If you're a student at IUPUI needing a haircut, a tan, or pretty nails, Ray's Campus Salon is the place to go. With a month of tanning for only $26.00, you'll be glad you chose Ray's Campus Salon instead of Sun Tan City, which costs $30 just for one tan. This place is always clean and the employees friendly. Ray, the owner of the business, is a very sweet man. The salon employees are all very kind, appreciative, and helpful. They make you feel like a welcomed customer and ask you how your day is going. I have noticed that Ray, in particular, keeps up-to-date with his customers' lives. They are very knowledgeable of their products, and if you are unhappy with something, they will make sure you leave with a smile on your face. The cost to tan is not bad at all. Plus they accept Jagtags, so you can pay that way if you want. They only complaint I have is their reduced hours on the weekends. They are not open on Saturday's or Sunday's. Ray may come in random Saturday mornings, but it is unexpected. Also, they close at 5:00. This can be difficult for me to find a time to tan when I am working in the morning and going to classes in the afternoons. Don't get a manicure here. My "no chip gel manicure" was done with normal nail polish and gel top coat...red flag number one. The polish was not painted up to my cuticles... AKA it looked like the manicure was already 1-2 weeks grown out...red flag number 2. I left the salon with a thumb nail that had a smudge...red flag number 3. A few hours later one of the nails peeled off by itself. The next day I was able to literally peel the entire manicure off with my fingers. Normally, gel polish needs to be soaked in acetone. I paid $35+$5 tip (I felt obligated) and asked for a refund later that evening and was only refunded $20. Just go somewhere else for nails. The fact they can't even admit their mistake is unbelievable. read more

I have only been to Ray's for tanning so I can only vouch for that portion of their services selection and their service. If you attend IUPUI, live in nearby apartments or work in one of the hospitals downtown, Ray's is a very handy tanning location. The lots nearby require parking permits so it makes it more challenging/ pricey for someone to park who does not have a permit. Tanning prices are excellent and do not have strings attached like some other salons. I tanned with unlimited minutes for $20! Not to shabby if I say so myself. There is only one bed; however, you can make an appointment or just walk in which is usually fine since there is rarely a line. The week before IUPUI's spring break I had to wait like two different times I went to tan, but I would never complain because I only waited 15 minutes. I have waited for 45 minutes at Sun Tan City and they have a dozen or more beds. Their bed also has a face tanner if that tickles your fancy. The staff are very friendly and remembered my name after coming in a few times which was comforting and made me feel like I was back home. They asked if I was happy with the bed on several different occasions; thus, they want to make sure you're happy with your service. They were always friendly and happy to get me fixed up with some toasty UV rays. read more

Having this salon on campus is convenience at its finest! I came in on my birthday and needed a boost from same old drab hair style I've had for awhile. Now I had never been here before but have passed it nearly everyday because I live on campus and I decided that today was the day to give it a try. I had my hair colored, trimmed, styled and eyebrows waxed by Jackie. She did an amazing job and was great company. I walked out feeling polished, refreshed and ready for my birthday dinner. Don't give this place the cold shoulder simply because its an on campus salon! The prices are so awesome and the people are so friendly. First off: The Cutting Room is a weird little place. "Walk-ins welcome!", a sign in the window says. So I walked in and was confronted by...walls? There was an empty waiting room and no greeting party, but it appeared that a collection of barbers/stylists just might await in private rooms on either side of a hallway leading to the back. So I headed back, passed a bunch of closed doors, got that Maybe you shouldn't be here sort of feeling, turned around and - "May I help you?" Um, sure, guy! Just looking for that Welcome. For the walk-ins, you know, like on the sign. About a half-hour later I had what appeared from my vantage point to be the best haircut I'd ever received. So that was nice. I still don't quite get The Cutting Room's deal, but I DO get Roy the Barber's deal: for a few dollars more than something like Supercuts you get an exceptionally attentive, almost impassioned haircut. Roy clearly takes great pride in his craft - you know that even if the client-cutter telepathy doesn't quite yield the results you envision, you'll definitely at least walk out looking GOOD (hairwise). In my experience, though, the telepathy is spot on: I let my hair grow for 3 months and then get it cut back, so it's not like the guy ought to remember exactly what worked last time. But he pretty much does. It seems to involve a degree of layering and attention to the weirdnesses of my bangs (fringe?) well beyond what I've had at the numerous other barbers I've frequented. And my hair ends up growing out evenly and hanging naturally with no interference. Which is what I want, because if I had to mess with my hair I would not have time to write overly long Yelp reviews. One other thing: for just $28, Roy delivered as sublime a straight-razor shave as I can imagine existing. At least six different hot towel wraps, two lather/shave cycles, massaged-in aftershave gel, even a steam machine going in the background...yeah, some high-falutin' oldtimey shop out there probably can one-up the experience. But for $28? I'm ready to wager against it. read more

What a rip off do not go there. They have a website that says haircuts for women cost 25$ and they charged me double that! When I called and asked why they said they updates their prices in December and that there was nothing they could do about it. I explained what their website said and that they really should update it and the lady said "well we don't even have a website so I don't know what to tell you". I have been going there for nearly 15 years. Karen always cuts my hair. If you need your hair cut short, have Karen do it. The folks there are always nice, friendly and the prices are cheap, compared to other places around town. I have also tanned there and they do a great job of keeping their bulbs fresh and replacing them regularly, so you don't get strips. read more

Recently switched from a big name chain of men's hair salons to try out the Cutting Room and was not disappointed! I couldn't be happier with the friendly and quality services Roy provided. Ray is the man! He can cut hair without even trying. I had always wanted a classically trained, gentleman barber, and Ray is that to a T. He always remembers me and asks me how I am. Showed up for a 4:30PM haircut at 4:15PM. The door was locked. I called their number several times and waited til 4:35PM. No answer. I could see their phone ringing in the salon. Everyone must have taken off early. My appointment was confirmed via text and email, so I knew it was booked. Very poor customer service to have customers showing up in a timely manner for appointments, only to have the staff be absent. Couldn't even review the haircut. Judging by my experience, I'm guessing it wouldn't be very good. read more

Roy the Barber cuts and colors women's hair! Experience is relaxing, pricing is very competitive, and really enjoy the individual studio approach where I'm not sitting in front of a window or a group of other clients with my hair all wet. Would highly recommend. read more

I was pretty excited about my first trip, as I was desperately seeking a "go-to" barber in my new neighborhood. Visited on a Thursday during normal business hours and the door was locked without any note of explanation outside. Waited for around 30 minutes, knocked, tried calling, etc. to see if someone was just late for work or out to lunch, but ended up leaving. Everything seemed a bit odd. Lights were all on and blinds opened, one car parked right out front (with a dog in the back seat and all windows closed) as if employee was there, but no luck! read more

I don't usually write reviews but I had to for this one... went in for dye and trim to try to salvage my hair which was scraggly and damaged from bleach/bad dye. The stylist there Grace worked magic on my hair and it was voluminous, soft and shiny by the end. Truly amazing and worth it, honestly better results and service (and prices) than some other boujie salon downtown. Would definitely recommend :) read more

The first haircut I got here was excellent. Best one I've had. Stephanie gave me exactly the haircut I asked for. The second one was pretty good (again, by Stephanie), but I came away thinking it was only halfway done. The third time I went in, I asked for Stephanie. She had me sit down in the chair, and then tried to push every service they offer. She wouldn't take no for an answer. I had to refuse each service literally five times before she would move on to push the next. Not only that, she expected me to explain my reasoning for turning down each one! I was appalled at the way they treat new customers and former employees I had went there once before and had an amazing experience with a wonderful stylist and I was only charged for what I had done which was a color. I come in with the same expectation and was told the "base price is $80" for everything... cut, color, you name it. I expressed that I had only been charged 45 for the same procedure and they pointed to a chair and asked if thats where it happened. I nodded and the employee proceeded to talk negatively about a former employee and how she "no longer works there because she made up the rules" I understand if you have an issue with a former employee but NEVER trash them in front of a potential customer. ALSO this is the closest salon to a lot of students and by charging "80 dollars and potentially more" for an all over color no foil is outrageous. Poor customer service and too high of prices for what they offer. I will never come here again and I hope no one else does either. read more

Ray was a really good guy who gave a good haircut. He wasn't the best that I've gone to but definitely wasn't the worst. He was a stand-up guy who was always a pleasure to talk to. Every time I sat in his chair he always asked me about things going on in my life that we had discussed the month prior and then he would transition into talking about sports and the news. It definitely made for a nice, relaxing visit. He's the kind of guy you could spend an evening with at the bar, just shooting the breeze. He was one of the more social barbers I've had but still got the haircut done in a timely manner. His prices are very reasonable and he's generally easy to schedule with. In addition to hair cuts, his business also offers tanning packages. However, with only one bed and limited operating hours, my monthly package there seemed to be a waste since it was hard to get in there after I finished work and before he closed. The lack of weekend hours also made it seem like a waste but know athat it is there if you live nearby and your availability matches his hours. If you are a student at IUPUI, live or work nearby I would recommend giving him a try. I enjoyed my time spent there while I was in grad school at IUPUI and I'm sure he will treat you as well as he did me. read more

I went in with a fellow student and the customer service there was despicable to say the least. The workers there continuously cut us off mid sentence and were extremely rude. I can confidently say that I will never go in there to get my haircut, or any other service for that matter. I will definitely let all of my friends know of the terrible service there as well.
