This evening my wife and I enjoyed the Cold Sesame Noodles (chili oil on the side), Wood-ear Mushrooms and Cucumber Salad appetizers along with delicious Hot & Sour Soup and Hunan Lamb. As always, each dish was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. The restaurant itself is very attractive - casual but certainly elevated in appearance and atmosphere. Nice for family events, dates and just a fine dining experience. Worthy of special mention is the staff and service. They pace the courses, avoiding overcrowding table tops and hot dishes waiting while appetizers and soups are not yet finished. Servers anticipated our needs and pace. Red Bowl is one of those places that just makes you happy the second you walk in. It's owned by the sweetest family whose kids went to the school where I teach, and you can feel their warmth in everything from the food to the way they greet you. The dining room and bar were all decked out for Christmas and looked beautiful. Cozy lights, festive decorations, and comfy chairs that make you want to stay forever. We got a big round table in the back with a giant lazy Susan, and I swear we could've spun that thing all night. We ordered a ton of food to share because that's the only right way to do it. The wonton soup was perfect on a 30-degree night. The crispy honey beef stole the show. We even ordered it twice because it was that good. The steamed dumplings (both chicken and vegetable), pork fried rice, lo mein, and sesame chicken were all delicious. Not a single miss. Dessert was just as amazing. We tried three mochi flavors (green tea won my heart), plus cheesecake and a chocolate fondant that was ridiculously good. This is my favorite Chinese in the neighborhood, primarily because it's not what one expects. The space is large, with several side rooms, and an area that used to be a patio, but is now a covered indoor space, with shades that can be drawn across them. Very clean looking and with sharp service: no less than two different waiters came up to ensure we had drinks coming, which were creative, not merely Tiki Bar staples. I had a whisky and tea-based cocktail that was excellent. The food... excellent. From the crab rangoon and soup dumplings with a ginger soy sauce to my wife's Singapore noodles, my lamb and vegetable stir-fry, and my son's pork.... We kept eating even after we were full simply to get more of the flavors. Generous portions. We took plenty of leftovers at the end. Do not expect typical Chinese from a neighborhood storefront. This is two levels higher. And do try the beers. China produces twice the amount the US does, and it goes very well with the food. Better, usually, than wine. read more

I came in tonight to order pan fried pork dumplings (fried on both sides) and pork fried rice to go. While my food was being prepared, I ordered a spicy margarita on the rocks with salt. Very upscale Chinese American spot in Bay Ridge. Pricey but the food quality is tremendous. I will declare them the best Scallion Cakes I have ever had, they have a flaky,almost pastry quality and are not overly greasy like many of them tend to be. The General Tsos chicken is nice chunks of white meat chicken with a sauce that doesnt go into the cloying area that so many do. The Pork in Garlic sauce has very fork tender pieces of pork and the veggies are all great quality. The Hot and Sour soup is perfect for when you feel youre coming down with a cold in all its sinus clearing goodness.The Chicken Wings were meaty and well made i went with the Soy Garlic ones. The only item i wasnt crazy over was the eggrolls which I didnt feel were crisp enough and filling was 95% cabbage. Only issues I have with them is not having Combination Platters like virtually every other Chinese American pot and the prices are really high which makes them more a splurge than the average Chinese spot. What a great experience I'm born in Brooklyn living in LA visiting so my brother he took me to the Red Bowl Chinese Restaurant. He praised everything about the Establishment and he was right. The service is excellent and beautiful Big fish tank to look at, and the food was absolutely delicious right on the money. I had the combination fried rice the house rice the chicken was excellent and my brother got broccoli and beef, dessert was good pistachio cake out of this world. Plan B for Chinese food has been found in Brooklyn, or at least southern Brooklyn. I can understand why this restaurant gets busy, why many people prefer to order here, all you have to do is take one bite. It does not take a genius to figure it out. All of the food is fresh and tastes great. The portion sizes are plentiful and prices are more than reasonable for what you can expect for a New York City chinese restaurant. The 1980's music in the background combined with attentive wait staff make for a pleasant experience. It was fun to eat to Wang Chung, the Human League, and other New Wave bands of the decade. I really hope they do not use MSG in their food. That is cheating to me. It adds flavor and holds the food better, but it also makes the food more salty and less healthy to eat. However, the service is part of the reason I give this restaurant more than three and a half stars. I will be back to try other items. read more

This is a very very good restaurant. Their soups are excellent, particularly their hot & sour, all the soups are served in large red bowls. We also enjoyed the scallion pancakes. Their main dishes are also very large, we particularly enjoyed their lamb, and the shrimp with walnuts. Their wait staff has been friendly sand attentive, their prices are quite reasonable, and the restaurant is nicely decorated. The restaurant is designed luxuriously, giving welcoming and quality vibes. Inside is very spacious, and the bathroom downstairs is just amazingly clean and sleek. My favorite from the menu has to be the spicy rock shrimp, which never fails to disappoint. Spicy rock shrimp $14 (5/5) - You have to give this starter a try, as it's a game-changer! There's a nice kick of spice in the sauce, and is a good-sized portion. Scallion pancakes $7 (3.5/5) - good but a lot thinner than I expected. Personally I would have liked it to be doughier and chewier. BBQ Boneless Ribs, basically char siu $11 (5/5) - really enjoyed this one as the meat was juicy and saucy; the flavoring on the ribs are sweet and salty, and comes with some chopped cabbage underneath. Sizzling Crispy Duck $35 (5/5) - didn't know what to expect as I never had this before. Came on a sizzling plate with lots of veggies under the duck, and ofc a bowl of rice. While our dinner experience would have earned a 3.5-star rating, we're lowering our score to a 2-star rating due to inconsistent tip suggestions on the receipts. We've attached both our original and final receipts for transparency. After our favorite Sichuan spot closed, we decided to try Red Bowl based on its high ratings and a menu featuring some of our favorite dishes. **The Good:** * The decor is nice, and the restaurant feels very clean. * Plenty of seating, including booths and tables. * The staff was polite and attentive--our water glasses were always full and food arrived hot and promptly. * Restrooms were clean and well-stocked. **The Food:** * Beef Chow Fun: Just okay; beef wasn't as tender as we prefer. * Beef in Hot Oil: Sauce was overly starchy, making it thick and gooey. Beef also lacked tenderness. * Fish in Hot Oil: Generous portion of fish, but again the sauce was too starchy, affecting the overall flavor and texture. **The Tip Issue:** We understand that restaurants may charge a small credit card surcharge, and in this case, it was $3. Our pre-tax bill was $69. On the first receipt, tip suggestions were based on the pre-tax amount, which we appreciated. However, when we received the final payment slip (after opting to pay by credit card), the suggested tip amounts increased disproportionately. Tip suggestions should follow the same methodology. Here's the breakdown: * Pre-tax + surcharge = $69 + $3 = $72 * An 18% tip on $72 should be $12.96, but the suggested tip was $13.52 * A 20% tip should be $14.40, but was listed as $15.02 * A 25% tip should be $18.00, but was shown as $18.78 While the differences may seem extremely small and petty to some people, the principle matters. ONLY ORDER CANTONESE FOOD This place is billed as Sichuan but it really really is not (meaning: SKIP THE "SICHUAN SPECIALTY DISHES" PART OF THE MENU). Grand Sichuan House some blocks away is where to go for that. But, if you order the Cantonese dishes, you have a great restaurant that can compete with the ones over in Sunset Park's Chinatown. In particular, you must try the Crispy Honey Beef and the Glazed Mayo Prawns. These are two incredibly classic Canto dishes and Red Bowl does them very well.
