Ray's Helova Deli & Discount Beverage Center - Bologna Sandwich with cheese

Ray's Helova Deli & Discount Beverage Center

Lake George, NY - heading north on 9N from Lake George toward Bolton Landing for a morning snowshoe…read morehike, we were desperately scanning the roadside for an open deli to buy a sandwich (my child's bribe/reward for coming on hikes), when Ray's surfaced along the road minutes into our drive, hallelujah! It's a proper country one-stop-shop convenience store + deli: sandwiches & salads, coffee, breakfast, wine & liquor, firewood, ice, and some basic outdoor supplies you might find yourself needing in a pinch. I got a 12" Italian sub (swapped out turkey for pepperoni) with a side of vinegar and oil, and it was very good and fresh. Well located and a great pit stop for picking up supplies before you head out for your Adirondacks adventures. Open from 8am-7pm daily.

It's basically a deli and a mini mart all in one. You go to the front and order your food. Then you go through the store, wait in the line, grab soda etc, and then check out. We ordered a pepperoni sandwich for the kids, a ham sandwich for my husband and I had turkey. Mine was turkey on rye with cheese and mustard and is just like an NYC deli. While waiting in line, I spoke to a local postal worker, she agreed, best local deli. You should absolutely stop here if you are in town.

Last year when we ate there it was a 5 star. This year only a 4 star. The service was great, but…read morethey have changed to the part skim cheese. PLEASE bring back the whole milk cheese.

Giuseppe's in Lake George is a reminder that while the food scene in the Village has come a long…read moreway in recent years, it still isn't exactly a food lover's paradise. I'll admit that living near Trenton has made me a little spoiled when it comes to pizza, but even with that in mind, this was not great by any stretch of the national imagination. The main appeal was convenience. Giuseppe's was only a few steps from our hotel, and the idea of eating pizza on the balcony overlooking the lake at sunset sounded too good to pass up. The order was ready quickly, less than thirty minutes, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, despite asking for utensils and plates both on the phone and again in person, they forgot them entirely. A short walk back to the shop solved the problem, and to their credit, the staff handed them over without any fuss. The pizza itself was the kind of food that serves a purpose but not a memory. The crust was too thick and doughy, the sauce had very little character, and the cheese existed mostly to keep everything from falling apart. It was utility-grade food sold at premium tourist-town prices. We knew we were paying that tax going in, but even so, it felt steep for what we got. Still, it did the job. Our family had a meal, the sunset over the lake was beautiful, and we went from phone call to first bite in under forty minutes on a Saturday night. For that, I'll give some credit. But for the pizza itself, there's not much to recommend. Three stars for speed and convenience, not for flavor.
