The second morning I realized it was the smell of a hot wire. I traced it to a sub panel in our furnace enclosure. Taking off the cover, I could see the melting insulation and read the temperature of the thick cable at over 600°. We called out an HVAC company. Their man made a good effort and replaced a breaker in the box. However, the next morning I could smell the cooking fish again. They recommended Jefferson Electric. Jefferson sent out a supervisor to assess the situation and give us a quote. He ended up going to buy the parts, replacing the entire box and solving the problem, removing our fire hazard.
