The 1 star review is not because the food was bad. The waiter(s) tried to rip me and my family off. We ordered apps and got fried calamari. For $17.95 I received what looked like half of an order. They were so chintzy with the sizes and for what I paid, it should have been double the amount of calamari. Then my wife ordered a large sub and my daughter ordered a small sub. When they came out, there were both the same size! I pointed it this out to the waiter and he told me he would change the price for the large to a small (which he didnt). When we got the check, the price amounts on the check seemed off. I asked the waiter for a menu and his response was" oh, my computer has been acting weird lately". Great excuse buddy.... There were a few items on the check that were overcharged - Calamari in Menu - $17.95. I was charged $18.50 Personal pizza on menu - $16.50. I was charged $18.50 Small grilled chicken sandwich on menu - $8.95. I was charged $11.50 Espresso on menu - $3.50. I was charged $3.75 Cannoli on menu - $4.75. I was charged $4.95. Regular beverage on menu - $1.95. I was charged $3.75. All of these discrepancies lead me to believe that this is a dishonest business or that the owner doesn't know that his employees are ripping his customers off. I first tried Rays when we needed catering for a retreat. The Chicken Saltimboca and Ziti with Broccoli was great. (wished it was cavatelli though) I've been back a few times and have to highly recommend the grilled chicken/spinach pizza which was outstanding! I also had a Margarita and 1/2 sausage pizza. All were thin crust by defaul. Trust me when I tell you the 18" pizza is huge!! Their house salads are the best too! as well as the Arugula salad with goat cheese, walnuts and sun dried tomatoes. The only thing I wished I had asked for was the dressing on the side. We enjoyed the pizza so much we weren't able to have the salad right away and it does get wilty. First time here and definitely not the last. Food was very good and our waiter was such a personable young man, excellent service. One note, the prices we were charged were higher than what was on the menu. I was told that I was given an old menu. I spoke with the owner and he was very, very nice about it and is making good for it. He handled it really well. read more

I ordered a roast beef, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers on garlic bread. There is so little roast beef, you can't even taste it! If I wanted just a loaf of bread, I would've just ordered garlic bread with cheese and saved myself $9. Coworker ordered a salad and it was awful compared to what they used to serve. So many people have recommended them but I refuse to pay prices for food that I can get cheaper, and with more meat, at Wawa. This is the 3rd time I've ordered from Ray's. Had issues the 2nd time, I called to address the issues and the staff was so rude and nasty on the phone, like they don't need your business, so it's not worth calling I just won't order again when someone says to order from there. They also charge $3 for delivery (we are 1.1 miles away) and expect you to tip drivers decently. read more

I stopped into Ray's for a quick slice on the way back from the beach. The parking lot around back has plenty of space for cars. The dining room inside is clean and the tile floor is tastefully done. There are a few paintings that adorn the wall, bringing a classic, Italian atmosphere. They also have an ATM machine and fresh deli meats available. Their pizza is the classic Jersey shore style: a thin, crisp base with greasy, salty cheese and an excellent, flavorful tomato sauce. The crust on the slice was okay. When I was a kid most pizzerias were at least aight. These days most of them I wonder what the hell am I doing in here! This isn't one of those places I was happy with the quality of the pizza. Hands down the best pizza in NJ. There, I said it. The tomato sauce is what makes it, and it's the freshest, sweetest and lightest I've ever had from any pizzeria. Definitely not that pastey, bitter stuff that other joints make. Everyone is always greeted with a friendly welcome. Freshness matters; cheese grated, sauce, meats, etc. Marco makes sure of this. There is a nice, sit down area in the back - not usually found in a pizzeria. Bringing your own wine or beer is perfectly welcomed here. One of the few places in Jersey that properly makes deep fried calzones (make sure to ask for it to be with Ricotta). This place is fantastic. Food is second to none. The pizza crust and breads are may e the best I ha e ever eaten. Moms cheesecake was the best. We were visiting for the USS New Jersey commissioning and ate dinner there both nights we were in town. The service was amazing also. If you are in hazlet, find rays. Pizza seems decent but I regularly get the garlic knots which are okay to me of course it would be better if they had more vegan options but I wouldn't expect it from every pizzeria, it just seemed very nonexistent , from the service I've had so far it's decent and too special. Atmosphere is is decent and could use a slight update but it's fine as is. I give them a two and a half if I could but since I can't they get two for now maybe one day if they had what I wanted they'll get more stars. read more

Stopped in after hitting the beach. First impression was great when the hostess immediately said "hi" and sat us at a table. Later after eating the chef said "thanks and goodbye". Those little basic things are sadly lacking in a lot of other places. We ordered some slices and salads. Everything was fresh. Had a plain slice and soda, that's how I judge if I'll be back to a pizza joint. First it's Pepsi, not Coke, fountain Pepsi just isn't the same. The pizza, it was fine, probably a little better than average, not offensive, not mind-blowing, but it's a decent slice. I'm not sure why some people say this pizza is either extreme, but it's not... it's just a typical slice of pizza. I was really looking forward to eating here because I read in the New York Times that Ray's moved from the city to Hazlet recently. If you know pizza, then you know there are a lot of claims as to who the original Ray's Pizza is. In any event, I was disappointed in the pizza. The dough seemed dry and the overall taste was bland.
