Would have been nice to also prebook my seat. The cinema needed a vacuum and a clean as it seems they just played back to back movies. The thing that saved the rating was it was almost empty so finding seats wasn't difficult. All in all a reasonable experience. Lost a star due to cleanliness on the night and not being able to prebook my seat after paying a premium.

And it's usually the latest release too! Event cinemas has plenty of screens and it's usually not packed or sold out. Unless of course, there is a new Harry Potter film released. If you have booked your tickets online and plan to Jump the Q, enter from the left and proceed directly to the counter. Most other Cinemas, have better signage about the quick ticket collection when compared to Burwood. If you plan on watching a movie after 6pm, it is better to park in the lower parking lot at the cinema level as the mall closes on most days, and you could get trapped getting to your car on another level.

So if you've taken the trouble to buy your tickets online, and want to relax and have a drink before or during the movie, you still need to line up with everyone else who hasn't bothered to buy a ticket in advance. I would gladly have had a few drinks before the film but was dissuaded from doing so by the long and slow line. These guys need to do a better job at improving the venue experience. For example, install self service kiosks where people can purchase tickets and then free up staff to provide fast and friendly service at the bar. Speaking of the staff, they all seemed pretty demoralized last night when I was there! No smiles, just the perfunctory barking of crowd-control commands like 'cinema six is now open'! Lastly the bins and toilets were pretty disgusting last night by the end of the evening show, making it clear that they're emptied/cleaned at most 2 times a day. We live in an age when home movie streaming has made massive inroads into the revenue model of cinemas, so they need to make sure the venue experience is first class. Licensing cinemas was a good first step, but clearly Palace Cinemas need to do a little more.

Every time you visit a soulless megaplex after your time at Hayden Orpheum it will be a singularly disappointing experience bereft of any aesthetics or cultural value because really, how can anything compare? The cinemas are stunning art deco, they sell old-school choc tops, there's a solid program of the latest blockbusters and art house / doco fare, and they have insanely fun cult classics like a monthly interactive showing of the word movie ever made, The Room. There are love seats in the main cinema, and a freaking organ that rises up out of the floor for matinee performances. I know right! What what all the way. Best.

The Orpheum has kept it's gorgeous original deco interiors and exteriors intact, and the last time I visited (John Cleese triple bill including the Life Of Brian on Easter Sunday- kudos Orpheum!), there was a vintage pianist playing the grand piano in the lobby. I would love to see a silent movie thing here and I would bet money that they do them, it's that kind of place. Check out retro cinema Sundays- awesome and affordable triple bills that people dress up for. Old school wholesome entertainment, I love it.

They funnel you past the candy bar as you go up (no prices on display last time I went although this may have changed, which is annoying because I want to know how much I'm getting slugged for those sweet, sweet choc tops and gummi bears). Even though we had just travelled about 24 hours, we decided a movie would be a nice way to kill said time. I thought it would be a nice nap time but the movie was interesting and none of us slept. This theater is odd but interesting. You buy tickets at the concession stand. I wish I had tried the popcorn but I assumed I might not be awake so eating was out. The theaters are spread around the floor in different pockets of the area, so it's more like walking to a different shop. Even though it was a matinee, we were told it was mostly sold out and that we'd have to sit in the second row. This worried me but the person selling the tickets said it's where they prefer to sit and, again, I assumed I'd sleep so we agreed. We sat in theater 11 and lone behold, it wasn't going to be a problem because the screen is far away and there's a good amount of space between the front row and the screen. The other unique thing about this room was there was a large window. I've never seen this in a movie theater before and it was cool. Don't worry, the drapes, once closed, were nice and thick and let no light in. The seats were comfy and did manually recline. I only like to recline if there's a leg rest though so I didn't do that.

But the chairs were clean and comfy. I am not sure if I would want to pay full price for such movie experience...but their "award winning olive oil" popcorn is delish :)
