This was a great dinner, and I would absolutely come back! The space is beautiful! The bar setup is especially nice and gives the whole place an elevated vibe that still feels comfortable. We ordered the Red Shrimp "Karwari," Mango Butter Chicken, Chicken Biryani, garlic naan, and two cocktails. The shrimp had an incredible kick!! Very spicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I personally loved the heat, but if you're spice-sensitive, just be warned it's not mild.. The standout of the night though was the biryani. Fragrant and delicious. The rice had great texture and flavor throughout, and it felt like the most cohesive and well-executed dish on the table. The butter chicken was just okay in comparison. It was creamy and pleasant, but it didn't have the same wow factor as the shrimp or biryani. Not bad.. just overshadowed by the stronger dishes. The cocktails were creative and well crafted. The Mango Mule was bright and refreshing, a perfect match for the spicy dishes! Service was fine but nothing particularly warm or memorable. My only real service note was that after finishing our shrimp starter, our dirty silverware wasn't cleared or replaced. We ended up keeping and reusing it for the rest of the meal, which felt like a small but noticeable miss, especially at this price point. The total came to $165 for two, so it's not inexpensive. That said, the quality of the food, especially the biryani and shrimp, makes it worth returning.

I grew up watching Khana Khazana by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor on TV (Sanjeev Kapoor was basically part of my culinary childhood), so I really wanted to love this place. And to be fair: the ambience is gorgeous, very "special occasion" energy, and it's right in the middle of downtown Palo Alto. Service was also super attentive. But...the food (at least the vegetarian dishes we tried) was not a home run. Smoked Ricotta "Galouti" -- I love the idea + the story behind galouti kababs, but this didn't hit the "melt-in-mouth / wow" note I was hoping for. Eggplant Bharta -- fine, but not memorable. Shaam Savera -- paneer-stuffed spinach dumplings in tomato sauce sounds magical; tasted more like "nice concept, okay execution." Lalla Mussa Dal -- this was probably the safest bet of the bunch: rich, slow-simmered, comforting... still not enough to carry the meal. Jackfruit Biryani -- again, fine, but I wanted more aroma + depth (and that sealed-dum drama). This place is a vibe. The food is not. If the name on the door weren't Sanjeev Kapoor, I'd call it an expensive, aesthetically pleasing meal that I wouldn't repeat.

Came here for a business dinner and had my first Indian food beyond chicken tikka marsala. Matthew was our server, and he went above and beyond for us. The food was very good, including the three natives of India who were with us and loved it. There were many dishes ordered to be shared, but the items I had were the lamb, garlic naan, panipuri, jackfruit and avocado taco, and paneer. I burned my mouth due to the spice on a beef taco after I explained I am extra white and can't handle spice and my colleagues told me it wasn't spicy at all. Well, they are Indian and to them it wasn't spicy but my mouth was burning so I was brought yogurt to cool it off. It was my birthday the next day so I was brought a raspberry cheesecake with a lit candle. We were surprised by a complimentary dessert that was shared with everyone. I don't know what it was called, but it had gold leaf and rose syrup on it with berries and was smooth like custard. It was delicious. Never asked what I wanted to drink and when I asked for milk when my mouth was burning up, told they didn't have any. Water kept being refilled though.

Hands down, the best North Indian Non-vegetarian food in the Bay area with great ambience! We've been here so many times and always come back for their mango butter chicken, chicken biryani, mutton biryani and chicken kebabs. First time with friends we tried their- 1. Edamame pani puri- Loved the flavors. Served uniquely. Crisp puris. Great purple pani. Loved it! Very savory and not sweet at all. 2. Prawns- Three medium sized prawns, nice charring from the tandoor but missed the mark on seasoning and butteryness. Felt dry. 3. Ricotta galaouti kebab- Ricotta is creamy, slightly tangy and has a fuller flavor like homemade paneer but mushier. These kebabs were exactly dahi ke kebab (hung curd/greek yougurt kebabs) with too much tang. 4. Salli chicken- The best! Moist, rich, creamy. Get this! For mains, we had: 1. Shyam savera- Gravy wasn't up to the standard. The cottage cheese dumplings were creamy but the gravy was just pureed tomatoes and tasted of nothing else. 2. Nalli Nihari- Soft, moist, fall off the bone meat but I've had the best at Yellow Chilli, Danville. The meat touching the bone was under seasoned here. 3. Truffle naan- Not stuffed with truffles or anything. Truffle oil was just brushed over the tiny naans. 4. Garlic naan, Laccha parantha- They were good. The chicken biryani was amazing. Probably the best biryani in the bay area. For desserts my husband ordered the mishti doi. His bengali roots were excited to try this one but it turned out to be sweet greek yougurt so he sent it back and got the gulab jamun dessert instead. The rabri had a wierd tang so none of us had the rabri. The gulab jamun was awesome though. The person who took our order was cold on our first visit. The person delivering food to our table was nice. However, even an okay-ish kinda service is acceptable if the food is the best bang for your buck and outright delicious. However, having visited multiple times, I can say that their service has improved. Their flavors are so on point for the non vegetarian appetizers! Seasonings and what you write on the menu and what comes on the plate is SO important and they deliver! The portions are okay though. Mango butter chicken is the best dish on their menu. Pair it with naan or chicken/mutton biryani. Gulab jamun is a must try! Not your ordinary gulab jamun! It has gulkand in the bottom. Can't wait to visit! Love it here!

Sanjeev Kapoor is a renowned Indian chef with his own TV program, and his restaurant Khazana in downtown Palo Alto features creative, refined takes on Indian dishes in an elegant setting. Coming in a big group, we got to sit in a private room in the back of the restaurant, and the service was quick and hospitable. To start, the Bedgi Chilli Chicken were four pieces of boneless dark meat chicken tikka in a marinade of spicy bedgi chili and yogurt, cooked to juicy perfection in a tandoor and served with mint chutney and cabbage salad, which balanced out the spicy flavor of the chicken. For our mains, the Mango Butter Chicken was a unique take on the classic North Indian curry, made of chicken tikka in a creamy tomato curry mixed with Alphonso mango. There wasn't a ton of mango flavor in this dish, but the mango seemed to have balanced out the typically rich butter sauce. One super unique dish was the Malabari Prawn Sourdough, a spicy Keralan coconut milk curry with prawns, served in a hollowed out sourdough bread bowl. The curry was full of dried chilies, mustard seeds, and curry leaves and had lots of heat, and the soft, chewy bread soaked up the sauce nicely! Finally, we had two selections from Khazana's Signature Selection. The Lalla Musa Dal was a thick, creamy stew of green/black lentils cooked with cream and butter; and the Shaam Savera was three spinach and cottage cheese dumplings served in a creamy cashew and tomato gravy. All the curries went nicely with the Bread Basket, which came with freshly-made naan, lachha paratha, and garlic cheese kulcha. My favorite breads were the layered lachha paratha for dipping into the curries; as well as the garlic cheese kulcha, which had a delightfully chewy, cheesy filling. We also tried the Khamiri Truffle Naan, which was brushed with truffle oil but didn't have a ton of truffle flavor. Overall, the food here was delicious and beautifully presented, and the dishes showcased authentic Indian flavors but presented in creative ways. My favorite items included the tomato cashew Shaam Savera curry, the spicy Malabari Prawn coconut curry in a sourdough bread bowl, and the chewy Garlic Cheese Kulcha, but everything was on point! The only downside is that the menu prices are quite high, but that's certainly not surprising for a fine dining restaurant in Palo Alto.

Came here for the first time and we were celebrating my parents anniversary.. we had a reservation so we got seated right away. We have a baby but we're not allowed to take the stroller to the table so we ended up putting it in the reception area. The restaurant is a big space ... and it was solid packed on a weekday. The ambience is very beautiful. Our server took very long to come to us to get our initial orders which was hard with kids. Eventually they came and we placed our orders. When our glasses were empty, they were not filled til the very end of our meal - service overall wasn't great at all. We ordered a few different things 3-4 appetizers and few mains. The appetizers were really good but the mains were seriously underwhelming. The mains were 80% sauce as you can see from the pictures. Anyway.. we also ordered some desserts at the end and honestly that was the best part of the meal.. the jamun with rabri was delicious along with the motichoor cheesecake was a nice twist on traditional desserts. Overall the food was ok but not too happy with the service at all.

Drinks were really good - bold Indian flavors but well balanced. Their menu is not your traditional Indian menu so if you are looking for classic indian eats then you'll be disappointed. Interior was chic and elegant - overall nice ambiance. Service was good and attentive. Highlights were - Chana Jor Crumpet (crispy; went well with the tangy sauce), Ancho Chilli Paneer Tikka, and Stuffed Dum Aloo Nazakat (creamy and delicate). The portion size for large plates was actually not enough for 2 people. Overall a good experience.

My parents and I visited Khazana when we were visiting West Coast for dinner and it was an amazing culinary experience. We made the reservation before hand which helped us to secure a table upon arrival. We ordered a mushroom appetizer which was absolutely delicious, for some reason I cannot find the dish on the web version of the menu, and cannot recollect the name, but pls do try it if you love mushrooms, you will not be disappointed. For main course, we ordered Saffron Paneer Cascade along with garlic naan and tandoori roti and it was probably the best dish that we tried at Khazana! The paneer would literally melt in your mouth and each bite had rich flavor of saffron! Do try this place if you are in the Palo Alto neighborhood. The ambiance is also very classy, modern and perfect for good family time!

My partner and I met a couple of friends here for a weekday dinner. The restaurant was pretty busy considering it was a weekday. Khazana, a sister restaurant to the Yellow Chili in Santa Clara, showcases the culinary expertise of Chef Sanjeev Kapoor. I found my experience at Khazana to be quite positive, particularly due to the outstanding service, which surpassed that of its sister establishment. The dishes we ordered were not only delicious but also beautifully presented. It's great to note that many of us took home leftovers, testament to the generous portion sizes. Additionally, the cocktails and mocktails were excellently crafted--definitely worth trying! I highly recommend visiting Khazana for a delightful dining experience. Recommendations: * Beet Root Croquettes * Trio Bread Basket * Baked Cauliflower Musallam * 'Malabari ' Prawn in Sourdough Bowl * Burrata, Truffled 'Saag,' Magaz Crisps

My husband and I returned to this restaurant to celebrate our 2-year wedding anniversary--and it couldn't have been more perfect. This place holds a very special meaning for us, because years ago it was the restaurant where we had our very first date and shared our first dinner together. The space has changed since then and the name is different now, but the feeling of warmth and connection hasn't changed at all. Even though we don't often dine on Indian cuisine, every dish surprised us in the best way. The flavors were rich, layered, and authentic--each bite reminded us why good food feels like a form of love. From the spices to the presentation, everything felt thoughtfully prepared and beautifully balanced. Our server, Sumit (or close to that spelling!), made the experience even better. He was kind, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being intrusive. His recommendations were spot-on, and you could tell he really cared about making the evening memorable. If you're looking for delicious food, heartfelt service, or a place to celebrate something meaningful--this restaurant is a wonderful choice. We left full, happy, and reminded of how special it is to return to where love first began.

I got there around 5:30, no reservations and the restaurant only had a few patrons, so we got seated right away. It took a few minutes for someone to come out and greet us once we got seated. Strangely, we weren't sure who our server was all night. We placed our drink, appetizer and mains order with the first person who came by. Our appetizer, Chicken Varki came out. It was nice presented and included four large pieces of very tender chicken breast. Nicely seasoned and came with a green chutney. The fried potatoes were a nice touch and are positioned as a big part of the dish but it was more for show. I would recommend this starter; it was flling. We didn't get our mains until about 20 mins later. The restaurant was starting to get full but wasn't super full. I can appreciate that they were making our food real time but it was a little odd that no one checked on us for that long period. For our mains, we ordered the Burrata Truffled Saag. It was delicious; the burrata is a nice touch. The spinach was pretty fresh. It had a different texture- not creamy but finely chopped. This was a good portion size, enough to feed 3. The final dish was the Malabari Shrimp in a sourdough bread bowl. I appreciated the creativity- never have I had an Indian dish in a sourdough bowl, but the dish didn't hit the mark. The bread bowl was soggy and just wasn't a good vehicle for the food. The dish was also not as expected; I was hoping for more of a smooth gravy with coconut milk goodness but it was in a sauce that resembled blended lentils- it was textured and not smooth and maybe had a little too much going on with saffron, coconut milk and a tadka. The shrimps were nice and juicy but I wouldn't order this again. We had to order rice to eat with the dish. Service as not bad, could use a little improvement - maybe more periodic check-ins. The restaurant has a small bar- 6 seats and a very nice open setting. I'd probably give it 3.5 stars.

Loved the menu on Valentine's Day! I am more in love with fusion of Indian spices with alcohol. Pooja was serving us and is a delight to interact with her. Toll the spot next to the entrance and was people watching while chatting away to glory with that exquisite experience of aromatic and delicious food.

Tried Khazana by Sanjeev Kapoor in Palo Alto and honestly, it exceeded my expectations. At most upscale Indian spots, the food often takes a back seat to the ambiance--but here, both delivered. We started with a few appetizers. The Galouti Kebab (vegetarian) stood out--incredibly flavorful, a bit gooey in bite as it should be . Still, making a vegetarian version of a traditionally meat-based dish is no easy feat, and this was impressive. The Taco appetizer, on the other hand, was forgettable--bland and skippable. Quantity for both the appetizer was less. The main course curries were the real stars--rich, flavorful, and served in generous portions. Definitely not your typical "fine-dining" small plates. The bread basket was fresh and nicely done too. The space itself is huge and beautifully designed, with both an elegant indoor setting and outdoor seating available--perfect for groups or a nice dinner out. A solid new entrant in the fine Indian dining scene in the Bay Area--definitely worth a visit.

But how's the food? Absolutely delicious. This is a place you have to come with a group to try more things. We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes we tried, and it's great to see the restaurant continue experimenting with creative vegetarian options. "I Dream of Tahini" stood out as a unique non-alcoholic sesame-based drink--very thick, nutty, and definitely tahini-forward. The Methi Matar Shami Kebab is a must-try for vegetarians, and the Tender Jackfruit Slider continues to be one of their best appetizers and a dish that has clearly stood the test of time. We booked specifically because the dinner options included an a la carte menu, but the execution was terrible from start to finish. Despite having a reservation, we waited 15 minutes just to be seated. Once at the table, we sat for another 30 minutes without even being served water. It took a full 50 minutes before anyone explained the menu or took our order. When the appetizers finally arrived, one was cold to the core and incredibly chewy. We asked for a replacement, but it seemed like they just microwaved the same dish and sent it back. The mains were no better. They didn't even provide fresh plates for the main course. The garlic naan was inconsistent - simultaneously too chewy to eat and so crispy in spots that it crumbled everywhere. We also never received the 'Ruby Guava Zing' that was promised on the menu. The final straw was the dessert: the macaron was raw on the inside. By that point, we were so tired and frustrated that we didn't even have the energy to ask for a replacement. We just wanted to pay the bill and get out. It is clear they cannot manage scale on busy nights. Highly recommend avoiding this place on holidays.

Ordered food to be delivered and it was honestly one of the best meals I've had in a while…read more First, the samosas were delicious. I don't typically like samosas because in my mind they should be crisp and not heavy, and they always end up being doughy and hard. These are lighter and crispier than normal and super enjoyable. The dahi puri chaat was so good. I love that everything was packed in separate small containers so that everything stayed crisp - I was most worried that this would be soggy when it arrived. My mom was craving biryani, and this did not disappoint. The rice was tender without being soggy, everything was very flavorful and not too spicy. Someone else noted that the butter chicken was the best they'd ever had and I concur. It's sweet, savory and there's tons of kasuri methi in it to give it the most perfect flavor. They were also very generous with the chicken, so I didn't find myself fishing around in a container full of sauce looking for small pieces of meat. My only complaint about this was that the containers were quite small for the price. Garlic naan was my mom's least favorite thing, but I thought it was great. She prefers her naan to be very fluffy, and I prefer mine to be thinner and more on the crisp/chewy side, which this is. Not a ton of garlic flavor, but enough to add a little something to the butter chicken. I would probably go with plain naan next time though. This meal was so good that my husband and I fought over the leftovers. I was trying to hoard them so that I could bring them to work for lunch and he was trying to eat them the next day. I truly almost doordashed from this place 2 days in a row, it's that good. Can't wait for my next meal from Tilak!
