Very disappointing experience, again. We used to LOVE and frequent AAH but after tonight have decided to not return. The high top in the bar seems to be consistently reserved for staff after work to pound white wine and drinks, the conversations that were had and the language that was used was appalling enough to make you want to pack up half your food and go home. Which we did. The staff are the ones occupying this table and their topics of conversation We're very unacceptable thank god we didn't have our kids their. Excellent food and a great selection of beer- I recommend asking about the rotational taps as they almost always have something totally new. Staff has always been helpful and pleasant, the portions are huge and attractively presented. I went for a pint and a burger after work, they only had two kinds of burgers and all craft beer. It was very expensive.

I have been to the Ashburnham ale house several times and because of the last visit I can easily say I won't be going back again. It all started when our hostess soured the experience for myself, my dad, his wife, my brother and my girlfriend. I was visiting for the holidays and we went for the brunch menu at around 1:30, we arrived and there was plenty of seating available (nearly all of the restaurant). Our hostess then asked us whether we had a reservation, which ultimately was completely unnecessary considering I could literally fire a cannon down the restaurant and it wouldn't hit another person. Another point I should make is that no pub I have ever been to, (and let's not kid ourselves... the ale house is most certainly a pub, no matter what kind of lofty title you give it) has ever required me to make a reservation, with the exception of holidays. Even the legendary St. Veronus has always had room for me and any guests I've had and it is by far a superior pub. I took this as a personal slight, perhaps she wrongly assessed how we were dressed with some sort of over entitled classist ranking as I cannot think of anything else we did wrong. I have been better received at many restaurants including the topiary restaurant and lounge in Toronto (a high class steak house) where I ate wearing a Guardians of the Galaxy t-shirt, ratty Converse and some old khaki shorts. However, I was willing to forgive this chocking it up to a bad day. The poor service continued however as we were reluctantly given a seat, and our waitress was rude and short with us the entire time we were there. On top of that it took about 40-50 minutes for us to get our meals (which is odd considering the place remained empty ever since we arrived). Even when the food did arrive it was barely warm, many things were over cooked like the bacon and potatoes which were basically crisps. All five of us decided we wouldn't be eating there again based off of the food alone, as we all left unsatisfied and hungry. And this brings me to the price tag... For all of this I managed to slip away (ordering only water for drinks leaving the cost of my meal alone) to $16 plus tax. If I could give less than one star I would. I was extremely excited to eat at this pub after looking at the menu. Initially, I enjoyed the atmosphere, and ordered a local microbrew lager while waiting on a table. I ordered a side house salad, the nachos with brisket, and bruschetta as starters. The salad was underdressed and underwhelming. The flavor of the Nachos and brisket were saturated with cinnamon and the corn chips where over baked. The bruschetta was thick, and lacked the crunch and texture typically associated with this appetizer, however, the flavor profiles were ok. As an entree, I had the steak frites with fresh cut fries and a homemade chimichurri. The steak was prepared well and medium rare as ordered, but the blackening seasoning and chimichurri completely overpowered the flavor of the meat, and the frites were greasy. Needless to say, but I'd go there again to have a a beer, but never dinner. read more

In Peterborough for a lacrosse tourney and was recommended to go here. It did not disappoint. Wife had the hot pot. Excellent version of a shepherds pie. I had the brisket sandwich, great combo of BBQ and Dijon with the slaw. Perfectly balanced. Great beers and drinks to go with it. Well done! read more

We went to Peterborough for a university tour with my friend and her family and I have to say it was one of the nicest bars/Ale houses I have been too. Also the decor was amazing, not to mention the food was just as good. It was a positive expirience and would recommend to anyone going through Peterborough. Took my wife and kids for lunch on Mother's Day - it was not too busy with tables available inside and on the patio - the crazy rush was over. Our server was really why this experience left a bad taste in my mouth - no pun intended. It took several minutes of sitting on the patio until the server took our lunch orders. The drinks were delivered shortly afterwards and that dear readers is the last time we saw our server. I think what happened is our server went off shift for the day - my wife saw him leave the restaurant - and there was never any communication to his replacement about the people sitting on the patio. We were the only table out there at this point. When I inquired about the status of our food the staff was very polite and apologetic - but at this point in time we had been waiting too long for our food to wait for " just another minute" for our orders. We have been here before and never had negative experiences but based on our latest visit it may be a long time before we decide to spend our money at this establishment. my two cents... read more

The food there was amazing. We got two vegetarian options in the God's black bean burrito with the side of house fries and curry mayo along with the Roasty veg sandwich with a side of the soup. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS and the service was great! They even accepted US dollars. Also we sat outside and i feel like it's a nice place to take someone special on a date. read more

Went a few months ago, patios were closed due to bad weather, bummer, because they seemed really nice. Will definitely try them when the weather is better. Service was awesome!! The staff was able to answer any question and make suggestions for new beers to try based on our original order. I'm glad he did because I discovered a new favourite (Spark House) Food was well cooked, seasoned and tasty. Portions a tad small for the price, but that's fine with me, left more room for beer. I can't recall now what we ordered but we started with wings and they were delicious!! What this place really has going for it is atmosphere. It's a beautiful restaurant and we really enjoyed our time spent there. I'm told they have live music on the weekends. It would be a great place to chill out with a few beers and good friends. One of the best restaurants in Peterborough, hands down. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made it that much better. I have been several times and will continue to go back. A new favourite is The Basa, a delicious spiced fish wrap, with Mango salsa and grilled to perfection. Make sure you order the fries too, bar none they are the best I've had, anywhere, ever. If you love great beer they have a very nice selection. It is very well priced, very well managed. I can't wait to go back again! read more

we were in peterborough visiting from Vancouver, my hubby took me there for a birthday lunch. I have to say, it was one of the best burger lunches I've ever had, I had the lamb burger ( i never eat lamb) and it was soon good, if we had more time, i would of gone back just to have it again. my husband had the bean burger, now he's a big man, and he loved this newer take on a veg burger. it really exceeded my expectations. The service was fast and attentive. It was clean. The food was thoughtful and sooo delicious. You have to eat here. We will for sure several times the next time we are in town.. This pub is definitely a wonderful addition to East City here in Peterborough. The menu is quite fun and different options. I have been here for lunch and dinner and everyone in my party during each visit have raved about how great their meal tasted. Sandwiches, salads and their Craft beer menu have not disappointed at all. Fries with the curry dipping sauce are very tasty and go so well with all of the delicious beers we tried....I think I have seen these ordered in the 'cone' basket by every table on multiple visits. I have noticed that the service has continued to improve since it first opened, growing pains as to be expected. My last visit was a very busy Saturday night, even the party room was packed solid. Our waiter took maybe 5-10 minutes longer than normal to take our food order and offered us to only pay for 1 meal as compensation for a small wait, Nice gesture that was unnecessary and I declined as the food and beer are worth the price. Came in by myself after shopping next door at Sobey's thought I would try their beer. Staff completely inattentive I seated myself and waited about ten minutes for the waitress to finish chatting with the bartender. Beer was nothing to right home about. Food portions are generous and they offer an interesting variety of fare beyond the usual burgers and wraps. Don't forget their Breakfast menu! Our first visit here and we went for lunch on a Friday. At the door we were asked if we had reservations, which we did not so we sat at the bar but they put us on a list for a table. Before we had even ordered, the owner was escorting us to a table. We both ordered the brisket on a bunch with fries. The sandwich was delicious and the fries are not frozen, plentiful and delicious, the only thing my husband didn't like was the slice of cheddar cheese they put on our sandwiches didn't melt. This place is a favorite among my friends. I actually crave their fish tacos...served in a soft shell with your choice of sides, these tacos are filled with lightly coated baked fish, a variety of fresh veggies, sweet salsa, spicy sauce and cheese. I had the quarter chicken dinner which was a large portion of amazing home style cooking. Crispy outside and bursting with flavour and tender and juicy inside. The sides were great too accompanied by some delicious curried mayo dip. My partner had the pulled pork on a bun and said it was the best yet in town. Great beer selection and warm atmosphere!
