Would have been nice to also prebook my seat. The cinema needed a vacuum and a clean as it seems they just played back to back movies. The thing that saved the rating was it was almost empty so finding seats wasn't difficult. All in all a reasonable experience. Lost a star due to cleanliness on the night and not being able to prebook my seat after paying a premium.

There is parking outside too which is for 2 hours so just enough time to see a movie. I wouldn't go out of my way to come to this cinema, but if you're local its a good option.

So if you've taken the trouble to buy your tickets online, and want to relax and have a drink before or during the movie, you still need to line up with everyone else who hasn't bothered to buy a ticket in advance. I would gladly have had a few drinks before the film but was dissuaded from doing so by the long and slow line. These guys need to do a better job at improving the venue experience. For example, install self service kiosks where people can purchase tickets and then free up staff to provide fast and friendly service at the bar. Speaking of the staff, they all seemed pretty demoralized last night when I was there! No smiles, just the perfunctory barking of crowd-control commands like 'cinema six is now open'! Lastly the bins and toilets were pretty disgusting last night by the end of the evening show, making it clear that they're emptied/cleaned at most 2 times a day. We live in an age when home movie streaming has made massive inroads into the revenue model of cinemas, so they need to make sure the venue experience is first class. Licensing cinemas was a good first step, but clearly Palace Cinemas need to do a little more.

It's impossible to completely clean all the popcorn that spills from the bottom of the carton. In our theatre tonight, the seat numbers were incorrect and I was fearful someone would ask us to move. Great sound and seating is comfy enough for a two hour movie. Cleaner bathrooms and viewing areas would restore this place to its earlier standard.

There were three people behind the counter and about 20-30 people waiting in queue. First red flag was that there weren't enough employees, or employees doing their job so shitty that they managed to create a queue of people on a Sunday. They were out of large popcorn. Let me repeat: THEY WERE "OUT" OF LARGE POPCORN. HOW. DAMN well order the larger cardboard popcorn boxes. Maybe learn how to run a business? Everyone tells me that a theatres major source of income is the food and drink yet they can't even offer what people want? Larger flipping boxes?!? They were also out of choc tops??? I'm only a little mad. The lobby was literally falling apart. The carpet was matted, the tiled floors were sticky as if they hadn't been cleaned in eons. The theater had also not been cleaned. There was trash still in the seats and we had to claw out way to sit down. SURE - the tickets are cheap but in no way is it a worthwhile experience.

They funnel you past the candy bar as you go up (no prices on display last time I went although this may have changed, which is annoying because I want to know how much I'm getting slugged for those sweet, sweet choc tops and gummi bears). Every time you visit a soulless megaplex after your time at Hayden Orpheum it will be a singularly disappointing experience bereft of any aesthetics or cultural value because really, how can anything compare? The cinemas are stunning art deco, they sell old-school choc tops, there's a solid program of the latest blockbusters and art house / doco fare, and they have insanely fun cult classics like a monthly interactive showing of the word movie ever made, The Room. There are love seats in the main cinema, and a freaking organ that rises up out of the floor for matinee performances. I know right! What what all the way. Best.

The Orpheum has kept it's gorgeous original deco interiors and exteriors intact, and the last time I visited (John Cleese triple bill including the Life Of Brian on Easter Sunday- kudos Orpheum!), there was a vintage pianist playing the grand piano in the lobby. I would love to see a silent movie thing here and I would bet money that they do them, it's that kind of place. Check out retro cinema Sundays- awesome and affordable triple bills that people dress up for. Old school wholesome entertainment, I love it.
