Dr. Dryer is a wonderful surgeon and the entire staff at his office are beyond amazing. I am 42 years old and have had intermittent debilitating back pain since I was in my early 20s. When I've previously seen a back doctor, I was advised to rest but keep up my yoga and Pilates routines, which for me weren't optional if I wanted to stay functioning. I picked up something off the floor around five years ago, blew out my back, and had to go to the ER. I lost all feeling in my left foot and 70% of my left leg, so my S1 nerve on my left side must have been destroyed. (Nerves regulate how muscles work; if a nerve is destroyed, you can no longer control your muscles.) PT and microneedling therapy were the only options suggested as a remedy. Walking normally again took me about three months, and over the course of the next five years, I was able to regain roughly 20% of the feeling in my left side. I didn't visit the doctor too often since I believed there was nothing that could be done. Recently, while essentially doing nothing, my back gave out once more, but this time I could tell it was much worse than before and was now affecting my lower right side. After experiencing crippling pain for several days, I decided to contact Dr. Dryer because my fiancé recommended him. I got an appointment the next day and Dr. Dryer suggested an MRI, which I found impressive considering that in the past I had only ever been given the option of an X-ray. To put it simply, it was found out that I had a severely pinched nerve and a herniated disk in my L4-L5 vertebrae. After 2 weeks, I underwent a discectomy. I had a successful surgery and was soon able to stop using painkillers. I recently had my six-week checkup, and the recovery went quite well. I'd like to share an intriguing side note in the hopes that it would be helpful to others. Before this surgery, following my initial back injury, I had numerous mild seizures, a significant decrease in libido, and an overactive bladder that made small tasks such as running errands stressful. Even more concerning, I randomly lost all functions in both arms and hands for about 2 hours. None of the above issues could be diagnosed. I had never connected the dots to realize that my back's nerve damage was most likely the root of all these problems. Oddly enough, ever since Dr. Dryer repaired me, all my issues have mysteriously vanished, including the ability to feel on both sides of my lower body. I was greeted warmly the minute I walked in. Dr. Dryer was immediately nice and we got to why I was there. His knowledge, skill and expertise made me and my husband feel at ease. Dr Dryer was dismissive and demeaning as my injury did not suffice his surgery happy approach. It's never fun to accept the loss and seek help, so make sure you read reviews before choosing a health professional. After several appointments and wasted $50 co-pays, I decided to look elsewhere and finally got an appropriate treatment plan. I have been suffering with various problems with my back for years. Several years ago he performed an ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy and fusiion) on my neck (C3-C4-C5-C6). The results were tremendous and care was outstanding. His professionalism and respect for a patient's needs is without question the best you can ask for. I recently had a spinal cord stimulator implanted due to unbearable pain in my legs. Once again the care by Dr Dryer and his staff is top notch. His followup care shows his deep concern for his patients. I have referred several friends to his practice and all have been pleased with the results of their procedures. Saw Dr. Dryer in October 2023, he saw my MRI and X-Rays and said that I was going to need a major surgery to repair my lower back. That was exactly what I knew that I needed after procrastinating for years. He said in order for the insurance to approve the surgery, I was going to need another injection and then physical therapy. He said he knew that those procedures won't help, but it was the steps needed to proceed to the surgery. While I was receiving the injection, he asked if we had discussed the spinal cord stimulator. I said no, that you said "I needed a major surgery with brackets, screws and rods" to repair the damage. When I came in for the follow up, he had the folks from Boston Scientific talk to me about the stimulator and tried to convince me that was they way to go. I agreed to try it, but my insurance company said no, that this was not the treatment plan for me and Thank God they said that! On December 7th, 2023 I called Dr. Dryer's office about the rejection and they said they had already filed an appeal. Today is June 24th 2024 and I have yet to hear back from Dr. Dryer's office. I am totally glad that I haven't. I found an amazing surgeon who found out that not only did I need lower back surgery, but I needed a surgery on C3-C6 fusion in order to stabilize my neck and my airway to prepare for the lower back surgery. I am nine weeks out from the cervical spine surgery and doing great. Now I am in a position to have the much need lower back surgery. This the first time I really felt like my insurance company was watching out for my needs. Dr.Dryer was really rude to us (egoistic) and at the same time had the gall to ask us to please not to leave any reviews. But his cards laid out everywhere in his office and room pretty much begged for a review, trying to collect some stars lol. He pretty much dismissed me due to my big size and wouldn't even try, calling me a risk. I was able to find a Dr who could work with me and this was a blessing. It is honestly incredible that there aren't more negative reviews. Though the PA was nice, Dr. Dryer was dryer than this Texas heat. He had terrible bedside manner, and genuinely scared me into surgery at 35 years old. Though I have some significant diagnoses in my cervical spine, Dr Dryer did not explore alternative options before surgery (besides PT and "I'm only prescribing this pill so insurance will approve surgery). When I asked if there were any alternatives, Dr Dryer didn't even suggest pain mgmt or anything else. He literally said "well, either you get surgery or live with this pain the rest of your life" AND WALKED AWAY. I was then guided by a med asst to a scheduling room where the scheduler explained the surgery and after care and immediately got me on the surgery schedule. I was a deer in headlights alone at this appt. Absolutely 100000% would NOT recommend this office unless you just want surgery and no alternative options. Oh, he also told me that getting an injection is "too risky being so close to the spinal cord." But.....surgery isn't?! I successfully got an injection at another practice today and already have relief!!! Edit to add after office response: Enough with the copy and pasted responses that you give people who leave 1 star. It is clear that Dr Dryer needs to work on not only his bedside manner, but the way in which he runs his business altogether. It is obvious by the lower star reviews on all platforms that he gets frustrated when patients ask questions. He does not paint a clear picture for patients before telling them their only choice is surgery. He is dismissive when patients ASK about alternatives and doesn't share WHY surgery is the "only" option in his professional opinion. The injection is only step 1 on the PLAN my new doctor is working on with me. Surgery is not always the ONLY answer, and Dr Dryer needs to start exploring these alternate options. The Texas Medical Board is a great source for information on doctors. I should have started there before allowing my health to be in the hands of Dr Dryer. You can contact them at (512) 305-7010. Dr Dryer completed a cervical and lumbar surgery. Both surgeries failed (artificial cervical disc slipped out and lumbar now has a curve and did not fuse). He told me it was normal and his nurse told me in private that it was not normal so I sought a second opinion. The new doctor told me the original surgeries WERE NOT medically necessary and unfortunately had to be repeated to correct the original procedures. After 4 surgeries within 10 months, it impacted my overall well being. In addition, he performed the surgeries within 1 week of each other as he said that is the only way the insurance would pay him for both surgeries. He thought more of himself financially than me as a patient who had to be put under twice. I do not recommend Dr Dryer. There are doctors out there that truly care about you as a person and money is not their top motivator. read more

Wow and you call your self a Dr. not even in the room 2 minutes said xrays look fine I am referring you to a pain specials. Why when the pain is in my lumbar??? Oh because you dont feel like working and hand me off to someone else. If you would have done your job and maybe invested more than 2 min you would have found out I have 2 bulging discs. But I am guessing my 170$ bill you want paid immediately?!. But I guess that price of paper that says your the Dr got in the way of listening and understanding if a pt is telling you their having pain to listen to them. Long but worth the read: You pull up "best spine surgeon in Austin", and Dr Randall Dryer pops up at the very top, with "Best Spine Surgeon in Texas," which is not accurate. He is hands-down the BEST Orthopedic Surgeon in the country! My story started in February of 2023, with debilitating sciatic nerve pain. I was seeing a Physician for this issue who kept avoiding my request for an MRI and telling me I needed to keep trying the "conventional methods" of treatment. So, I listened to him and spent too much money on chiropractic care, physical therapy, and Stretch Lab. I finally was so over it that I demanded an MRI. Turns out I had a cyst growing on my spine, causing all sorts of problems. This Physician immediately tried to sell me a spinal fusion. I have been in sales for 26 years, so I know when someone is trying to defraud me. I told him no way and left. Went to get a second opinion from Dr Dryer, he came in the office (and I never had to wait long for him), and told me clearly what the issue was, and what that other Physician did not do to help me initially and explained in terms that I understood. With his calm demeanor, and confidence I was sold. He did not even try to sell me; he just told me what needed to be done and we scheduled my surgery. I thought before I saw him that I was going to get a third opinion, but as I walked out of his office there was no thinking anything but "I found who I need to see." Not only because of his plethora of accolades, knowledge and experience, but his staff is hands-down the nicest staff at any doctor's office I have ever encountered. You know how when you go to most doctors' offices, and there are those ladies at the front that just seem so miserable in their job, and just miserable people in general. Well not at Dr Dryer's office. I was greeted with a huge smile from Kimberly at the front right when I walked in, Andie too at check-out. I did not have to dread sitting there in the waiting room waiting for a Physician who is always late, and when they finally see you, they are in such a hurry to be done that you see they do not care. I waited no time for him, and he cares! Vanessa his PA is stellar in her own right. She did not play around either and is just the sweetest person. Cathy in scheduling was on top of it. I came across as a basket case to them because this was serious, but they put me at ease. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr Dryer and his team. Excellent doctor and superior staff! Went to Dr. Dryer with severe lower back pain that extended down the legs last year. He was extremely compassionate, understanding, and had great confidence with a treatment plan. With physical therapy not helping, Dr. Dryer recommended fusion of two levels in my lower back due to no disc/bone-on-bone situation. The initial fusion recovery was a bit of a challenge, but within weeks I felt amazing, like a new person! Dr. Dryer and the staff have extreme passion for what they do in the improvement of the lives of others. I truly encourage anyone suffering with spinal/back pain to consult with Dr. Dryer. Even though our insurance was being difficult, he never gave up working with them on several phone conferences to get an approval for my treatment. I chose Dr. Dryer because of his outstanding reputation and experience. He also came highly recommended by 2 of my friends who have been under Dr. Dryer's care. His staff are gracious, knowledgeable, and expedient. Having had the surgery just over a week ago, I can say that I made the right decision. Shortly after scheduling, the pain of my impingement increased in severity. I called his office and his team found me an earlier date. Despite the fact that hospitals, due to the COVID19 outbreak, were canceling surgeries deemed elective, his team went the extra mile to protect the appointment for my procedure due to the level of my pain. Dr. Dryer successfully replaced 2 of my cervical discs. Throughout this process, Dr. Dryer and team showed compassion and diligence. Dr. Randell Dryer performed back surgery on me in 1996. He was highly rude, dismissive and I'm still suffering from the L4 L5-S1. He also cut my Spondylitis. On 6:00am he stopped by and told me I was being a baby and I needed to grow up. During the surgery less than 15 hours before, he made a huge mistake and he wouldn't take responsibility for it. I have had four spinal surgeries with Dr Dryer. My last cervical fusion did not go well. I ended up with a C7 pinched nerve, which caused a cold burning pain running down my left arm. I told Dr. dryer this issue at my post op, but said it should dissipate. Luckily, I had found a different doctor. This time a neurologist. He corrected all my issues, which started at C4 and went down to T1. Ranging from bone spurs, pinched nerve, two ruptured disc, and a loose hardware that became loose after surgery. This loose hardware caused the bone to fuse wrong. If you ever need a fabulous neurologist, Dr D. Sahni is the man for you. He's not like Dr. Dryer where he rushes you in/out for you appointment. BEWARE OF BILLING SCAMS. I along with several former patients of Dr. Dryer are receiving bills from S&S Labs for what was presented as an drug screen required before receiving prescriptions for back pain medication. This simple drug screen is $10,000! My appointment was in 2016 and I was told by the office manager Jessica Agnew, that this was an error and some sort of contractual agreement Dr Dryer had with the lab to collect samples but the patient would not be charged then I was told it would be written off. 2 1/2 years later I receive a bill for $10,000 and now I'm getting the runaround. Now no one claims to know how to fix this mess and trying to leave me stuck with a $10K bill for a simple drug screen. I went to see Dr. Dryer as he came highly recommend (on his own wedsite) however was completely disappointed purely by his horrible bedside manner. This man does NOT want to hear anything from the people paying him. The arrogance filled the room as soon as he walked in kinda like a "God complex". He did not look at my MRI which was pulled up on the monitor it was obvious that with him being aware I had recently had a heart attack he was not interested in even talking to me and said "no surgeon will touch you for at least 6 months. I already knew this I just wanted to know the plan and possibly get things scheduled. He then went on a rant about how the pain management doctor's should never have prescribed the medication I am on!!! A doctor criticizing another doctor to a patient!! Again "God Complex"... My wife asked the PA if he is always like this and she just smiled and shook her head... It ended with me telling him that I will get my back fused if not by him someone else.. That is when he simply got up and left... He is certainly not someone I would care to sit down and speak to then have to trust on something as critical as him cutting on my back!!! As is the case with a lot of businesses, this doc seems to get a lot of one-star as well as 5-star reviews. The middle ones don't care passionately enough to write a review. I went to Dr Dryer for pain and tingling down both arms to my fingertips.I have severe arthritis in my shoulders and neck. The shoulder doc said I needed a neck doc, so I picked Dryer. Dryer came into the examining room, looked at my neck X-rays on the light box, and said immediately, "Your cervical vertebrae are fused, and there's nothing that can be done." (I assume that meant there was nothing he could do.) I don't object to his instant diagnosis and prognosis; if anything, that would tend to indicate that he knows his stuff. I emphasized that I was NOT there for pain medication, but my pain was keeping me from falling asleep. I was taking 2,000 to 3,000 mg of Tylenol every day and didn't want to go higher if possible. To sleep, I was taking Ativan an hour before bedtime and Ambien at bedtime, in addition to alcohol in the evening. I'd been cutting down and was now down to 1 mg Ativan and 7.5 mg Ambien but still drinking. He said dismissively, "They're all the same thing." I said, "Well, I know they all have similar properties, but they are different substances." He said, "No, they're identical." I said, "I have a PhD in psychology and have studied psychopharmacology." He said, "So have I." WTH? They obviously have very similar effects, but they do in fact have different molecular structures. Way more importantly, why was he picking a totally unnecessary fight with me on my first visit? Maybe he was unhappy that he saw a condition that he couldn't treat. No one likes that. I hate to say it but all the bad reviews for Dr Dryer are true! I was skeptical about the bad reviews before my first appointment thinking to myself, there's got to be a good reason for those bad reviews, miscommunication, a bad day by the reviewer, etc.... I am here to say I am only giving 1 star because 0 is not an option! Dr Dryer is egoistical, rude, flippant, pompous, and has a horrible bedside manner! I had a total of 3 appointments with Dr Dryer and they got progressively worse! First one he spent all of 5 minutes, telling me I need surgery immediately. Second appointment he spent even less time in the room and I had to call him back in the room to ask him questions! The third time was about 5 minutes in the room and he proceeded to talk trash about my insurance provider. Again I had to stop him from leaving to ask questions and he acted upset that I was asking questions as if I was wasting his time. Is this guy even real? I was looking for hidden cameras, maybe it was a set up and someone was going to jump out and say surprise he's really a mechanic! His sidekick assistant (female dark hair) is not any better btw... luckily I got a second opinion and this guy will be nowhere near my spine ever! Dr. Dryer is the sole reason that I will not be in pain for the rest of my life, and I could not recommend him more. I came in with back pain that was also in my hip and upper leg. Originally, as I had two slipped discs in my spine, he treated me with physical therapy and oral steroids, and did not think I would need surgery. But through those treatments as my back pain improved, my hip pain grew worse. I saw three doctors prior to Dr. Dryer and I doubt any of them would have caught the the root of all my troubles was actually my SI joint, but he did. Surgery, then, WAS needed, a joint fusion calling for 3 screws in my hip. My insurance fought me on it hard, and Dr. Dryer and his office, as much as it was in their power to do, fought hard er for me to have this surgery. Without it this would have never got better. As someone who had exercised daily, about 10 hours a week and otherwise lead an active lifestyle, that idea was devastating. I am now one week out from surgery. So far it looks like Dr. Dryer nailed it. He is a surgeon with an ego, it is true, but I like that in a surgeon. He has earned some ego. I found him because a woman in my dance class had him do surgery on her back and neck, and in her mid-40s, she moves as easily and is as flexible as a ballerina. I have seen the reviews about him being cold. That was honestly not my experience. He was friendly and he seemed to truly give a damn about me the whole way through. Ego yes, jerk no. I am in the middle of getting second opinions on surgery. He didnt have time to answer questions, he criticized my other doctors, made me feel like an addict because of the medications that I'm taking but was unable to listen to any additional information. I had to sit there while he dictated our visit on his recorder (why does my time need to be taken up by this task?) and he said that the other doctors diagnosis was "dangerous". Then he told me about the surgery he would do as he got out the door as quickly as he could. Then he told me to sit in the waiting room so I could talk to "scheduling". I told him I was still getting opinions and wasn't ready to schedule but he insisted I wait. So I waited for another 10 minutes and then was whisked into a small cramped office to be "sold" a surgery. I felt like I was buying a used car. The whole thing just made me want to cry. Don't go to this guy if you are looking for someone who treats you like a patient. This guy just wants to sell surgeries. I wish I had seen the other reviews before I went. I have been in pain since Dr. Dryer did the spinal surgery about a year ago. In the last week, I've gone to two spinal specialists, only to find out that Dr. Dryer did the sloppiest job they have seen. So, in addition to being called old and fat without any provocation, I get to have 2 more surgeries because of the damage he has caused. All of it can be seen and obvious in x-rays and MRIs. If I were an attorney, I would be very rich. I may file a complaint with the medical board when I recover. read more

We should have trusted our gut after the 1st surgery. But ended up with 3 for an 18 year old final being a fusion. Didnt care she was a college athlete. We asked a ton if questions always but he was always rude. Alot of pressure from him. 8 months after fusion my daughter is still in a ton of pain. His bedside manner is absolutely horrible. We are now with a new doctor. My daughter will be using a bone stimulator for awhile. Her college athletics is out of the question. Her dreams of fire academy are.on hold. This guy's a total hack. BEWARE! I was having back pain and saw him as my first point of contact. He suggested an MRI and when complete I was diagnosed with a single degenerative disc. Upon being in the room with him for 3 minutes during the review of the MRI he said the S-word... SURGERY. Wooooahh... wait a minute. I've never had any back problems in my life. I've been healthy and active my whole life. What about alternatives to surgery? I've done research and steroids / anti-inflammatory medication / diet / physical therapy / etc. seem to be great options. I don't want to go straight to surgery. He looked at me like I was an idiot and preceded to attempted for the next 5 minutes to talk me into going under the knife. When I finally talked him into allowing me to do physical therapy and writing a script for it, he laughed at me and said, "I can write you a prescription, but it'll never work. You'll be back here in 2 weeks after your done and we'll be scheduling surgery." Literally, with a smug smile and giggles during the sentence. I was so angry I promptly left and scheduled a second opinion with a doctor recommended from a buddy of mine. Upon getting a second opinion, my new (and current) Dr. said that absolutely he'd like to try every single thing he can think of prior to doing surgery. Surgery should be the last and final step to any injury / ailment - and I AGREE! Two weeks of low-dose oral steroids and a week of physical therapy and I was cured. This was about a year ago. I have been keeping up with the at-home physical therapy and am doing well - NO PAIN! So, in closing, be VERY VERY VERY VERY careful with this doctor. He is first and foremost a surgeon and has no concept of therapy other than surgery. Perhaps he's a good surgeon... but he is tunnel-minded and clearly only wants to cut you, especially when you flash that shiny Blue Cross card. read more

Dr. Dryer is the most disinterested doctor I have seen in the last 2 years that I have been dealing with leg pain. I have had 5 back surgeries 4 by the same doctor and was there to get second opinion since I'm still in quite a bit of pain. All he did was cut down the work that I had and told me the doctor should of worked on a different part of my back but his solution was to have a spinal cord stimulator installed in my back which I had already tried that but he can't be wrong so he said he would do a lot better job and I could talk to the rep which just so happened to be standing right outside the door. I felt like I was buying a used car. And like the other people that have posted he hardly looked at the mri and he answered his cell phone at least 2 times right on the middle of questions. Dr. Dryer changed my life. He is a surgeon; therefore, he is the doctor to see if you're willing to consider surgery. I had tried EVERYTHING over a 6-year period and my back pain was getting worse and worse. I had seen an orthopedic doctor, 5 chiropractors, 4 pain specialists. I tried steroid shots, prolotherapy, radio frequency nerve ablation, physical therapy, chiropractic, spinal decompression, working out with a personal trainer, massage therapy, accupuncture and probably some other stuff I've forgotten about. I believe that he is uber-skilled and professional. I love that he got straight to the point of what was CAUSING my back pain--a question I had asked each and every one of the health care professionals I had seen. I don't know, maybe the others weren't so interested in getting to the root of the problem because if the problem were fixed, I wouldn't need them anymore. He explained why I was having pain, what he would do to fix it, and what the recovery would be like. I have never had any surgery, so I was a little scared, but really anxious to recover my quality of life. I spoke with my GP and he told me that Dr. Dryer was one of the best orthopedic surgeons in Texas--and that if I had to have surgery, Dr. Dryer was an excellent choice. I had L5-S1 fusion with rods, screws, the whole nine yards, plus a titanium cage. The surgery itself went well, his staff were amazing, and the hospital experience was awesome (this should probably be a separate review). I was home the next day and back at work as a personal chef within the month. I was cleared to work out 3 months after surgery. Currently, I'm 5 months post-surgery and 90 percent of the time I don't even think about my back. read more

If you have multiple herniations, I would suggest getting a second opinion. He spent 5 minutes with me in the room just doing a quick evaluation, and then recommended an epidural injection. I barely had enough time to ask one question before he left to attend another patient. Everything felt so rushed. That's just my experience. Also READ the statement before doing the urine sample! They sent the sample to a lab that's out of my network. I can't believe they did this. The doctor was listed as in-network but they actually sent the sample to an out of network facility. Be careful! Dr. Dryer did both of my surgeries. He is superior. I was referred by my brother who said he was the best. He doesn't always tell you surgery is the answer, he wants what is best for you. He will order tests and then determine what to do. My husband is going to see him now and I know Dr. Dryer will help. Whatever you think of his personality, arrogant or (as I believe) confident, he is a very sweet man who works very hard. When I had my second surgery, he went out of his way to schedule the surgery before my insurance was going to charge me a new deductible, so I didn't have to pay for the surgery at all. Dr. Dryer is a complete professional and a great surgeon to work with. From January 1, 2019 - January 24, 2019 I was in and out of 3 different hospitals with severe sciatic pain until my first office visit with Dr. Dryer Wednesday, January 23, 2019. Dr. Dryer looked at my MRI's with two ruptured discs (3/4 and 4/5) and knew immediately what to do. Instead of going for some serious fusion work Dr. dryer recommended we go with the minimally invasive discectomy on one disc and laminectomy on the other. I absolutely liked everything about Dr. Dryer's demeanor and his confidence about what needed to be done. He was completely booked for his Thursday, January 24, 2019 surgeries. This was a huge disappointment and he could see it in my face. He gave me one extra look into my eyes and said, "I'll get you in tomorrow". When I saw him, at the hospital, on the morning of the surgery I asked him how he was able to get me in. His answer was simple, "I came into the hospital at 6:00 this morning". It is exactly two weeks since my surgery at Westlake Hospital and I am already at what I would call 85% full recovery. Needless to say I love this guy. Dr. Dryer's huge office staff of nurses and assistants are all extremely courteous and professional. I have been to his office three times now and have never had to wait more than 15 minutes to see him. I can tell you that the staff of professionals at Westlake Hospital think he is fantastic too. Never got to talk to him...he had to rush off to an emergency so just spoke with the PA....disappointing to me but whatever. I've yet to find a decent doc in this town. Nice enough but prescribing pain meds and PT....I've been doing this for years. Really don't want to go down this road again. No disc left so not many options left....20years of pain ...just no good answers. Moving on.... read more

Beware of Dr. Dryer and get another opinion. Dr. Dryer told me that surgery was critical and scared me into an emergency surgery that I DID NOT NEED. He messed up the surgery but kept telling me that it takes two years to fully heal and I believed him. My back surgery was a failure and he just wanted to convince me that I was healing so he could get past the time in which a lawsuit could be filed. Later I found out that he told my insurance that I had went to physical therapy, had injections and several other pre surgery treatments which was all a complete lie to get the insurance to pay for the $250,000 surgery. He was the first and only doctor I saw before having surgery. He said I'd be paralyzed etc if I didn't act fast. After the surgery, my spine was curved (scoliosis) due to the screws put into my back crooked. I got a staff infection in the wound AND had to have the wound opened and spend months in wound care letting the infected wound heal from the inside out. There was a surgical staple imbedded in the infected wound that was removed in wound care. Dr. Dryer is a greedy man that only cares about money and he will do unnecessary surgery on you to get it ... BEWARE AND AVOID DR. DRYER. read more

I had first met Dr Dryer in 2004 shortly after the birth of my 2nd daughter, I was having a lot of back pain and was diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis. Surgery to fuse my L4-5 took place 3 months later. I was new to surgeries and aside from his terrible bedside and office manner things went well. He was mighty proud of himself when he left me with a good looking minimal scar. Fast forward 5 yrs, I broke my fusion at work in the ER....lifting a tiny old lady with another nurse... I felt a pop, not pain, just a crack of you back pop...Who thinks they will bust a metal fusion 5 yrs post....this girl didn't . I went to Dryer for help and he REFUSED to see me since it was not a "surgical" issue and sent me to a pain specialist. Pain gets worse, legs go numb, meds not helping....Finally after begging him he orders and MRI. I go to his office to get results and he continues to berate me telling me he doesn't see patients for pain.. There was a note on my MRI from the radiologist stating my fusion busted and he laughed and said he did not believe the read....he put the films up on the light box and got serious fast when he realized that yes in fact I had busted my fusion and had to have a redo! So now almost out of FMLA it was a rush to get something scheduled and done so I would not lose my job. I did not know who else to go to so I stayed with Dryer for the redo. Surgery went as well as surgeries go, recovery sucked since I spiked fever and had to stay over night with nothing for muscle spasms but 5mg Valium every 6 hours!! Not what I would recommend for a posterior approach. The PACU staff was also scummy, after extubating I said I was having trouble breathing and a nurse said "put her down" instead of just telling me it was OK and I was breathing fine. I will never again call upon that man to come near me with blade. I just hope this fusion doesn't bust again. read more

I had two herniated discs in my lumbar spine. Dr. Dryer worked with me for two years trying conservative treatments, physical therapy, strengthening, stretching, epidural injections, and more but ultimately all were unsuccessful as my discs were completely desiccated. Dr. Dryer did a lumbar fusion as that was the best surgery for my pain and problem. Surgery was successful and now I am recovering, looking forward to being able to live normal life again. read more

I was completely nervous about having major surgery. I was having back pain and was diagnosed with arthritis in my back a few years ago. The pain worsened so I made an appointment (after much searching) with Dr. Dryer. He scheduled me for an MRI and after reviewing it, changed my diagnosis to degenerative disc disorder. Unlike what others say, he actually tried to keep me from having surgery. He recommended PT and a cortisone shot as a treatment. Neither of these things relieved my pain; I even tried yoga. After a few appointments with Dr. Dryer, i brought up surgery as an option. He said that given my age (a spritely 42) that surgery would be an option. I am in pretty good shape, I run and eat well and don't carry much extra weight. So we both expected the recovery to go well. I was still super nervous to have such a major surgery. The list of risks they read will turn your hair white! But I knew it was the right thing to do. I had a lumbar fusion of my bottom 3 discs in June. The surgery was performed going through the abdomen and the scar is about 4 inches long. One of the only things I will say is that I didn't read anywhere that bursitis was a possible side effect. I ended up getting it in both my hips. That pain was worse than any of the pain I had in my back. but after a steroid pack for 6 days, the pain went away. All in all I spent about 8 weeks in a lot of pain. Being allergic to oxycodone and hydrocodone I didn't get much relief. I was prescribed tramadol to help, but it only took away the pain and left me unable to sleep. my saving grace was acetametaphine. And in hindsight, I realize most of my pain was in my legs and buttocks because of the bursitis. once that cleared up things got much better. It's now 12 weeks post op and I'm walking normal and sleeping much better. As far as claims that Dr. Dryer doesn't spend much time with his patients, that is true. And that was a genuine concern for me. He's all business but any time I've had a question or a concern, he has answered my questions and put me at ease. I even sent him an email with about 15 questions I had and he printed it out and went over each question to make sure he answered them. He's a great doctor and I'm now to the point that I feel the surgery was worth it. Don't have a surgery like this if you're expecting to get up and be back to normal after a week or so. I know everyone has different expectations from what they want from a doctor. I can only speak for myself. I had pain. The pain in my neck was awful. I knew I had issues with my discs. Two had collapsed and it was basically bone-on-bone. It compressed my nerves. At times it would "twang" my spinal cord, like someone who would pick a guitar string. All of this was due to degenerative disc disease. I tried physical therapy and epidurals (through another doctor) because they didn't want me having a surgery where a fusion would need to be done. That was four years ago. Fast forward to October of 2017... I had enough. I couldn't workout, or sit at a desk too long because the pain was too much. I decided to see a new doctor (Dr. Dryer). He sent me for an MRI immediately. I was scared of a neck surgery, like most. I'm only 45 years old, and wasn't sure what all would be affected after. Could I run? Could I sit and work at my desk without pain? Will I be able to return to my normal, active self before all this start, unrestricted? Could I sleep through the night without waking up from pain? The people at the MRI place gave me a clue as to my recovery. They said, "We only see Dr. Dryer's patients once and we never see them again. He's very good at what he does." Still, I wondered if I would be the exception. Within a month I was in surgery. As it turns out I didn't need a fusion (like my last doctor wanted me to have), just a simple disc replacement. Above all, it would only be a six week recovery, and back to doing all the things I want to do, including full range of motion...and it happened just like that. Not only did I recover fully, but I did not realize how restricted the movement in my back was until after the surgery. I could not twist too far without getting spasms. I did not know that my neck had been affecting the nerve which runs all the way down to my lower back. I thought I was just aging. I have full range of motion now. I highly recommend Dr. Dryer because he tells you what is going to happen, and it happens. I thought the service was excellent. Kathy would always take time to say hello. Again, I don't know what expectations others have, but I want to be healed. I want a doctor who knows what he's doing. I want the staff to take care of me as painlessly as possible. I just had Kathy at doctor dryers office hang up on me because I asked to cancel my appointment because she couldn't explain why my epidural injection was scheduled as an office visit. I had called early to ask the staff to verify that my insurance covers an injection and they called me back and quoted my deductible only. Poorly run front office. read more
