After scouring online forums for a dinner spot in Peterborough, Ashburham ale house kept coming up as a spot locals recommended for quality food & Canadian beers. The forums were right....the food here was FANTASTIC & the service attentive for such a fast past restaurant! What we ordered: 1/2 CHICKEN 1/2 RIBS (5/5) - the waiter said anything that's smoked/BBQ on their menu was highly suggested. The dry rub marinade was smokey & had depth in flavour throughout the cuts of meat, which was also cooked great! The fries were crispy & I enjoyed the curried mayo for it. ROASTY BEET SALAD + added lemon chicken skewer AND shrimp ($6 extra for each protein, 4.5/5) - loved all the crunchy textures from the seeds, fried feta and maple beets (although a bit heavy with its quantity), & fresh veggies. The dressing is house-made & I surprisingly loved the lemon chicken flavour - tangy & complimented the dish so well. I concur with the locals on this one. Ashburnham Ale house is SUPERB. read more

This quaint restaurant is located in a downtown areas of Peterborough and has a great setting. We arrived with 2 dogs and granddaughter for dinner. Service was really good as they brought water for the dogs and catered to the 6 year old. Food was very good and priced reasonable. They featured local beer on the menu. Stopped by here on a quick weekday afternoon trip to Peterborough. The restaurant was buzzing with people during the lunch rush and there was a wait for tables for two so we decided to sit at the bar. The decor is very rustic and designed to give the feel of an old backcountry hunting lodge. There are framed local highlights scattered around the space that adds to the nostalgia for its regulars. I ended up ordering the Black Bean Vegetarian Burger with aged gouda, blue cheese and house cut fries. I have to admit, it was one of the best veggies burgers I've ever had. The bean patty was perfectly cooked and held its shape for the entire duration of t he meal. Normally, veggie patties fall apart the more you bite into it. The real hero of the meal was the house hot sauce. The in-house "habanero curry" hot sauce was so flavourful that you can quickly forget how spicy the sauce is and soak it all up your fries. Something spice lovers MUST try when they visit. Highly recommend this pub and even though I didn't drink this time, they have an excellent selection of local and imported craft beers and spirits to choose from. read more

Came by on a Saturday evening. We ended up sitting by the bar Cus we didn't want to wait for a table. Was just visiting in the area and we were originally supposed to have sushi across the street but I ended up being convinced to try this place. I'm glad we did. I had the wings in honey garlic. Oh my goodness, it is delicious. Never had better wings in my life. Had the coconut curry to follow and that was hearty and flavourful. My hearts full, so glad we found this little gem. It is my second time here and I love it! I came to Peterborough for a business trip with my boss and he likes coming here. My first visit was probably a 4 star but my last visit has been amazing. The staff is friendly, there's a good selection of beer (according to my boss who drinks a lot), and the food was really good. I loved their calamari. The breading was perfect, and the calamari was fried just right. I never knew I liked calamari that much until I tried it here. They had a special when I went which was beef ribs. And let me tell you something about their beef ribs. . . It was big with nice chunks of meat. And the meat was cooked really well. The gochujang (spicy Korean paste) base sauce went well with this tender, juicy monstrosity. They also served it with kimchi fries (which can probably use a bit more kimchi but it was fantastic), and their corn (which was kind of too salty on the top but it was nice). I'd definitely come back here again. Another tip when you visit: if you're a fan of whiskey and gin, I'd highly recommend you visit the Black's Distillery across the street. My boss loves this place, and the owner is pretty friendly and very knowledgeable. You can tell by talking to him that he loves what he does. I'm not that big on alcohol but I did enjoy their whiskey. read more

I ordered the Steak Frites. As the menu says, "blackened Chicago style atop our house cut fries with Chimichurri sauce." Blackend yes, on the fries yes, cold yes, chimichurri NO.. came with Pesto... waiter hands it over and says steak with pesto? I'm thinking, no.. chimichurri and Pesto are far different... I went with it and it wasn't good. The steak was cooked perfectly! The steak was great tasting! But being cold and Pesto... it just didn't work.. I get that they were doing their best but that's false advertising at that point. The rest of our table but one got cold food. read more

They have quite bit beer selection (but not too many on tap), the service was good 5/5, but the food was just a bit above average overall. We ordered margy pizza, 4/5, good crust, my daughter like it. The southern pride brisket sammiches was too salty, 2/5. Went here for lunch today. On the weekend they have a brunch menu and the regular menu. Great homemade food with excellent choices on both menus plus reasonable prices!! They have a large beer menu as well. The restaurant has a patio and bar area along with a dining room. All tastefully decorated and spacious. Lots of places to talk and not be crowded. My husband had the brisket which was delicious and I had the schnitzel. Large portions and very yummy. I would recommend this place and will come back if we are in the area. read more

Delicious pub grub on a holiday Thanksgiving Monday. To start, I had the soup of the day (peanut and sweat potato) and it was very good. As my main, I had the Strongman Sandwich (panko crusted port schnitzel) and it was awesome. Really no complaints other than a broken latch on the bathroom stall door. First visit to this pub/restaurant. We ordered the nacho appetizer with extra bacon and the calamari appetizer to share. Both were fantastic. The service was great. Very friendly. The restaurant is very clean. It seems that this place gets very busy so get there early. My only regret was that I did not order the soup of the day - Potato leek with brie cheese. Bunch of amateur incompetent waiters didn't know how to take reservations. Turned away many people with reservations and accepted those they personally knew only. Hire more competent people next time with better pay to attract decent staff. Hope you guys figure something out eventually. read more

Ashburnham Ale House is a welcomed neighbourhood pub located on Hunter St. East in East City. The pub-style atmosphere is good for casual dining. There is a large bar area with a couple of chairs in front of a real, wood-burning fireplace which is very cozy in the winter. There is a main dining area up front and separate dining room off of that for private functions and overflow seating. Recently installed sound-dampening panels cut down on the noise considerably! In the warmer months, the Ale House has three patios. Picnic table seating greets you on the entrance patio, smaller tables and chairs run along the street-side patio, and 3 individual covered patios off the bar area are situated along the Rotary Trail. The menu is casual contemporary pub fare. A cone of fries with dipping sauce or bruschetta are our choices for sharing. For mains, our picks are individual pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, house-made soups, and fresh salads. There are daily specials and home-made desserts, as well. The beer selection is excellent featuring craft brews and beers brewed at the Olde Stone Brewing Co., downtown, including a rotating cask conditioned tap. Decided to come here after visiting the Warsaw Caves, and it was definitely a good choice. A large area with lots of tables and patio, it made for a very relaxing environment to enjoy some beer and food. Parking here is a bit of a struggle, as there is limited parking in the lot beside the restaurant, but not all of them are designated for the restaurant itself. The decor inside was very cool there. There were art pieces throughout the restaurant, which gave it a very local vibe. The craft beers they had on tap were unique to the area, so it is a good idea to try some of those. For food, we decided to get the Black Bean Burrito w/ brisket and the Pork Ribs. Both were absolutely BOMB, and definitely worth trying. The food on the menu was quite diverse as well, so you can definitely find something that you are in the mood for. The service was quite good overall, with a very mellow and relaxed vibe throughout. Love coming here for brunch. One of the times I was disappointed since one of the main attractions for me is the Franz' breakfast sandwich and they were sold out by the time we ordered around 12:30 or 1pm. Other than this off day (they also ran out of clean coffee cups and coffee creamer but were quick to fix this problem), we've never been disappointed and we always make a point to go here for breakfast or brunch when we decide to go out. On a side note they took away the breakfast pizza which was one of the menu items I and my friends thoroughly enjoyed, and replaced it with their take on a breakfast BLT which I have yet to try. They also make 3 in-house hot sauces which are all incredibly tasty, one tasting as if it were raspberry based. Their hot sauces would be great to bring home if they ever decided to sell them. read more

Great pub with great food. It is on the expensive side but the portions are quite reasonable. A great choice for a nice evening out. The beer choice is quite extensive as well. We were told there would be a 30min wait, but we were able to sit at the bar and order drinks. We only waited about 15 min. Overall a great experience. read more

I went to Ashburnham Ale House for the first time this past Tuesday evening with my family. What started off as a great experience, quickly became one of the worst I have ever encountered in the service industry. We called 2 hours before arrival to inquire about a reservation and we were told that they were busy that evening and already on a waitlist. Since we were coming from out of town, I inquired as to the possibility of making a reservation for two hours from that time to alleviate the need for a wait once we did arrive. I was promptly told that they would not be taking anymore reservations as they were already on a wait for the evening. Upon arrival there was no parking available without the threat of being towed by the neighbouring Foodland grocery store, a bit disappointing, but not the worst thing to happen when going out for dinner. Entering the restaurant, we received a friendly greeting from the hostess who informed us it would be about a 20-30 minute wait but we were welcome to sit by the fire, and she handed us drink menus. We were served a beverage while we waited for our table. I thought this was going to be a great dinner out with family with this sort of service and friendliness. We were seated shortly thereafter and given our menus. At this point we waited no less than 10-15 minutes before there was even a sighting of a server to answer any questions, get those at the table drinks that had yet to be served, etc. When the server finally did come to the table, there was no apology for the delay, no greeting, just a simple "Drinks anyone?" The server was less than knowledgable on the craft beer selection, not really knowing what to recommend or how to recommend it based on our preferences and tastes in beer. A different server later came to take our order - at this point there were empty glasses on the table and there was no drink order taken. A short while later we received our food, from yet another different server. The food was dropped off and the server promptly left without asking if there was anything we needed or offering more drinks to those at the table with empty glasses. As our time went on, no one came to the table to check on how the food was. We had two salads that needed dressing and two drinks that needed refilling. We had to flag down another server and ask her if we could please have some more drinks. The order was taken and drinks dropped not too long after. One of us had ordered a cider and it was delivered to the table with ice in the glass. I do not take ice in my cider, and needed to have it replaced. The first cider I had I was given the option of ice or not. Clearly this is not a standard set by this restaurant as I was seemingly not given the option for my second. Again, we saw no sign of a server until our plates were empty. At which time, a server came and cleared the table. It was not too long after that, that the server that took our order appeared suddenly with the bill. Dropping it on the table, without a word, and leaving. We needed separate cheques - why this was not asked about I do not know. My brother had to flag down a server again to have the cheques separated and, when we received them back, none of the cheques were accurate and split according to what each person had. We approached the bar area to have the issue rectified and all the while the server that took the order/dropped the cheque was simply leaning against a railing near another table staring towards us. Giving payment was no easier than the rest of the ordeal as we sat there with our cheques and needed to ask to have a debit machine brought over so we could pay. The food, I will say, was quite good. The service however, was not. We will not be returning to Ashburnham Ale House anytime soon. A shame really, it seems like it has quite a bit of potential. read more

I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Peterborough. The variety of choices on the menu allow anyone to go their not knowing what they want for dinner and find something to eat. The atmosphere chooses to go with an industrial homely feel, its lack of televisions and use of music really drives forward a soft surrounding. read more
