10 stars. Saul and his crew gutted and rebuilt my kitchen, and turned my laundry room into a second…read morebathroom. It was a pleasure to work with him from start to finish. Before we'd even signed the contract, he spent hours at my home going over details and possibilities. They came early, worked late, often six days a week. They got things done when they said they would, and came in on budget, which was a miracle considering some of the surprises we found in the walls. They kept the rest of the house clean and tidy, and finessed things with the neighbors when needed. But ultimately, it's all about the finished product, and we LOVE our kitchen and bathroom. The workmanship is impeccable, and we've received endless compliments on how great it looks. I got Saul's name from a friend who has had him build a roof deck, refinish a kitchen, add a bedroom, and rejuvenate a fireplace, and he and his wife also have had nothing but praise.

Salgo Constructions (owner Saul Gonzalez): AVOID!!!! AVOID!!! Hire at your own risk…read more Reasons: 1) Workmanship: I had my master bathroom renovated, and the finished product is a huge disappointment. At first glance, it looked ok, but closer inspection revealed flaws with the renovation. For one thing, the tiles are crooked and not spaced evenly. The tile work in public bathrooms are way better than what they've done. Secondly, the touch-up for the scratches and dents that they inflicted on the walls were pretty shabby. Now my bathroom looks very amateurish. I used to like my bathroom, but now it gives me a heartache. It certainly will bring down the value of my house. 2) Untrustworthiness: The workers somehow knew every single nook and cranny of my house. They only needed to go from the garage to master bathroom, but somehow they decided to explore every inch of my house and even opened up some closets and drawers. First, the owner's brother (who happened to be one of the workers) denied my allegations. He only confessed when I found my kitchen knife in one of my spare bedrooms one day. He claimed that he used my kitchen knife because he had forgotten his cutting knife. Now, why would he be using my kitchen knife for his construction work? 3) Unprofessionalism: His final invoice included extra work and charges that I had not approved. I understand that unanticipated challenges with any renovation project, but he neglected to tell me what they were and how much over budget it would cost me. He proceeded without my permission, and decided to add extra charges to the final invoice. I even sought advice from a lawyer, who concluded that I was not responsible for those extra charges because he did not provide me with a new work order. 4) Lack of accountability: They installed a new shower mixer and shower head for the stall. Not sure what they did besides turning off the water main, but my plumbing was never the same afterwards. The owner refused to take accountability. I had to hire my own plumber to get the problem fixed. Here's my rebuttal to the contractor's response: "Installed sheetrock for FREE; Installed shower stall for FREE; Installed insulation for FREE; Customized the shower tiles for shower pan and shower ceiling for FREE." These were all part of the work that needed to be done for renovating the shower stall, as agreed upon in the original contract. It is unclear to me why the contractor considered them as a favor to me and that they were done for "FREE." That was basically the majority of the work that I contracted him to do. "Installed a new shower drain for FREE." I was not provided with a new work order for a new shower drain and not informed until the work was completed. "Provided a NEW medicine cabinet for FREE." One of the workers burned a hole into my existing medicine cabinet and made it no longer usable. Therefore, the contractor is responsible for the replacement. "Gave you $1000 off the original price." The contractor and I negotiated down the original bid by $960. Salgo Construction's bid was actually higher than others that I had received. I don't see it as a "discount." It was part of the negotiation process before we mutually agreed on the total cost of the renovation. "Accepted a partial payment of the final invoice." I made the full payment according to the original contract. As stated above, per an attorney's advice, I am not responsible for extra costs/labor without full disclosure and a new work order.

Andrew emailed me even before I reached out to him, he said he had insurance and Cole Hardware is a reputable outlet, so I hired Andrew for some very basic work around my home-- patching some nicks in walls and re-painting the spots, tightening some handles, etc. Nothing major. Hardly hard work for someone who has a vocation if contraction. Andrew asked that I pay on the spot. So I did, against my better judgement (I usually prefer to wait a day so I can see the paint when it dries, so to speak). No more than 5 days later a latch on a closet he worked on broke. I've had that closet for almost 5 years with no major problems the very same piece he works on breaks a few days after. Uh huh. When I asked him about this he said something to the effect of "these things break, probably just past its prime." Except... it's lasted for 4 years and only broke when you futzed with it. Did he offer to find me the piece and fix it? Nope. Oh well. I hired hi for some other stuff a few weeks later-- more patching and painting of walls. He again asked to be paid on the spot, which I did. The next day I looked at the work he did and it looked terrible-- it looked worse than before. I promptly called Andrew asked him to cash my check pending him coming back to fix his work and do a satisfactory job. Let's just say that he went from zero to very defensive in an instant. Numerous calls and emails ensued that bordered on ridiculous (shouldn't your insurance cover shoddy work?) He finally came back, agreed his work had been crap. Still, his repairs sucked too! And, now, every time I look at that wall I sigh and think "I hope no one else hires this guy for their home if they care about it at all."

One assumes that if someone has a contractor's license you're going to get the finest quality work and that these workers are capable of doing whatever project they are hired to do.
