat pretty quickly. They have this little area next to the outside tables were you can play ping pong or corn hole games. Service was very slow today according to one of my friends but she said it wasn't normal for them so I figured I wouldn't hold it against them since she goes there all the time. We all ordered a few Handcrafted Drinks that were pretty good everyone really enjoyed theirs. For my meal I ordered a salad called Cornbread Panzanella with smoked chicken added. The salad had in it peaches, green beans, country ham, red onion, frisee and a aged vinaigrette on top and like I said I also added as a extra smoked chicken on top. The salad was really good and I would order it again but also I'm glad I ordered the smoked chicken to go on top otherwise the salad might not have been as filling, I felt like it need more stuff in it or at least more frisee. The inside of the restaurant looked really nice, and the bar area very cool. I saw they had posted about Happy Hour Tuesday-Friday 4-6pm, tap wine & beer-well drinks $1off. I spotted a poster about "Sunday Supper Special" every Sunday from 4-9pm which you get a 3 courses family style meal for one price, adults $22 and kids 11 & under $12, and they post the menu for that Sunday ahead of time. Other signs I saw around the restaurant was Wednesdays they have Live Music and Sunday Night is "Industry Night" and so guests in the restaurant industry get 25% off. I've been here several times and always forget to check in. What I love about this place, is it's proximity to my house and the layout is pretty cool. One review I read said it lacked atmosphere. To me, nothing really stood out one way or a other so I am probably not the most qualified to address this. (Basically - I like it. I'm all about the company in with anyway.) The food: the wings are my favorite because they're smoked and flavourful. I also slather them with Tabasco sauce since their sauce doesn't do much for me. Brunch with my dad yesterday = smoked salmon eggs Benedict - very good. Simple. And came out quickly (which was actually a pleasant surprise to both of us) He got the chicken apple salad. Looking at it, I felt it was incredibly lack luster and I would rate it a 2/5. (My mimosa was fantastic!) The service: for some reason, every time I've been here and a few people I know from the area agree, it feels as though the staff would really rather be somewhere else. I travel a lot for work and one thing that always gets me about the service industry is the general lack of enthusiasm some people have for doing their job. You're not just a food handler. In my opinion, servers are there as an extension of the management who (hopefully) really wants everyone to have an awesome time. Just my two cents. read more

They have great taste- not Breaded, not fried either. The dipping sauce was odd...I didn't get it. The wings were better not even dipped in a sauce. I had the apple smoked Gouda chicken salad. Very good and light- I added goat cheese on my own to round out the flavor. Delicious. My wife had the beef brisket sandwich with fries. The brisket had a nice cook on it. Nice BBQ sauce too. Overall my wife said the sandwich was a 3, but wouldn't order it again. They have a nice selection of wine and michigan crafted beers. I had a Humpa-lumpa IPA. Delicious. First of all, amazing service!. From the moment you walk in the fabulous host makes you so welcome as if he's been waiting for you all day. The food is awesome! Whatever you're in the mood for there is something for you. The patio is so peaceful and the service is quick. If by chance a dish comes out wrong they immediately fix it without questions.
