Bobcaygeon Brewing - Which ones did we get... match the number to the menu! Nice.

Driving from Madoc, Ontario - the halfway point from Ottawa to Toronto on Hwy7. BTW the town is so…read morenice, it's some place you should drop into as they have so many hidden gems. Anyways, I digress - as I usually do, you will pass through Peterborough (yes named after me...hehehe) and then you will magically here the song... Bobcaygeon by the Tragically Hip. Bobcaygeon is a bit north of Peterborough but the Brewery is right in town! And though the Song has a few interpretations, the word BREW does not! I'm thirsty for the Amber Nectars of the Gods... let me at'em! LOL! This is the second craft/microbrew in the same number of days for the me on my small town getaway. When you enter this place, you're going to be basically dropped into a warehouse brewing operations. No cool sitting area but the murals are nice. The place is industrial but hey... we came for the BREWS not the artsy decor. Let's leave that for the fancy smancy wine peeps! Ha! Simple bench seatings to the left. A cash area to the front of you where taps line the wall under a blackboard. Menu is simple... here are the brews ORDER UP and DRINK! I did a flight of 4 to try their crafts. Overall the brews were... O...K..., I wouldn't jump up and down and cry that I found my one and only Brew Luv! See what I did there!?! :D The place was pretty empty except for some industry peeps at another table. The one guy in the shop was pretty low key and really didn't get into conversation about their brew - would have loved more info and history of the place. Everyone is different and each of us have different prefs. I know one thing, I did not like the Heavy Lies the Crown ... OMG ... reminds me of the Up'yer'Kilt brew I had decades ago. Must be bad for me to still remember it! Think that through. Anyway, in true Canadian sense where we leave no beer behind, I did drink it! Thank the lord it was a flight and not a pint!!! As I left, the brewery... the theme song of The Littlest Hobo hums through my mind as I hit the road ... HOME. Cheers.

Best craft brewery in Peterborough by far. While there is…read moreno food available really to speak of the beers themselves are very good if you're into craft beers. The staff are polite and are willing to help with any questions you might have. The atmosphere is very industrial but it is an actual brewery rather than a brew pub so it's what's expected. Worth a stop in if you're in the area or on the way to cottage country.

Church-Key Brewery - VW themed event involving both Church Key Brewery and The Little Shop of Volkswagens across the road.

Quaint little shack in the middle of nowhere. Well established 20 year brewery in the old church…read morebeside (did not tour). We arrived around noon and were served by a polite young man that admitted he had not yet tried everything on offer. There was a good selection on tap but none of the IPAs I was hoping for. We did a flight of 6 anyway, which are rather generous pours for $12 total. Nice seating outside. Some of the choices were not really appropriate for the hot summer day but surprisingly their darkest beer turned out to be the best (Holy Smoke peated scotch ale). Was not very keen on the regular ales or sours, but the honey mead was interesting so we bought a large bottle to go. There were 3 other small parties that arrived and it became rather cramped in the tiny shack and service got bogged down. I was disappointed that other employees did not emerge from the brewery to help out.

I went to Church-Key for a meetup event and had the best time with these people!…read more They sure know how to throw a party. Everything was in its place and there were no complaints or screw face from anyone, just pure joy and lots of smiles. There was plenty of choice of your hoppy brew, fresh from the never ending tap, well, when it did end there was always another keg handy to keep the refreshments going. See my pics for selections of the liquid nectar on tap. Most people asked for pints of their fave selections, but others grabbed large jugs of brew which cost a deposit. Returning with said jug got you a refill. The staff was pleasant, friendly and accommodating. Normally they close at sundown, when the street lights come on, but since we looked thirsty and were not going anywhere, they stayed up with us, drinking and cavorting into the wee hours. When the demand waned and the beer booth got empty, there was a bell to ring to summon someone from the building who would come and run the taps. A big treat for me, and others too, was the hops growing on the porch which is a first for me to see and went well as a visual while downing a pint. They also provided food in the form of delicious fresh pizza from a local restaurant and had piles of slag sitting there alongside the beer counter. It was sold by the slice and really hit the spot on that warm evening. The church building itself was closed for tours with the pandemic, but the outside looked very interesting. There was also a small cemetery alongside it, as well as a larger cemetery across the road right beside where we were camped out, adding an interesting vibe to be sure! The party aspect was well thought out with outdoor facilities in place, as well as a bonfire with plenty of seating for us, and cool tables made from wooden pallets on top of beer kegs which were solid and functional. They even had a movie for us projected on an outdoor screen visible even for some on lawn chairs across the road. Well worth seeking out, just go to the top of the hill just east of the creek, easy to find!
