I've driven past Recipes at Crooks and Big Beaver in Troy more times than I can count. From the outside, it honestly doesn't look like much, which is probably why I never stopped in. But this morning, while scrolling on my phone, it somehow popped up in my feed. I checked it out and thought, wow, this place looks amazing. I decided today was the day--and I'm so glad I did. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed. I was greeted by two different people right away, which immediately made me feel welcome. After I sat down, I met Grace--who was absolutely outstanding. I loved that she wrote her name on the paper at my table so I wouldn't forget it. Such a simple touch, but it really stood out. She was upbeat, friendly, and an absolute pleasure to deal with. I ordered the Country Benedict with a glass of water and an unsweetened iced tea. First of all, I have to say how much I appreciated the cubed potatoes instead of hash browns. I'm not a fan of undercooked or raw potatoes--I like them cooked--and these were perfect. The Country Benedict itself was incredible: an English muffin topped with chicken, a perfectly poached egg, and gravy. Oh my God--it was so delicious. I honestly cannot believe I've never been here before. This place is amazing. The food was excellent, the service was top‑notch, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. The overall dining experience was enjoyable. The ambiance was pleasant, the food was well prepared, and the staff particularly our waitress were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, while eating the strawberry cheesecake French toast, I discovered a hair in my food. While the dish itself tasted good, finding hair in the meal was extremely off-putting and raised concerns about the kitchen's attention to cleanliness and food handling. Edit* they also replaced the food as well, but did not offer a discount or remove the item from the bill, or offer a complimentary desert, for their mistake. I hope the restaurant takes greater care in the future with food preparation and health quality control so situations like this can be avoided. The restaurant doesn't deserve a 1 star because the food is genuinely good and the people are very nice. This was just my personal experience. read more

There were several things on the menu that I wanted to try but they all came topped with eggs and none of the options were "scrambled really well ." I didn't feel comfortable enough to ask if any of the selections could be done sans eggs so I guess shame on me - felt like I'd insult them if I asked. Anyways, everything I did get was unremarkable. Yummy food, attentive staff, and generous portions! This is a hidden gem in Troy. Very homey feel, perfect for any occasion. We LOVE their sticky buns, a must try. Their stuffed avocado salad was huge, but the dressing was nice and light and very refreshing. It came with a whole avocado and large scoops of tuna. If you are a fan of brussel sprouts, definitely order their brussel sprout hash from the specials menu! The crab cake Benedict was yummy too. Very generous portion but not too heavy or salty! A friend suggested I try this place. I drove by noticed that the sign said breakfast lunch and dinner. Took the family there a week after for dinner and it was completely closed up. Seems misleading that the sign would say dinner. I talked to somebody else and they said that sign has been there for years. you would think they would take the time to change the sign or at least cover up the dinner part so people don't drive there to find it closed. they don't have to spend the money to change. I started eating at the Farmington location years ago then moved to the east side and was happy to find new locations out here. I have dined off and on at the Crooks restaurant . Today we decided to dine at this location. Unfortunately, our experience was less than pleasing. Note the table service was great. One Star because the food service (cook/chef) was awful. The omelet was very dry,only a small amount of cheese. The sausage,ham and bacon were good inside but the peppers and onions were RAW. It looked like they hit the grill where they received a blessing of oil and then were instantly stuffed into the omelette. Oh, we were told "post covid" they only serve one slice of toast. Isn't it surprising how covid has changed the number of toast slices served for breakfast. Then we were told that it is up to the owner of each particular recipe to decide if they want to serve one or two slices of bread. Not specialty bread, just plain old standard restaurant white bread. I could maybe see if it was a fancy oversized sourdough or Texas toast or...... but it isn't. Call me old school but I still think two slices. LOL Now their potatoes at recipe are delicious. The cheap generic ketchup not so much. We typically do not slather our food with ketchup but tried to resurrect the omelet and the ketchup just ruined whatever it touched. Now let's talk about the biscuits and gravy. The gravy is mediocre with a significant amount of pepper. We typically like pepper and this was a little too much. The biscuits were cold and so dry when pick up to put butter on them they broke apart into small pieces having to eat them with a fork. I was really hungry and am not one to send food back to be remade. We did notify the staff and were informed that all of the biscuits were this dry and would come to the table the same so no reason to have had it remade. Throughout the years the standard serving has been two slices of toast. My first thought when the food arrived was a piece had to have fallen off the plate... Nope,only get one slice. Our bill was over $30.00, not including tip for an omelette($15.00),an order of biscuits and gravy, and two eggs à la cart. It's a breakfast and lunch place folks with an excellent menu. We've been dining at the Haggerty location for at least 10 years and never had a bad meal! Service is great. And Recipes' is family owned and they take great pride in the food they serve and service they render. One ought to be wary of self proclaimed restaurant and cuisine critics whose only expertise is that they post the most number of reviews on Yelp. I would suggest that simply taking a look at the background of overly wordy and critical reviewers and you will see what I mean. If you don't like the food or service at any restaurant then take it up with the owner or manager rather than hiding behind a keyboard posing as a critic. Our party of three stopped in on a Saturday morning for breakfast. The restaurant is light and bright. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. My mother had the avocado toast with poached eggs, which she enjoyed. My husband had an omelette which he also enjoyed. I had the Straggler Skillet. Skillets are my go to when out for breakfast and usually it's a safe choice, but not at Recipes. The straggler comes with ham, tomato, onion and mushrooms. Usually the vegetables in a skillet are cooked before being added to the potatoes. Not here. I believe they took scoops of the vegetables and added them to the potatoes before topping with cheese. The only cooking seems to have been the melting of the cheese before adding the eggs. I ate part of the skillet before the raw white onion became too much to continue eating. In addition, I ordered hot tea and the others ordered coffee. My husband asked for a refill but the hostess who was helping refill cups wouldn't give him coffee because she saw my hot water pot near him. We got it straightened out but it took a lot more explaining then it really should have. The customer has a coffee cup and asked for a refill. Why give him a hard time because there is a tea pot on the table where two other people are also seated? We are glad we gave Recipes a try but likely won't return. read more

This used to be my go-to place when I lived in Troy and loved it. I decided to go back after a few years to check it out, and unfortunately, the quality has gone down. They used to have fresh cream for coffees, and now it's the standard half and half (no flavors), and there aren't any kids drinks included with meals- milk for my son was $3. They had one breakfast kids meal, and it only included a pancake for $7-$8. I didn't have kids before but was disappointed in the lack of options. My husband and I got the chuck wagon skillet, and before, the vegetables were sautéed and married with the steak nicely. This time, they seemed to have been just cooked with the potatoes. They were raw, and the raw onion was overpowering. The potatoes were very bland, and there seemed to be a massive lack of seasoning overall. The cheese was melted nicely, which saved it a bit. The atmosphere is inviting, and the waitress was great, but for $62, I expected more. I don't know if we'll be back. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect coming here, and have heard both good and mediocre responses to Recipes. Breakfast has become a tight market around here, and it's hard to choose where to eat sometimes. The competition's stiff, and Recipes seems to do just fine. Walking in, the place wasn't all that busy. I reviewed the menu and had a hard time deciding what to get. Not the snazziest menu, but enough options for whomever you are dining with. I noticed on their daily specials that they had a chicken and waffles special, and that seemed to catch my eye, so I went ahead and ordered it. I really wasn't sure what to expect when it came out, but I bumped the review up a star because the food was really good. I don't know why I wasn't expecting much, but I was surprised at how good the food came out. The dish really left a good impression, and overall, I was very happy with what I experienced. Service here is on point and the place seems to be well run. My server was professional and prompt, along with the other staff I noticed working there today. My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be much of a waiting area here, and I know the place can sometimes get rather busy. I don't know how they handle that, but I wouldn't wait outside for this place, because I can go to the coney next door if I'm starving like I was today. My friend and I partaked in avocado toast, and I got the ribeye skillet with potatoes, eggs, and sautéed peppers and onions which was great, and my friend got a Mexican style skillet. It's a very quaint and homey place! We waited about 10 minutes even though we saw a couple tables open but not a big deal as we were not in a rush. But boy, they were pretty busy. We ordered right away and our food still took a bit. They had a seasonal hot apple cider drink with whipped cream and it smelled and tasted amazing. I ordered the Strawberry Cheesecake French Toast and it was ginormous! I thought the french toast was okay but the strawberries were plump and the cheesecake filling was delicious. We had just closed on the sale of our house and were discussing where we could go to celebrate so I searched on Yelp and saw that Recipes was almost next-door with decent ratings and an interesting-looking menu so we stopped looking and went there. Originally we thought a breakfast would be nice but it was later than I thought so this was perfect because they had breakfast and lunch choices to choose from. They have parking and an entrance in the back of the building so we parked and went in to a friendly greeting and were seated immediately. Our server came over with menus and water and took our drink order as she wrote her name on the paper table covering, upside down to her, readable to us while we asked for coffee and continued to study the menus. Since it was late morning, I decided to order the Korean Banh Mi sandwich and my wife ordered a noodle dish. They came out rather quickly and were delicious. We rarely order dessert but this was the day for that. Wife ordered Affogato and I ordered the Apple filled Egg Roll that were worth the visit by themselves. I had the country Benedict. I wasn't overly impressed. I'm sorry to say I was really looking forward to something that might have been very warming and filling. The potatoes were very bland and pretty much squared and deep-fried possibly out of a package. The gravy had nobody, and definitely not a lot of flavor. I had great hopes for my breakfast. One of my favorite breakfast/lunch places in Oakland County! Their staff is friendly (especially Sharon), the prices reasonable, and the food is delicious. My breakfast go-to is the make-your-own skillet, which I usually order with chorizo or bacon, fried eggs, jalapeño, and zucchini. Yum. The potatoes that come with the skillets are delicious, too! For lunch, I highly recommend their open-faced BLT. I usually get it with avocado on top. It's very messy and not particularly easy to eat, but very tasty. I came here months ago for lunch and I really enjoyed my meal. I decided to come here this past weekend for breakfast. We got here around 10:30 and we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table; which isn't too bad because the place is kinda small and we came right after people were getting out of church. The restaurant maximizes it's space and they are many tables, but not where you feel crowded and that the table next to you can hear your whole conversation. The menu is quite extensive with many diverse options. The biggest decision was if i wanted to eat lunch or breakfast! I ended up going with a breakfast special, Avocado Toast, which was fantastic!!!! The avocados were super fresh and tasty. I also ordered the side of biscuits with blackberry sauce. The biscuits were homemade and really fluffy and good; i could've done without the blackberry sauce...it was too much and i couldn't get past all the seeds in the sauce. It was recommended on the menu; it just wasn't my thing. My sister and brother-in-law both enjoyed their meals as well. Portions are decent and prices are reasonable. Came around 12:40 pm on a Saturday morning with a 15 minute wait. They are always busy on the weekends. Seated 4 gals right by the front window. We all came at different times and love that they still seat us with a busy room for lunch. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and checked up on us for refills and to see how we were doing. Down to the food, I ordered the salmon hash, friend #1 ordered the ranchero, friend #2 ordered the stagger, and friend #3 ordered the crab hash. The salmon and crab were a little fishy, but outside of that everything was good good. Met my daughter's new BF for the first time here today. Sharon is a treasure. My 4-1/2 year d grandson is quite a savvy diner. I'm not sure how they voodoo their potatoes, but they were fluffy and crisp. And the bell pepper confetti and onions were caramelized to perfection, complimentary and not overwhelming. As I worked my way through my brunch, I kept thinking this is the cleanest, least greasy corned beef hash I've ever had. Okay, my best experience with hash included chunks of fatted corned beef hash with deliciously butter fried potatoes might have been tastier, but this was the tastiest 'healthier' alternative I've ever had. My grandson snapped up my grapes and cantaloupe side, the whites from my lovely hash-topper braised eggs, shared the crab cake Benny with his auntie and had some pancakes bites topped with cinnamon apples. The couple at the adjacent table overhead our conversation and we learned they were from the same Quad Cities area as the BF. They commented that they were 'cracking up' by my grandson's enthusiasm, even as we gently implored him to use his 'indoor voice'. I have dined at the Farmington restaurant as well. That pork chop lettuce Asian noodle thing is to die for. Even the leftovers were delicious. And the blackberry biscuits? My 91-year old mom absolutely swooned over them when I brought her some takeout. Just a lovely Sunday noon with my girls, grandson, the new BF, fabulous service and good food. read more
