If you read reviews for medical providers, you'll see a common theme: doctors were great, office staff was horrible. That was certainly the case here. I have nothing but good things to say about Drs. Gallagher, Amis, and Barron. But the office manager left such a bad taste in my mouth I'll likely seek care elsewhere if I need another visit. One benefit of insurance is not just that insurance often pays part of the bill, but it actually lowers the total cost of the bill, because of the "contracted rates" agreement between the insurer and doctor. Our insurance is weak and doesn't cover office visits, meaning we don't technically qualify for contracted rates, but all our other providers give us the contracted rates anyway (probably reasoning that if the doctor were willing to receive $x as payment from an insurer, they'd be willing to receive the same amount from us). However, the office manager at ATX Ortho has seemingly decided on her own that ATX Ortho won't give the contracted rates, and doesn't care that that makes ATX Ortho stand alone in that regard. The initial conversation about my wife's bill went something like this: - - - - - OFFICE MGR: Your insurance doesn't cover office visits, so you don't get the contracted rate. ME: I know our insurance doesn't cover office visits, but all our other providers give the contracted rates for office visits, even though office visits aren't covered there, either. OFFICE MGR: But your insurance doesn't cover office visits! (groan) I went round and round on this, all I could get out of her was "Your insurance doesn't cover office visits!" - - - - - Today I saw Dr. Amis for myself and explained the problem with my wife's bill, including how all our other providers give the contracted rates even though they don't have to, and showed him the EOB with the Total Charged vs. Repriced amounts ($393.50 vs. $292.05). He didn't really want to know all the details (which is normal, he wants to leave administration to office staff so he can practice medicine), but said he'd be happy to receive the $292.05 repriced amount and directed the receptionist to honor that rate. So I paid, and asked her to submit my own office visit through insurance the same way. Then after I got home, the office mgr. called and again railed at me that our insurance doesn't cover office visits and she wouldn't give us the contracted rates. I protested that Dr. Amis had said we could get those rates, and she said that was just for my wife. I said I was sure that Dr. Amis meant it to apply to my bill also. She countered that my wife was "lucky" to have gotten the contracted rate at ATX Ortho (at other offices, we don't need "luck" to get the contracted rate, they just give it to us), and that she talked to Dr. Amis and he said to not give the contracted rate. I think she either didn't actually talk to him, or she did and misled him, more on that later. I asked her: "To be clear, if ATX Ortho doesn't give the contracted rate, it will be alone among all our various doctors' offices for not giving that rate, is this really the way you want to handle it?" She said yes. Since the decision to not honor the contracted rates is so unusual, I asked her where that policy was coming from, from her, or from the practice owners? Because it really seemed like it was coming from her. She said she talked to both Drs. Amis and Gallagher and it was their decision. I asked, when you presented the information to them, did you explain that ALL OUR OTHER PROVIDERS GIVE US THE CONTRACTED RATES? She admitted that she did not. Bingo. So, the doctors, who are not versed in the intricacies of insurance/billing, understandably deferred to their administrative staff, but their staff misled them by not giving them the whole story. I do want to point out that the *other* office staff has always been nice and helpful (e.g., Amber). read more

I first saw Dr Amis after a failed attempt to recapture my youth in 2020 by rollerblading. I had a complex wrist break and he helped me avoid surgery. Since then he also helped me with a trigger thumb and as of yesterday, my other thumb. He is knowledgeable, takes time to explain things, and is effective. The staff is also wonderful as they have everything in order and I don't have to wait long on the phone nor the office. Dr Gallagher is an exceptional Orthopedic Surgeon. He did total knee replacements on both of my knees within a period of six months. He is professional but equally important he is very caring and concerned about his patients as people. I have and will continue to highly recommend him to anyone who needs Orthopedic Surgery. My knees were so severe that I had trouble walking. After the first surgery, I was gratefully able to walk again! So when the second knee needed surgery, I didn't hesitate to contact Dr Gallagher. ATX Orthopedics - My new straight right leg and knee!!! - Sports Medicine Near Me - Austin, Texas

I had a total hip replacement in July 2022. I'm 53, w/ongoing hip issues for 3-4 years. I staved off surgery via PT & strength training. I finally got an MRI, which showed that I had no cartilage, prominent cysts, bone spurs, & labral tears. I saw a doc at a different practice but was overwhelmed & felt rushed to get surgery. I went to Dr. Sean Gallagher at ATX Orthopedics for a 2nd opinion, and everyone was so great - the front desk, the insurance wrangler, the nurses - everyone! I appreciated Dr. G's philosophy: the *patient* should make the decision to have THR when their quality of life is impaired. So after asking a ton of questions, I trusted his assessment, and felt good about the hardware he installs & the approach he uses: SuperPATH. Dr. G works out of Seton Hospital & Pinnacle Surgery Center. I chose the latter; the experience was positive from start to finish. I was anxious when I arrived, but everyone was kind & patient, which put me at ease. The anesthesiologist stopped by to explain the procedure for deep sedation. Dr. G came in to mark my hip w/a surgical marker, then sat down and asked me if I had any questions. He spent time & didn't make me feel rushed. It was so helpful & grounding. So I was ready to go! The nurse who wheeled me into the OR said she'd be with me the whole time. Once in the OR, I saw that one entire wall is a big window. An OR that includes natural light - pretty cool! There was a table full of various sizes of hip replacement hardware. All that shiny titanium spread out like that made me think of a Price Is Right display. I don't remember the spinal ("do a cannonball") b/c the anesthesiologist had started IV sedation. Afterward, I don't remember talking to Dr. G. Apparently, I woke up giggling for about 5 minutes. Clearly *something* was hilarious! When I fully awoke, I started moving my legs right away. The recovery nurse, Sean, was so nice! I cleared the post-op hurdles, including a walk to the bathroom, & soon enough I was sprung. They called in my meds, and I went home in a pair of TED hose (worn for 2 weeks) & with a walker w/ 2 wheels in the front. The 1st week post-op was about balancing rest vs. movement, learning which pain meds work best, & icing to reduce swelling. I recommend the Chattanooga ColPac 11"x14" gel sheet. It stays flexible when frozen & works well to position directly where you want. My surgical site was covered by a large, soft bandage. After 10 days it started peeling off on its own, so removal was easy. A few days later the steri-strips peeled off. Now at 2&1/2 weeks post-op, the scar is very thin; it'll soon be almost invisible. I am impressed. I had 3 telehealth PT calls w/ Jane Rha (Ascension) who was fantastic! One call was pre-op - so helpful to prepare for surgery. Two post-op calls had me up & moving - this absolutely boosted my mood & shortened my recovery time. After 1 week, I started in-person PT w/ Rachel Wright (Ascension). I'll see her for *many* more weeks. She's fantastic - highly recommended! I used a walker for about a week, then a cane for about a week. Now, at 2&1/2 weeks post-op, I use a cane periodically. Two weeks post-op, I saw Dr. G. I had a dozen questions - he answered every single one. It meant so much to talk to the only person who could answer, "So what did it look like in there?" I asked him about continued recovery, expectations for returning to full strength & mobility, and more. Dr G's focus is on the patient: educating you, reassuring you, letting the *you* make the decision about surgery. To me, this is the ideal way to guide patients through what can be a scary, intimidating process. I see Dr. Gallagher again in a month for my final post-op visit. After that, I told him I hope I don't need to see him again, BUT *if* I do have to get my left hip done, I absolutely will return. For now, I can't wait to be fully healed, to finally be able to move through daily life without pain, and to see where my amazing, restored hip mobility leads me! read more

I am very happy to share my experience with using ATX Orthopedics for total knee replacement and Dr. Gallagher. It was such a pleasant surprise to go to an office that was not over crowded and the front staff were friendly and helpful. (I used a different orthopedic group for foot surgery and experienced large, overcrowded waiting rooms, long lines for checking in and out, and late appointments.) ATX Orthopedics treats you like you are special patient and not just a number! When I met Dr. Gallagher, I could tell he was very knowledgeable in the field of orthopedics and after he looked at my knee x-rays recommended knee replacement surgery. I told him I could not live with the pain anymore and was ready to take the next step. He told me he uses a method of pain management that helps speed in the recovery of his patients. I was referred to a pain management specialist who deadened some of the nerves around my knee a week prior to surgery. This procedure was relatively painless and enabled me to have knee surgery, at Pinnacle day surgery, and go home the same day! I couldn't believe I was walking with a walker the same day as my surgery and sleeping in my own bed. If you follow his instructions and do the exercises, go to physical therapy, and take the prescribed medications you will be on the road to recovery before you know it! I was blood tested with Nickel & Aluminum metal allergies and was scheduled for a total knee replacement and had to cancel with my previous surgeon due to the implants he used contains these metals. I then went to Dr Gallagher and he found a suitable Nickel & Aluminum free implant from Smith & Nephew that would work for my knee replacement. I thank Dr Gallagher for researching and finding a good implant for me. Also I opted out of using the Dr Peck - Pre-Op IOVERA Cyroablation and Radiofrequency Ablation Nerve Blocks due to reading online about people having bad experiences with these nerve blocks that can last many months with side affects. I went with the Exparel 2 single shot injections given at time of surgery - they are long lasting nerve blocks with 1 shot above knee and 1 shot below knee - this worked very well for me blocking the pain for 4 days post op. I was prescribed 2 different narcotic pain meds but never had to use them due to the Exparel nerve blocks. read more

Dr. Gallagher's successful revision of my first failed left knee replacement dramatically increased my range of motion to benefit stability, flexibility and safety. I met two surgeons regarding my revision. Dr. Gallagher's proactive pre-surgical investigation of first surgery robot records, X-ray and metal testing was superior preparation to the other surgeon whose revision plan was to "open up and see" how to correct the original surgery. Dr. Gallagher listened carefully to my original knee replacement experience. The robot records he ordered from my first, 9/9/2020 surgery (by a now retired surgeon) showed bone alignment to be off by 5°. He proscribed metal allergy testing, showing sensitivity to the composition of the original prosthetic, which caused formation of excessive scar tissue. His 9/22/2022 revision surgery removed the scar tissue, replaced the original prosthetic with his preferred biocompatible prosthetic, properly realigned my bones and added structural joint changes that maximized my range of motion. In addition, Dr. Gallagher proscribed Iovera°, a pre-surgical anesthesia administered by Dr. Davin Peck. Iovera° is a cryo treatment that temporarily numbs the knee nerves from feeling pain for approximately three months. This meant I did not need or take any pain killer after the third day of surgery; pain was managed solely after three days by extra strength Tylenol. While a revision is a more extensive surgery than an original first knee replacement, my overall comfort during and between PT sessions, and speed of recovery was much faster than my first surgery using standard painkillers without the Iovera°. With the Iovera° alone I was also able to drive myself to PT two weeks after surgery. Dr. Gallagher's staff, Vicki, Jessica, Amber and Marie were a pleasure to communicate with through pre-surgical planning and post surgical follow ups. Their careful listening and empathetic approach made me feel comfortable to call with any questions while making the entire process run smoothly. Dr. Gallagher's alignment and prosthetic corrections with mechanical enhancements maximized my range of motion needed for flexibility, stability and safety. After the first knee replacement my ROM was 108°. After Dr. Gallagher's revision my ROM is now 137°. Dr. Gallagher and his staff provided meticulous care, giving me a successful outcome well beyond my expectations, and hopes! read more

I've been using the services of ATX Ortho for a little over a year now. Dr. Gallagher replaced my right knee last February and I was up and about within a week. Started back playing tennis about 10 weeks after surgery. Mostly doubles reduce strain on the knee. It was a huge relief to have the knee pain eradicated and I've been totally satisfied with the outcome. Still playing tennis at 75 and no issues with the knee. My great experience with Dr. Gallagher lead me to using his collegue, Dr. Amis for my carpal tunnel left wrist surgery. Again, nothing but great things to say about the outcome. Numbness is gone and so is the tingling/burning sensation that had been waking me at night. Technique used was arthroscopic with a very small incision in the wrist that allowed me full use of the hand within days. Also have to note, as have others, that the scheduling has been easy and the staff very friendly and professional. Overall a well deserved 5 star review. This will be my forever orthopedic office. On my September 2020 rating I was furious about how Seton Ascension treated me in the hospital AFTER my surgery & was willing to blame that on my surgeon & his office. So let me now say, 9.5 months after surgery to repair a completely & very badly torn rotator cuff: Got shoulder issues? Go to Benjamin Amis. I have just seen him about my other shoulder, so I'm following my own recommendation. His partner, Sean Gallagher, is who I see about my hip (for a DX missed for years by another Austin ortho). The nurses/medical assistants/office staff are all fabulous, too. They were all as challenged by what Seton Ascension did to me as I was & have done all they could to fix the issues. Oh, and these docs watch out for their patients in other ways. If you have drug allergies, they pay attention. I have enough allergies & doctors to know that not all doctors do this. The ATX Ortho team is fabulous. Their attention to detail, polite, friendly and professional manner put me at ease while researching and considering surgery. The surgical center that Dr. Gallagher uses was outstanding as well. Dr. Gallagher has performed 2 arthroscopic shoulder surgeries on both my shoulders in the last year. I am about 80 percent healed on the first one and just starting the long healing time and soon rehab on the other one. I have had minimal pain after both full rotator cuff surgeries and have been so wonderfully surprised at how great I am feeling. Last fall I fell and had a nasty fracture of my right radius. After some disappointing treatments with another practice I was referred to Dr Amis. Got an appointment right away and although the need for surgery was 50/50 we decided to cast instead. I have been a private scrub for a hand surgeon in another state so had a good understanding of the options. Turns out I was freaked out during the long course of recovery in addition to being embarrassed that I accidentally got the cast wet and had to have it replaced. ‍ No matter what my anxieties or concerns every single person who helped me there was patient and understanding. I've had many broken bones including my back and always breezed through, not this time. The physical therapist he recommended was also stellar. I am finally turning the corner of function of my hand, wrist and thumb and I would give them 10 stars if I could. I was pretty adamant about having surgery on a torn meniscus based on a first opinion giving my another doctor. Dr. Gallagher assured me he loved doing surgery, but advised otherwise indicating a possible IT Band issue with some deconditioning of a Gluteus Medius or Minimus after a visit and an evaluation. Dr. Gallagher showed me an article he had written on these types of patient pain. The diagrams showed exactly the areas I was having pain, which ran right into my knee area. It's nice to know a surgeon considers your best interest before operating. I am still doing the exercises and surgery may be an option after a time, but for now I am happy we went a different route. read more

ATX Orthopedics is amazing. I mean it. This practice is staffed with the most caring, personable folk I've ever experienced. Because of my active lifestyle (& maybe some big-rock hopping), I managed to dislocate the femur prosthesis of my previous knee replacement a couple years ago. Well I put off seeing Dr. Gallagher as long as I could because of not wanting to confess my over-aggressiveness). But when I finally did go in, no one even mentioned or teased me about it -- and they surely had every right to do so. Dr Gallagher, when he looked at it and the x-ray, kinda shook his head and said, "Well, Les, guess you know what we need to do. So that's what we did. During the Pre-Exam, Pre-OP, the surgery and recovery room for a night, EVERYONE from the receptionist to the Surgical tech to the Nurses to the Custodian, treated me like a KING!! I broke my forearm and my experience with Dr. Amis and the team at ATX Orthopedics has been fantastic. It started one night when I was changing the tire on my minivan and the jack fell and my two ton minivan came crashing down on my forearm. My radius was cracked and I called a radiologist friend for a recommendation figuring he'd know who did the best job fixing bones. He recommended Ben Amis. Dr. Amis saw me the next day, and the day after that I was in surgery having plates & pins put in. My recovery has been a textbook case: I was off pain meds within 24 hours of coming out of surgery and on ibuprofen only for a few days. My bone has healed on target and within a month I should be back to my normal activities. As someone who stays active it was important to be able to get back to crossfit, weightlifting, and biking, and I'm happy I with every aspect of my experience with ATX Orthopedics. It's worth noting that for every appointment I've been seen exactly on-time, no matter what time of day the appointment is -- something sadly too rare these days. I would give Dr. Sean Gallagher 10 stars, if I could. Two weeks ago today, he performed surgery to fix a meniscus tear in my knee. Everything about this experience was smooth and "painless" -- from my first visit with Dr. Gallagher to the surgery to the follow-up. Simply flawless. When I woke up one day and couldn't walk (due to a tear in my knee meniscus) -- I was freaked out, and not sure what "getting back to normal" might entail. Dr. Gallagher explained exactly what was happening with my knee. We talked about options -- ways to reduce the inflammation, exercises, etc... to see if my knee would improve. Unfortunately, my knee issue was too severe for those remedies. What I appreciate is... Dr. Gallagher wanted to explore all the other available options before moving to a surgical solution, even though I told him in our first session "I think I'm going to need surgery". He was cautious and recommended that we explore the avenues we could, before choosing surgery. [Plus, it was just before the Xmas holidays, and I had a big trip planned that I didn't want to cancel.] I agreed to try those options, and I had some improvement which really helped me get through the holidays (yay!) -- but, my knee was still not "back to normal". So, we did the surgery, and it went incredibly well. The procedure was done at Pinnacle Surgery Center, a new facility in Austin. Wonderful place! Kind and caring professionals... all the way from the receptionist to the nurses to the insurance and billing process. The surgery prep and follow-up with Dr. Gallagher's office was impeccable. He has the BEST staff! I'm on the mend... almost back to normal. That's pretty amazing, for a 58-year old gal! (I will be dancing again, soon. ;^) read more

Moved to Austin in September, 2017 with painful arthritis in my left knee. Consulted with one ortho surgeon who took x-rays and immediately recommended a total knee replacement. Wanting a second opinion I asked around and was given Dr. Gallagher's name by several referral sources. Dr. Gallagher looked at x-rays and ordered an MRI in order to be completely sure of what the total condition of my knee was. Sure enough, the MRI indicated only a partial knee replacement. I had the surgery with Dr. Gallagher on January 15, 2018. Two days later I was home and the next day I was walking mostly without assistance. Not that far mind you, but gradual gains. He also ordered in-house PT which was awesome in speeding my recovery and range of motion in the knee. Two weeks later all of the arthritic pain is gone and I'm fully mobile again. The only slight pain remaining is from the incision site, which will fully abate in several more weeks. Dr. Gallagher is thorough, concise, and fully up to date on the latest medial procedures. He has an excellent bedside manner and is fully competent with absolutely no arrogance. He makes you feel completely comfortable being in his care. I am so glad I found him. read more

Dr. Sean Gallagher treated my daughter after she fractured her shin bone from a bad ice skating fall (skate on other leg landed on her shin). The staff and Dr. Gallagher are not only friendly and professional, but very caring and they take the time to answer any and all questions you have. They even changed her cast once after her initial one (pink color!) started to get loose and they didn't even charge us for the 2nd cast they put on after (purple color this time). A+!!! read more

I had a very significant injury to my finger due to a woodworking incident. Dr. Amis has an amazing bedside manner, never rushed me, and fixed me up as quickly as could be expected. But the most amazing thing is that he isn't a doctor that thinks "surgery first" or "drugs first." He understands that sometimes the best medicine is to allow the human body to fix itself. Wish I could give 100 Stars + ! Dr Gallagher added so much to my life, I was over 615 Pounds and both knees were bone to bone /w spurs and had a surgeon refer me to Dr Gallagher and I am so glad he did. After I lost over 365 pounds Dr Gallagher replaced both knees at different dates and now I find my gate, my pace has improved greatly and now I am no longer in pain...
