I regret trying this place out. I am fascinated how others could rate this place so highly. Maybe because the locals have a limited selection in town? I was visiting family in Peterborough and decided to take my wife out to celebrate our anniversary. I will summarize the pros and cons of this place, but in short; I would never recommend this place. If you looking for a premium dinning experience, then I suggest you go elsewhere (I.e. The Keg - it's nicer all around). This place just charges premium prices; without the premium experience. Pros: - Lots of parking at the super market across the street. - waitress was very friendly and efficient. - Risotto, thick cut fries/wedges, Brussels sprout salad and pepper corn sauce was tasty. - Whomever did their marketing pictures is brilliant. Made the place look much more than it is! Cons: - Small, sparsely decorated dinning area, with basic seating. Other than a couple of nicely done features, it felt like I was in a friends basement. - Music was so loud; I could barley hear the waitress or my wife. - The menu is a piece of paper and was wet in places; like a cafeteria. Why not go online, like everyone else? - The wine selection is limited and is missing a good number of typical options. No Merlot, Gammay, Cabernet, Syrah, Malbec, etc). Clearly the person ordering the wine is only catering to their own taste. - The $14 "special" glass of Sangria I ordered was basically a fruit drink with a hint of wine. It tasted mostly of orange juice. - the Steak was tasty and well cooked, but a poor cut, so there was a lot of waste. You know you're having a meal to remember when you start cutting smaller bites of your filet in order to make it last longer. I am in Peterborough this week for work and decided to stop in to treat myself to a fancy meal after a jam packed day. The restaurant is very cozy and my server was very welcoming. Dining alone while away on a business trip isn't my favorite thing to do but her kindness made it feel less awkward. I ordered the filet and choose a twice baked potato and the veggies as my sides. The twice baked potato was cooked perfectly and was well seasoned. The veggies consisted of a mix of green beans, bok choy, & beets. Again, all cooked perfectly. Now on to the star of the meal. The filet. It was served with a beef reduction sauce and was heavenly. The steak was cooked perfectly to my taste (medium well, I know, I know) and was as easy to cut as room temperature butter. Each piece just melted in my mouth. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water again so if you're in the market for an excellent meal, just GO! read more

We've eaten at Rare Grill House a number of times and always had fabulous meals. Peterborough is fortunate to have as high caliber a chef as owner Brad Watt. The specialty of the house is expertly prepared meats. We've had everything from bison ribeye to house smoked salmon to pork belly & pigs tails, all absolutely delicious. For non-meat eaters, the freshly prepared salads, soups and gnocchi are excellent choices. Much of the produce and protein is sourced locally and seasonally for the freshest and highest quality. The service is excellent and the attention to detail is impeccable. Table linens, elegant flatware, Riedel crystal stemware, Peugeot pepper mills, and comfortable chairs add a level of elegance to the otherwise casual dining room. We've always had excellent wine suggestions and fairly priced, as well. Although it is one of the higher priced restaurants in Peterborough, the quality of the food is well worth it. read more

I ate one amazing meal here with a friend last year and can't say enough good things about the place. The food was fan-tastic, with a focus on steak (as the name might suggest). The service was excellent - our server provided excellent food suggestions and was every bit as attentive as we required. I'll say that the atmosphere on my first visit was a bit stuffy for me and most of the clientele were... somewhat older than my dining companion and I. No matter. Peterborough is full of the regular fast food holes, and recently there has been an explosion of gastropubs and healthy/alternative eating establishments, but high end dining has been an elusive search until Rare came along. Rare Grill House is a high end steakhouse right here in Peterborough. Clean, modern décor, a small menu that focusses on their specialties, and a modest wine list that leans toward the budget-conscious end are there for you. My waiter, Graham, was very knowledgeable and even found a 2008 Brunello in the wine cellar for me to enjoy with my steak. My 16 oz ribeye came quickly and was delicious, a primal experience of glorious beef cooked perfectly and accompanied by a delicious mushroom risotto and some nicely cooked vegetables. Sure, I could say that the steak should have been trimmed a little more judiciously, that the risotto had a little too much cream in it, that the wine list should be more substantial, but this is Peterborough, not New York, and Rare gave me the best meal I have ever had here. And don't think about complaining if things are not right - they will turn those noses right up and glare at you. In a city where finding good food is a chore - pass on this place. This was our first visit to Rare Grill House. The main course steaks and jus lie were excellent, and the dessert of s'mores decadent and delightful (large enough for two to share) but the 'port porched pear salad' fell short . While it contained a delightful Stilton, the pears decidedly were not poached in port, in fact appeared raw and unripened. The grilled calamari was tough and and had to be returned. A+ for service, entries, coffee and dessert but in our opinion improvement needed on starters for an establishment of this calibre. read more

Excellent food - the beef is always cooked to your specifics and is melt in your mouth delicious. Go to Rare if you are a beef lover and you will not regret it! On the downside Rare is quite pricey compared to the vast majority of Peterborough restaurants. Save your money and enjoy yourself. It IS worth it! read more

If you think you can't find fine dining or a classy organic meal outside of a major city like Toronto, think again. Much of the food is locally grown (just a few miles from Peterborough) and the meat is all from organic. While the other three members had various forms of steaks (which they all said was excellent) I went for the organic chicken breast. While it does take reservations, you mostly need them for late in the week and on the weekends, closed Sundays and Mondays. You may experience a long wait for your food, but that's because they're making it really good, and if you're not used to organic food, you may have some problems with the meal going through your system, but that's not really connected to the quality of the food. We don't eat at Rare often, but we are never dissapointed when we do. They most recently were able to squeeze in the five of us even though we had accidently only made a reservation for four. As alwasy, the food was devine. Steaks done to perfection, duck and vennison a tasty alternative to the beef - everything was as good or better than we expected.
