Great place, staff and unbelievable selection of board games along either side a super friendly staff

Randolph's was a fun boardgame bar with interesting drinks and a huge selection of games. We didn't end up getting any of the did but we had a couple of different drinks, which were all good. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the games and we were able to find something that we haven't had a chance to play before. Inside it was a little noisy but otherwise it was a very laid back and casual. Overall quite an enjoyable experience! read more

You know a review is never going to be great when you make an account to write about it. We came to Randolph Pub on a whim to give it a try. We were able to get a seat despite not having a reservation however, we're stuck in a corner under the bar. The service of the waiter was great and we had a good time playing the board game they brought to us. There was a good amount of people and everyone was having fun. The food was TERRIBLE. My wife ordered a grilled cheese that lacked any cheese and my Pulled Pork Sandwich was anything more then mediocre. Be careful! There's a cover charge they won't tell you about until it's time to pay!! read more

I love the concept of this place. 5$ and you get to try out any board game you want with friends. We tried Jokes de Papa, L'osti de jeu, a jenga lookalike with wiry metal sticks, and Marrakech a sort of monopoly type game with money and rugs. Jokes de papa is about making your opponents laugh with lame dad jokes. L'osti de jeu is cards against humanity but in Quebecois. The jenga lookalike is that you have to balance metal rods until you have no more rods left. Marrakech is about putting down rugs and trying to make your opponents land on them so they have to pay you money. We all really enjoyed ourselves. It's just fun to play games as a group and get served and explained the rules. However, the food does fall flat. There's nothing really special about it and it's small portions to protect the games. Same goes for drinks, no pitchers to share, only large format. Make sure to get there early as they don't take reservations and the lineups are insane! read more

Lots of fun! Went with my girlfriend at the time for date night and between the drinks and the games, we had a great time.

We came here right when they opened on a Tuesday, so I can't comment on the crowd, noise level, etc., as we were almost the only people in there. This place is a great time-killer. Drinks + an endless supply of games. What more could you ask for?! We picked games we had never played before, and they have someone on staff who explains the game if you prefer. They also put the game back for you once you're done (I guess they have them arranged in a certain way). The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because there is a per person charge to be able to play the games, and I just think that's excessive when you're spending money on booze & food. Why not have an approach like comedy clubs, where there is a minimum purchase, and if that isn't met THEN charge the game-playing fee. That said, it's not terribly unreasonable, and is much less expensive than buying the games yourself, but just tacks on to an already pricey tab if you're actually drinking. read more

Some drinks are served in Erlenmeyer flasks, which is pretty cute. There are some vegan food options such as crudites and hummus, tacos, empanadas. I love board games so it didn't take much for me to enjoy this pub! Sooo many board games available, you wouldn't be able to go through all of them if you came every day. The game masters are very knowledgeable and explain very well. And I love how good they are at picking the right game for you tailored to your group and preferences. You also have the choice to buy games that you like directly at the pub. However, I cannot give Randolph more stars for a few reasons. First of all, the line. Sometimes you have to wait for hours. It just destroys the mood. Second, the food. Nothing extraordinary, some probably microwave-made. Third, the noise. When it's really busy, it can get pretty annoying when you're playing a game. And last but not least, the burden on the wallet. The drinks and food are not too cheap, and you have to get one every hour. If you play for 4 hours, it adds up to 40-50+$ easily. Plus of course the 5$ cover charge. If you're 4 people playing 2-3 games for 3 hours, you can probably buy those games with the money that you spend. As a cheap Asian student, this is a huge downside for me. But if you're loaded, then consider this review as a 4.7 stars, highly recommended :) read more

With over 1,000 different games to choose from, your time at Randolph will be anything but boring! Their staff is friendly, welcoming and - super important - knowledgeable about every game in the place! If you don't know what to play, they'll gladly give you some suggestions, will take the time to sit down with you and explain the rules, and will answer any questions you may have throughout. The drink prices are average and their menu is also getting better. Since they opened last fall, they've already added on a number of nibble items and are now equipped with a full bar. Make sure to try one of their freshly baked cookies; they're sinfully delicious!!! Oh. And here's a tip for the social/group game lovers: every Wednesday evening is their big Loup Garou game (werewolf). Starts at 7pm and is played on the top floor. Just keep in mind that most players will be francophone. But seriously, don't be intimidated. It's an absolute blast! read more

What an interesting concept for a bar! For a $5 you can play board games to your heart's content. Not a board game person? Nothing to worry about as there are consultants on hand to make recommendations based on your interests. If you are an avid gamer then you'll be in heaven as the walls are lined with tons of board games. Drink prices are on par for Montreal bars. They also are adequately strong. You could really taste the whisky in my Irish hot chocolate so I felt that I got my money's worth. There is also a decent food menu. The prices are very reasonable but I do wish the portions were slightly bigger. I had the bacon mac and cheese and while it was tasty (and cheesy) I still wasn't full when all was said and done. It is popular and since it is small it gets crowded very early. I came for happy hour and by 7 or so it was full so come as early as you can. My guess is that weekends are way worse. read more

Great spot to start a night out. You can take a bite, a drink and a game with friends. The food is not... Bad...But at least they didn't burn the beer. So I guess it's ok. The fee to play a game was not applied to the food. Unlike many other reviews have suggested. I felt a bit grossed out when I realized I was playing a card game...Eating nacho with my hands. I guess they don't clean decks between the clients. So overall. The food is too pricy for what it is. If you only playing 1 game. You could have probably bought it with the combine fee money. With all of that said. I still had fun. It pushed you into trying new stuff and this in itself deserve some praise. read more

OMG, THIS PLACE IS THE BEST EVER!!! Board games and drinks. They have over 1000+ unique games to choose from that are sure to fit anyone's taste and style. Even as a board game collector and enthusiast, I'm blown away by their collections! You don't need to know how to play to come here. The waiters are extremely knowledgeable and they can suggest games that suit the group. They would teach you how to play the games and even play a few rounds with you if necessary. Oh, and make sure to try out their Irish Hot Chocolate! There's a $5 cover fee per person but there's no limit to how long you stay or how many games you play. Apparently if you come after 8pm on Friday or Saturday nights, there'll be a line outside. If there was a store like this where I'm from, I would come here every weekend! read more

The staff were attentive and friendly and I really enjoyed myself. I had the apple cider and it was delicious! And when I say board games, I literally mean libraries full of them with many additional copies of them too in case someone else wants to play with that same game you plan to. The selection is amazing in both English and French. There's an entry charge but let's be honest, if you didn't pay to get in you'll just come here and free load these free games won't you? So here's a place where for a paltry $6 cover charge per person you can play all sorts of board games that you never thought you would try. What I liked about the place was that the Red Shirts (that's what I'm calling the animators) could interpret your gaming desires and propose the right game for you without overwhelming you with decisions. That he knew and explained the rules clearly made for an easy introduction to the game we had chosen so the fun began right away! Randolph's has a good selection of beverages, alcoholized and otherwise as well as a kitchen that cranks out standard gamer-fare. My companion had nachos and wine followed by gummy worms. I had had a ginormous lunch so opted to stay with beverages. We played for hours, laughing and soaking up the fun-filled ambiance of the noisy room then made way for some of the other people queued up outside. Good times!! read more

One of my favorite places in Montreal! Bar / cafe / games. What's not to like?! How does it work? Food / drinks -- Upon seating, a server will take your order for drinks and food. You can order beer, cider, wine, or cocktails. They carry local beers like fin du monde, st ambroise, & dieu de ciel. I recommend their Irish hot chocolate. As per food, they mostly serve bar food like nachos, sandwiches, dips, and tacos. Games -- they have a massive selection. I've been here several times and have since played Concept, Coup, Cards Against Humanity, Settlers of Catan, Timeline, and Taboo. For $5/player, you get access to all the games they have. I've been to board games bars in other cities (shout out Board Room in Washington DC). This place is WAY better. They have a much larger variety of games and they have game masters (i.e. board game connoisseurs). Their job is to help you decide on a game. They take the time to get a feel for the type of game you want to play (trivia, strategy, long, short, fast, funny, etc) and provide you with recommendations. They even explain the rules to you and get you going. I love that here I get to try out new games in a fun environment without having to purchase a game. Note - they don't take reservations and it can get very crowded on weekend evenings. I came on a Monday evening and there was no line. read more

I love that places like this exist so that folks can test out boardgames, and the selection here is amazing, but I haaaaaaate the way this place is set up. Oh, the decor is nice, but the tables are so close together it becomes incredibly uncomfortable the second it gets even a little busy: way too noisy and cramped to actually enjoy the games or the company. You're basically sitting on top of the other patrons, and you're tripping all over one another the second one of you needs the toilet. I don't see how it's not a fire hazard, tbh, especially in the cold months when everyone shows up with a big coat and a few extra layers. And that's despite the fact that the 4-person tables are too small for most 4-player games, let alone with food and/or drinks in the mix. As for that food and drink: I can't speak to the quality of the alcohol offering, but they've got a decent selection of tea, hot or iced. As for the food... the salted caramel brownie is good, the mac and cheese is garbage; dunno about the rest. It's cool that they've got staff on hand specifically to teach patrons the games, and most of the ones I've interacted with have been lovely and helpful, but every once in a while you get one who is either way too confident about his random, unrequested game recommendations, or a little too smug about the game you've asked for. All in all? I want to like this place, and I love trying new boardgames, but I'm not likely to go back until I hear the setup is less chaotic and claustrophobic. read more

I was disappointed. Came with 3 other people to play some board games and spend a nice time together. I didn't have anything, but two of my friends got the fries and apparently it was quite good, but it was pretty expensive Pros: - A ton of games - Available water that you can pour yourself, so no need to wait for staff to come around. Cons - Very very very cramped! - Tables are very small. We mostly played fast filler games, but I can't even imagine how we would've set up something like Terraforming Mars or Scythe on that table! - The games are quite banged up: I understand that this is a board game pub and that the games will be played a lot. I wasn't expecting the games to be the same quality as my fresh out of shrink games, but some of them were in ridiculous conditions and should've been switched out for a new copy a while ago. - The service was bad: not once did an employee come to recommend a game or to help with the rules. The only time staff came to see us was to ask us to order something and they seemed annoyed when we didn't. - Price: 7$+tax per person isn't bad, but I'm used to 5$/person and waived fee if you order something to eat/drink. This might be an unfair judgement though because the other places I have been to are not in downtown Montreal. Overall impression: I came in with high expectations because I have been to board game cafés/lounges before. This was by far my worst (and most expensive) experience. I don't think I'll give this place another shot. With the amount spent, we could've pooled that money and bought a few games for our own collection. read more

After hearing so much about Randolph's I knew I had to come check it out and man, am I in love. The concept is that it's a game bar where you show up, get seated, pay $6 per person to play unlimited games, then let your gaming expert know what you're in the mood for (ex. Speed, strategy, cards etc) and finally be surprised with a game that you can learn to play. We spent a couple hours here last Friday evening and had a great time!! The food is nothing special at all but prices are ok and the atmosphere is awesome (the bowls of candy you can order were greatly appreciated btw!). The cocktails are kinda weak but I guess that's to be expected. Other than that, I love this place and can't wait to go back! Definitely check it out either with your SO, friends or even first date. Going to recommend this place to any friends that head to Montreal. Such a fun stop for a chill nightcap! Randolph's serves drinks and some foods and desserts, but what you should really come here for is their fun approach to a board game bar. Board game sommeliers/connoisseurs come by and ask you what kind of game you want (speedy, card game, strategy game, etc.) and will bring you some options based on what you want. We played some obscure games we'd never seen anywhere else when we went. There's a small patio downstairs/outside and cozy seating inside too. this place is just pure awesome. when I was in the neighborhood on Monday it happened to be their open social gaming night so I dropped in. more boardgames than I even know what to do with across multiple floors. excellent drink and food menu, though you don't necessarily have to buy anything - for a flat $6 entry fee you can game for as long as you like. but nothing goes with gaming quite like beer, so I indulged in some tasty brews. very spacious area and comfortable seating. the staff were quite friendly and will help hook you up with people with similar interest in games. want to play crunchy 3-hour Euros with a zillion little pieces to keep track of? want to play abstract strategy games? want to play memory games? they'll hook you up as best they can, time permitting (one does not simply interrupt Terraforming Mars, after all!). there's multiple copies of pretty much every game they have on hand, and in multiple languages too (obviously, French and English being predominant, but I saw a few versions of games in Spanish, Italian, and other languages). get your gaming geek on! read more

A friend suggested the place and I was a bit sceptical: what to expect? Would we have to join other groups? As it turns out, the staff is rather soft-spoken and patient. They are very open to you coming in and asking for a specific game! The waitress is a tad pushy on the drinks, there's a great selection of them, but all over $8. The nibbles look delicious, next time I'll be in, I'll make sure to try the giant cookies and home-made hummus! Yum! Don't be scared though, once you pay the $5 cover, you can play however much and however long you want. You can change the game you're playing..it's all very flexible. So much fun. Absolutely wish we had a place like this where I live. I was a little worried going to this place with just two people. However, my girlfriend and I love games, so we figured it was worth a shot. Without a doubt we saw the large groups and thought of what a fun time it would be with some of our friends. However, the "Game Masters" were able to help us select games that would suit our needs. In this case: two people, less than 1 hour, and strategy focused. We listed some of our favorite games and the "Game Masters" helped us make a selection. We were both so impressed by their advanced knowledge of the hundreds of games in the collection, all of which we had access to for $5 a person. There was also a selection of snacks and alcohol. We didn't have snacks, and the alcohol is nothing to write home about, however, for a casual setting, the snacks were just what they needed to be. This is a low cost way to have a very fun night-out as a group or just a couple. The staff is friendly, accommodating to English-speakers, and overall super aware of the game collection. read more

There is a cover charge, which gets you access to their wall of games AND your own personal game technician who helps you pick and learn games. They have food, coffee, beer, and cocktails. This is a gem of a place. Arrived a little hesitantly on a Friday night, expecting it to be all filled up after reading other reviews. Got seated immediately by a friendly server, and got suggested a fun and new (to us) board game that was very appropriate for the evening. The drinks are reasonably priced and most of the beer on tap is local. Don't mind paying the 5 dollar cover, since it seems to pay for the (extremely) well informed game masters who set up and explained the rules of the games for us. Will come back for sure. read more

This place is amazing. I'm just chiming in with all the other reviewers here to say that this is where you've gotta go for a fun evening with friends. You can actually talk to everyone there, enjoy your company and wake up the next morning at a human time because you didn't exhaust yourself! The "gamesmasters" are amazing and pick out the perfect games. The service is fantastic and so friendly! I had a slightly strange interaction waiting in line because I went in to get my name put down and the host seemed very annoyed at me! I didn't realize they weren't taking down names! The line up outside is always long so steel yourself for that. I didn't give them a 5-star review because the food isn't very good. My friend ordered the saddest looking nachos (yikes) and the hot chocolate I got wasn't memorable. I think ones best bet is to go with their selection of david's tea or their beers. Enjoy! read more

This is a great concept! If there was a board game bar near me I would be there all the time! I appreciate the vast collection of board games and the staff's willingness (and ability) to explain the rules for each game. Not only that, they will recommend a game to you if you tell them what you're looking for. They made the perfect recommendation to us. However, I'm not sure it was worth $5 EACH. They call this a cover/fee for the "Gamemasters" services of recommending games and telling you the rules. That is a lot of money, in my opinion. The beers are reasonably priced but $5 on top of that is just too much. I was tempted to dock them another star because one of the staff members made a point to insult our hometown when we told him where we were from. I don't think he realized that it was such a rude thing to do but regardless of his intentions, it left a very negative impression. Despite his rudeness, the concept is simply too awesome to give anything less than 3 stars. read more

There is a plethora of board games, an average selection of alcohol and some decent food. My date and I had good laughs and competition. However, it was a bit dampened by the customer service. We were told to move by the owner or manager, after being told by an employee it was okay to sit there. Then, we were told to move again (apparently I chose the wrong table he pointed to). His tone sounded condescending and annoyed, like we were idiots ("Guys, I said this table, not that one. That one is for 5 people, not 2). This way of talking is suitable for employees, but not customers. People next to us were looking like "wtf, that's how he talks to customers?" When the waiter came to see us, he stood in front of us silently and stoically staring at me, waiting expectantly as if I should prompt him... What kind of service is this? The game-explainers were polite. I thought this was a cool place, but after work I don't want to go somewhere that I'm going to be belittled so I won't be coming back. read more
