Unlike other reviews, my family's experience with Rainbow Terrazzo was far from pleasant. Initially, I tried calling them numerous times to schedule an estimate for my relative's exterior, terrazzo stairs that had water damage and were beginning to sink. Absolutely no one answered or returned my calls. The following week, someone with their business finally followed up and scheduled a date to look at the stairs. The gentleman came out to meet my relative and assured he would send a written estimate in "a few days." Days and days went by with zero communication from Rainbow Terrazzo or any formal estimate. My relative then followed up with the company. They told her that another contractor associated with her number had called in, saying they had the job, and essentially refusing to give a written estimate. This was all very strange and didn't make any sense, since we only received an estimate from one other company and did not give the job to anyone... My sister decided to call the company to clarify directly. She spoke with Manuel who had the same story about this other contractor, yet refusing to share this person's name. He was incredibly dismissive, defensive, and rude with my sister- brushing off her questions as to when we would receive an estimate of any kind and trying to end the call as quickly as possible. This all seemed incredibly off-base. Either- Rainbow Terrazzo simply didn't want the job due to the condition of the stairs and their required work, refused to say that outright, and fabricated a story in its place... Or, someone did call them with this false claim, trying to sub out the job for their own personal gain, and Rainbow Terrazzo openly disregarded the actual homeowner's side and went with this other, random contractors position. Either way, it was very shady and off-putting. Instead of believing the actual word of the homeowner, Manuel took the position of some nameless, outside party with no basis. Safe to say, we wouldn't choose to give any business to this company at this point and will not be choosing to work with them in the future. It was outright disrespectful and a total waste of time all around. I can't speak to the work that Rainbow Terrazzo does, but this experience clearly shows how mismanaged and unprofessional this company is. They do not communicate openly, believe or make up blatant lies, and somehow think it's okay to speak to you in a rude manner. Exterior stair maintenance and repair is common in SF Sunset homes. I have one of those giant panoramic windows and it is pretty cool watching the big ferocious rains come through. What was not cool was watching it rain in my closet. My closet is located under my exterior front stairs which has been neglected for many years. Embarrassing layers of dirt, loose caulk, and cracks made it their home. I even had some cute little baby trees sprouting out the corners of my stairs. This was not good. And the closet was not happy being leaked on. I interviewed four contractors and they all said the same thing. Tear down the stairs and build new stairs. The estimates for this work were set to the tune of $30k - $70k. Now each time it rained, I felt a sudden pang of fear. I don't know about you, but do people actually have this much money sitting around in an emergency stairway fund? One of the contractors mentioned that I have terrazzo stairs and it is very common for them to leak. All I heard was the magic word, "terrazzo." I went into Google research mode, plugged in the magic word into Yelp and found Rainbow Terrazzo! And in enters Sal. He patiently answered all my questions and gave me a good overview of the work to be done. I did not need to have a stairway fund to work with Rainbow Terrazzo because Sal's proposal was not in the quintuple digits of dollars. He is very busy, but was able to fit me in before he goes on his well deserved vacation. He even moved the schedule to an earlier date because he saw rain was coming. The team was punctual and cleaned up after themselves each day. After two days, my stairs were cleaned, grinded, caulked, sealed, and refinished to like new. With a five year warranty, I am so happy that I don't have to fear the rain. An hour after Rainbow Terrazzo left, I already got my first compliment on my new looking stairs by my mail carrier. After living in my home for 12 years, I had to face that parts of my home was falling apart. I was very worried about the costs and Sal offered me some good advice and recommendations that made me feel better. He is a friendly, caring, honest person and takes pride in his work. I talked to over 20 different contractors since last August trying to fix and paint my house and Sal is by far the best one of them all. While I think Steve C. below provided an excellent and comprehensive review, I feel compelled to add my own experience to the list of very satisfied customers. I rarely (if ever) write reviews but that's because I rarely encounter a contractor like Sal from Rainbow Terrazzo. Our saga is much like others and starts with the dismal, crumbling Terrazzo stairs on our 100 year old Victorian in Potrero Hill which after 10 years of averting our eyes and ignoring them, finally required a decision and while everyone else who saw them said they could not be fixed and would be a total tear down, Sal was unfazed. After explaining with complete confidence the detailed process for repairing and reinforcing the underside of the stairs, building new cinder block stringers caped with 4x12 timbers wrapped in rubber under each step, then explaining the very labor intensive process for cutting out all the cracks in the terrazzo, filling with matching color mix, grinding, sealing etc. we were sold. That said, you would have to have seen the sorry shape of our stairs to appreciate the magnitude of the job as literally every tread and riser were completely cracked with missing chunks of terrazzo and he also had to contend with a handyman special concrete patching job I put on 7 years ago. In the end, we avoided having to deal with the much more disruptive teardown/rebuild, and have our stairs looking practically like new. Aside from the actual repair and great results, Sal and his crew were incredibly professional, friendly, and polite. They showed up on time or early, worked like crazy, cleaned up and even washed the house down after they were done to clean up the dust from grinding. They are a family business and everyone on the crew is part of his family and his wife also works with the crew and specializes in mixing/matching the terrazzo. Sal is one of those rare old school guys who's all about honor and pride of workmanship. He pays attention to every detail and like other reviewers, I was impressed with his going above and beyond to locate and fix leaks in the siding and sealing areas that most others would consider not part of their job. After years of watching my 135 year old stairs slowly break apart and finally give way, I had to do something. I had bids for multi thousands to replace them, but then Sal came by. "I can fix them like new" he said. "I have been doing this all my life. As a young man, I learned terrazzo from the Old Italians". His price was right on so I said we should do it. Well, he was marvelous, efficient and very polite, and often funny. He worked every day with his crew once the job commenced and he stayed, every day, until it was completed and really beautiful. So during a recent rainstorm, I took a look under the stairs and noted that there was a leak again and being a big upset, gave Sal a call and that perhaps something was missed when he originally repaired the stairs. He came by a few days later and he helpfully pointed out that it wasn't an issue of the stairs themselves, but rather, a small portion of the siding of the house next to the stairs that had cracked - thus allowing water to leak through. He then proceeded to patch up the hole in the siding AND seeing how distressed I originally was, put another coat of repellant on the stairs themselves. This was done without charge. I don't write many reviews. And the ones here so far have done a great job of describing Sal and Margot's (his wife's) great work. I have contracted Sal for now 15 years for various jobs. He became known in my childhood neighborhood of the Richmond District because of his great terrazzo and general contracting work. Two things if you're a potential customer I'd say: 1) he's always taken each job personally--he spends time to speak to every customer in a way where he would not want to let down his best friend, and 2) he is very positive and creative--he looks for ideas to fix the problem, not ways why it can't be done. He offers a personal level of service that is above and beyond that you don't see often anymore, and he's done it consistently for 15 years I've hired him. On background, it is all about family for him. His two sons were taught by him when they were younger and in the 1990s all of them would come out to work on jobs. Today, his two sons, whom he is very proud of, work in their own contracting businesses. You wouldn't know if from his face or energy, but Sal has been doing terrazzo for 35 years, and construction for almost 50. He's a good guy. read more

I own an Edwardian 2-Flat Building with Terrazzo steps in Noe Valley with granite porch landing that had not been touched in over 112 yrs. Our stairs were half crumbled and they needed to re-build the stairs and re-do the terrazzo. OMG. I have never had such a great experience with a contractor in my life. Sal and his team were absolutely professional in every sense. We needed a complete restructuring of the support under our front stairs which we had left for far too long. Sal came the same day we called and evaluated the situation. That evening we got his bid. The next day, we accepted, and by 3 pm he was there to begin cleaning out the work area. The next day, his crew was there to begin work. He has worked for four straight days and will finish in one more day. I am so thankful and overjoyed with the results so far. He completely replaced all the dry rot, patched, sanded, re-paved our landings and when it's all done, will completely refinish our stairs. I couldn't be happier.
