Dumplings

Very cozy place off the beaten path. European food is made to order and delicious. The lady is an owner , the cook and the server in one. Truly enjoyed our experience there. Fairly interesting vegan and vegetarian options that my vegan friend also enjoyed. It is a bit pricey and it is not for the ones in a rush, but it is worth it.

Garlic toast and achocha.

It's unusual to find vegan European food but, amazingly, The Red Chateau has a dedicated vegan menu. We tried everything she (I say she because the owner is female and was serving us) had that was vegan except the soup and it was all delicious. The garlic bread is such a treat, earthy and crispy with obvious pieces of garlic on top. The goulash with spaetzle was everything you'd want, warm, hearty, flavourful, spicy and earthy. The vegan patties are made from shiitake mushrooms! The owner was also the server and it made for a lovely ambiance, very warm and inviting. The owner grows much of the produce herself, organically! The Apple strudel was good, could have used a little bit of cinnamon, IMHO, but other than that was very enjoyable. Her mulled red wine is the perfect drink for a cold Ontario evening. If The Red Chateau was open on Monday, we'd be back again for dinner. It was that good!

Interior view. Quaint, small, poorly lit. Feels like a 19th century tavern. The restaurant is itself housed in a building from 1850.

Who would have guessed that a Czech-Hungarian restaurant in Niagara Falls, Ontario would earn one of my coveted, rare five-star reviews? Red Chateau, housed in a building from 1850, is off the beaten path and a mile or so from the Niagara Falls tourist epicenter. It's on a dead-at-night commercial street. We came for the vegan options it proudly advertises. You don't see vegan-friendly Eastern European food often, so this was an unusual treat. We started with the vegan seeds rye sourdough garlic bread (C$11.50) which was great---fresh, from-scratch and with excellent crunch and flavor. Save some to dip in the stews of the main courses. The organic sauteed vegetables (C$29) was really tasty and simple---cooked vegetables with tons of herbs and spices and vegan Czech "dumplings" which were basically just pieces of bread, but with better texture and chew. Get this dish medium-hot or hot, as the owner will put her own garden-grown chili peppers into the dish. The Hungarian vegan goulash (C$30) has the texture of a hearty stew and, while not as flavorful as the sauteed vegetable dish, went perfectly with the garlic bread appetizer. Red Chateau has two vegan desserts---the mixed berry cake (C$12) and the apple strudel (C$12). We got both. The mixed berry cake is awesome---it comes to you freshly baked, with moistness, subdued sweetness and delicacy. The apple strudel is good, and not too sweet, but I found the pastry texture to be dough-y. The interior of the restaurant calls to mind a 19th century tavern; it's dimly lit, full of old furniture and quaint. The service is friendly, though the chef-owner is also the waitress. This was fine in our case, as we were the only diners for most of the evening, but I could see backups occurring if a lot of people came all at once. While Red Chateau is expensive, it's also one-of-a-kind, fresh and flavorful. I'm glad we went.

Intimate venue

What a hidden gem! The owner is chef, bartender AND server. It is a dining experience, not to be rushed. EVERYTHING is homemade and cooked to order. The venue is small and intimate, best for couples. We started with a a Mulberry Vodka and Raspberry Courvoisier, both delightful. You must try the garlic bread...the bread is thick and homemade. Also try the achocha salad, homegrown, homemade with vinegar and onions. Different and light. Must try the Cheese Triangles...not a ravioli, not a pierogi. A light cheese filling in the dumpling with a butter sauce. Really delicious. Entrees: my husband had the Gypsy Weiner Schnitzel and I had the Smoked Pork Potato Dumplings. Hands down, the best Weiner Schnitzel he's ever had. Cooked to perfection and the Gypsy style with a little kick made it extra special. The smoked meat in the dumplings would challenge the best pitmaster, and it was wrapped in a potato dumpling shell that was incredible. We got her handmade walnut crescent cookies to go because 1) we were stuffed! and 2) a group of loud tourists stumbled in with 2 screaming kids. The venue is small, suited best for couples. Suggest reservations. Not a place for children or large, loud groups. Please, keep them both in the loud, tacky tourist area and don't ruin the experience for others! PS, the cookies were also phenomenal. Save room for her homemade apple strudel and tell us what we missed!

Red Chateau is a Red "House" but so you know, it is less French in cuisine and more towards authentic Czech/Euro flavours done beautifully by Jarmila who is the owner, hostess, chef all-in-one. A wonderful friendly woman that made our experience excellent in this traditional vintage interior decor. We were the only ones on a cool Sunday December night which made it even more over the top romantic mood depending on how dim you ask the lights to be turned while a candle lights our home cooked meal by this culinary schooled Jarmila. We warmed up with some Mulled Wine($7.50/glass) Goulash Soup ($7.50)(Beef, Potatoes, Carrot in Red Paprika base with fresh Garlic and organic Herbs) - Delicious and unlike any Goulash I've ever had before and way better than my previous tragic attempt to make it. Drowned Sausage ($7.50 )(Marinated Sausage in Vinaigrette w/ Onion, Olive Oil, served w/Green Garnish, Housemade Rye Sourdough Bread) - This seemed less unique to me as a room temp Sausage with Vinaigrette. Rabbit ($32.95)(Braised Rabbit w/Root Vegetables, Cream Sauce accompanied by Czech Dumpling, Vegetable Garnish and organic Mulberries) - Presented very homestyle like any other dish we had. Jarmila will give you a plate so you can eat the Half Rabbit with your hands which makes it easier. Beef Stroganoff ($33.95)(Beef Tenderloin sauteed with Onion, White & Portabella Mushrooms, organic Pickles and organic Herbs, finished as Sour Cream Sauce with a touch of Lemon. Accompanied by Vegetable Garnish and Roasted Potatoes or Czech dumpling, topped with organic Herbs) - Beef was so tender and delicious with the Sour note from the Creamy Sauce. Torte(European style 3-layered Torte $11) - We chose a Mocha filled Meringue Torte which was perfectly light without feeling sugary or heavy. Jarmila gave us some cute Vizovice Christmas Decorative Pastry as we ended our stay but a lovely intimate dining experience overall, something that not many restaurants within this Niagara region can provide.

Love this cute place with old charm... it's off the beaten path, so you won't see it being full but the food is good!!! And with organically grown vegetables, and the friendly host... it's worth checking out!!

In search of Czech food wherever I live or travel, I quickly spotted Red Chateau in a restaurant search on Yelp in Niagara Falls. While their website left me a bit nervous about the atmosphere (mostly due to the black background, bold red font and flickering candle lights), the one review on Yelp gave me hope for some tasty Czech food. I made a reservation same-day and by the time we showed up at 7:30pm (on a Monday), the place was empty. It was a pretty dark space, and small with maybe 6 two-person tables in the front room of the first floor of this house. The CBC (Canadian Broadcast Channel) was streaming classical music from the bar. Nice touch. We ordered from the Red Wine menu a "sweet" bottle of U.S.A. wine. Since it wasn't on the dessert menu, I thought maybe it was just sweeter than usual. Turned out to be just slightly fermented Concord grape juice. Way too sweet. The owner is a one-person show: phone answering, food serving, cooking and entertaining. The pattern of the meal went like this: she would walk over, she'd chat us up, we'd ask for something, she'd write it down, she'd head to the kitchen and then bring it back what we ordered. Our first request was wine and water. Our second request was an appetizer -- Czech dumplings. After she ceremoniously wrote down the order, she went back into the kitchen. We heard small noises, and then my favorite sound, the microwave beeps... The dumplings came out, with sauerkraut The sauerkraut was dry (maybe the liquid would ruin the texture of the dumplings) and the dumplings did not seem fresh. They reminded me of defrosted pastry on the outside, completely edible, but not fresh. The inside consisted of the smoky pork promised on the menu. I wouldn't recommend the dumplings. The reason I can give 4 stars, however, is the main course! Holy cow, so good! I had the Hungarian Chicken Paprikish, and my "husband" (appointed by the owner) had the Hungarian Pork Goulash. Both came with delicious Czech dumplings (slices of boiled water and yeast bread) and the sauces extra spicy. I tried both dishes. Their meats were both very tender, and the complexity of the sauce made them both worth the $29. I'd highly recommend going for the entrees. Last came the dessert, the "Pavlova," a merengue with berries, berry compote and whipped cream. The berries, we were told, came from the garden and were mighty tasty. At $13 I'm not sure I'd get it again, but then again, I wasn't there for dessert. All in all, try this place out for the entrees. Czech and Hungarian food is some of my favorite and I rarely find an authentic place to grab some. It's also a nice reprieve from the crazy neon lights of Niagara Falls.

Coq Au Vin. Chicken and Pork dish

My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant when we arrived in Niagara Falls on Sunday. Although it was Sunday evening, the restaurant was not busy and in a way it worked fine because the owner is also a cook as well as a server. She was very friendly and the food was uniquely delicious to our taste. It was a little too dark inside because the chandelier had only one light and a little candle on the table was blown right away when she brought it to us. We had a red cabbage salad for appetizer and it was good to make our mouth watery. The main dishes were good too, even though I now don't really remember how to pronounce them! Yes, like some reviews here said the plates were pricey, but the experience and the food was quite unique and the ingredients were all organic. Since I enjoyed my company most of all, I liked having my first meal in Canada at this kind of restaurant that I wouldn't be able to find easily in the States.

The schnitzel that I ordered (Wiener Schnitzel) was enough to feed 3 people. Mine was with the potato salad that you pay an extra $2 (worth it in my opinion) or you could get it with rice and fries. It also comes with a salad. We also ordered the Potato Dumplings (Halusky) which brought memories of my trip to Slovakia a while ago. We also ordered some Pillsners Urkell to wash down our food. The schnitzel is a bit on the salty side so the Halusky, potato salad and salad provides a nice balance. The food took a very long time to arrive so that's something to be aware of. I'm not sure if it was a one off or if it's a regular occurrence. The food was worth the wait though. My advice will be to come as soon as they are open. The decor needs improvement but you are not coming here for the ambience. The food prices might seems expensive but when you compare it with the amount of food that you get, it's really not. There's parking at the back and the restaurant it's a bit lax about their opening time which is 5pm. We arrived at 5pm but needed to knock so they could open for us. It's in the same block as Dairy Cream so it was convenient for us. We did not finish our food as we were saving room for the ice cream. It's worth a visit if you are fan of schnitzels!

The owner (I believe she is the owner) greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere. She brought us water and menus. My sister and I ordered 2 cabbage rolls, Potato and Cheese Pierogies, Meat Pierogies with bacon and onions to share. For my son, we tried ordering the schnitzel sandwich, but was told that was unavailable. My son doesn't eat mashed potatoes so I asked if I could just order him a schnitzel and she said yes. The food came out in about 15 minutes. The cabbage rolls were fantastic, the perfect amount of acidity in the sauce. I really don't like tomatoes or cabbage, but there is something special about the cabbage rolls. I ate very bit of mine. The pierogies were wonderful. I usually prefer just potato and cheese, but honestly between those and the meat, I couldn't decide which I liked more. Both were flavorful especially with the sauteed onions and sour cream. My son's schnitzel was huge! He could only eat about half of it and when my son asked for ketchup (much to my dismay) the owner was very nice about it and commented that's the way her daughter likes it too. Honestly the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was great. It was very similar to what I had in Poland. If this restaurant was closer to my home I would visit often. We had no issue with parking. We were able to get a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant. Parking was also not too expensive since you aren't in the downtown area. If you are in the area and want a wonderful meal, be sure to visit.

Street parking was reasonably easy to find. We were seated way back in the restaurant and the seating was a little uncomfortable as our table was set up right next to the bar (but way too close to the bar, because our table was long) and other patrons had to constantly shimmy through a small gap between our table and the bar to get to the washrooms downstairs. Not great. We ordered a family style meals to share (combo for 2 and a combo for 4) and the amount of food that came out was probably enough to feed 10 very hungry adults. Definitely do not indulge on the bread basket that comes before the meal, because you will need to save room for the main event. The massive platters came loaded with pierogies, 2 different types of cabbage rolls (my favs!), schnitzels, and various condiments (?) of cooked beets, carrots, cabbages...etc. We were first served 1 different soups; white borscht and beet soup and both were tasty. The meat dumplings in the beet soup balanced out the sweetness of the broth and it worked well. I personally preferred the white borscht which was perfectly sour and a slightly over-powering sausage taste. The refreshing cucumber salad with dill in sour cream was a great accompaniment to somewhat heavy tasting meal. The hunters stew was a hearty bowl of tender morsels of meat, potato dumplings in a well balanced tomato based sauce. Although most of our food was great, we found the cabbage rolls (the traditional tomato version) and the schnitzels too dry. And along with the issue of having to deal with people constantly brushing by, I am taking away 2 stars. I may revisit Cafe Polonez if I'm back in the area, but not in a huge rush either.
