Maybe I'm just not assertive enough when it comes to haircuts. I have a short, extremely curly bob, and I chose this salon because I had read the Yelp reviews that said this place was known for curly haircuts. Rose did a decent job, but nothing exceptional. I have hair that grows VERY slowly, but because my hair is so curly and wild, stylists tend to get a little scissor happy. Rose took too much off without double checking with me -- about 7 months worth of growth, which was kind of a bummer. I wanted a new shape, not necessarily a super short cut. I also felt like she was spending more time talking to the other employees than focusing on my haircut. At one point, as she was happily cutting away, I said something like, "Just so you know, it's going to curl up A LOT," and she just nodded distractedly. The styling was also not great -- way too much gel, which is what hair stylists always do when they aren't used to dealing with curly hair. The haircut turned out okay, but this wasn't the dazzling experience I was hoping for, and I won't be going back. I'm giving this 3 stars, rather than 2, because it was relatively inexpensive. I am SO GLAD I followed my gut and did not spend a mint at Badlands. I rolled into Rapunzel, Rapunzel on a whim and was greeted by Rose, a curly-hair genius. Rose herself has pin-straight hair, but don't let that fool you: she knows her stuff. I have paid WAY more for haircuts that turned out to be really, really bad. Rose was the first person who actually took the time to listen to what my hair needed, instead of weirdly pushing expensive products on me or insisting she knew better (uh, even though she definitely does). It takes a lot for me to write a Yelp review (the only other one I've written was for appauling customer service from a car company). I couldn't not write a review for this salon - I walked away from Rose with one of the best hair-cuts I've ever had. I should say that I have extremely curly hair (think Scary Spice meets Side Show Bob). That said, I have a great hairdresser back home, but had yet to find a good one in NY since moving here 3 years ago. Friends recommended the regular curly hair places, Ouidad, Deva, etc., but I really don't think you should have to pay $150 plus for a good cut. I went in to Ouidad one day to inquire and got talked into having a 'hair consultation' - which consisted of me sitting in a chair while an overly pretentious guy circled around me, poking at my head, talking about my 'aura'. It was comical and awful all at the same time. Then a friend mentioned Rapunzel Rapunzel. I'm always nervous when trying a new hairdresser (as we all are) since a bad cut with my curls can literally take years to grow out. Rose sat me down, had a quick chat. I explained I wanted it big, but still able to pull it back, with a little texture - what she called "a little rockstar!" It looked like she was taking off way too much, and I was nervous, but when I commented she just said she had the base-line and was now cutting in the texture, and to trust her. I'm glad I did - what a great cut! All of my girlfriends who have known me through the ups and downs of crazy/curly hair have said this is the best it's ever looked, and I agree. Plus, it only cost $48 dollars! I cannot recommend Rose enough, and I will definitely go back. The place isn't fancy. There are three chairs and only one washing chair. But if you're looking for a great cut, not all the fancy stuff that you end up paying for (the girl who washes, the girl who brings you your coffee), Rapunzel Rapunzel is a great bet. read more

Just got my hair done by Marc. I came in for highlights and a cut. I came in with pictures and he was able to truly make my hair look absolutely amazing. He explained what he was doing, each step, and why. He also gave me advice on what I wanted to do to my hair and what would and wouldn't work. He was also super friendly and professional. There are so many rave reviews about Rose and several word of mouth recommendations for her from acquaintances around town that I was really excited to have my hair cut, finally, after six months of diligent growing out of a bad cut. Such is my plight. I've been looking for 6 long years to replace a great curly-wavy hair stylist and I still cannot get a good cut in this town! Rose asked me what I wanted and I explained that I had been growing out a bad cut from Le Petit Chandelier (I never told her where but when I told her it was in the neighborhood, she guessed where!!) and so I wanted layers that really helped encourage my waves and curls. I have a LOT of hair and it was a bulky, long pony tail ready for some help. Though she talked a good game, my experience was that she was phoning it in. She seemed very uninterested in her work and chatted with her co-workers while cutting my hair. I had referenced the person whose hair I really liked and she remembered this client so I relaxed, thinking she knew just what I wanted. From the time I entered the salon (early AM appointment on a saturday) to when I left, including hair wash and paying, it was 35 minutes. I wouldn't mind a fast cut if it were a good one. We all have things to do. But since I left with my hair wet, I was not really able to tell what it looked like. I was never offered a chance to see the back (or even a glass of water. This is not a customer service heavy kind of place). When I got home and later, when I washed it myself, I could see that really all she had done was to layer the top layer of my hair, leaving a blunt, bulky underlayer that curled in like Toni Tenille. The overall shape was not at all what we had discussed, and it seemed to me that it was her way of cutting corners. I really felt as if i had only a partial hair cut. A few days later I returned, explaining my dissatisfaction and asking for a bit more attention. She was accommodating and nice about it, but never seemed to connect to me, to the work of my hair cut. Though she said she understood what I was unhappy with, the attempt to fix it was only slighly better. I still had bushy hair, way too much of it, and nothing cute or stylish about the shape. I went and bought thinning shears for $25 and did a better job on myself than I got at this salon. I told several friends about this and two of them told me that they had gotten great first haircuts from Rose but on the second visit they had felt invisible and had not gotten a good cut again and were reluctant to return. Bottom line: maybe she's overworked, Saturdays are long busy days and she was conserving her energy but I'm not at all impressed and would not call her an curl expert. read more

After a bad experience with Devachan in Soho, which cost me an arm and a leg, Yelp led me to Rapunzel, Rapunzel. I was skeptical since I have very fine curly hair with tight ringlets, but Rose worked her magic and gave me the layers and body I've been looking for without killing my length. She's funny, warm, and no frills--she didn't push product, which is always a bonus. This place is a gem, and if you're a curly girl, you MUST see Rose! Fantastic haircut!!! I have thick wavy hair that always brings me a little anxiety when looking for a new salon (that's within my budget). I walked by this place one day and saw "curly hair experts" written on a chalkboard outside the salon and then looked it up on yelp...I wish I had found this place sooner! I went a few months ago, so I'm not completely positive, but I think my stylist was a nice lady named Taylor. She did an amazing job! I've worn my hair in a sort of bob for over a year and despite telling other stylists the exact same description, I always come out with something different. This time, I went for a different approach. I told my stylist what I wanted done now and how I wanted it to look as I was growing out. She was good at confirming with me what I wanted and explained to me what she was going to do to make sure we were on the same page. It looked great and 3 months later it still held it's shape and looked the way I wanted it to (I usually get my hair done 6-8 weeks when it's short). Unfortunately, I travel a lot and ended up getting a trim at another salon out of state, and two weeks later, it's going in all different directions and I have to end up pulling it back most days (which is difficult at this length). I was so happy with my cut that I'm debating on taking a day trip back to Brooklyn just to have it redone at Rapunzel Rapunzel! This place is great and Taylor (if I remembered her name correctly) gave me an awesome cut that I was happy with even months after I had it done. Rose rocks! I first went to this place, on a whim, when I happened to be walking by and was sick of my hair. Best cut and color of my life. Excited to show off, i went straight out for drinks, documented it in the bar's photo booth and, the picture remains one of my husband's favorites of me to this day. I didn't live anywhere near the neighborhood, so I did not go back for about 4 years. Four years later we moved about 30 mins away, so I decide to give it another try. Another EXCELLENT hair cut. I came home and my husband said to me, that's the best cut you've had since that time before the photo booth. Seriously, my husband noticed after 4 years. And he was right! People, you just can't get a cut like this from anyone in their 20s, or maybe even 30s. This is an old school neighborhood salon with an extremely experienced owner at the helm. She is a master colorist and stylist. She's especially great for period cuts, like mod 60s through glam 80s styles. She cut some of 'em the first time around. You can quote any movie or old school film star and she gets the cut perfectly right, even without a picture. I wear 50s style bangs and they've never been better. Nor has my hair ever been a better shade of red. I have worked at one of the top beauty magazines and have had my hair cut at some of the best salons in the city. This place beats them all. Sure it's small-- does that matter? No. The vibe is warm and above all, the cut is EXCELLENT, and so is the color. Rose even cuts my super picky hipster husband's hair now too. So I went for a trim today with Rose after all the rants and raves on here, thought it'd be safe for my hair, which is recovering from past damage, or "hair baggage", as Rose puts it. Finally getting its curl back, she cut off split ends, but apparently the way she did it wasn't right for me. I was told later, at this other place I went to for coloring, that my kind of hair (or most) has to be cut dry, which is not what happened at Rapunzel. The ladies there were great at telling me how I've already damaged my hair, and kind of what I should do to fix it, but the cut itself wasn't anything special. Because my hair was cut wet, the layers actually came out uneven. Got it fixed elsewhere, but my experience here wasn't great. read more

Really unhappy with my cut and highlights here. I have long wavy/curly hair. The guy, who was not very friendly or helpful, cut it all one length. Gone were the curls. Just a big frizzy mass was left. He also dyed two random chunks up front orangey/bronze. I asked for some light brown highlights. Fail. The salon was crowded, dusty, cramped and the bathroom was not clean. I don't get why this place gets good reviews, it was really just not good at all. They were talking shit about people at other salons the whole time too. Save your cash (because it's not cheap!) and go one block over to Delilah on 4th ave instead. They fixed the botch job I had done here and I am delighted with the result! read more

I suddenly got the urge to do something totally different with my hair (winter doldrums combined with being unemployed lead to impulse beauty decisions...), so I called Rapunzel to see if I could come in the same day. I got in with Sam, who's new to the salon, but not new to hair. She was super friendly, and willing to spend a lot of time talking to me about my cut and color, which is awesome because I'm one of those "Oh, I don't know, do whatever you want" people...which can be annoying. Both Sam and Rose talked things over with me, and I got a great cut and a wonderful color I would never have tried, but am absolutely in love with. The atmosphere there is casual, friendly, and a ton of regular customers were coming in and out--always a good sign. I definitely recommend this place to anyone, and Sam is a great stylist. As a teen I dyed my hair jet-black and since tried everything to lighten it in a way that looks natural. No dice. After just one visit with Rose, that all changed. Rose knows her color and listens to you when you ask her not to give you stripey, skunky highlights. After a combination treatment of thin highlights and baliage, I left her salon with a natural looking dark espresso color. With each visit we went lighter and lighter until I am FINALLY sporting the dark chestnut tone I was born with. Rose works miracles. And her prices are incredibly fair. As a guy with a big mop of curly hair, it's often difficult to find hair salons that consistently deliver quality cuts. Rapunzel Rapunzel was a godsend when I found it in Park Slope two years ago, and I've been coming consistently every 2 months since. Not a single bad cut in that time frame - and I've actually asked for radically different things from afro maintenace to hipster cockatoo to short and close. Rose is fantastic (if a little distracted at times), and can give you exactly the style you like even if you're unclear yourself. Definetley 10 stars if I could give them. Rose is a pro and funny. Upbeat. However it is not her personality that I suggest you go to her, it is her color work. Superb. I had color that was washing out and I liked my ends, asked to match the ends plus darken roots only (cover grey) and spice up with some subtle highlights. Rose did my wedding make-up and hair, and she did a fantastic job! She knew all the tricks to make my curly, long hair look full but not frizzy. She looked at some sample pictures and made her own creation, which was even better. I brought in some flowers, and she braided my hair into a half-up, half-down style, and then wove the flowers in. She even let me borrow the lipstick she used for the rest of the night and bring it in a few days later. I got so many compliments! Her prices were extremely reasonable, about a quarter of what others were charging for wedding hair and make-up. I am definitely coming back here for a haircut! read more

I went to NY for a friend's wedding and wanted to fix a bad cut I got about a month ago. I had Mark as my stylist, and he did a great job. He sat me down and we briefly spoke about what I was looking for and he noticed I was a bit concerned with cutting my hair too short, so he reassured me of what he would do and the expected outcome. The shampoo was quick and he talked me through the cut as he was doing it, "What I'm doing is called dusting" he said, as he made the ripped effect my hair had look less extreme. My appointment was at 11 and I got in the chair about 11:15 which is the only thing I could complain about...though, the conversation was lively and fun (it's a small place) so there's no real complaint. Bottom line, it was a fun experience, the cut looked good and still does, and it was reasonably priced (right under $50 pre-tip). read more

He even came to the salon earlier than typical business hours on my wedding day to do my hair. I used to go to Devachan in downtown Manhattan because I didn't trust anyone else to do my hair after a series of disastrous cuts. I could only go about twice a year, though, since it was so expensive. After reading about Rapunzel Rapunzel on Yelp, I decided to give it a try, because I was tired of paying hundreds of dollars just for a hair cut. Rose cut my hair really well and gave it a nice shape that will grow out properly. I have mixed curl pattern hair (tighter curls in the front, looser in the back), and she made sure to account for the differing spring of each part of my hair as she cut it. The only thing that could have been better was the product that she put in my hair. Throughout the day afterwards, my hair got super puffy, even though the weather was dry. When I washed and styled my hair that night, though, it was completely fine, so I have no regrets! Another note-- hair cuts for women are $55 there now, although some online postings still have it as $48. Still a bargain for the quality of hair cut. read more
