Great local cinema that plays lots of independent films that you won't find anywhere else. If you join Club Dendy, movies are just $13 anytime and they offer preview screenings of new films before they are released to the general public. The recent refurbishment has made this my favorite local cinema. Good, comfy seats, and nice (if small) screening rooms. And, as an added bonus, the Dendy tends to attract more of a movie-lover crowd, so I don't end up with idiots sitting next to me texting and/or talking throughout the film. read more

We arrived at Dendy in Newtown a little bit late and bought our tickets from the Candy Bar. We tiptoed through the doors and took a seat up the back in one of their smaller cinemas. The film was 'Blessed' and like all Australian dramas it made you want to slit your wrists. So how do you review a cinema when the mood of the piece that you see there is so heavy that it surely will effect your opinions. The film was depressing, but the cinema was not. If you see a comedy, you're bound to leave with an upbeat attitude thinking, wow this cinema, absolutely hilarious! So let us look at the markable qualities within and try and ignore the child burning, man-slaughtering, sexually abused themes of the film we saw there. The cinema is quite small compared to its blockbuster equivalents. The cinema we watched 'Blessed' in, couldn't have sat more than one hundred and twenty people, this is a plus in my books. Less people, less chance of a phone call, a crumpled chip packet or an older person who assumes the cinema is a pantomime. "Look out behind you Batman! It's Heath!" The tickets are relatively cheap as they do not do 3D and thus do not feel the need to rob you for something so unnecessary as the third dimension. The range of films they get in is always interesting; foreign films, small Australian films and even blockbuster films from time to time. The main issue with Dendy in Newtown is the parking, but that goes for the whole of Newtown. Trains and busses are available or it's a pleasant stroll through a cafe and boutique rich suburb should you decide on walking. Let's be honest, a fresh aired walk is just what you'll need to clear your head of suicidal thoughts after experiencing the latest Australian familial drama. read more

Dendy cinemas are pretty cool! They're still independent, and slightly cheaper than the other big boys like Hoyts etc, and they offer a range of pop-theatre and independent productions. It's a great place to grab a glass of wine before heading into watch the movie, and even chatting to some of your fellow movie goers as they're often young and arty individuals. The older style theatre is more homely, and comfy in comparison to the corporate juggernauts called Cinema-plex-multi-3D-xPlode or something like that. read more

Although Dendy Cinemas are well known, I feel that the one in Newtown deserves a special mention for its choc tops, which are the best I've ever tasted. The chocolate coating is thick and cracks so satisfyingly when bitten in to, and the ice cream (rocky road my personal favourite) is wonderfully creamy. The whole, slightly scruffy atmosphere at the Dendy suits the bohemian vibe of Newtown, and it makes it a much more interesting and quirky experience than many of the larger, smarter cinemas in Sydney. All my life I have been searching for an independent cinema! Okay, so not really, maybe I exaggerate a bit (read: a lot). But I am always filled with a sense of pride for the owners of independent cinemas, they're just so... quaint. Dendy's in Newtown is very quaint indeed! Even their sign is reminiscent of old-school cinemas! It was very refreshing to see that they were playing movies I had never even heard of! Way to support the industry, guys! Dendy's is nestled between a cute little café, and a record store, both of which open directly into Dendy's, so feel free to grab a coffee and browse some records while you wait for your session to commence. The prices aren't at all unreasonable, and the staff are accommodating, if not exactly the friendliest. The theatres themselves are cosy and cute, unlike the vast theatres we're used to with Hoyts or Greater Union. I quite prefer the cosier, private feel of Dendy's. I think next time, I'll watch something with subtitles. read more

Ever since Caddyshack I see every movie that Bill Murray is in. St Vincent is only showing at a few places for some reason but Dendy at Newtown is one. Short bus ride from town and I'm in the smallest theatre I've ever been in but it's all good. Great theatre and Newtown is still cool. read more

I love this cinema. Its location, the variety of films that are played and of course the choc tops. The expresso choc tops are amazing! So are the Panna cotta, mint, maple walnut, and with changing flavours that come and go, these are so good, you can just tell that they make them there fresh on the day. Ok so enough about choc tops....The cinema is actually really nice and spacious in terms of leg room- especially in the big cinema. A huge variety of films and streamed theatre, along with all the big films too. A nice big coffee shop has been added on to the cinema making it a perfect place to meet friends. My only beef with the Dendy is that nobody likes to answer the phone! I left a bag behind one time and do you think I could get through to anyone! Then another time we had to get a refund on some tickets, there was no one I could get through to to even ask about how to go about it! Infuriating! However if you are not an idiot like me and buy tickets to the right film and don't leave stuff behind, then your dealings with the Dendy should be just dandy. read more

Despite lack of parking, we managed to get here after a small walk from Camperdown Memorial Park. I can't tell you how much I like Dendy theatres. They aren't as gee-whiz as the bigger commercial theatres, but there is something so nice about the smaller venues, with the glasses of wine (without needing to buy a different ticket type for it) and service that goes beyond what the commercial theatres can offer. Yes, the commercials offer all the amazing stuff, but there is something so relaxed and comfortable about Newtown (and Opera Quay) Dendy theatres that keeps me coming back. And it's not just the colourful Newtown personalities. But speaking of which, stopping in at one of the hundreds of cafes or restaurants in Newtown to watch life go by is a great way to spend time before a film. Highly recommended. Would be five stars if not for the lack of cleaning between sessions. read more

I've been here twice, once by myself and another time with friends. really clean and fun. I just walked right in and bought a ticket, popcorn and a drink with no hassle. quick and easy place to see a movie. my only comment would I wish the seats would lean back a little more. other then that, great leg space and super soft! read more

A welcomed hideaway from the hustle and bustle of King Street, Dende is small in size compared to other Sydney theatres. It's quaint more so than commercial, grassroots rather than ruthless. Apart from screening your ordinary cinematic experiences and Hollywood releases, Dende plays host to heaps of film festivals and is often a top-choice for fundraising screenings. I caught a flick from the Iranian Film Festival here and it felt like a group of friends simply got together for a show. And wine! Which you can sip on during all of the scenes, as there's a lovely little bar and lounge area in the front of the theatre. If summer heat is getting you down one afternoon, head on over to the Dende; a cinematic cornucopia with some seriously good A/C and even more seriously (ergh, does that work?) cheap wine. read more

Dendy is a great local cinema with reasonably priced tickets and free membership. It's nice being able to take drinks and food in, and they regularly have cool promotions and foreign films along with all the latest releases. I recently used a gift card for the Dendy Lounge however and it was not a 'premium' experience. The 'private bar' is just to the right of the main ticketing and entry area, so it's definitely not private. When we arrived we shared the area with a staff member who was being consoled by another for some reason, and another woman who was clearly just having a rest. No one asked if we wanted a menu or even checked our tickets. We ordered a quesadilla which came with chicken in it (we are vegetarians and chicken was not mentioned on the menu). The seats have a tiny tiny side table for food or drinks which is awkward and makes it really hard for the staff delivering in the dark. I haven't been to any gold class cinemas so I can't really compare, but I imagine they aren't anything like this! read more

Trying to pull your feet asunder from the popcorn-coated floors, as if a snotty Buzz Aldrin; buying cups of Coke the size of your torso, and immersing yourself in a pitch-black room alongside your Dad for a cinematic experience that will stay with you forever*. Or not**. If you're anything like me, you may have been left a little cold from recent excursions to the talkies. The magic wears off a little bit when you have to find a parking space, and then sell a kidney to get in. Not so with Dendy: I went on a Tuesday to see Behind the Candelabra, and got a ticket, a popcorn and drink for 20 bucks. They have a brilliant mix of very cosy, small cinemas (for your indy flicks) and the bigger ones for the more flamboyant performances (nothing like seeing Liberace's post-coital face in seventy-foot mega vision!) The whole experience is fantastic, and completely affordable. For films, this is the only place to go to. *Jurassic Park - "Clever girl!" **Sex and the City 2 - you four, not so much. read more

The Dendy Newtown cinemas are special for thee reasons: 1. They're in Newtown, and thus well-positioned to offer plenty of pre- and post-film food or entertainment. 2. They get many of the artier films. 3. Not many young kids. The big films will be in the big cinemas. If you want 3D and Super Mega Ear-Cracking Sound™ go to one of the big new Hoyts places. But if you just want to see comfortable, quality big-screen movies it's fine. The small films will be in the small cinemas. If you think that art films are better seen in small discerning groups of 40 people, then this is your place. This is the closest cinema to me, but it does me just fine. If I want to see a SFX eye-popping spectacle, I'll go to the IMAX. read more

Well set out small theatre in Newtown, features here are arthouse / independent, not usually mainstream cinema. You can grab a glass of wine before heading to watch a movie from the ticket counter. It can be a little confusing as to which cinema is what, if anything the numbering system of the separate theatres could be a little more clear. There are only about 4 movies ever on at the same time. The crowd is usually young but you do get a mixed bag some nights. The vibe is trendy, cinephile or not, you would be made to feel like a local at Dendy Newtown. read more

The Dendy has become one of my favorite parts of Newtown, if not Sydney in general. Coming from the States, the only theaters I know are the big chains (AMC and Regal), so the small theater (50ish people max?) style of Dendy is a welcome change. You feel like you are much closer to the theater and also get much larger and more comfortable seats. Couches are also available up at the front of the theaters if you so choose. This theater also has a more eclectic selection of movies than the Hoyt's Theater in Broadway, but this can come at the cost of some films. For example, Dendy did not skip out on something as big as Guardians of the Galaxy, but was not showing Maze Runner. I lean a little towards the larger scale releases so this is a small hassle, but it does not affect my experience when I am there. I cannot speak for the food or drinks, outside of the selection (which seems pretty good, but expensive as any movie theater is). The theater also has bargain tuesdays ($11 tickets), dinner and a movie deals with a few of the surrounding restaurants, and a discount for USYD Access students, ensuring I never have to pay more than $13 for a ticket, which is great. I've enjoyed every visit to the Dendy during my time at Sydney and recommend to anyone who can make it. read more

What other cinema in Sydney has the same line for selling chai lattes and chicken pies as the line you buy tickets in? I got there a little late for the session, and ten minutes later I'm still standing in line while people are buying their dinners! With another 10 minute wait likely. The movie would be a quarter over by the time I got in. Shape up Dendy. You run a movie house not a cafe. 2 Thumbs Down. You can rely on Dendy to always have something good on but the queues are getting out of hand. People routinely wait half an hour and even the line to pick up pre-ordered tickets can take ten minutes. I hope they're working on a new system! read more

Lovely cinema, very clean and comfortable. The cinema I was in was very small and intimate. Parking is always a nightmare in Newtown and it is $20 a ticket for the movies which is a bit expensive but I love the feel of it here and they have a good range of independent movies and a lot of show times to choose from. read more

The Dendy Cinema is a lot like the neighbourhood it's in - unpretentious and a little edgy. A bar where you can buy drinks to take into the cinema gives it that grown up feeling that just doesn't exist at the city centre multiplexes. There is always a good range of movies showing. read more

I enjoy going to this cinema more than I do going to the regular movie theater, mostly for their choice of movie screenings. My favorite movie that I saw here was the 80s classic 'The Neverending Story.' It's a decent sized cinema and you can purchase snacks as well as wine. read more

Good or bad staff can make or break a business and in this case it was bad bad bad. My experience was to see "head office" staff standing behind the counter where I was waiting to be served, when I stepped forward the young woman sneered at me and said "I don't work here" well you are behind the counter and passing over drinks!! oh no that was to her "head office" friends she was not going to serve the public. She then TOLD ME, not asked to get in line and wait to be served by the one woman who was working who herself could not have been less interested in her customers she just looked at me with a blank expression when I complained that what just happened to me was rude. A nice clean new cinema but most of the staff need an attitude adjustment. One male staff member did seem to care so maybe there is some hope for them. As a local I know my area - once you annoy people they don't go back and word travels quickly.... Head Office staff - great example - not!!!!! PS: Just finished speaking to a rep at Head Office, the lady said all the right things and wanted to send me two free tickets (standard) which I declined. I don't believe for one minute she will do anything about these people as she didn't even bother to ask me for my name let alone a telephone number. read more
