**July 2026: Sunday Afternoon Visit**…read more During my SDCC weekend, I walked by Michaela's Meals in the Gaslamp Quarter, which was right between my hotel and the convention center. This shop was just one street down from Ralphs and Vitality Tap so it was conveniently located. On Sunday afternoon, I noticed the space was open for business, so I popped in to check it out. It's a small spot with a staff member, a fridge full of pre-made meals, a little bar area with two stools, a cold water pitcher, and a microwave. The main business model is a weekly subscription, but I learned that the owner also keeps leftovers in the fridge for grab-and-go customers on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1:30-5 p.m. They also run a "buy 4 get 1 free" and "buy 8 get 2 free" promotion, which makes the meals an even better value. I assumed she makes an abundance and sells those for $10 a meal, but since I stopped by close to closing, I got mine for $5 each. I grabbed two to try because the meals looked very nutrition-focused and considering I ate basically garbage throughout Comic Con it was a smart choice to fuel up with real food. I tried a Mediterranean chicken over yellow rice and zucchini, as well as a ground hamburger-style sloppy joe-type meal. The food definitely leans healthy, and considering how inconvenient it is to eat well at SDCC, this was a great find. Since she has Wednesday and Sunday pickups, I'm now contemplating doing a preview-night (Wednesday) pickup for a couple of meals on my next visit. I'll be in touch with Michaela's for future San Diego trips.

I also love that there are so many healthy options to choose from. So far, I'm really enjoying the every-other-week option. It gives me the convenience of having meals ready to go without feeling like I'm overcommitting. I'm pretty sure I was the first customer and I ordered the falafel which they were out of. wow. So I settled on the chicken kabob which was supposed to be a plate and it looked more like a side salad for $12. There was nothing special about this kabob and they were telling me it was some sort of authentic recipe authentic or not it was unmemorable. The more and more I try food trucks the more and more I am disappointed. They're just overpriced and not worth it and this is one of them.

The menu includes the option to choose two snacks which can be substituted for one meal. If you need to make any modifications to your meal (i.e. exclude mashed potatoes for extra veggies), all you need to do is provide dietary needs in a field on the Google form, and if there are any questions, you can handle everything through text. There are checkboxes on the Google form for keto and paleo options. For the convenience of food prep and to support locally, I've been happy with Viva Foods. With two young ones at home, working full time and a husband who is gone due to the military, these meals have helped make life easier!! I read another note about separating the veggie from protein and balance the cooking times. I'll try that next as well as adding the sweet potato fries to the air fryer for a quick crisp and reheat. They have an outdoor patio for people to dine in and enjoy their food. I didn't really know what to expect from a "ghost kitchen". Surprisingly, I was impressed! The concept is made simple and easy! However I was very disappointed with these meals. First off, they have a form you fill out and it shows you all of the meals. Looking at the photos, I was excited to try the food. But before I even got to seeing my meals, the wrong meals were delivered to me. I had to call the support and they assured me that the driver would come back and swap them out, a bad start to my experience. Following that, when I finally got the food I was very disappointed. The food looks nothing like the photos, and not only that but it is extremely bland, but not only that, all of the lean protein I ordered was extremely dry, as once I reheated it it seemed like it was cooked too much. To give them the credit though, the pork wasn't dry, however that's not saying much given its easy to keep that from being dry. I've tried multiple competitors in regards to meal prep and this is the most expensive meal prep company I've ever tried, but it's considerably worse than the others in San Diego.

I've tried the big names like Green Chef, Blue Apron... etc. in the past and my stomach never agreed with them, and I also don't want to mess with dirty dishes right now. I found Pure Meal Prep and liked that it's freshly prepared locally, and they even get their produce from the same place I do: Specialty Produce! The meals have been very tasty so far, with only one pasta-based dish that I wasn't crazy for. My biggest concern was the proteins might be dry or tough being pre-prepared, but they have been tender and moist - kudos to the chefs! They are generous in portion sizes, balanced, healthy (and my stomach has been just fine!) and just what I need right now.
