The cinema that ruins every other cinema experience for ever more…read more Quite simply the finest, classiest, most demure, seductive, charming and good old-fashioned fun cinema experience in Sydney and quite possibly the universe. Every time you visit a soulless megaplex after your time at Hayden Orpheum it will be a singularly disappointing experience bereft of any aesthetics or cultural value because really, how can anything compare? The cinemas are stunning art deco, they sell old-school choc tops, there's a solid program of the latest blockbusters and art house / doco fare, and they have insanely fun cult classics like a monthly interactive showing of the word movie ever made, The Room. There are love seats in the main cinema, and a freaking organ that rises up out of the floor for matinee performances. I know right! What what all the way. Best.

The Orpheum has kept it's gorgeous original deco interiors and exteriors intact, and the last time I visited (John Cleese triple bill including the Life Of Brian on Easter Sunday- kudos Orpheum!), there was a vintage pianist playing the grand piano in the lobby. I would love to see a silent movie thing here and I would bet money that they do them, it's that kind of place. Check out retro cinema Sundays- awesome and affordable triple bills that people dress up for. Old school wholesome entertainment, I love it.

The cinema has its own cafe located just before the screening hall. The cafe offers a range of beverages from tea and coffee to alcohol. So it makes it convenient to grab a quick bite before entering. The seating for the cafe has a great view onto the ice rink too so that's pretty cool. This cinema offers Gold Class too for those who want to splurge out and get those sexy reclining sofas that go all the way back. The cinema has about 8 screens so you have plenty of movies to choose from throughout the day. The cinema doesn't seem to have any V-max screens which is very surprising considering it's almost a must now to watch the latest blockbuster with surround sound and a huge screen. Overall though nice cinema and perfectly located surrounded by all the food choices that the shopping complex has.

It's just one big square loop of a corridor with cinemas coming off of it, so inevitably you'll end up with zombies running at you from both sides, or stuck cowering in a corner of a dark cinema as you await your fate. That aside, the Event at Macquarie is pretty ok if you just want to go watch a movie. There's a bar/cafe thing in addition to the usual candy bar, though you have an abundance of cafes and supermarkets to choose from if you want to sneak some cheaper and better coffee and snacks in. The screens are...big (as usual??) and the chairs usually clean enough, though try to avoid losing things down the gap between the seat and the arm rest. It's...just...don't.

Check this crazy story of Hoyts screwing and scamming people! Sorry in advance if I'm bitter (be…read morewarned there will be some swearing)...so I finally decided to see Star Wars today and was a bit surprised that it cost $42.30 for 1 ticket, a large coke and large popcorn especially since they didn't have any prices on the menu as they had one of the stupid new digital ones that is always changing and only said "from $5.10" for drinks and "from $6.95" for popcorn. I didn't have time to argue as the movie was about to start so I just asked for the receipt. The girl didn't know how to print the receipt so she had to call a manager to tell her how to print one, wtf? Grabbed it and ran into the theater. Turns out I didn't have to run as they had 18 fucking minutes of commercials before the movie started. I don't mind watching previews of new movies but they only had 2 of those and the rest were ads...isn't the whole point of paying for a movie is so that you don't have to watch ads? This isn't free TV or free radio. So the movie starts and I'm already a bit bitter especially since my popcorn was already gone before it started. But I settled in and it turned out to be a pretty good movie...although I was kind of expecting halfway thru for them to stop the movie and have more ads, I mean why the fuck not? Movie finishes and I go to see if I can find the prices...didn't see them so I asked the same girl that rang me up how much a large pop and popcorn was, and she said the combo is $20.90. I started to turn and walk away when out of the corner of my eye I see a small screen that flashes a quick menu of all the prices so I wait for it to scroll thru all the screens (like 10 of them) before it cycled back and flashes for less than 2 seconds and it's gone again. Didn't even have enough time to see how much either of them were it went so fast. So I wait for the cycle again and bam, I see a large popcorn is $9.95. But have to wait again for it to cycle thru so I can find the drinks but miss it again cause it cycles so fast but get it the third time...$8.40 for a large soda, so I should have only been charged $18.35! I take a picture of the menu with my phone and ask for the manager. She comes down and I tell her I think I was overcharged for my pop and popcorn. She looks at my receipt and says, "nope that is correct, a large pop and popcorn "COMBO" is $20.90". I say clearly if you add up the two individual prices that it only comes to $18.35. You won't believe what she says next! "Well, ya if you bought them individually that's what they cost but you got a combo and that's the price of a combo. And because you already ate and drank the stuff there is nothing I can do." That is literally what she said and I so wish I would have recorded this conversation. So I'm like, "so you are saying it's cheaper to buy the individually than in a combo" and she says something like, "yes, cause that's the way we were told to ring them up" and then she goes on to say something about how it's $27 for a large star wars combo with the souvenir tin/cup but if customers don't want that, then they downgrade it to $20.90. I'm just flabbergasted at this point and don't know what to say so I just say, "none of this is making sense to me and I honestly do not understand what's going on..this is crazy...especially since you say you can't do anything about it but you can at least give me $3 back, right?"..."I guess I could do that" she says and goes and gets the money. The kicker to the story is because I had to stay after the movie to talk with her (and watch 18 minutes of ads), the mall only gives you 3 hours free and it put me 15 minutes over, so I was now supposed to be charged $5 to exit. I left the ticket inside the car so instead of paying at the machine before I left I would just pay with my credit card at the gate. But thank god, for some reason the gate was open (pretty sure cause a huge rainstorm had just came thru and they kept them open so people didn't have to get their cars soaking wet putting their windows down) so I didn't have to pay! Yay. So the point of the story is: #FuckYouHoyts , I will avoid you as much as possible in the future...just think of all the hundreds of innocent people you scam every day. No wonder the theater was almost empty and doesn't surprise me that movie theaters aren't doing well nowadays especially when we now pay so that we can watch ads before the movie! Can you at least put an asterisk on your website that states *there will be 18 minutes of commercials added on to the start of the movie and *it's more expensive to by a combo than individual items. Please share this with all your family and friends so they can be warned the next time they go to the movies and so they don't get screwed this xmas. End rant. #hoyts #hoytscinema #hoytslux #warringahmall #hoytswarringah #warringahmallwestfield #westfieldwarringahmall #westfield

Even though we had just travelled about 24 hours, we decided a movie would be a nice way to kill said time. I thought it would be a nice nap time but the movie was interesting and none of us slept. This theater is odd but interesting. You buy tickets at the concession stand. I wish I had tried the popcorn but I assumed I might not be awake so eating was out. The theaters are spread around the floor in different pockets of the area, so it's more like walking to a different shop. Even though it was a matinee, we were told it was mostly sold out and that we'd have to sit in the second row. This worried me but the person selling the tickets said it's where they prefer to sit and, again, I assumed I'd sleep so we agreed. We sat in theater 11 and lone behold, it wasn't going to be a problem because the screen is far away and there's a good amount of space between the front row and the screen. The other unique thing about this room was there was a large window. I've never seen this in a movie theater before and it was cool. Don't worry, the drapes, once closed, were nice and thick and let no light in. The seats were comfy and did manually recline. I only like to recline if there's a leg rest though so I didn't do that.
