Are you ready to STEP BACK IN TIME to an age when men were dapper, women were genteel and cocktails…read morewere potent? Come then, friends, down to Golden Age Cinema. Attended their first birthday party last night and got to see some of the reasons this place rocks socks. Like the tiny, old-school cinema with all the original touches, like low-slung wooden chairs, green velvet walls, and the coup de grace, the unbelievable old film projectors that they found in the basement of the Paramount Building (when film reels had to be changed every 20mins during a movie). The main bar is low-lit and great date territory, the cocktails are inventive (maple pecan Old Fashioned, anyone?) and they do a small range of big-taste toasties. Oh and there's a secret mirrored performance stage hidden behind a remote-controlled curtain in the main bar.

I came here with a friend after he recommended it for a catch-up venue. The bar had a delicious-looking cocktail menu and a nice range of pre-cinema snacks to choose from. It's only a small venue but it's perfect for a couple of drinks and conversation before you head in to watch a film. The actual cinema is really cute. Older-style seating and a pretty small screen might put some people off... but I loved it. Overall Golden Age made me feel like Sydney is finally "growing up"... it's a venue less concerned with trying to look cool and more focused on being a quality, enjoyable option for anyone and everyone. I highly recommend it!

Chauvel Cinema offers a different perspective on traditional mainstream cinemas such as Event or…read moreHoyts. Chauvel Cinema attempts to brings it patrons back in time to an era where cinema was something we did only on special occasions. The cinema offers patrons wine and beers as opposed to large cokes. Their combo deal is popcorn and a beer or coffee with a slice of panettone cake. The lounge area is decorated beautifully complete with vintage movie posters and memories from the cinematic ghosts of the past. The cinema foyer is indeed beautiful, complete with gorgeous ceiling lighting. The cinema is in the historic Paddington Town Hall building and locals petitioned to keep this building open when it temporarily shut its door a few years back. The cinema has two rooms. They aren't as big as the other cinemas but if your after something different this is the place to go. They offer more arty films so think films that would be show at film festivals such as Cannes or Sundance.

The beloved Chauvel Cinema has lived in the former Paddington Town Hall ballroom since 1977. When…read moreit closed its doors in 2005, passionate cinema and independent cinema supporters bombarded council with pleas to rescue this bastion of Australian cinema. Just 7 months later the Chauvel reopened to a passion equivalent to if it had been closed for years. The Chauvel remains an important part of our cultural landscape, with the foyer refurbished innovatively using recycled toilet pipes as chandeliers (I like to think they are not literally recycled but remnants or off-cuts!) and a fabulous programme of new arthouse releases, film festivals, and cult cinema nights. They sometimes throw a band on in the foyer if its in keeping with the film that's screening. Grab a drink at the bar and sit on the balcony if you can get a spot, and thank the Palace cinema chain for restoring the Chauvel to its' former glory.

It houses 4 screens with plush seats and has double armrests. I like having double armrests. What is special about Paris Cinema is that Hoyts group has built an entire theatre for just fine art films from around the world. You can watch the best foreign films (No need to know the various languages as subtitles are of course included) from travelling international film festivals. I was invited to watch 13 Assassins a Japanese samurai film based on a true story. Having learnt a bit of Japanese I thought it would be easy to follow the movie. Thank God, for subtitles! If you are learning a foreign film, I highly recommend visiting Paris Cinema and watching a flick to learn more about the culture and art of that region. Cinema Paris is also host to Sydney's premier film festival. Parking is free for the first 2 hours everyday before 6 pm, but you can get your parking ticket validated at the movie counter for a general all day ticket as there's more to do and see at Entertainment Quarters (or EQ as its more popularly known.)

This movie theater was located just south of the Town Hall Station on George St. I came here to…read morecatch a movie before heading over to the airport to catch my flight home. I bought a ticket using one of the kiosks. Unfortunately, the movie didn't start until 3:30 pm. I had a couple of hours to pass and I didn't want to walk anywhere, so I found an open seat in front of the Ten Fourteen Bubble Tea shop and used the available free WiFi to pass the time. When it finally came time to go inside the theater, the employee told me that it was downstairs. He didn't point me in the right direction, so I thought maybe it was the stairs that I saw on the way in. That wasn't it as it led down to the pool hall and arcade. I went back up and pushed on a set of glass doors that led to another area which had the stairs leading down to the theater. The seat that I had picked was okay, but the theater seating was very outdated for movie theaters these days. I guess you get spoiled when you're used to those big comfortable recliner seats! At least the important thing was that the picture and sound was good.

I had a poor experience at Events Cinema George Street, Sydney, on Sunday 4 December 2022. Tickets…read morefor Gold Class were $44.00 each and two were purchased, totalling $88.00. There are three key problems: (1) There was an additional booking fee of around $6.00 for the two tickets (we used gift vouchers). Given the high ticket price, this is unreasonable. (2) Popcorn and drink were not included in the ticket price. Again, given the high ticket price and low cost for Event Cinema to provide popcorn and drink, this substantially lowers the value of purchasing a ticket. Also, Hoyts Cinemas offers popcorn and drink with its equivalent Lux tickets. We will probably go to Hoyts next time. (3) It was really difficult to order food via the website using the QR code. Given staff are available, they should help with the order rather than directing people to use the website/app. We didn't end up ordering any food. This is not a good idea. A very disappointing experience! This complaint was forwarded to Event Cinema's head office. No voucher or compensation was offered (despite asking), which, again, is very disappointing. This company needs to lift its game.
