An absolutely wonderful family event!! There were 10 of us, ranging in ages from 6 to 70 and it was a hit with all!! The bean beds are a must. They are definitely worth the extra $9.00 for the comfort. A blanket will do, but the bean bed forms to your body and elevates your head for great viewing. We didn't use any of the concessions because you are welcome to bring your own food and beverage. The night turned out to be a movie with a picnic!! The bonus was the pre-sunset bat show, so arrive early. Another reason to get an early start is to get a good parking spot. Shhh don't tell the others but you're my favourite outdoor cinema, Moonlight...You may not have a fancy location or a gourmet menu like some of the others but you have parking, nice surroundings, sufficient facilities and most of all, enough space for me to spread out and have a proper picnic and frolic. Watching a movie at Moonlight does require a little prep because onsite food and beverage is limited. So grab a few nibbles, grog, blankets and cushions and you're set for a good night out. The place is so chilled, I've never seen a double air mattress for 2 at an outdoor cinema until now (genius if you think about it). Sitting on anything higher than a beach chair is frowned upon unless you're at the back, but the number of space available with clear view of the screen is ridonculous so you'll still get to enjoy your movie if you want to bring your recliner. But wait, there's more! They're doing $10 tickets for cinebuzz members (2 tix per member) at the mo so you don't need to restrict your movie dates to Tuesdays!! read more

An idyllic location, hundreds of bats migrating serenely overhead as the sun sets, trees, grass, lots of room, and - best of all - BYO food and booze! Sure, you can pay $9 for a beer if you want, but just bring your own, it's heaps better. Even if you arrive late you'll still get a great seat, in fact there aren't any bad seats, the natural grass amphitheatre is tailor-made for movies, something the original park planners no doubt planned for when they designed it, years before movies were even invented. read more

A profoundly shitty way to spend an evening. Don't mistake this for the St George Open Air Cinema kids! This is its poorer, dirty faced and dishevelled cousin. Even if the night is warm and clear, once the sun dips below the horizon and the dew sets in you're in for a cold, wet and uncomfortable time. To have anything close to a comfortable experience, you will need to bring the following: - Wine, food, iPad etc. to keep you entertained for the long wait between arrival and the movie starting - A plastic-lined picnic rug to keep the dew out - Large cushions to keep you upright (or small chairs, but they do advise to keep your chair down for the movie) - Long pants and a waterproof/wind breaking jacket, no matter how hot the day was - A blanket - Water and a thermos of hot chocolate or tea - Aeroguard - Wet wipes (for the bat poo) So, in all, similar to camping. And, just like camping, if it rains (even a little), your preparation is all for nought. Moonlight Cinema have a very strict policy about rainouts - unless it is a steady, torrential downpour, there are no cancellations. Even if it rains all day so the ground is soaked, and rains in patches throughout the entire movie, rendering you a cold, sodden, shivering mess, there are no refunds, no cancellations, no changed tickets and certainly no communication from customer service. On top of everything Moonlight Cinema is located in the least accessible part of Centennial Parklands. If you are within walking distance of the Cleveland St/Moore Park entrance, don't think you are within walking distance of Moonlight. Belvedere Amphitheatre is closer to Bondi Junction than Surry Hills, and a fairly substantial walk from Bondi Junction and Edgecliff train stations. Well, with all your camping equipment and setup, you'll probably want to drive anyway. Everybody thinks exactly the same thing, so you'll arrive with the only parking space a good walk away. Well, you'll walk off your Maltesers whatever happens. So if you love the misery and discomfort of camping, the loud asshole ambiance of a suburban cinema, and the obscured views and inaudible audio of Tropfest or Symphony in the Domain, then Moonlight Cinema combines it all in one really bad way to spend an evening. Save it for Open Air, which has set seats, a beautiful backdrop and a much better crowd. Edit: Don't think that Gold Grass will buy you anything better. It is merely a part closer to the screen, all the same preparations apply. read more

It's like a drive-in... without the driving part. If you've ever thought, "It sure would be nice to watch a movie under the stars, this is the place for you! Sessions are on in certain seasons, and the next one begins in the first week of November (2011), so head down to Centennial Park, and purchase your ticket at the booths! Although, if it's a particularly popular movie, you may want to/have to purchase tickets online, or get there really early and beat the crowd. They have a dinner/snack bar, but for a more authentic picnic-movie experience, I suggest bringing your own food. Sandwiches and wine, perhaps! It has all the potential to be a perfectly romantic evening (as long as you don't forget your insect repellent!). I went here with a date to watch The King's Speech... and the grounds were quite crowded indeed! Perhaps you'd prefer to shell out a little extra cash and get a VIP ticket so that you can sit closer to the screen, and further away from the commoners. On that particular night, the screening was charmingly interrupted by some particularly playful possums who decided that racing up and down the trees in the silence would be a fun thing to do. You can choose to bring a picnic blanket (in which case cushions are also a good idea), or you can purchase bean-bag chairs at the grounds for around $7. Happy viewing! read more

As far as outdoor cinemas go, nothing tops the Moonlight Cinema. We were lucky enough to get Gold Grass tickets for the premiere of Wyrmwood, but arrived quite late because of an unavoidable mishap after work. The staff were friendly and polite in quickly directing us to our Gold Grass reserved beanbags. We had the option to BYO or purchase alcohol there and grab a bite to eat before the movie starts. Excellent viewing (weather dependent of course) and a unique and wonderful cinema experience. Something about the fresh air and drifting from sunset into trailers and opening credits just makes it an amazing experience. 10/10 would recommend. read more

I've been there once before and had a better experience than this recent visit. Went to watch the movie paper planes and we thought we got a good spot, but as people poured in, there were a few people who brought camping chairs that decided to sit a few spaces in front of us. That sort of blocked our view. And during the screening, there were people in front of us who were getting up and moving about (a few kids too) and that was annoying. But also during the course of the movie, there were a few people in the audiences who had too much too drink and were giggling and talking quite loudly, disturbing everyone else. I guess that's what happens at outdoor cinemas, you never know what you're gonna get. read more

It's that time of year when I'm given a season pass for Christmas and I know the next 2 months will be filled with balmy nights under the stars watching movies. They play the perfect mix of cult classics and new releases to satisfy even our fussiest movie going mates. Hiring bean bags and buying food/drinks is the easiest way to go but we love the challenge of battling with chairs and an esky so we BYO. Watch out for the occasional doggy night where you can (as the name suggests) bring your best fury mate to the movies! read more

We came here on Australia Day to watch the classic "the Castle". It was fun! We took a picnic, rug and cushions. Some of us hired some bean bags which were apparently very comfy. It's nothing glamorous, but it's always nice to be outside on summer nights. read more

Bring a blanket (no tall lawn chairs allowed - they might block the view), make sure to print up your tickets in advance to avoid the line, and enjoy the evening stroll through Centennial Park :) read more

As summer creeps into Sydney I can't help but be excited about the return of the outdoor cinemas. There are a couple about town but the original Moonlight Cinemas is one of my favourites. Set on the lawn at Centennial Park the big screens sits as the bottom of a gentle slope screening new release and cult classic films. You can BYO everything (including alcohol) but my tip is to splash out on the bean beds ($7 with a $10 refundable deposit) which are very comfortable to recline back and relax on plus grab yourself some wine and cheese from the on site caterers. Beware that not every night in summer is balmy and breezy, there is the odd occasion when it will bucket rain in the middle of your movie, but you will get a voucher for another screening of the film you're watching. I love Moonlight cinema. Being able to sit under the stars, watching a movie and snacking and drinking to your hearts content with BYO goodies is just magical. I particularly like watching the nightly migration of bats between Centennial Park and the Domain at sunset before the movie starts. The last time I went we sat in Gold Grass which gets you a dedicated bean bag front and center to the screen and 'table' service for food and drinks from the bar. read more

Disappointing experience. Moonlight got booed at the end of ... or i meant to say mid movie. Booked a month in advance to watch star wars. Weather was horrible all day with storm expected in the evening but what do we know they still opened the gates. We got overpriced and tasteless food and set down. The lawn was really wet though. Please note that the sound system is not appropriate at all for a blockbuster. Than the worst part - mid-movie the screen switches off and they shut down due to weather. No refund. read more
