Outside

Total surprise. I've passed this place for years, but never tried it due to timing. Usually I'd be passing it around dinner time and the parking lot would be mostly full. Finally got to try it. Pretty basic exterior...appears to be an older convenient store that's been extended. Once inside it looks like those cafeteria type restaurants you'd see back in the 80's. Condition is nice and it's perfectly clean. Has an extended dining area...probably for dinner time, but was closed off when I was there. Luckily I was there mid day so I was able to get a better feel for the place. Very sedate vibe, slow pace. Waitress couldn't have been better. Food was excellent, prices about typical. Will be trying this place again.

Really good taco salad, very fresh and flavorful. Bigger than it looks.

Food was good but service was very slow. Also, three tables that came in after us got their meals before us.

El Poblano - This is what they call a sopapilla. But it's really not. Does taste ok, just isn't a sopapilla.

It was more like a fried flour tortilla with honey on it. (I asked for only honey they usually add Cinnamon,). A real sopapilla is fluffy because the dough puffs up when fried correctly. Personally, I'd like to bite the end off, then squeeze, honey into the hot sopapilla, then roll it around in my hand a little before eating. But alas, this wasn't that. I guess it's an OK dessert if you like something with the texture of a soft cracker with honey or cinnamon on it. But if you know what a soap is, you will be greatly disappointed and I suggest you just pass. The rest of the lunch was great, just like the first time. This time I tried a chicken chimichanga with the side of guacamole to top it. My wife had another burrito grande because she loved it so much the first time. Still, acute little place that we will frequent. Staff is still friendly and the service is good. I'll post a picture of what they call a sopapilla so if you want to look up pictures on the Internet and compare, the difference will be obvious. Anyway, still a great little place and frankly given that this little Mexican restaurant is in the middle of East Tennessee it's still really good.

To me it looks more like a tea shop than a sandwich shop. During our visit, they played fairly loud religious music for a sandwich shop. Next door was an ice cream shop but I didn't feel like any ice cream after eating and I'm not a big Blue Bell fan anyway. They have 2 menus and a lot of items to choose from but most are breakfast or lunch items. I went with a specialty sandwich, the Victoria (a chicken sandwich on ciabatta bread) and a sweet tea. I added their homemade potato salad for $1 more. The sandwich - this was a tasty sandwich on soft ciabatta bread but only 1 problem, the kitchen put American cheese on it. The menu indicated it had cheddar. Luckily they were able to bring me some cheddar from the kitchen while I was scraping off the processed cheese. Overall, it was pretty good because of a sauce they put on it which is slathered all over the shredded chicken. Potato salad - this is mayo based, quite different than the mustard based potato salad in the south. They added plenty of dill on the sandwich which made my colleague cringe since he also substituted for potato salad, but I thought it was pretty good. The service was a little strange as I heard our waitress keep making mistakes with another nearby table too as she kept saying "sorry" to that table as well.

One is for breakfast and lunch and one serves sandwiches, coffee, and ice cream. We chose the latter one. Small dining area but it was not busy so we seated ourselves. Promptly someone came and took our order after giving us some very helpful suggestions. We chose The Rose with broccoli salad and the Smoking Cricket with potato salad. All of it was delicious. But our favorite is The Rose. Their homemade pimento cheese with bacon and pepper jelly on ciabatta was amazing!

So me and my husband tried this place out for the first time…read more The place has a nice homely kind of atmosphere. Very clean, and very presentable. You can sit at a table, or you can sit at a booth. The workers were extremely polite and professional toward me and my boyfriend to say the very least. From the moment we walked in, we were instantly seated at a booth by our request. Not much longer after we were seated, the Waitress came by to take our drink orders. He got a Dr. Pepper and I got a Diet Coke. Let me start by saying this Waitress was VERY attentive to our table. About 5-10 minutes later, she came back to ask if we knew what we wanted to order. I wanted to get a medium Pizza but asked if we could get one half cheese and the other half pepperoni. She said we can definitely do that. About 10-20 minutes passed and here comes our Pizza. Nice and fresh! So much you could see the steam rising from it! The taste of this pizza was out of this world. Enough to make my mouth start salivating. The perfect combination of Crust/Dough/Sauce/Cheese. When you would remove a slice, it would leave a long and delicious trail of stringy cheese behind as you removed it from the whole pizza. Part way through our dinning experience, the Waitress came back and asked if we wanted a refill on our drinks which we said yes please. The quality/flavor of the drinks were top notch, let me just say that. There's something about having soda at a restaurant that makes it taste better than when you drink the same drink at home. When the waitress came back, she asked if we needed anything else. I told her "Check Please" She politely said, "right away sir" before going to get the check. So here's the interesting part, A medium half and half pizza, and two drinks. How much do you think that cost? Under $20! Such amazing quality Pizza for such a low price. We got all of the above for less than what you would pay to have Pizza Hut deliver you a Pizza. All in all, this was the first time me or my boyfriend had ever dined her. I intentionally held off on eating here when I knew he was moving to Kingsport Tennessee. And let me just say it was worth the wait. The food here is incredible! I'll definitely be coming back to eat here in the future! Or at least that's what my opinion of them was BEFORE Tonight on 10/17/2024... And I quote: "So this location is a place me and my husband enjoyed going to time and time again. We would always get the same thing. He would get a Dr. Pepper. I would get a Diet Coke. And we would get a Medium Cheese Pizza. This was all fine and good, til they did the one thing to cross the line. They Tip Shamed Us. As we left around 8:30 PM they said to us "you guys must not like us because you never tip." We explained we are on very minimal wages. They responded "When in doubt, don't eat out" also mentioning they run on tip to make living wages themselves. This is completely unprossional and unacceptable behavior. Tipping is always optional not a requirement. Especially when the cost of living is bleeding us all dry to begin with. We paid what we were legally obligated to pay, which was the bill for the meal. The tip, is never something that is a legal obligation to pay. On top of that, an employee of an establishment should never speak to the customer the way they did. Tip Shaming is NEVER okay and should not be allowed. No body should ever pressure you to making you feel like you have to tip. This is the very last time, me or my husband will be dining here. I'm not only infuriated that they would take this approach to try to get a tip out of us, but to approach my husband in such a way within an earshot of me. This establishment and all of it's employees should really learn how to PROPERLY treat the customers of whom are the reason they have a pay check. And that's not even getting into the dining experience we had on this night. They were running out of Dr. Pepper and my husband could tell the difference. It tasted like carbonated water and it did not have the same color that Dr Pepper usually has. I legitimately had to flag down a waitress to have this issue resolved because they were being unattentive to us in particular. Probably because they had tip shaming on the mind on this visit. The person who served us the Pizza wasn't even the original waitress. She served the pizza and then not even in a polite tone said Have a nice night, as if to say we weren't getting any more service on this visit. The original waitress came to check up on us only one time as a pose to the usual couple of times they check up on us. To summarize my thoughts, we are never coming to this establishment ever again. If you sincerely thing tip shaming is the right way to get a tip out of someone, you sincerely need to get over yourself. Now, not only do you not get a tip, you have lost 2 loyal customers and landed yourself a bad review in the process. I hope it was worth it."

But when we arrived, right after they opened on a Sunday morning, we were told that they only serve "what we refer to as 'brunch' on Sundays", and were handed paper menus with five items on it. Slightly confused, hoping we could still order off of their main menu, we waited for the waitress to return with our coffee (three Americanos and one latte). And we waited. And then we waited. And we waited some more. While we waited, three other parties came in, sat down, questioned the menu, then got up and left. Had it been just us that had that reaction to the abbreviated menu, I would have voted to woman up and just stay put. I didn't want to be "those tourists" who get all riled up about something local that doesn't fit their expectations. But once we (finally!) got our coffee and asked the waitress for clarification, we realized we had to go. The menu was the menu. Their sides - which are referenced on the menu but are never explained - were lackluster for the "base" and even less impressive for the "premium" options, which of course would have cost us even more money. That, paired with the uninspired and surprisingly one-note menu just drove us right out the door. My latte was at least delightful, but that's all I can say. Also, the place was likely very clean, because we were hit by a powerful smell of disinfectant and/or cleaner when we walked in. And finally, the waitress removed my menu after she saw me taking a picture of it. She didn't touch anybody else's menu, just mine.
