Welcome Home We escaped the storm in Hawai'i and after a fun filled Spring Break week at Disneyland, my son's one and only request was to eat at Casa Moreno!! Thankfully we were able to detour from Anaheim on our way to LAX. Special shout out to the dedicated staff who graciously accommodated us and allowed us to sneak in a bit early in order to fulfill our cravings and still make our flight on time. I grew up going to Casa Moreno since the original spot in 1995, you can say it's home for me. My kids have therefore grown up visiting it every chance we get when visiting our family in the area. We generally all share and pass our plates around in true family style because we can never decide which all-star traditional plates to order. This time, the kid's quesadilla, 3 Amigos, Steak Fajitas, Chicken Flautas and Machaca made the cut. The look on my son's face when the sizzling platter was headed his way was just as magical as seeing him hug Chip and Dale. Every single bite warmed our hearts and filled our homemade food starved bodies. Casa Moreno is undeniably the greatest Mexican food that Los Angeles has had to offer for over 30 years. Their traditions span throughout three generations and the second you crunch those warm chips covered in their "Chilanga" salsa, you'll be hooked. The best part is that my local family is always there and pleased to come sit with us. We are all unfortunately spread apart across the country but Casa Moreno will always be the place that brings us together. Our shared experiences and memories there always make it HOME. We walked in on a very busy day! All the indoor tables were full. Police Explorers (a lot of them) were just leaving as we walked in! The staff couldn't clear an area fast enough so we could be seated... smiling and genuinely friendly as they did. The restaurant was busy but not so busy that we couldn't hear eachother talk. This amazing place offerings is out of this world. Surprised I have never know of this place. The menu was so exciting. So many traditional Mexican cuisine that is normally not available unless you are in the country of origin. Los compadre tacos was the star of the plate. The tacos was savory with beautiful combination of textures from the chorizo and chicharrones with the wonderful salsa verde with perfect spice. Honestly, this was a pretty frustrating experience. We were there for about three hours total, and it took around an hour just to get our food. When it finally came out, the order was wrong, and the food itself was just okay nothing special. Our server never checked in on us, and it took way too long just to get the check, which made leaving feel like another long wait. What made it even more frustrating is that the restaurant wasn't even half full, so the long waits didn't make sense. Overall, the price definitely didn't match the food or the service. I ordered the alambre and the meat was very dry and bacon burnt. The chicken milanesa just tasted like a Dino nugget. Service also lacked! Sat outside and our server never checked up on us. I ordered flour tortillas and they brought me corn. Additionally wanted to ask for salsa on the side and got tired of waiting so just grabbed some Tapatío from a nearby table. Got here during rush hour. Got seated promptly, sat down got our menus, salsa and chips are on point freshly made, Susan took care of us and came back and asked if we wanted some drinks. She proceeded to get the drinks and was not long at all. The ambiance is more intimate and there is also a bar area with stools for additional seating. There are also tables in the middle space for additional seating and for large groups. Outdoor seating also available. Parking is not an issue since it is a 2 hour parking limit on some of the parking spots. We ordered caldo tlalpeno and a pescado al mojo de ajo. Two beers. Food is great. Definitely worth trying out. Love Casa Moreno. This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant. Every dish is delicious. My favorites are the alambre, mixiotes, carnitas, and asada mulas. Although I tend to stick to my usuals whenever I do decide to venture out and try something new it never disappoints. I really like the overall ambience and design of the place as well. The Staff is always very friendly and helpful. One last thing I have to mention is this place has the best margaritas in town (try one with casa noble tequila. It's perfect). The service was horrible and Monica was rude! I took 4 sips of my soup and it I let the server know that it was very spicy and I could not enjoy it. I ordered takeout to satisfy my chicken pozole craving. This place completely hit the spot! Very friendly service over the phone and when I walked in-- they helped me right away. Food and payment transactions were quick. I loved the ofrenda they had on display for the upcoming Dia de los Muertos. My family got together to celebrate Mexican Mother's Day and my mom had chosen the restaurant because of the live mariachi knowing my grandparents would enjoy it. Since we had a large party, 11 people, my mom went ahead and made the reservation over a week in advance for May 10 at 6 pm. They let her know that since it was a Friday evening and they get very busy, our whole party must be present before seating and they could only hold our table for 10 minutes. Completely understandable so we made sure to advise our family to arrive on time so we could ensure our table. We arrive at 5:55 when we notice that they have indoor and outdoor seating but the inside is completely full. I mention this to my mom as it appears they intend on seating us outside. She goes in to ask about it since it was never asked nor mentioned to her that they had both types of seatings. Having two seniors with us we had no plan to sit outside in the wind. They were discussing it for quite some time before my mom returned outside and told us that yes they most likely will seat us outside since there was no room to dine inside. The majority of our party (8 people) had arrived by 6 pm when the infamous Monica came outside and pretty much scolded my mom in the most condescending tone saying that for "future reference" we have to request indoors especially when we have a larger party on such a busy Friday night. In her hand she has their utmost professional reservation sheet which is literally a piece of notebook paper with chicken scratch pencil writing and highlighter all over. She continues to tell my mom that they have a long list of large party reservations and that it's not her fault that we didn't specify. This whole time my mom isn't able to get a word in before she goes on again stating that we only have 5 minutes for the rest of our party to arrive or else they'll move on. Mind you we were only waiting on 3 other people, one being my PREGNANT cousin who was walking over from the parking lot. It is now 6:07 and our entire party is there and we see that the poor staff under Monica's orders are scrambling, moving tables around, bussing, moving patio heaters, and more. We all wait outside in the cold while this is going on and my poor grandparents and cousin are all trying to sit down at this point. 15 minutes later (after telling us we had 10 minutes to get everyone here) we are directed towards the back patio where there is a black curtain along the perimeter and patio heaters. While this wasn't ideal we were just grateful to have been sitting at this point. We then request the hostess to turn on the patio heaters where she responds that they can't because the curtain is drawn making it a hazard. My mom is extremely frustrated at this point and asks her why if she called in advance to make a reservation with the sole purpose of being accommodated were we not asked about the seating options. She responds chuckling stating "Yeah we get that a lot", like really?! Shouldn't that then be means to fix the way you run things because clearly it's not working. But anywho, we all sit down and read over the menu when we notice the prices for the most plain and simple dishes but specifically the guacamole. Right next to it instead of having a price it instead reads, " $ MARKETPRICE". Are you serious? For guacamole at a Mexican restaurant, that is absolutely ridiculous. My cousin was craving it so she ordered it and when they brought it out we were shocked. For the size of about one avocado worth it was $15. Ridiculous right? For my entree I decided to order the taquitos hoping there was no way they could go wrong with that and so did my brother and my aunt. When they bring out the dishes the only toppings for the taquitos is a spoon of crema and guacamole. My aunt requested lettuce to add on top since she was expecting that with some pico as well where we find out later on the bill that it was $2 extra for less than a handful of shredded iceberg. Sheesh at this point I'm wondering what they aren't charging us for. I feel the need to make it clear that our server Jason was great overall and did his best given the circumstances. He was very attentive and was constantly checking in with us with a positive attitude. I feel for the staff as it seems that this is a huge lack on management's part as the rest of the staff were also very friendly and trying their best in this difficult situation. As we finished our food it was mid at best, the price in no way justifies what you are served and if you think about any substitutions just expect another charge. At this point another large party is directed at a table right next to us and has the same reaction as our group did where they had not planned to be sitting outside. It's now 7:15 and the mariachi can be heard playing inside and after a couple songs make their way outside to our group. Served with rice and beans. The best thing about this dish was the rice and next the beans. They served this with a steak knife, good thing, the mini tortilla was hard and robbery. Good thing I had the knife. The meat was dried and in little pieces. My wife had Chicken Tostada. The chicken was very dry very and small amount of pico de gallo. Guacamole and sour cream. When she asked for more salsa it cost $1.50 for a small container. Our friend had 4 Taquitos with guacamole and sour cream served with rice and beans. The taquitos were very dry. We were so excited to visit this place as I hadn't been there since it moved from across the street many many years ago! We walked up to the hostess who was an older lady with short hair. She told us the the wait was 30 minutes!!!! There was no one else waiting. I'm a foodie so I've gone to several restaurants and they NEVER tell you 30 minutes unless it's the Cheesecake Factory. Even worst is that there were empty tables which her hostess try to tell her but with her hand she told her to stop talking. We came here last night to watch the game and have some appetizers and drinks. We ordered the fiesta platter and strawberry, cucumber, pomegranate, and Tamarindo margaritas. It went perfectly with the apps and there was plenty for all 4 of us. We had a great time eating and drinking. The drinks were not too sweet and definitely on the stronger side which is totally fine. We were seated outside and had a great view of the televisions. When we out in our name, there was a mix up with how many were in our party, which delayed us getting seated. The service was friendly and slightly delayed since it was packed due to the world series game. We would definitely want to come back and try other items too. Recently stopped in with friends and my dog for dinner. We asked to be outside since I do not have a service dog and the weather was nice out. The food was delicious--Casa Moreno never disappoints. I wanted to shoutout Susan in particular because she was exceptional. She recommended a delicious dish for my friend--he ended up loving it and she went above and beyond to make the dining experience for my pup just as lovely. Just left a few moments ago; very dissatisfied. My husband and I went for happy hour because we saw their post on IG. We sat down and our server was Susan, she said "welcome it's happy hour, would you like a drink". We ordered margaritas, tamarindo and cucumber. We ordered another round, strawberry and watermelon. Final round of watermelon and cucumber. We also ordered beef nachos. We received our bill and everything was regular priced, when i asked Susan about it she said that what we ordered wasn't eligible and that where we were seated also doesn't qualify for happy hour. Did she express this to us once?? No. According to her, we should have noticed that there wasn't happy hr menus at our tables (it's not a huge place) and that happy hr menu is only for the bar area. No where is there signage that says this. Not even on the picture. She said our margaritas were craft and couldn't be marked down, only strawberry because it is "fruity". Mind you, on the menu it doesn't list margaritas as FRUITY and last time i checked, watermelon, tamarindo and cucumber are considered fruits. She said no one else was confused by this. She claimed to be the manager and marked $2 off SOME of the drinks, not all. And said there was nothing else she could do, and that the nachos i ordered were not happy hr nachos even tho she didn't specify there was a difference when i ordered them. I came, I saw, I ate, I drank....and enjoyed!! There's nothing like an "old reliable" that you forgot you remembered. I've lived in Covina for awhile now ...and at one point lived LITERALLY across the street from their old location in Downtown Covina. They moved across the street some time ago, to a bigger two story location that is beautiful and well-decorated. Service was excellent, the food was hot - as in well-cooked.
