From the clinical director to the maintenance team, everyone interacted with him and made him feel cared for. When he became ill and was hospitalized, he was eventually placed on hospice care. Lohar welcomed him back under hospice, and he was able to pass peacefully in a familiar and supportive environment. The communication from the clinical director, Yolanda, was outstanding. She kept us fully informed and worked closely with us to ensure his hospice care met all of his needs. When he passed, it was clear that Yolanda and several other staff members were deeply affected. Their compassion and care made it evident how much they truly value their residents.

My mother lived at The Montera in Assisted Living from May 2024 until she was forced to leave in…read moreMay 2026. I want to acknowledge that many of the caregivers and staff were kind, compassionate, and truly cared about her. My concerns are with the administration and management and the newly hired director, Karinna. My mother has dementia, but she is high functioning. Not only was this my opinion, but numerous staff members commented on how independent she was compared to other residents. She has poor short-term memory and occasional confusion, but she was significantly more independent than every Memory Care resident and even most residents in Assisted Living. The Montera announced that care level pricing would be increasing but never informed me that my mother's care level had been changed from Level 1 to Level 2. I only discovered this after seeing a document I had to sign with an unexpected increase of approximately $600 per month. There was never a meaningful discussion with Karinna explaining why her care level had changed or what additional services she would be receiving. In reality, nothing about her care changed--only the cost--along with having to deal with this dismissive and patronizing new director. The justification given by Karinna was that staff administered her medications twice a day. However, this had been her medication schedule for the entire previous year and was already part of the care they had been providing. In an effort to reduce costs, I worked closely with her physician to consolidate her medications into one daily administration. Unfortunately, that change was not medically appropriate and did not work well for my mother. As soon as I began the process of returning her to the medication schedule that best supported her health, management showed no patience or willingness to allow time for the transition. Instead, I was told by Karinna that she would have to move to Memory Care or leave the community. Memory Care would have increased her monthly cost by another approximately $2,200. More importantly, I strongly believed--and still believe--that moving her to Memory Care would have been detrimental to her well-being. She was thriving in Assisted Living, remained socially engaged, and functioned at a much higher level than residents in Memory Care. Unfortunately, management seemed far more focused on administrative policies and money than on what was actually in my mother's best interest. Families deserve transparent communication, thoughtful collaboration, and individualized care decisions. Instead, I experienced poor communication, unexpected cost increases, and an ultimatum that left our family with no reasonable option other than to move her. If you are considering The Montera for a loved one, I encourage you to ask detailed questions about how care levels are determined, what specifically triggers changes, how those decisions are communicated, and whether those decisions truly reflect a resident's needs. The Montera I experienced in 2024 was not the same Montera my family experienced in 2026. Since the change in executive leadership (Karinna), the culture appears to have shifted away from individualized care and toward administrative policies and financial decisions. That change ultimately cost my mother her home. I would like to end on a positive note because there are truly exceptional people who work here. Jackie and Brianna at the front desk were always incredibly patient, welcoming, and kind to my mother. Melody always brought the fun, laughter, positivity, perseverance, and genuine compassion into my mom's life, and I will always be grateful for the difference she made. I also want to recognize Aileen, whose knowledge, guidance, and willingness to help us through difficult decisions meant so much to our family. These remarkable women are the reason my mother had any positive experiences and WHY they get a second star at The Montera. I sincerely hope the administration recognizes and values employees like them, because they are the heart of this community.

It's never easy or pleasant deciding to place a loved one in a facility. My 87 year old Mom had…read moreadvanced cancer which had metastasized to her brain, leaving her immobile one one side and greatly impacting her short term memory and her ability to speak with any cognizance. We tried in-home care but it was way too expensive (20K per month) and just was not viable for her. We looked all over the county for a good assisted living situation. So many of them were full, or had more or less than we needed. We finally found Harborview in my favorite neighborhood, of all places, and so I went to tour it. The person who does tours was not in, but another administrator Doris was happy to show me around. The home itself is a beautiful old Italianate mansion with gorgeous grounds and big beautiful windows. Amazing views across the harbor to Pt. Loma. They house only about 40 residents. I observed residents in the common areas, and all looked pretty content. There were two available private rooms, both clean and lovely. As I was leaving, the owner Jeff Settineri had arrived and took 30 minutes to talk to me about our situation with Mom. He was straightforward, and transparent and very empathetic and gave me all the info I needed. I discussed with my brothers and two days later we moved Mom over. She had a sunny downstairs room with a private entrance and lovely garden outside. It was a bit rough at first as we worked with the staff to get her established and comfortable, but pretty soon she was trustful of and happy to see her caregivers. Her hospice service visited several times a week. We were kept fully informed as to any changes or needs that arose. She had all her meals in her room and snacks, and plenty of walks outside in her wheelchair which she loved. There are lots of activities for the residents but she was a bit beyond being able to engage. Her caregivers were unfailingly sweet and patient and attentive to her and to us. Her meds were administered correctly, her laundry was done regularly and she was kept clean and comfortable. She was there for about six weeks, and she passed peacefully while resting one morning. Everyone was so awesome that day, knowing how hard it was for us. During that time, the staff became like family to us. We brought gifts and goodies to thank them and we still intend to visit occasionally. I can't say enough about the gracious care and respect my mom and our family got there. It is something I will be forever thankful for. Jeff, Genoveva, Doris, and all the staff, thank you. Highly recommend.

La Vida Real, In October of 2025, our mom, Alice, moved into…read moreLa Vida Real, a Senior Living complex in Rancho San Diego.  She moved there after our dad passed away in August.  After much discussion about the thought of leaving her home of over 50 years, this move was the best choice for her.  Our mom was given a very good deal on a one-bedroom apartment and quickly became accustomed to La Vida Real and very much enjoyed what they offered their tenants.  She enjoyed socializing by playing cards and other games with other seniors and made many friends, many of whom wanted to enjoy her company for dinner or lunch. Each time her 3 grown kids and other family members visited Alice, she had such a good time. Alice had health issues with her breathing and required oxygen bottles daily.  The service people at La Vida Real helped make each delivery and set-up of anything she needed for medical reasons as easy as possible.  Any time she had a maintenance issue or question, the service responded very quickly and treated Alice special. As time went on, our mom invited us to enjoy dinner or lunch with her in their dining room.  The waitstaff and food were always the best and they treated us as friends.  We found it very comforting when we noticed the servers treated our mom as if they'd known her for many years and they loved her.  As if she was their own mother. They knew our mom loved their cookies after a meal but she liked to take them back to her apartment. The server would bag up her cookie and slip in an extra one for her. In April of 2026, Alice started having severe difficulties with her breathing and her medication was adjusted.  Her 3 kids took shifts and stayed with her 24/7 and she was closely monitored by medical staff.  Unfortunately, after a valiant struggle to keep going, our beautiful mom passed away in her sleep on April 27, 2026.  She had family at her side.  We are all heartbroken. She was 88 years young. After we notified the front desk and the necessary procedures started, we began the process of ending her tenancy.  We learned there were some stipulations in her contract that called for either a 60 day or a 30 day notice to be made in the event of ending a tenancy.  This stipulation included 30-day notice to end a tenancy due to the death of the tenant. We contacted Business Director Kristin Molina and Executive Director Kim Garcia and explained our situation.  They gave us their condolences and we explained how our mom really loved their complex and how she made so many friends in only 8 months.  After a short period of time, and knowing Alice themselves, they fully understood our grief and the difficulties we would be facing as we prepared for our mom's memorial.  Being that the stipulation was in a signed contract, we prepared ourselves to be required to abide by the 30-day notice and pay another month's rent. A short while after our conversation, we were contacted by Kristin and Kim and after they repeated their condolences for our loss and told us they enjoyed having our mom as their tenant, they explained they were waiving the 30 day notice and our mom's final invoice would show as $0.  Their compassion for our loss gave us a relief we very much needed. We want people to know that the staff at La Vida Real have proved that they care about families and their loved ones and their compassion is real.  They understand our grief and they will do what they can to make the difficult and painful process a little easier. It's well organized, clean, professionally staffed, and very reasonably priced. It was easy to make the decision to move my parents in because there is only a small move-in community fee ($1k) that is sometimes waived all together. Pricing is for studios, 1 Bed or 2 Bed units. And it's extremely flexible in that you only have to give 30 days notice to vacate without any further charges. The activities are well organized- a great balance between social events, physical activities, mental challenges. Top picks include smoothie socials, bingo, chair yoga, coffee and doughnuts. My dad is stubborn and picky and he has finally settled in and enjoys being here.
