Service makes me hesitant to return. Interior was nice, old-school restaurant vibes, but didn't look completely dated or anything like some places. We got served some good old fashioned chips and salsa, always a favorite. I think I saw a piece of mango floating in it but I could be wrong, as it did not taste sweet. Tasted quite peppery so maybe it was a bell pepper. I have no idea. Salsa did have a different taste than the usual onion, garlic, tomato, cilantro so I'm unsure what they do here. Chips were fine, not hot and fresh but had a nice crunch to them. Most Mexican restaurants I've been to have this similar combination option and I saw their menu had a combo with three items: one enchilada, one chile relleno and one crunchy taco. I thought, awesome, I get to try one of each and see how I like 'em. I normally get a taquito with my meal so I asked the waiter if it was ok to order this combo with a taquito or flauta in place of the crunchy taco. He said no. Not, "I'm sorry for the inconvenience but we don't allow substitutions, thank you for understanding, etc." Just, no. Ok...? Never been to a place that cared much about me subbing a taco for a taquito, unless the plates are preassembled with a crunchy taco, which doesn't make any sense. Thought that was a little off-putting but onward... We ordered the potato taquito appetizer that was listed on their menu. Plate arrives and it's huge - which made sense since it cost $18 - but they were all visibly beef taquitos. I happened to be dining with my vegetarian friend, hence the ordering of potato taquitos, so we kindly informed the waiter that we ordered potato and these were all beef taquitos. Waiter confusingly indicated that these were potato taquitos and we kind of glanced at each other like... uhhh, there's clearly shredded beef in there sticking out, so we pointed it out. Waiter looks again, points to one specific taquito on the plate and says, "Well, that one is potato." The waiter eventually clarified that the taquitos were actually beef with potato. I politely informed him that since my friend is vegetarian and the menu didn't specify beef in the taquitos, we couldn't accept or eat the dish. The waiter was pushy about it and suggested we just take them home and eat the leftovers. Dude no. I ordered potato taquitos and we're only two people, and this was a massive plate of around 15 taquitos. I don't have an air fryer or oven at home, either, so I really have no proper way of reheating and I'm just one person. Either way, none of this was something I felt was worth arguing over. Just take the friggin taquitos back. We sat there uncomfortably for a bit and waited for our main meals to arrive. Got my combo, and it was honestly pretty good. Flavors were fresh and vibrant, even the taco was good although I was bitter it was a half-moon fried piece of tortilla with beef instead of a rolled fried piece of tortilla with beef. :( It's a joke, chill. We finished and the waiter brought out the bill. We quickly left our cards for payment and in clear view for the waiter to pick up so we could leave and digest by walking at the mall or something, but he never came. He walked by a few times, cards were sticking out... still nothing. After 30 minutes, my friend says she thinks we have to pay at the front. Would've been nice to know about 30 minutes ago. Paid at the front, left, and I won't be coming back. Food was actually pretty good but it unfortunately did not outweigh the lack of service and overall experience of eating here. Been here multiple times, it's my mom favorite restaurant :) Authentic Mexican food with reasonable prices and great portions. Asada was well marinated and tasted delicious. Burrito was perfectly covered with sauce and cheese. Service was excellent and there is plenty of parking in the lot. Highly recommend if you are in the mood for Mexican food. Restaurant has nice decor such as Mexican murals and design making you feel the authentic once you step inside. read more

Ray's Tepeyac sells thick, heavy portions with speedy service. The food's flavors are distinct and prominent, but it also tastes "mushy" like something left underneath a food lamp for too long. Currently, Ray's Tepeyac successfully captures the taste of well-cooked buffet food. (Quick Note: 3.99% Service Charge Applied to All Card Sales. Bring Cash.) I arrived on a weekday (around 1:50PM). The location had a large amount of elderly customers. I was immediately seated. Each table received complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were lukewarm, but its flavorful salsa was cold. In addition, the tap water tastes very off-putting; its water tastes like old melted ice. I ordered the Shredded Beef Burrito (Lunch Special - $10.95) and the Pescado Al Mojo De Ajo ($18.95). Service is fast! Both huge dishes arrived piping hot in six minutes and 47 seconds. The Shredded Beef Burrito is extremely big. The burrito is doused with tangy sauce and melted cheese with a dollop of sour cream. The burrito is stuffed with boiled, mushy beef. Thankfully, its sauce adds needed flavor to the bland burrito. The Pescado Al Mojo De Ajo had a lovely, addictive garlic and buttery flavor. Unfortunately, its strong taste is used to mask the thin, small, soft, mushy fish. Its rice successfully rekindled memories of Mexican rice, but it's very mushy. The beans are satisfying, but it's finely mashed and wet. Thankfully, its flavor is strengthened with its generous melted cheese. If I had two words to describe this dish, it would be "soft" and "hot." Service is adequate. In the beginning, I was helped quickly. However, once I received my food, I rarely saw my server. I had to eventually "wave down" a staff member to get my check. Staff moves like a fast food restaurant. After receiving the check, customers pay at the front counter. Regarding ambiance, Ray's Tepeyac is a charming location. I enjoyed the wall's artwork. The location is also clean and well-ventilated. High-energy Mexican music echoes throughout this location. The furniture looks dated like an old diner, but it's functional and well-maintained. Overall, Ray's Tepeyac serves huge portions. And it's a decent option for a budget meal. If deciding to visit Ray's Tepeyac, enter with low expectations. 3.8 out of 5 read more

I come here for the chile Colorado and today it just wasn't up to par. The meat was a bit tough and dry somehow and tasted like it had been defrosted and was a bit bland, but the sauce was very salty. Even the rice was a bit dry and flavorless. I used to go to this restaurant all the time when I was younger with my mom and dad and it brought up so many memories for me. I got the Pescado Al Mojo De Ajo which was a very garlicky and buttery. The tortillas (both flour and corn) are warm and perfect, don't know if they make them there or not but they are spot on. I'm about 88 percent sure that Ray's Tepeyac is in no way related to the El Tepeyac mini-empire that began on Evergreen Avenue in Boyle Heights. Still, on the off chance that the food and service were as good, I brought my parents here. I didn't realize quite how far from Whittier it is. The food is excellent. It's exactly what I have come to expect from sit-down Mexican restaurants in Southern California--and which, for some reason, is so difficult for places in other regions to imitate. The value is also good. You get a lot of food for your buck. The service is excellent. My dad loves chatting it up with servers, busser, hosts, whomever in a restaurant he can get a laugh out of. He couldn't get enough of our server here. They were making fun of each other in a very playful way almost right away, and good humor meant that he was quick to refill our water and chips, and our food came out right away. As I said, Ray's Tepeyac is a quite a haul from Whittier. That might not mean anything to you, but if you are visiting from Whittier or anywhere closer to Downtown L.A., I don't know that it's worth the drive. The restaurant itself is cute and dark and decorated festively. The booths are tiny, so if you're on the larger side and if you have a choice, ask to sit at a regular table. The parking lot is weird and has quite an incline. If you're bringing someone with mobility issues, drop them off right at the front of the restaurant before you park. read more

First and last time visitors. Food was not good whatsoever and I actually became pretty Ill thirty minutes after I had dinner at this restaurant. I had severe stomach cramps for three hours and vowed to never return to this restaurant. Food was very bland and no taste, my chicken enchiladas were very dry and the beans appeared and had a taste of being overcooked. The fish soup had no taste and the fish was rubbery as though I could bounce it off the ground. My daughter took two bites from her cheeseburger and she was done. She did not like the thousand island-like sauce placed in the burger. Three meals, $65.00 plus a $9.00 tip as the waiter initially rushed us to order but as our visit went on, he actually ended up being a nice, hard-working man.
