I found Dr. Hyde on the list of providers that accept my insurance. While we were on the phone, a same-day appointment came available so they slid me in. Just an update, since another family member has been back to see the doc for different issues. Dr. Hyde is still an excellent, compassionate, conservative doctor. She has, unfortunately, become incredibly busy, so there are some changes. It will probably take patients a couple of weeks at least to get in to see her, and once in, you may see her about every other appointment, and her Physician's Assistant the other times. Her PA is kind and competent, as well. You may also have to wait awhile for your appointment once you're there, because sometimes she gets behind, depending on patient needs for the day. She's in surgery a couple of days a week. Dr. Hyde has also brought another doc, Dr. Thomas, into her practice, and his schedule was a little more open than hers when we called. The front office is busy and office staff can get a little flustered at times. But their hearts are in the right place. That counts for something. read more

Wow. Dr. Hyde blew me away. I am a nurse with 25 years of experience with surgeons. I saw a family friend/orthopedic surgeon for my left knee a year ago and was so unimpressed. He was old school (although about Dr. Hyde's age). He didn't even show me the films and explain them to me (old school). Dr. Hyde's assessment skills were extremely thorough. Brilliant doctor, no BS, just the facts. I went to her after having dislocated my shoulder and a visit to TX orthopedics(Dr. Scott Smith). She checked out my shoulder in detail and provided a non-surgical diagnosis which involved rehab followed by a check up few weeks later. There was no up selling of services that I did not need. I would strongly recommend going to Dr. Hyde for any orthopedic services. I first saw Dr. Hyde in about 1996 when I needed ACL reconstructive surgery after a car accident. She did a great job and my knee did very well. Fast forward to March 2012 when I fell on my right shoulder and had a full thickness tear to my rotator cuff. She repaired it and after several weeks of PT the shoulder works great! In 2013, I was having problems with my left shoulder and once again went to see Dr. Hyde. This shoulder was even worse than the right shoulder. She spent a lot of time in the surgery suite making sure everything was addressed in the shoulder. I am now 2 months post-op and the range of motion is almost completely back. She is a great surgeon that my husband is now going to have total knee replacement in the coming months. read more

She seems to have a good knowledge of what the knee joints look like and how they behave given certain circumstances (and draws it out for you - EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.). She's quick to suggest cortisone shots or plasma (which insurance doesn't cover), but when I tried to describe what the symptom(s) feel(s) like when doing XYZ, she interrupts to interject what she believes I feel. She's condescending and defensive. When I asked about the "request an appointment" button on their website (which I've submitted numerous requests with no response - I work the same schedule her office does and can't break away to make personal phone calls during the work day), she got very defensive and accusatory - "yeah, we've reported it. You should have just called - now we're past the 30 days to know if the shot worked or not. I can listen to you bitching about it, or we can move on." Ummm, why don't you take it off your website? I'm here trying to tell you the shot did not work! I've been trying to schedule an appointment for months to tell you the shot did not work! How about actively listening to your patients and what their concern(s) is/are before lecturing? read more

I concur with all that has been written about Dr. Carolyn Hyde. Very attentive and thorough. She is helping me stave off the knee replacement that is inevitable. I saw someone about my knee prior to Dr Hyde. The comparison is night and day- that guy only looked at my x-ray, didn't touch my knee, and offered an extremely limited treatment plan. He was real bright and peppy when telling me that I could use a cane and that I should stop going on walks. It is good to know what a good Dr looks like! Thanks Dr Hyde! read more

Dr. Hyde did my fifth knee surgery and she is the best knee doc I've ever been to. She takes her time to explain what is going on and gives you plenty of time to ask questions to make sure you know 100 percent what is wrong/needs to be fixed, etc. She actually listens to you and doesn't make you feel like you're at a cattle call. I am 1.5 months post surgery and am doing better than any of my other surgeries. I only wish I had found her sooner so she could have fixed my other knee! read more

I would never recommend her. One of many doctors in Austin that was fat prejudice and would not help my husband get out of pain and replace his knees. Back in 2000 She refused to give him a prescription for an electric wheelchair so he could work, but gave him a script for Canadian Crutches instead. She did not have a problem shooting up his knees with cortisone though. His knees were bone on bone from working hard all his life and had gained weight because of it and chronic back pain. His pain doctor gave him a script for an electric wheelchair that he worked out of for 7 years.it took us that long to find a doctor that would agree to work on his knees. Finally we found Dr Shelby Carter who replaced his knees in 2007 and did an excellent job with no judgement whatsoever. read more

I've been a long-time patient of Dr. Hyde's - I play sports and she's the best orthopedic sports doctor I've seen. We send a lot of the girls from my team to her, as well, as she is more goaled and invested in getting someone moving again than some doctors who just expect you to "stop using that body part". She has repaired my broken/dislocated ankle, diagnosed my no-cartilage-havin' knee caps and gives me options to keep them pain free, and has more recently surgically remodeled my torn up right shoulder. She is thorough, wastes no time in getting you on to the next step, and my favorite - draws plenty of pictures to educate you as to what is happening. She stays up to date on the latest treatments and is pretty knowledgeable as to how those treatments work with your insurance. I'd recommend her any day! read more

Dr. Hyde is the most kind, considerate, caring, and thorough doctor I have ever been met. I have been going to Dr. Hyde for a few years for my knee and the way she explains everything in detail helps those of us of our who are not physicians understand. I went to two other surgeons before I found Dr. Hyde who didn't communicate very well. Took a week to just hear back if they took my insurance. (They don't) She did a good job and I'm happy with my knee surgery from her years ago and I would have considered wading through staff issues to use her again and maybe even pay out of pocket bc of the prior relationship, but after a week of calling just about every day and hearing, "I'll call you right back in 15 minutes, I got your number right here" (Didn't happen, had to call back the net day - again.) after all that I figure its a sign.... Dr. Hyde fixed the tear in my shoulder tissue. She's great!! She explained the problem with words and pictures I could understand. She sent me to a very competent physical therapist after the surgery. It is now a year and a half later and I'm still extremely pleased with the results. Dr. Carolyn Hyde is an exceptional surgeon and ortho doctor. I had knee surgery in January of 2015 to repair a torn meniscus and to fix a few other things. She is very thorough and just all around amazing. I would send anyone to her. I liked her so much I got my shoulder diagnosed :). I found out I had a torn rotator cuff. I had surgery last week. She found other issues and fixed them all during the surgery. My surgery time ended up being 5 hours because I had 5 tendon tears and a bone spur. If you want it done right, go to her for surgery. She can be late at times but I don't care.... I will wait as long as needed to see her. She is that good. read more

I first saw Dr. Hyde for fractures of both the bones in my left leg just above the ankle. These old fractures were nearly healed, but an a badly wrong angle. She carefully explained the treatment options, from simply letting it heal to surgical realignment and instrumentation. I opted for surgery and obtained the optimal outcome I sought. She also worked with me through several difficult and challenging shoulder problems. Despite serious osteonecrosis in my right shoulder, I am now pain-free with a full range of motion. Dr. Hyde was always patient and never rushed me out of her office; she took the time to be sure I understood my diagnoses and treatments. Sadly, I had to leave her care when I moved out of Austin.
