This is like the second time I had Burmese food. Can't really complain about something I've never tried too much of regularly. The chicken biryani was flavorful. Chicken was slow-cooked with slightly sweet rice and raisins. The pad thai tasted very similar to thai pad thai. The tea salad was ok...first time eaters may not be used to it having a bit more oil than American or japanese salads Hosts were super attentive to get us seated before the next table due to arrive in an hour but our waitress looked slightly displeased that we didn't get started with any drinks, which can run 12 bucks for a thing of coconut juice. Average outing for lunch on a Friday afternoon. I gave my wife overhype about Burmese food as my ancestors were from Rangoon (Burma). Nevertheless to my disappointment, this place had no food close to authentic Burmese cuisine. Atho, Moinga, Bejo and other authentic Burmese food were missing from their cuisine. May be due to the unavailability of ingredients. But the food we ordered such as Nan Gyi Dok - Rice noodles with coconut sauce chicken curry, egg with veggies on it was pretty good. It was not enough for 2. I ordered their house special chilli sauce which paired well. Brown rice with Rangoon chicken curry was a disaster. The curry was watery with chunks of onion and the sauce was too bland. Definitely regret ordering this dish. Wife wanted to try fried rice but instead I made her to eat this curry. Overall it's pricey and the quantity should be improved. Felt 55$ for 2 people with tips was pretty high that too for an average outing at this restaurant. Oh my god, the service here was AMAZING! We came on Saturday evening and were blessed to have a sweet waitress with two pink hair strands. She was the sweetest ever and gave us amazing recommendations based on what we liked. She took extra time to explain dishes to us and what they would be like. The ambiance was lovely and lively. The room lights were dim, which was a perfect vibe for dinner. I ordered the Tea Leaf salad, which was amazing; I kept going back for more. It tasted healthy while having a perfect amount of flavor. For my entree, I ordered Basil Chili Chicken with coconut rice. I swear I could have eaten a massive bowl of just that coconut rice. It was soft and fluffy, with the perfect amount of flavor and sweetness. It made all the other food taste even better. The chicken was great as well! We got the tea leaf salad, a staple at any Burmese restaurant, which was yummy and full of crunchy textures (4/5). Our server recommended the salt and pepper chicken (3/5), but I personally thought it was too much breading for the amount of meat, and a little dry. The samosas were large and perfectly spiced; I'd get these again. We also ordered a sizzling beef dish which I found a bit salty (3/5), although it pairs well with the yummy coconut rice. The only downside is that parking in University is tough; however I love that the restaurant takes reservations! For those who can trek to Burma Superstar in the city or Alameda, I prefer that restaurant. The restaurant itself had dim lighting and a cozy family gathering ambience with lots of kids and large groups present. Then the host asked us if we minded moving to the window table so they could seat a party of 4 by pushing our table together with the next. We had already placed our order and she said they could bring it over to the new window table so we agreed. The table of four and a bunch of tables got their food before us even though we ordered before them. It was taking a long time so we asked for them to check on our order (especially because the salad should've come quickly). I think they messed up because of the table change which was not our fault. They finally brought all the food and gave us free wine to apologize. It was off-putting but got resolved after the third person checked on our order. The tea leaf salad was my favorite. It was citrusy, crunchy, and flavorful. We also had the Palata which comes with chicken curry which was really good. The palata was fried and chewy and paired beautifully with the coconuty chicken curry. The curried pork curry was good but I preferred the chicken curry. It was a little tangy, nutty, savory with plenty of tea leaves, but not much of anything else other than a bit of corn, fried garlic, and cabbage leaves. Came here for my friend's birthday and they had rude and inattentive service even though we were only one of three tables that they were serving. Everything is done via QR code. My pratha bread was cold and so was the curry dipping sauce. My chicken noodles soup had hardly any noodles in it and once again couldn't they bother to warm it up? My friend had the pad thai and it was also cold. The hot tea for over $4 was just hor water and you choose your own tea bag. No refills when my friend asked. I was here to celebrate one of my friends birthdays. We had reserved earlier and everyone was seated. The door was kept open so it was feeling very cold as our table was close to it. Our server was good and took good care of us based on our orders and also we brought our own cake. All we asked is to bring it after our dining is over. I feel every restaurant should say that they charge just to bring the cake ( which is brought by the customer), outside. We stopped by Rangoon Ruby for lunch with some family and friends. Because of the size of the group, we were able to order several dishes. It was all fine - not awesome, just fine. We began with three appetizers, the samosas, palata, and tea leaf salad. The best of these was the samosas, which were hot and nicely flavored. The palata was good, but we ordered with lamb curry rather than the chicken curry and the big chunks of lamb (ordinarily a good thing in a standalone dish) made it difficult to dip the bread into the dip. The tea leaf salad was more leafy and less nutty/seedy for my taste. For our entrees, we split the Burmese Pad Thai, Basil Chili Lamb, and Rangoon Chicken Curry. Food: 3/5 - Noodle with Pork ($17)-- tossed noodles in garlic with added BBQ pork. - Monk Hingar/Catfish Chowder ($17.50)-- nothing special. Heads up, don't expect to see any catfish pieces. - Country Style Beef Curry ($22.50)-- had a good flavor. Look as though they attempted to heat it up in the microwave but did not do a good job. They have a very nice eating area outside, and the menu is on the wall near the entrance for easy reference. Pretty convenient. Inside was nicely decorated and the wait staff were very friendly and helpful. Do you know how some restaurants have the tap water in a wine bottle or something similar? Well, this place has bottles of water that are about the size of wine bottles. They turn out to be $8.00! I think they should change it up and have the new bottles in a fridge, and have a pitcher of ice water. Now for the food. I tried the Burmese chicken salad. It comes with lettuce,fried chicken, won ton strips, tamarind dressing, cilantro and other veggies. They mix it at the table for you, and it has a spicy red dressing. We had never eaten here before, but we thought the taste of the dishes was exceptional. We had Pad Thai, Chicken Curry, Burmese-India rice, and for dessert, the House Made Sticky Rice. We ate on a Wed night. The curry is different because it is not a creamy sauce. The portions are moderately sized, and the Burmese rice really only serves one. I first experienced the black sticky rice dessert in Vietnam-Cambodia just before the pandemic, so I was wondering how Rangoon's would compare. I think their rice was a little under-cooked, because the grains were slightly hard. Still enjoyable, but because of the hardness, I would not recommend. The only real problems I had with the restaurant were that (a) the noise level was really difficult for our old ears, so next time we will eat outside, which looks comfortable. And (b) because everything is ordered via app, you don't really have a waiter and no one really checks in on you regularly. It felt kind of like eating take out inside a restaurant. Fortunately as Sindhu B. noted, we avoided the water bottle charge by asking before opening it. I agree with him, they should not set the table with a bottle of water that is not complimentary. I hate it when hotels do that to you, so hope Rangoon takes note of this suggestion. read more
