Summary: All in all, we had a good time and I wouldn't refuse to go back, but neither the experience nor the meal made me want to come back either. I'd go with a group ready to have a few drinks before the meal, to mitigate the wait, try a different entree and make sure I got another piece of cornbread.
My daughter (9) and I went on Tuesday, March 19th. We got there about 7:30 and the place was packed. The hostesses (there were 2) were very polite and pleasant. We waited about 20 minutes for a table, as they predicted, which we were prepared for, having read the reviews of the place on here. The hostesses did a good job funneling couples and small parties without children to the bar when an opening appeared there, the bar was also packed, so there were almost never more than 2 parties waiting while we were there. We got a table between a walkway and a wall, which I liked because I didn't feel like we were eating on top of another group. The majority of the other tables appeared very close to each other, as other reviews have said, but the other patrons didn't seem to be having any problems. At the beginning of our meal it was a bit loud but it grew pretty quiet as the night wore on. The volume might actually help separate the tables; you don't have to shout but I don't imagine there is much listening in on other tables going on.
Unfortunately, our meal wasn't particularly noteworthy aside from the cornbread that happened to come with my order. I'm no foodie and I don't even particularly like cornbread (my daughter does, I usually give her mine) but this cornbread was unbelievably good. It managed a crisp outside that gave it a nice sensation to bite into, while also being smooth and melting in your mouth rather than crumbling apart. I smeared their honey butter on top of it and the taste was worth the wait. I say "worth the wait" because unfortunately it came extremely late. We ordered almost our entire meal all at once (drinks, appetizer, entree) and the cornbread came after we had finished the meals and were considering desert.
My daughter got a simple burger and fries and the fries also came out a short time after the burger, though they were well made and tasted good/fine. I don't know what type of bun was on her burger but it was tough enough that I had trouble cutting the burger in half, and even wondered if the knife was dull until she complained about it being hard to bite through and chew. We ordered onion rings as an appetizer and the breading tasted good but half of the rings simply fell apart when you touched them, making them inconvenient to eat. They came in two small stacks on a plate with a dipping sauce and the two stack were visibly different enough (and physically different enough, one stack falling apart on touch, one with breading much more firm) that I wondered if we had gotten the end of one batch and the beginning of another. I ordered the hot sausage links with mashed potatoes and gravy and braised greens. Pleasantly, the greens were delicious, as were the potatoes with mushroom gravy. Sadly, the sausage was bland. It didn't seem to contain any form of a hot spice in the mixture and whatever spices were used the taste was unremarkable. It came with a "Carolina sauce," I believe it was called. A tangy semi-transparent yellow fluid in a cup that helped to add flavor to the bland sausage and sort of saved the dish, but I finished unsatisfied by the sausage all in all. Sidenote: I recently had a sausage at the Fort Street Brewery in Lincoln Park, which (their menu said) gets its sausage from a local maker and it was good enough that I ordered a second, but I digress. For desert (back at Red Crown) we shared a piece of PB&J pie, which was quite good with a well balanced mixture of sweet but tart preserves and smooth rich peanut butter in a solid but soft piece of pie that stayed together well.
The meal took quite a while to arrive, at least 45 minutes, maybe longer. We were sat just before 8, we weren't eating until just before 9. It was long enough that the waitress stopped by, unprompted mind you, more than once to apologize for the wait and eventually promise that we were the next order up (this added to the ridiculous delay on the cornbread and the otherwise unremarkable wait for the fries, made the experience quite excessive time-wise). The wait wasn't terrible to endure however, thanks to white paper the restaurant places over the entire table, to protect the table cloth, and the crayons they place at every table (not just ones with kids, there is a wall ornament with more than a dozen large crayola boxes hanging on one of the walls). We spent our time filling it up with doodles, which my daughter liked so much that she took it home. I liked the red and white color theme of the interior and the glass garage doors made for a nice view and a unique touch. The sheer mass of the numerous close tables detracted from any novel feeling of eating somewhere out of the ordinary. read more
