The waiter didn't tell us that there was a charge when we requested. He should have at least informed us since most restaurants don't charge you. If we knew, we would have only gotten one. We have enjoyed Rangoon Ruby's cuisine for many years. This evening, we were disappointed with our experience. We showed up at around 5:15 PM without a reservation. The restaurant was 90% empty. The host, a young man, checked his reservation list and asked us if we could finish within an hour. We said "yes," but feel like that is not a question that should be asked of guests. If you really think it is a risk to seat us in your empty restaurant, then feel free to turn us away so we can go elsewhere. As for the food, everything was fine. Medium spicy was a good level spice for us. I liked the lemongrass chicken. My kid enjoyed his sesame chicken. The fiery tofu used to be better. The country beef curry was not great. The curry was lukewarm... and part of it was cold. I bit into a huge chunk of pure fat. The beef was not tender. The potato cubes served as filler and didn't have much flavor. I've had much better beef curries at Malaysian and Thai restaurants. I feel like we've ordered this dish in the past, but it has never disappointed us like it did tonight. Next time we'll go with the beef kebat. When we finished and left at 6:09pm, the restaurant was about 40% filled. read more

Average outing for lunch on a Friday afternoon. I gave my wife overhype about Burmese food as my ancestors were from Rangoon (Burma). Nevertheless to my disappointment, this place had no food close to authentic Burmese cuisine. Atho, Moinga, Bejo and other authentic Burmese food were missing from their cuisine. May be due to the unavailability of ingredients. But the food we ordered such as Nan Gyi Dok - Rice noodles with coconut sauce chicken curry, egg with veggies on it was pretty good. It was not enough for 2. I ordered their house special chilli sauce which paired well. Brown rice with Rangoon chicken curry was a disaster. The curry was watery with chunks of onion and the sauce was too bland. Definitely regret ordering this dish. Wife wanted to try fried rice but instead I made her to eat this curry. Overall it's pricey and the quantity should be improved. Felt 55$ for 2 people with tips was pretty high that too for an average outing at this restaurant. Service was pretty good and ambiance was nice as well. Parking might be tricky but if you're in on a Friday afternoon or evening, this place gets crowded. read more

I love this place! This is my go-to when getting Burmese food in Palo Alto. I love all their Burmese dishes like mohinga, coconut noodle soup, and their noodle salads. The food is fairly tasty, and rather interesting, but the portion sizes feel a tad small for what you're paying, especially compared to the pho and ramen restaurants nearby. Oh my god, the service here was AMAZING! We came on Saturday evening and were blessed to have a sweet waitress with two pink hair strands. She was the sweetest ever and gave us amazing recommendations based on what we liked. She took extra time to explain dishes to us and what they would be like. The ambiance was lovely and lively. The room lights were dim, which was a perfect vibe for dinner. I ordered the Tea Leaf salad, which was amazing; I kept going back for more. It tasted healthy while having a perfect amount of flavor. For my entree, I ordered Basil Chili Chicken with coconut rice. I swear I could have eaten a massive bowl of just that coconut rice. It was soft and fluffy, with the perfect amount of flavor and sweetness. It made all the other food taste even better. The chicken was great as well! Our server recommended the salt and pepper chicken (3/5), but I personally thought it was too much breading for the amount of meat, and a little dry. The samosas were large and perfectly spiced; I'd get these again. We also ordered a sizzling beef dish which I found a bit salty (3/5), although it pairs well with the yummy coconut rice. The only downside is that parking in University is tough; however I love that the restaurant takes reservations! It was a little tangy, nutty, savory with plenty of tea leaves, but not much of anything else other than a bit of corn, fried garlic, and cabbage leaves. Both the waiter and menu said there would be dried shrimp in it, but I didn't notice any. Flavor was great. Palata (3/5) - similar to a roti or a layered pancake. It came served with a bit of coconut chicken curry Ohnoh kwat swe (2/5)- a modest pot of curry with a bit of chicken and noodle. I wished they'd packed it with more goodies. (3 stars mostly for service) I had a reservation for 2 people on a Friday night and got seated promptly even though we came early. The restaurant itself had dim lighting and a cozy family gathering ambience with lots of kids and large groups present. Then the host asked us if we minded moving to the window table so they could seat a party of 4 by pushing our table together with the next. We had already placed our order and she said they could bring it over to the new window table so we agreed. The table of four and a bunch of tables got their food before us even though we ordered before them. It was taking a long time so we asked for them to check on our order (especially because the salad should've come quickly). I think they messed up because of the table change which was not our fault. They finally brought all the food and gave us free wine to apologize. It was off-putting but got resolved after the third person checked on our order. The tea leaf salad was my favorite. It was citrusy, crunchy, and flavorful. We also had the Palata which comes with chicken curry which was really good. The palata was fried and chewy and paired beautifully with the coconuty chicken curry. The curried pork curry was good but I preferred the chicken curry. Came here for my friend's birthday and they had rude and inattentive service even though we were only one of three tables that they were serving. Everything is done via QR code. My pratha bread was cold and so was the curry dipping sauce. My chicken noodles soup had hardly any noodles in it and once again couldn't they bother to warm it up? My friend had the pad thai and it was also cold. The hot tea for over $4 was just hor water and you choose your own tea bag. No refills when my friend asked. Tried Rangoon Ruby in PA for lunch and it's a nice Burmese restaurant. The dishes were good one of the better tea leaf salads I have had in the Bay. Samosa and tea leaf salad was my favorite. The curry beef was good. Service was ok but they could if paid attention for folks that ordered curry or needed a spoon. I was here to celebrate one of my friends birthdays. We had reserved earlier and everyone was seated. The door was kept open so it was feeling very cold as our table was close to it. Our server was good and took good care of us based on our orders and also we brought our own cake. All we asked is to bring it after our dining is over. I feel every restaurant should say that they charge just to bring the cake ( which is brought by the customer), outside. Anyhow, after finishing the dinner and cake cutting by ourselves, and we don't know when the bill came it had all kinds of taxes besides the ones we usually see. It disappointed us and we checked on it. Our server disappeared but another person from the staff spoke to their manager and sorted it out for us. We began with three appetizers, the samosas, palata, and tea leaf salad. The best of these was the samosas, which were hot and nicely flavored. The palata was good, but we ordered with lamb curry rather than the chicken curry and the big chunks of lamb (ordinarily a good thing in a standalone dish) made it difficult to dip the bread into the dip. The tea leaf salad was more leafy and less nutty/seedy for my taste. For our entrees, we split the Burmese Pad Thai, Basil Chili Lamb, and Rangoon Chicken Curry. Food: 3/5 - Noodle with Pork ($17)-- tossed noodles in garlic with added BBQ pork. - Monk Hingar/Catfish Chowder ($17.50)-- nothing special. Heads up, don't expect to see any catfish pieces. - Country Style Beef Curry ($22.50)-- had a good flavor. Look as though they attempted to heat it up in the microwave but did not do a good job. When the dish arrived at our table, some of the beef pieces were still cold inside. - Eggplant & Garlic ( $17)-- stir fried eggplant with oyster sauce. I enjoyed the temperature of the food. Well, this place has bottles of water that are about the size of wine bottles. They turn out to be $8.00! I think they should change it up and have the new bottles in a fridge, and have a pitcher of ice water. Now for the food. I tried the Burmese chicken salad.
