There are 2 main things I look for in a cinema: - Comfortable seating - Speedy service when it comes to tickets and snacks Event cinemas in Bondi Junction is pretty good on both accounts. The seats are really comfy, the sound is big and I was there for a busy evening show and didn't have to wait too long for anything. Of course, the movie experience is all about the quality of the movie and who you are seeing it with. The cinema itself can't do much about either! What this one has in its favour though, is that it is really close to dozens of eateries, bars and other post-movie offerings. This makes it the ideal 'movie date' place. That's if you can handle Westfield in Bondi Junction of course!

It's well known that the cinemas at Westfield Bondi Junction are the biggest and the best in Sydney in terms of pre- and post-show dining options, screen size and the range of movies and session times available. But this rant is all about their Gold Class section. I went along on a date one night and found the whole thing really awkward. The seats are impressively massive, but the huge, non-moveable arm rests in between each chair aren't at all conducive to the expected mid-movie snuggle, so I felt like I was just watching the film by myself. They have a big range of menu items for dinner, which are brought to your seat by a waiter - we got an ice cream sundae, which tasted pretty good but in the dark you really couldn't tell what you were getting with the spoon and I dripped the chocolate sauce all down my top (not an abnormal level of messiness for me, but still) while the strong smell of fellow guests' pizzas pervaded the room. At $34 a ticket, I'll be sticking to their regular cinema service - where a student discount is still available.

It houses 4 screens with plush seats and has double armrests. I like having double armrests. What is special about Paris Cinema is that Hoyts group has built an entire theatre for just fine art films from around the world. You can watch the best foreign films (No need to know the various languages as subtitles are of course included) from travelling international film festivals. I was invited to watch 13 Assassins a Japanese samurai film based on a true story. Having learnt a bit of Japanese I thought it would be easy to follow the movie. Thank God, for subtitles! If you are learning a foreign film, I highly recommend visiting Paris Cinema and watching a flick to learn more about the culture and art of that region. Cinema Paris is also host to Sydney's premier film festival. Parking is free for the first 2 hours everyday before 6 pm, but you can get your parking ticket validated at the movie counter for a general all day ticket as there's more to do and see at Entertainment Quarters (or EQ as its more popularly known.)

Chauvel Cinema attempts to brings it patrons back in time to an era where cinema was something we did only on special occasions. The cinema offers patrons wine and beers as opposed to large cokes. The lounge area is decorated beautifully complete with vintage movie posters and memories from the cinematic ghosts of the past. The cinema foyer is indeed beautiful, complete with gorgeous ceiling lighting. The cinema is in the historic Paddington Town Hall building and locals petitioned to keep this building open when it temporarily shut its door a few years back. The cinema has two rooms. Just 7 months later the Chauvel reopened to a passion equivalent to if it had been closed for years. The Chauvel remains an important part of our cultural landscape, with the foyer refurbished innovatively using recycled toilet pipes as chandeliers (I like to think they are not literally recycled but remnants or off-cuts!) and a fabulous programme of new arthouse releases, film festivals, and cult cinema nights. Even though we had just travelled about 24 hours, we decided a movie would be a nice way to kill said time. I thought it would be a nice nap time but the movie was interesting and none of us slept. This theater is odd but interesting. You buy tickets at the concession stand. I wish I had tried the popcorn but I assumed I might not be awake so eating was out. The theaters are spread around the floor in different pockets of the area, so it's more like walking to a different shop. Even though it was a matinee, we were told it was mostly sold out and that we'd have to sit in the second row. This worried me but the person selling the tickets said it's where they prefer to sit and, again, I assumed I'd sleep so we agreed. We sat in theater 11 and lone behold, it wasn't going to be a problem because the screen is far away and there's a good amount of space between the front row and the screen. The other unique thing about this room was there was a large window. I've never seen this in a movie theater before and it was cool. Don't worry, the drapes, once closed, were nice and thick and let no light in. The seats were comfy and did manually recline. I only like to recline if there's a leg rest though so I didn't do that.

Are you ready to STEP BACK IN TIME to an age when men were dapper, women were genteel and cocktails…read morewere potent? Come then, friends, down to Golden Age Cinema. Attended their first birthday party last night and got to see some of the reasons this place rocks socks. Like the tiny, old-school cinema with all the original touches, like low-slung wooden chairs, green velvet walls, and the coup de grace, the unbelievable old film projectors that they found in the basement of the Paramount Building (when film reels had to be changed every 20mins during a movie). The main bar is low-lit and great date territory, the cocktails are inventive (maple pecan Old Fashioned, anyone?) and they do a small range of big-taste toasties. Oh and there's a secret mirrored performance stage hidden behind a remote-controlled curtain in the main bar.

The bar had a delicious-looking cocktail menu and a nice range of pre-cinema snacks to choose from. It's only a small venue but it's perfect for a couple of drinks and conversation before you head in to watch a film. The actual cinema is really cute. Older-style seating and a pretty small screen might put some people off... but I loved it. Overall Golden Age made me feel like Sydney is finally "growing up"... it's a venue less concerned with trying to look cool and more focused on being a quality, enjoyable option for anyone and everyone. I highly recommend it!
