The Ritz is something of an institution around Randwick. The cinema is still housed in its original heritage listed art-deco styled building, built from the ground up to be an art house cinema. With the new addition of a bar on the upper level, you'll feel comforted by the mod-coms that have been added over the years. Located in The Spot, Randwich, hidden away form the hustle of the city, and crowds of Bondi Junction, this place is a pleasant change from the crows that suffocate cinemas around Sydney. The only problem with a heritage-listed building is that some of the theatres are on the small side, as they cannot be changed to accommodate the advances in technology, such as wider screens & megaplex seating. I find this quite humble, as each cinema isn't an absolute copy of the other cinema's within the complex. The main cinema, theatre 1 is the largest, and the others are slightly smaller. This also makes the prices more affordable, especially on Tuesdays where it's $8.00 per ticket, which really makes a night out!

Do you remember when cinemas used to have a little more heart and soul - almost like they were spaces for creative expression instead of massive 3D Dolby explode your mind with Spidernan 6? Now I'm definitely not dissing advancements in technology - as a filmmaker I'm grateful for them.... it's just I don't love walking into a space which feels like a carbon copy of another space.... and mass cincemas feel like exactly that.... So, if you are wanting to find a more "old school" experience, I can recommend Ritz Cinema. this two story cinema space feels like the "good ole days" PLUS their prices are a lot more reasonable. Adults $13 or on Tuesdays $8.... doesn't that feel a little bit better than some of the other prices you pay? Upstairs there is also a bar, so if you feel like a little beverage before the film or want to analyse post screening you can chill upstairs with a glass of vino and become your own cinematic critic. I do love going here - it always feels like a more meaningful experience. So if you are going to see a movie in the Eastern Suburbs, why not support a local which seems to sincerely care about cinema?

First point, booze in the cinema without paying for Gold Class ticket prices! Excellent! 2nd point, this really is a classic cinema. The main screen has 2 tiers, not something you see much anymore. Obviously, most people don't really care about the architecture of the building that they're watching their movie in, but there is something quite cool about going to a cinema that looks like how you imagine a cinema should look, as opposed to the characterless multiplex that we're so used to nowadays. You'll also save a few dollars compared to a trip to Event or Hoyts with standard adult tickets costing $13 ($8 on Tuesdays). It may be lacking a little in certain areas - the sound and picture aren't quite as impressive as the big chains, but what it lacks in that respect (and to be fair, it's tricky to really tell unless you're a regular cinema goer) it definitely makes up for in its nostalgic experience of cinemas long gone!

It houses 4 screens with plush seats and has double armrests. I like having double armrests. What is special about Paris Cinema is that Hoyts group has built an entire theatre for just fine art films from around the world. You can watch the best foreign films (No need to know the various languages as subtitles are of course included) from travelling international film festivals. I was invited to watch 13 Assassins a Japanese samurai film based on a true story. Having learnt a bit of Japanese I thought it would be easy to follow the movie. Thank God, for subtitles! If you are learning a foreign film, I highly recommend visiting Paris Cinema and watching a flick to learn more about the culture and art of that region. Cinema Paris is also host to Sydney's premier film festival. Parking is free for the first 2 hours everyday before 6 pm, but you can get your parking ticket validated at the movie counter for a general all day ticket as there's more to do and see at Entertainment Quarters (or EQ as its more popularly known.)

Chauvel Cinema attempts to brings it patrons back in time to an era where cinema was something we did only on special occasions. The cinema offers patrons wine and beers as opposed to large cokes. The lounge area is decorated beautifully complete with vintage movie posters and memories from the cinematic ghosts of the past. The cinema foyer is indeed beautiful, complete with gorgeous ceiling lighting. The cinema is in the historic Paddington Town Hall building and locals petitioned to keep this building open when it temporarily shut its door a few years back. The cinema has two rooms. Just 7 months later the Chauvel reopened to a passion equivalent to if it had been closed for years. The Chauvel remains an important part of our cultural landscape, with the foyer refurbished innovatively using recycled toilet pipes as chandeliers (I like to think they are not literally recycled but remnants or off-cuts!) and a fabulous programme of new arthouse releases, film festivals, and cult cinema nights. They sometimes throw a band on in the foyer if its in keeping with the film that's screening. Grab a drink at the bar and sit on the balcony if you can get a spot, and thank the Palace cinema chain for restoring the Chauvel to its' former glory.

Even though we had just travelled about 24 hours, we decided a movie would be a nice way to kill said time. I thought it would be a nice nap time but the movie was interesting and none of us slept. This theater is odd but interesting. You buy tickets at the concession stand. I wish I had tried the popcorn but I assumed I might not be awake so eating was out. The theaters are spread around the floor in different pockets of the area, so it's more like walking to a different shop. Even though it was a matinee, we were told it was mostly sold out and that we'd have to sit in the second row. This worried me but the person selling the tickets said it's where they prefer to sit and, again, I assumed I'd sleep so we agreed. We sat in theater 11 and lone behold, it wasn't going to be a problem because the screen is far away and there's a good amount of space between the front row and the screen. The other unique thing about this room was there was a large window. I've never seen this in a movie theater before and it was cool. Don't worry, the drapes, once closed, were nice and thick and let no light in. The seats were comfy and did manually recline. I only like to recline if there's a leg rest though so I didn't do that.

Attended their first birthday party last night and got to see some of the reasons this place rocks socks. Like the tiny, old-school cinema with all the original touches, like low-slung wooden chairs, green velvet walls, and the coup de grace, the unbelievable old film projectors that they found in the basement of the Paramount Building (when film reels had to be changed every 20mins during a movie). The main bar is low-lit and great date territory, the cocktails are inventive (maple pecan Old Fashioned, anyone?) and they do a small range of big-taste toasties.
